Aleksandra Naranowicz, 27, struggled to find work after moving to England from Poland despite an impressive resume and a master’s degree.
She made ends meet with a modest £250-a-week job when she did her previous work, but her luck changed when one of her clients referred her to a London modeling agent. They told Aleksandra she had the figure and looks of a model.
She has already starred in a string of adverts and catwalk shows and is earning up to £2,000 a shoot.

Aleksandra left Poland with a Master’s degree in Pedagogy—the science and art of education and moved to Bristol. Mopp founder Pete Dowds said, “We’re delighted to have been a part of helping Ale ksandra with her career. She was a brilliant addition to Mopp’s Bristol cleaning team so we’re sorry to lose her but no doubt she’ll ‘c lean up’ in the fashion world in no time.”

22.(8分)They had a dozen children, six boys and six girls, in seventeen years. One reason Dad had so many children was that he was confident anything he and Mother teamed upon was sure to be a success.
Our house at Montclair, New Jersey, was a sort of school for scientific management and the removal of wasted motions —or “motion study,” as Dad and Mother named it.
Dad took moving pictures of us children washing dishes, so that he could determine how we could reduce our motions and thus hurry through the task. Each child who wanted extra pocket money put forward an offer saying what he would do the job for. The lowest bidder got the contract(合约).
Dad put process and work charts in the bathrooms. Every child old enough to write — and Dad expected his children to start writing at a young age — was required to sign their names on the charts in the morning after he had
brushed his teeth, taken a bath, combed his hair, and made his bed. At night, each child had to weigh himself, mark the figure on a graph, and sign the process charts again after he had done his homework, washed his hands and face, and brushed his teeth. Mother wanted to have a place on the charts for saying prayers, but Dad said as far as he was concerned prayers were voluntary.
It was strict management, all right. Yes, at home or on the job, Dad was always the efficiency expert. He buttoned his vest from the bottom up, instead of from the top down, because the bottom-to-top process took him only three seconds, while the top-to-bottom took seven. He even used two shaving brushes to make his face smooth enough, because he found that by so doing he could cut seventeen seconds off his shaving time. For a while he tried shaving with two razors, but he finally gave that up.
“I can save fort y-four seconds,” he complained, “but I wasted two minutes this morning putting this bandage on my throat.” It wasn’t the injured throat that really bothered him. It was the two minutes.

C.To look after the children better. D.To remind the children to obey the rules.
3、What did the father complain about one morning?
A.He should have given up shaving. B.His bleeding throat bothered him.
C.He couldn’t shave with two razors. D.He failed to cut short his shaving time.
4、We can we infer from the text?
A.The kids had to bid for everything they wanted.
B.The author took pride in his father’s management.
C.The couple were always troubled by their children.
D.The father’s work was to teach the children at home.

24.(8分)The British live on a small island. They are surrounded by the sea, so it is not surprising that the sea has always played an important role in their lives. After the development of large, ocean-going sailing ships in the fifteenth century, the sea became even more important to the country’s development. Ships setting sail from England determined to ext end Britain’s territories, its wealth and its knowledge of the world. Ships returned to England bringing goods, people and new ideas from foreign places. By the nineteenth century, Britain had the largest, most powerful navy in the world.
The great sailing ships were so much a part of British life that they even affected the language. Many English expressions we use today were originally nautical (航海的) terms, although most people no longer realize this. For example, people commonly describe an honest and fa ir business deal as being “above board”. This expression was originally used in sailing ship times when secretive, dishonest ship’s business would be carried out below decks (below the boards) out of public view. On the other hand, honest business was always conducted on deck (above the boards), in the open where everyone could see what was going on.
“Pipe down!”, meaning “Be quiet!”, is another common expression that has nautical origins. The ship’s boatswain (水手长) would blow a whistle, or pipe, at the end of the day to indicate (表明) to the sailors it was time to quieten down and go to sleep.
Most native English speakers have heard the expression “not enough room to swing a cat”, but few know that the “cat” does not refer to a small furry animal with four legs and a tail. The “cat” is actually a short form of “cat of nine tails” — a whip with nine, knotted (打结的) tails. A boatswain needed a lot of space in order to swing the whip properly when lashing (鞭打) a poor sailor under his control!
1、The British have been strongly influenced by the sea because ________.
A.they occupied more land around the world
B.they got more wealth from the sea
C.they live on an island surrounded by the sea
D.they had the largest navy ever
2、If someone is open and above board, it means he is ________.
A.secretive B.honest
C.cheerful D.dishonest
3、Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.Sailors need to go to sleep when they hear a whistle.
B.Sailors will be whipped if they do business below decks.
C.A poor sailor may be whipped nine times a day.
D.There is no spare room to raise cats on ships.
4、What is the main idea of the passage?
A.The business on British sailing ships.
B.The influence of British sailors’ language on English.
C.The sailing history of England.
D.The sailing story of British sailors.
25.(10分)Our solar system might be crazier than we once thought. Scientists say that deep within Uranus(天王星)and Neptune(海王星)it rains diamonds.
On Earth. diamonds form under extreme heat and pressure. The inside of Uranus and Neptune also has high temperatures and pressures. What's more, the blue planets are largely made up of icy water and gases such as methane(甲烷).
So scientists have long believed that deep inside the two planets, the heat and pressure the methane into hydrogen (氢)and carbon (碳) Then diamond rain would form, falling toward the center of the planets.
But no one could prove that this would really work-until now. In a study published recently in the journal Nature Astronomy, scientists say they were able to create this kind of "diamond rain" in a lab, reported The Guardian.
Scientists used high-powered lasers to create pairs of shockwaves through a kind of plastic. The plastic is made from hydrogen and carbon, much like methane. The shock waves created high pressure and heat, like that inside Uranus and Neptune.
"The experimental time is very short, Dominik Kraus, lead author of the study, told The Guardian. "That we saw this very clear signature of diamonds was actually very, very surprising”.
The diamonds created in the lab were tiny, only a few nanometers (纳米)wide. Scientists believe that diamonds would be much larger within Neptune and Uranus. Then they might slowly sink toward the planets center because of gravity.
1、What factor is needed to form diamonds?
A.Extreme heat and pressure B.Hydrogen and carbon
C.lcy water and gases D.High-powered lasers
2、What does the underlined word mean in the last paragraph?
A.Unsuccessful B.Small
C.Real D.Natural
3、How did scientists prove the theory of forming diamond?
A.By giving examples B.By stating argument
C.By explaining statistical data D.By doing experiments
4、What can be referred from the text?
A.There are many high-powered lasers in Neptune and Uranus
B.Deep inside Neptune and Uranus could be full of diamonds
C.The shockwaves inside Neptune and Uranus crate high pressure and heat.
D.Scientists long believe that there are diamonds inside Neptune and Uranus
