What will people die of 100 years from now?If you think that is a simple question, you have not been paying attention to the revolution that is taking place in biotechnology. With the help of new medicine, the human body will last a very long
time.Death will come mainly from accidents, murder and war.Today’s leading
killers, such as heart disease, cancer, and aging itself, will become distant memories.
In discussion of technological changes, the Internet gets most of the attention these days. But the change in medicine can be the real technological event of our times. How long can humans live?Human brains were known to decide the final
death.Cells are the basic units of all living things, and until recently, scientists were sure that the life of cells could not go much beyond 120 years because the basic materials of cells, such as those of brain cells, would not last forever. But the upper limits will be broken by new medicine.Sometime between 2050 and 2100,medicine will have advanced to the point at which every 10 years or so,people will be able to take medicine to repair their organs. The medicine, made up of the basic building materials of life, will build new brain cells, heart cells, and so on—in much the same way our bodies make new skin cells to take the place of old ones.

Scientists have found that human eyes are more likely to be damaged by UV rays(紫外线) while skiing in the snow-covered areas than sitting on the beach, according to a report by the UK newspaper The Telegraph.
The researchers at Kanazawa Medical University,Japan and American company Johnson conducted the study together. They looked at the effects of light reflection on newly fallen snow on a ski trail(a rough path) in Ishikawa District, northern Japan. They compared the results with the levels of UV rays on a sand beach in southern Japan’s Okinawa District. They found that on the beach, eyes are exposed to a daily 260 kilojoules(千焦耳) of UV a square meter compared to 658 kilojoules in snow-covered areas.
The findings are supported by the Japan Meteorological Agency.According to the agency, the reflection rate of UV light on beaches is often between 10 and 25 percent, compared to 80 percent in the new snow areas. The amount of light increased 4 percent with a 300-meter rise in height.
Most of us know that UV rays can harm the skin. That’s why we wear sunscreen on our skin before we get out in the sun.But many of us may not realize that UV rays are also harmful to the eyes.
If your eyes are exposed to large amounts of UV radiation over a short period of time, you may experience a kind of sunburn of the eyes, which is harmful.Your eyes will become red and feel a strange feeling. They may be sensitive to light.Fortunately, this is usually temporary and seldom causes permanent damage to the eyes.
Long-term exposure to UV radiation, however, can be more serious.Scientific studies and researches have shown that exposure to small amounts of UV radiation over a period of many years increases the chance of eye damage, which could lead to total blindness.

Most young architects—particularly those in big cities—can only dream about working in a building of their own.And making that dream come true often means
finding a building no one else seems to want, which is exactly what happened to David Yocum and his partner,Brian Bell.Their building is a former automobile electrical-parts firm in Atlanta. From the outside,it looks too old, even something horrible, but open the door and you are in a wide, open courtyard, lined on three sides with rusting walls.
In 2000,Yocum and Bell found this building in the city’s West End.Built in 1947,the structure had been abandoned years earlier and the roof of the main building had fallen down. But the price was right,so Yocum bought it.He spent eight months of his off-hours on demolition, pulling rubbish out through the roof, because it was too dangerous to go inside the building. The demolition was hard work, but it gave him time to think about what he wanted to do,and “to treasure what was there—the walls, the rust, the light,” Yocum said.“Every season, more paint falls off the walls and more rust develops. It’s like an art installation(装置) in there—a slow-motion show.”
Since the back building had been constructed without windows,an all-glass front was added to the building to give it a view of the courtyard, and skylights were installed in the roof. The back of the building is a working area and a living room
for Yocum and his wife.A sort of buffer(缓冲) zone between the front and the back contains a bathroom,a kitchen and a mechanical room, and the walls that separate these zones have openings that allow views through to the front of the studio and the courtyard beyond.
Yocum and Bell, who have just completed an art gallery for the city, feel that the experience from the decoration of their building, focusing on the inside rather than the outside, has influenced their work.It has also given these architects a chance to show how they can make more out of less.

A man and his girlfriend were married. It was a large celebration. All of their friends and family came to see the lovely ceremony.Everyone could tell that the love they had for each other was true.
A few months later, the wife ca me to the husband with a piece of advice,“I read
in a magazine,a while ago, about how we can strengthen our marriage,” she
offered.“Each of us will write a list of the things that we find a bit annoying with the other person. Then,we can talk about how we can fix them together and make our lives happier together.”
The husband agreed. So each of them tried to think of the things that annoyed them about the other and wrote down what they came up with. The next morning,at the breakfast table, they decided that they would go over their lists.

Sleep is something we all do.But some people need to sleep more than
others.Babies sleep most of the time.Children in school sleep about ten to twelve hours a night. Most adults sleep only seven or eight hours.36
All parts of our bodies have to rest after they work. Our arms need a rest after we lift heavy thing. When we run fast, our legs work hard. They get tired. We have to
rest them. Our brains work hard,too.37 We can sit quite still and rest our arms and legs. But our brains aren’t resting. They go right on thinking as long as we are awake.
Our brains slow down a bit when we sleep and dream.38 Instead of thinking wide-awake thoughts, our brains make up dreams. Some dreams are very pleasing. Some are not. Most of the time we forget them when we wake up.
Scientists have tried to find out what would happen if people were not allowed to sleep. They asked some people not to go to bed.The people stayed up all night and all the next day. They stayed up the next night too,and the day after. They played
games,but they made mistakes.They forgot things.39
The people grew rude and mean. They became angry with their friends. Finally they were too tired to stand up.When they sat down, they fell asleep.
Scientists have found that if people are not allowed to sleep and to dream, they act in an unusual way.40 But we do know that we need it to stay well.So tonight have a good sleep.Lie down under the covers.Shut your eyes.Let your thoughts wander.Soon y ou’ll stop thinking. You’ll be asleep.
A.Of course you will have a good sleep.
B.It was hard for their tired brains to work.
C.No one knows why sleep is so good for us.
D.Good sleep helps to improve one’s memory.

第二节书面表达(满分25分)
假如你是李华,你的邻居Jackson的孩子每天晚上都练习拉小提琴,给你造成很大的影响,给Jackson写封信,表达你的抱怨,希望能改变这种情况。
注意:词数100左右。
Dear Mr.Jackson,
You may remember that we have discussed the noise that your children make while they are practising their musical instruments. You agreed to make sure that they would stop practising in the evenings.
To my great surprise, things have not changed and the situation is continuing as before.I find it difficult to stay in the house and have to go out for the evening to be away from the terrible noise.Much as I like music,I have had enough, and to be honest,I am not prepared to put up with the situation anymore.
I think it is high time that you realized your responsibilities as a member of
the community.Unless you do something to change the situation,I will be forced to
take legal action.I have sent a copy of this letter to my lawyer.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua。
