Hi friends! Today I want to talk to you about how to keep your body healthy and strong. It's really important to take care of your body when you're a kid because it helps you grow up big and strong. Plus, if you get into good habits now, it will be much easier to stay healthy when you're older too!
The first thing to know is that you need to eat good food to fuel your body. You've probably heard adults say "You are what you eat" and it's true! If you eat a bunch of junk food like chips, candy, and soda, your body won't get the nutrients it needs to work properly. Instead, you should eat lots of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein like chicken or fish, and healthy fats like avocados or nuts.
My favorite healthy foods are apples, carrots, whole wheat bread, and grilled chicken. What are yours? I also really like smoothies with banana, strawberries, spinach and yogurt. Yum! Making healthy choices at meals and for snacks gives your body
energy and helps your muscles, bones, and brain develop properly.
Another super important thing for getting strong is exercise! You need to get your body moving every day to keep your heart, lungs, and muscles in shape. The great thing is that exercise can be really fun. Sports like soccer, basketball, and swimming are awesome ways to exercise and be part of a team. I love playing tag with my friends at recess too!
If you like exercising indoors, you can dance, do yoga, or follow along with a kid workout video. My favorite is the one with the funny animal trainers. No matter what you choose, aim for at least 60 minutes of exercise daily. That may sound like a lot, but it goes by quickly when you're being active and having fun.
Getting enough sleep is key for health too. When you sleep, your body gets a chance to rest and recharge the battery. You should drink water with every meal and snack, and carry a reusable water bottle so you can refill it and sip all day long. Milk, 100% fruit juices, and kid-friendly teas count towards your water intake too.
I have a cool water bottle with a strawberry on it that reminds me to keep sipping. How much water should you drink? Experts recommend 7 glasses a day for kids our age. Staying hydrated gives you more energy, prevents headaches, helps with digestion, and makes your skin look awesome!
The last thing I want to mention is hygiene. Keeping your body clean by bathing regularly and washing your hands is so important for health. You should wash your hands with soap and warm water before eating, after using the bathroom, after playing outside, after petting an animal, and after sneezing or coughing. This helps prevent you from getting sick or spreading germs.
Taking a shower or bath daily with soap and shampoo, brushing your teeth twice a day for two minutes, washing your face, and wearing deodorant (especially as you get older) are all part of good hygiene too. Making these things a habit means you'll always feel fresh and clean. Plus, good hygiene stops stinky body odors - and trust me, you don't want to be "that kid" with the bad smells!

The first thing to think about is eating good food. Our bodies need lots of nutrients from fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats to work properly. My mom always tells me that these foods are like fuel for my body's engine. If you put bad fuel in a car, it won't run well. Same thing with our bodies!
Some of my favorite healthy foods are apples, oranges, carrots, broccoli, whole wheat bread, chicken, fish, eggs, and peanut butter. Yum! I also really like foods that are different colors because that means they have different vitamins and minerals that are good for me. Next time you eat a meal, see how many bright colors you can get on your plate.

Think of them like putting sandy grit in your car's gas tank - not a good idea! But I know it's okay to have a little junk food as a treat sometimes as long as you eat well the rest of the time.
Another key to being healthy is staying hydrated by drinking lots of water. I always have a reusable water bottle with me that I refill throughout the day. Sugary drinks like juice and soda don't
really hydrate you well and can make you crash after the sugar rush wears off.
The next big part of being healthy is getting enough exercise and activity. Experts recommend at least 60 minutes per day of heart-pumping activity for kids our age. That could be running around at recess, playing sports, riding bikes, swimming, or just having a big dance party! Getting your heart rate up makes your heart and lungs stronger while also strengthening your muscles.
I love playing soccer and basketball because they get me moving while also being super fun with my friends. Even just going for a family walk after dinner is great exercise. On weekends, my parents take me and my sister to hiking trails to explore nature. What kinds of activities do you like to do?

Let me give you an example of what can happen when I don't get enough sleep. Last month, I stayed up too late a few nights in a row reading comic books under my covers with a flashlight. By the end of the week, I was yawning all through my classes, feeling cranky with my friends, and too tired to want to play outside at recess. I felt lousy! Nowadays I'm really trying to follow my bedtime routine every night so I wake up feeling energized for my day.
