Six-month-old babies are strictly limited in what they can remember about the objects they see in the world. If you hide several objects from babies, they will only remember one of those objects. But a new study, which was published in an issue of Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science, finds that when babies “forget〞 about an object, not all is lost. Researchers used to think that babies less than two years old did not understand that an object continues to exist when it is not in the baby’s view. But in mid-1980s, new ways of doing experiments with babies found that they do, in fact, know that objects don’t disappear when they do not look at them – a concept known as object permanence. But it was still unknown what babies needed to remember about objects in order to remember their existence.
Now Melissa Kibbe, of John Hopkins University, and Alan Leslie, of Rutgers University, are working to figure out exactly what it is that babies remember about objects. For the new study, they showed
six-month-old babies two objects, a disk and a triangle. Then they hid the objects behind small screens, first one shape, then the other. Earlier research has shown that young babies can remember what was hidden most recently, but have more trouble remembering the first object that was hidden. Once the shapes were hidden, they lifted the screen in front
of the first object. Sometimes they showed babies the shape that was hidden there originally (起初), but sometimes it was the other shape, and sometimes the object had vanished completely.
Psychologists (心理学家) measure how long babies look at something to see how surprised they are. In Kibbe and Leslie’s study, babies weren’t particularly surprised to see that screen had changed, for example, from a triangle to a disk. But if the object was gone altogether, the babies looked significantly longer, indicating surprise at an unexpected outcome: “This shows that even though babies don’t remember the shape of the object, they know that it should continue to exist,〞 Kibbe says. “They remember the object without remembering the features that identify that object.〞
This helps explain how the young brain processes information about objects, Leslie say. He thinks the brain has a structure that acts like
a kind of pointer, a mental finger that points at an object.
63. Before the study, which of the following was unclear?
A. Whether babies know objects are gone.
B. What made babies remember objects’ existence.
C. Whether babies can remember what was hidden first.
D. Why babies were interested in what was hidden.
64. In the second paragraph, the under lined word “vanished〞 probably means “〞. A. disappeared B. forgotten C. discovered D. hidden
65. The study is beneficial to know .
A. how the young brain deals with information about objects
B. whether babies can remember features of hidden objects
C. whether babies were surprised when they found the objects disappeared
D. why babies less than two years did not understand a hidden object still existed
66. Which would be the best title for the passage?
A. A new concept – object permanence
B. A new study on psychology
C. What babies remember about objects
D. All remembered isn’t lost

One Tuesday ,July 5,2021, the state of Phoenix, Arizona was shaken by a big sandstorm. It was a huge dust storm that struck a little after 7:00 p.m. local time.
It is actually typical(典型) for the state of Arizona to have sandstorm particularly during the monsoon(季风) season which usually starts from mid–June until the end of September. However, the storm was the biggest so far .The cloud dust had turned day into night. Some trees
were downed and knocked out power for tens of thousands of people in the area, but luckily no deaths were reported. A number of pools were made polluted with dust. People who have lived in Phoenix for more than 40 years said that this was the first time they had experienced such a huge dust storm. It could greatly affect the people’s health particularly those who have breathing problems.
The huge dust cloud started in Tucson traveling north across the desert. The height was about 8,000 to 10,000 feet as what the National Weather Service weatherman Paul Iniquez said. Right after the cloud reached the valley it fell to 5000 feet. The giant storm reached speeds of 60 miles per hour. According to first reports, the storm was more than100 miles wide and more than a mile high. Besides Phoenix and nearby cities of Avondale, Tempe and Scottsdale, the storm also reached the Yuma area in southwestern and far western Arizona. It seriously reduced visibility (能见度) in these areas stopping all the flight at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. Phoenix–bound flights were not allowed to leave Los Angeles or Las Vegas airports until 9 p.m.
The storm only occurs in Arizona, the Sahara Desert and areas of the Middle East, because of the dry environment and large amount of sand. Because of the extreme absence of rain a wall of dust was formed. At this point in time, people should be careful of the water they’re drinking because there’s be strong possibility that the water is polluted by the storm.
67. In what season do sandstorms usually take place in Arizona?

C. In autumn and winter
D. In winter and spring

五、任务型阅读〔每题1分,共10分〕
Life as a teenager can be so hard. We are trying not to go wrong or get hurt while still trying to make sense of life. I tell you, I have
been there. But, looking back, I will tell you how to enjoy every experience in life. Let this be your little guide to enjoying life as a teenager.
You know, half the problems as a teenager arise because we hate doing things. We’d rather go and have fun than sit down and take care of our duties and responsibilities. That is exactly why you have so much drama in your life; your parents won’t let you have a night-out with friends because you didn’t clean your room or your teacher is threatening to take you to the headteacher because you haven’t finished your homework. When you go wrong, you go back to bed every night blaming yourself for the mistakes you have made. If you don’t make mistakes, you won’t learn. When you make a mistake, forgive yourself and move on. Don’t repeat them because there isn’t plenty of time to go wrong. Learn from your mistakes and others’ , and it will help you to develop your character. Don’t try so hard to be right all the time, or you will not end up being satisfied with yourself.
Most of us want to be popular in school and so, you beg your parents to get you the best clothes, which they obviously don’t. To deal with that situation, I’d say that if your parent is not willing to pay for all those expensive clothes for you, get yourself a part-time job or spend your money wisely. No matter what you do, you should take full responsibility for your own choices. And, instead of trying to be one of the crowd by having similar habits, dare to be different because not everyone does.
Most teenagers often tend to have the blues during the teenage years. If you think that ending your life would be better than dealing with all the depression, you are not alone. All we need is someone to talk to us and listen. So, find a listener. Just talking it through helps get rid of the stress of school, friends and everything else. You shouldn’t really be wasting your time when you time when you could develop your hobbies and interests!
I wish someone had given me all these tips to enjoy life as a teenager. In your teenage years, life is all about experiences and learning from them, so enjoy every bit of it to the fullest.

W: But she has her strong points, too. She’s lovely and hard-working, and people like being with her.
M: Perhaps she hasn’t realized that. You’re a smart girl. I’m sure you’ll figure out a way to solve the problem.
W: I guess I should talk with her, let her know that she’s a great girl, too.
M: I’m sure that will help. Oh, look. I’m afraid it’ll rain soon. How about going back to the teaching building now?
W: Oh, I’m going to the library this afternoon. I need to borrow some books.
M: OK. Do let me know if you need an umbrella. I’ve got one in the teaching building.
W: Thanks.

【备注】On February 5, 2021, the fifth grade students at an elementary school welcomed a new student. However, he was unlike other newcomers. He was not shy and seemed to immediately recognize all 119 kids by their names. Who can do that? Well, the new student was not a human but a robot. The -meter-tall student is part of a 14-month experiment. The experiment is to test if robots can gradually learn to naturally deal with a group of people.
Compared to other students, the robot has an unfair advantage. His daily conversation level has been limited to that of a five-year-old, but he was preprogrammed with the facial photos and voiceprints of all 119 fifth graders and teachers. He was also preprogrammed with the contents of the entire fifth grade science textbook. As a result, he impressed the class by answering every question correctly.。
