三、阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)
A
Have you ever heard the old saying “Never judge a book by its cover”? This is a good rule to follow when trying to judge the intelligence of others. Some people have minds that shine only in certain situations. A young man with an unusual gift in writing may find himself speechless before a pretty girl. When he wants to speak, he may not be able to find the right words. But don’t make the mistake of thinking him stupid. With a pen and a piece of paper, he can express himself better than anybody else.
Other people may fool you into overestimating(过高估计)their intelligence by putting up a good front. A boy who listens attentively and takes notes in class is likely to make a favorite impression on his teachers. But when it comes to exams, he may score near the bottom of the class.
It all boils down to this—you can’t judge people by appearance. The only way to determine a person’s intelligence is to get to know him. Then you can see how he reacts to different situations. The more situations you see, the better your judgment is likely to be. So take your time. Don’t judge a book by its cover.
41. What can we learn from the first paragraph?
A. A good writer may not be a good speaker.
B. A good speaker must be a good writer.
C. Only a speechless young man can be a good writer.
D. Words always fail a good writer when he wants to speak.
42. According to the second paragraph, a student who listens attentively and takes notes in
class .
A. will score worst in exams
B. may score best in exams
C. may not be an intelligent student
D. isn’t a good student
43. The underlined part in Paragraph 3 can be replaced by “”.
A. on the other hand
B. in a word
C. in other words
D. on the contrary
44. The main purpose of this passage is to tell us NOT to .
A. judge people by appearance
B. judge a book by its cover
C. overestimate a student by his teachers’ impression of him
D. judge a person’s intelligence through his reactions to different situations
B
In the past ten years, many scientists have studied the differences between men and women. And they all got the same answer: The sexes are different, because their brains are different. And this, the scientists say, makes men and women see the world in different ways.
Boys, for example, generally are better than girls at mathematical ideas. Boys also generally are better than girls at the kind of hand and eye movements necessary for ball sports. Girls, on the other hand generally start speaking earlier than boys. And they generally see better in the dark than boys and are better at learning foreign languages.
What makes men and women better at one thing or another? The answer is the brain. The brain has two sides connected by nerve (神经) tracks. The left side generally is used for mathematics, speech and writing. The right side is used for artistic creation and the expression for emotions. In men and women, different areas in each side of the brain develop differently. In boys, for exa mple, it’s the area used for mathematics. In girls, it is the area used for language skills. Another interesting difference is that the two sides of a man’s brain are connected by smaller nerves than the two sides of a woman’s brain are.
45. Which of the following is the best title of the article?
A. Research on the Brain
B. People’s Different Brains
C. Who Are Better, Boys or Girls
D. Differences between Men and Women
46. What makes men and women think differently.
A. Sex
B. The different experiences
C. The influences of society
D. The different brains
47. According to the article, girls are generally better than boys at ________ in your school.
A. mathematics
B. English
C. physics
D. chemistry
48. Which of the following is true?
A. Men are better than women in all things.
B. The area in girls used for language skills develops better.
C. The left side of brain in boys generally develops better than that in girls.
D. The left side of brain in girls generally develops better than that in boys.

Last year, I took a sightseeing trip to Washington, DC. I heard a voice say, “Can you help me?”
When I turned around, I saw an elderly blind woman with her hand extended. Immediately, I pulled out all of my change and placed it on her hand without even looking at her. But the blind woman smiled and said, “I don’t want your money. I just need help finding the post office.”
In an instant, I realized what I had done. I acted with prejudice—I judged another person simply for what I assumed she had to be. I hated what I saw in myself.
The thing I had forgotten about myself is that I am an immigrant. I left Honduras and arrived in the US at the age of 15. I started my new life with two suitcases, my brother and sister. Through the years, I have been a doorkeeper, cashier and pizza delivery driver among many other
humble (卑微的) jobs, and eventually I became a network engineer.
In my own life, I have experienced prejudice. I remember a time—at the age of 17 —when I was a busboy, I heard a father tell his little boy that if he did not do well in school, he would end up like me.
But now, living in my American middle—class lifestyle, it is too easy to forget my past, to forget who I am, where I have been, and to lose sight of where I want to be going. That blind woman on the streets cured me of my blindness. She reminded me of my belief in humility (谦虚). By the way, I helped that lady to the post office. I hope to thank her for the priceless lesson.
49. How did the writer give the blind woman money?
A. In a modest way.
B. In a polite way.
C. In an impatient way.
D. In a painful way.
50. According to the text, the writer________.
A. still lives a poor life
B. was busy with his work
C. was born in Honduras
D. was a native of Washington D.C.
51. According to the text, the author most probably agrees that one should_________.
A. be nice to the elderly and the disabled
B. try to experience different kinds of cultures
C. treat others equally with love and respect
D. think about one’s past as often as possible
52. What would be the best title of the text?
A. A priceless lesson
B. An act of prejudice
C. A sightseeing trip
D. A humble moment

It is Saturday afternoon. You and your friends are planning to go to the movies and then spend the night together. Just as you start to get ready, your dad reminds you it is your aunt’s birthday and the whole family is going out to dinner to celebrate. How can this possibly end without a huge argument?
One of the greatest sources of tension (紧张) between teenagers and their families is the struggle to balance personal desires with family expectations. As you are getting older, you are becoming more independent and more interested in being with your friends. However, at the same time, your family is trying to figure out how to deal with these changes. While you once spent most of your free time with your family, you are now often absent from home. Parents may get their feelings hurt. Or they might feel that they are losing control of their family during this period. You might feel angry that so many family demands are placed on you.
There are a few things you can try to make it a little easier to ease the tension.
﹡Make your plans in advance. Ask your parents if there is anything else planned at that time.
﹡When something with your friends interferes (干涉;冲突) with a family event, try to figure out if there is any way you can do both.
﹡Suggest something you would really like to do with your family. Sometimes parents feel better just knowing their teenager wants to spend time with them.
Some of the time you won’t be happy with the outcome. You might either have to disappoint your parents or have to miss out being with your friends. However, if you show consideration for the feelings of both your family and your friends, you can solve the problem in a tender way.
53. The purpose of the first paragraph is to_________.
A. show a disagreement of views
B. serve as a description of teenager trouble
C. serve as an introduction to the discussion
D. show the popularity of teenager problem
54. The tension between teenagers and their families is caused by the fact that _________.
A. teenagers don’t like to take family demands
B. parents want to keep their family under control
C. parents feel unhappy that their children make so many friends
D. both parents and teenagers don’t pay attention to each other’s feeling much
55. Which of the following is NOT the advice given in the passage?
A. Don’t feel angry if your parents ask you to do something.
B. Try to think of ways to balance family event with friend event.
C. Tell your parents before you decide to spend time with your friends.
D. Advise your parents to do something that you are interested in with you.
56. What’s the purpose of the passage?
A. To inform us of parent and teenager tension.
B. To tell us about a common teenager problem.
C. To persuade parents to show consideration for teenagers.
D. To advise teenagers how to deal with their tension (紧张) with their family.

书面表达范文:
Dear Mike,
Thank you very much for your concern. Recently many places in China including Hangzhou were blanketed with thick yellow haze. Everything around disappeared from our sight. Some highways were closed. Traffic jams were commonly seen in the streets. Many people, especially children and seniors, even found it difficult to breathe. As a result, local hospitals were crowded with people who had problems with their noses and lungs. Part of the cause was the dry weather, but the severely damaged environment contributed a lot to this nightmare.
To make a significant change, we really have to do more to protect our environment. To live a better life, we have to push on with the economy, but it would be meaningless if we had to achieve it at the cost of our breathing air.。
