Can’t wait to see all my friends when the term begins . We’re going on a three-day camp in the second week—yuck ! I hate camping . I believe it will be cold and it will probably rain , too .
Gotta go (informal English : I’ve got to go )—there is a great movie I want to watch on TV.

Most painters
discover a style of painting that suits them and stick to that , especially if

Some of Picasso’s
paintings are rich , soft colored and beautiful . Others are ugly and cruel and

make us say to ourselves , 〝What does he see that makes him paint like that ?〞
and we begin to observe behind the surface of the things we see .
Picasso painted
thousands of pictures in different styles . Sometimes he painted the natural
look of things . Sometimes he seemed to break them apart and throw the pieces in our faces . He showed us what the mind knows as well as what the eye sees .

One of Hollywood’s

Gale , a girl about 15 , lives on a farm in Kansas , USA, with her Aunt Em and

Dear Editor
I am writing to ask what has happened to our youth . They are not as polite , hard-working or clever as my generation . I will give you two e_amples
.
Last Friday , I got on the underground at 9:15 a. m . It was very
busy so there were no free seats . There were some teenagers sitting on the
seats nearest me . I didn’t know why they were not at school . They were talking loudly and laughing . It was difficult to read my newspaper with all
the noise . A heavily pregnant woman (孕妇) and her daughter got on at the ne_t stop , with lots of shopping
bags . I e_pected the teenagers to let them sit down .They saw the woman
but
did nothing . I had to ask them to give her a seat . They unwillingly did so
but gave me a rude look . I got off at the ne_t stop and was glad that the teenagers didn’t follow me .
Last Saturday , I had dinner with my friend’s family . I was looking forward to meeting his children , who I hadn’t seen for ten years . During dinner , we started talking about world politics . It soon became clear that
they didn’t know much . They couldn’t tell me the name of the King of Spain or
the President of Italy . All they knew about was the Internet and which singers
were the most beautiful . In my day , students knew the kings , queens and Presidents of every country in Europe .
I worry about the future of Germany . How could these young people become responsible workers and parents ? They sit around McDonald’s after school instead of going to the library like I did at their age . Maybe they have too much money . Perhaps another reader can give us an idea about what to
do with this 〝lost generation〞.

If English means
endless new words , difficult grammar and sometimes strange pronunciation , you
are wrong . Haven’t you noticed that you have become smarter since you started
to learn a language ?
According to a new
study by a British university , learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brain power . Researchers found that learning other languages
changes grey matter .This is the area of the brain which processes information
. It is similar to the way that e_ercise builds muscles .
The study also
found the effect is greater the younger people learn a second language .
A team led by Dr
Andrea Mechelli , from University College London , took a group of Britons who
only spoke English . They were compared with a group of 〝early bilinguals〞
who had learnt a second language before the age of five , as well as a number of later learners .
Scans showed that
grey matter density (密度) in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a
second language . But the longer a person waited before mastering a new language , the smaller the difference .
〝Our findings
suggest that the structure of the brain is changed by the e_perience of learning a second language ,〞 said the scientists .
It means that the
change itself increases the ability to learn .
Professor Dylan
Vaughan Jones of the University of Wales , has researched the link between bilingualism and maths skills . 〝Having two languages gives you two windows on
the world and makes the brain more fle_ible (灵活的),〞 he said . 〝You are actually going beyond language and have a
better understanding of different ideas .〞
The findings were
matched in a study of native Italian speakers who had learned English as a
second language between the ages of two and 34. Reading , writing ,and comprehension were all tested . The results showed that the younger they started to learn , the better . 〝Studying a language means that you get
an
entrance to another world ,〞 e_plained the scientists .
71.In the second
paragraph , the writer mentions 〝e_ercise〞 in order to .
A.say language learning is also a
kind of physical labor
B.prove that one needs more practice
when he (she ) is learning a language
C.show the importance of using in
language learning
D.make people believe language
learning helps grey matter work well
72.The
underlined word 〝bilingual〞 probably means .
A.a researcher on language learning B.a second language learner
C.a person who can speak two
languages D.an active language learner
73.We may know
from the scientific findings that .
A.the earlier you start to learn a
second language the higher the grey matter density is
B.there is no difference between a
later second language learner and one who doesn’t know a second language
C.the e_perience of learning a second
language has bad effect on people’s brain
D.the ability of learning a second
language is changing all the time
74.In the last
two paragraphs , the author wants to tell us that .
A.learning a second language is the
same as studying maths
B.early learning of a second language
helps you a great deal study other subjects
C.Italian is the best choice for you
as a second language
D.you’d better choose the ages
between 2 and 34 to learn a second language
75.What is the
best title for this passage ?
A.Science on Learning a Second
Language
B.Man’s Ability of Learning a Second
Language

W:I’m sorry . They are noisy . But
you know it’s difficult to keep boys quiet .
M:I couldn’t work and I couldn’t
sleep last night . I was woken by the noise they made this morning .
W:I’m terribly sorry . You know they
never listen to me . They are only afraid of their father . He’s away on business , but he’ll be back tomorrow .

M:Hi , Jane . It’s nice to see you
again . I heard that you went to the USA during your vacation .
W:Yes . I went to New York to attend
a summer course in English .
M:Wow . You were lucky . How long did
you stay there ?
W:About 50 days . I went there on
July 5th and came back on August 25th .
M:Where did you live in New York ?
W:Oh, I lived with an American family
, the Smiths . They are very kind people . Shortly after I arrived , we became
good friends . As I lived in their house , I could speak English with them every day . Besides , I didn’t need to worry about my daily meals . They took
care of that .

This afternoon
my wife and I are going into town to get some travel books so we can start
thinking about our holiday this summer . We normally agree about where to go
each year but this time we may well have few problems finding some places that
will satisfy both of us . Alice , my wife , has had a difficult year at work
and she has already said to me that she wants to free herself for a couple of
weeks in a place of interest with seashores or beaches , sunbathing and sleeping as much as possible . As for me , I’d rather do something more active
than that . I know I’ll get tired if we just sit on the beach all day getting sun burnt . Yesterday a friend of mine showed me photographs of his holiday last year and I must say it looked very interesting . He and his wife hired a
car for four weeks and went on a tour of Ireland , visiting different towns , sightseeing and sometimes walking in the countryside . The car was wide and
equipped with everything that you need for a short touring holiday , including
a shower . I’ll mention it to Alice later on ; she is likely to say no , but
it’s worth asking .
