Observation of levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium and alkaline phosphatase in neonates

【Abstract】 Objective: To study levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D and serum calcium, phosphorus, magnesium and alkaline phosphatase in neonates with different gestational ages and birth body weights. Methods: 984 hospitalized neonates were selected as the research objects. They were divided into three groups according to the gestational age: <34 weeks group, 34-37 week group, and ≥37 week group. Also, they were divided into three groups according to the birth body weight: very low birth body weight group (<1500 g, VLBW group), low birth weight group (≥1500 and <2500 g, LBW group) and normal birth body weight group (2500-3999 g, NBW group). The levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D and serum calcium, phosphorus, magnesium and alkaline phosphatase in the neonates with different gestational ages and different birth weights were compared. Results: The levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D, blood calcium and blood phosphorus in the <34 week group and 34-37 week group were significantly lower than those in the ≥37 week group, the ALP levels were significantly higher than that in the ≥37 week group, and the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05). There was no significant difference in the serum magnesium levels among the neonates of different gestational ages (P>0.05). The levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D and blood calcium in the LBW group were significantly higher than those in the NBW group, the levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D and blood calcium in the NBW group were significantly higher than those in the VLBW group, and the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05). The blood phosphorus level in the NBW group was significantly higher than those in the LBW group and the VLBW group, and the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05). There were no significant differences in the serum magnesium and alkaline phosphatase levels among the different body weight groups (P>0.05). Conclusions: The levels of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D, calcium, and phosphorus increase with the gestational age. The levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D and calcium are the highest in the neonates with low body weight, the phosphorus level is the highest in those with normal body weight, and the serum ALP level is the highest in those with full-term gestational age and normal body weight. Further, there are no correlations among serum magnesium level and gestational age as well as body weight.
