A
“We’re leaving you a great gift,”Papa once told us, “the gift of going without!”We thought this was another one of Papa’s jokes. But Papa and Mama knew the true value of that gift.We children didn’t –until much later. What great gift did our parents leave us?
They left us the oil lamp
On winter nights,I felt my way through the dark kitchen to get a drink of water for Papa.I was so afraid of the darkness that I never took the time to light the oil lamp or even to drink before I filled his glass.I always sipped from the glass on my way back to him, “Don’t drink it all before you get here Miss,”Papa would call.
They left us the milking
Today I buy milk in bottles, pure and cold. But as a girl I had to milk the cows each day. Then after the milking I had to wash the milk pails(水桶) and pans.I couldn’t use soap, because the water had to be fed to the pigs. The same was true of the dishwater.Soap in the water would have made the pigs sick. But even without soap, the dishes must shine,Mama said.So we had to make them shine!
Now we have the blessed telephone and the automobile. There’s no barn(谷仓) to clean out,no hitching(拴住)of horses. There is the warming magic of the furnace(火炉).There are the electric lights, with no oil lamp to clean. There are the vegetables that come in neat clear bags.If I want an apple pie,I don’t have to climb a tree first.
And there is always water! It comes from shiny taps.
Now I know what Papa meant when he said, “We’re leaving you a great gift. It’s a great gift—the gift of going without. It makes you rich for all the days of your life!”

“Hi Dave, how are you today?Just thought I’d let you know what I’m doing,”they would read.Or
“Sorry you’re going.I’ve had a good time and that would probably have had something to do with you,so
thanks.”
In some ways, the relaxed attitude was shocking, says Melville. But it was a sign of how student s’
understanding of their role has changed. “They have a more independent view of the university, and they
feel free to comment,”said Melville.
A committee, led by Melville, was set up earlier this year to explore the change in students’
attitudes
towards teachers.
“This is something being driven by young people,”said Melville. “They live surrounded by different
kinds of electronic resources. They use social networking tools and things like Wikipedia. The first group
of these students is now at university.”
Students don’t regard teaching staff in the same way as previous students did. “Because Web2.0,
Google,Wikipedia are all about being able to change things yourself, students expect to be able to do this as well,”said Melville.
There have been other changes in the student—teacher relationship. If students choose to study through a social networking group, they are in control. They don’t always make staff welcome, and they
are free to decide which staff members they allow in.
“Almost everybody who gets into using these kinds of technologies,it appears, becomes much shallower in their research,”said Melville.

What do you think life would be like if whenever you were asked to do something you had to answer “yes”?Would it be more exciting?Dangerous?A little crazy?
Well, that’s the premise(前提)of a new American comedy called Yes Man that stars Jim Carry.
In the film,Carry plays a divorced loser named Carl, whose idea of a good time is to sit on his
couch watching DVDs.Carl’s working life is just as boring—he’s been at the same bank for five years, and still hasn’t got the promotion he wants.
But everything changes when he bumps into an old friend on the street, who invites him to attend a seminar(研讨会)about the power of the word “yes”.At the seminar, the speaker preaches(宣扬)that if you say “yes”to every opportunity, you’ll have a much happier and more fulfilled life than if you let opportunities pass you by.
Carl takes this to heart, which sees him offering lifts to homeless people, bungee jumping, and learning to speak Korean and to play the guitar. He also meets a beautiful girl.
While the power of “yes” seems to change Carl’s life in a positive way,he soon discovers that if you don’t make your own decisions, you can end up in some very sticky situations.
Yes Man sees Carry returning to a comedic role after starring in several serious movies. It came out on December 19th in the US and ranks No.1 at the box office.
While the majority of Carry’s movies are comedies,he actually considers himself quite a serious person,he said recently on the American talk show “Larry King Live”.Carry told Larry King he first started out doing comedy because his mother suffered from depression, and he wanted to find a way to cheer her up or “fix her”.
And as for whether or not he’s a “yes man”,Carry said that he hires a whole group of “people who say no for me”so that he can “stay the nice guy everybody knows and loves”.
64.The purpose of writing the story is mainly to____________.
A.point out the positive sides of being a yes man.
B.introduce to you a newly released comedy
C.tell you it is important to learn to say no sometimes
D.teach you the skills of expressing refusal and agreement
65.The underlined word “sticky” is most probably closest to “___________”in meaning.
A.difficult
fortable
C.happy
D.adhesive(粘的)
66.According to the passage,Carl learns that__________.
A.you should always accept what life presents
B.life becomes colorful when you take it to your heart
C.you have to decide for yourself before saying yes or no
D.the wonderful power of “yes” can solve all the problems in life
67.From the last two paragraphs,we know that_________________.
A.Carry considers himself a “yes man”
B.Carry thinks it is difficult to refuse others himself
C.Carry has never taken delight in acting in comedies
D.Carry hasn’t been very successful with serious movies
D
Decision-making can be extremely difficult.Decision-making styles are significantly different in different cultures.
In any approach to a problem and in any negotiation, the Western world turns to the “I to you”approach while Japan, the “you to you”approach. The former means both sides present their arguments openly from their own point of view.Naturally, often comes a confrontation(冲突)situation, which Westerners are very skillful in dealing with. The latter is based on each side trying to understand the other person’s point of view. Thus, the direction of the meeting is a mutual(相互的)attempt to reduce confrontation and achieve harmony.
Besides,Western decision-making goes mostly from top management(管理人员)and often does not consult middle management or the worker. However,in Japan great consideration is given to the thoughts and opinions of everyone at all levels.Based on “bottom-up direction”,ideas can be created at the lowest level, travel upward through an organization and have an effect on the final decision.
Difference in decision-making also comes from different communication styles. The Japanese business person works to achieve harmony, even if the deal falls through, and will spend whatever time is necessary to determine a “you to you”approach, communicating personal views only indirectly. They put a thorough job above the Western deadline approach. So the Japanese are thorough in their meetings. Thus Americans are often annoyed by the many meetings in many Japanese businesses. But where the American is pressing for a specific decision, the Japanese is trying to think up a rather broad direction.
On the other hand, once a given agreement is made,it is the Japanese who sometimes wonder at the slow pace in which Westerners carry out the decision. The Japanese are eager to move forward and Westerners, perhaps, lag(落后)behind as they take the time for in-depth planning.
68.A Japanese business bases its decision____________.
A.on top-down direction
B.on nothing but its workers’ views
C.on bottom-up direction
D.only on its top leaders’ opinions
69.Which of the following is TRUE of the Westerners?
A.They carry out the decision once it is made.
B.There are many meetings in their businesses.
C.They work to achieve harmony in doing business.
D.They are good at handling confrontation situation.
70.The author’s attitude towards Japanese decision-making is_____________.
A.positive
B.critical
C.negative
D.casual
第二小节根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
选项中有两项为多余选项。
(共5小题,每小题2分,共10分)
As is known to all, many things can be measured in terms of data.Sometimes data can indeed tell the truth. With the help of data we can easily know the price of a can of Coke in the supermarket or the result of a football match.__71__What’s more important, data seem to be fairer than words and statements. If the data are true,we don’t have to worry about being cheated.Nowadays,as lies exist in the world, data are expected to tell the truth. Therefore, many of us would rather believe data.
On the other hand,if we judge things only by data from the so-called specific research, aren’t we a little too narrow-minded?Many people often treat the so-called specific data unwisely just to make sure that they are making the right decisions.__72__For example, how can you tell that somebody isn’t a good student just because he or she doesn’t get high marks in the final examination?
__73__For example, the degree of your feeling happy in your life, the depth of love between you and your friends, and the faith you have in your country. We can only feel them in our hearts but can never express them in data.
There is no doubt that analyzing the exact data is important to the assessment(评估)of an actual event. But data should be dealt with wisely. We often get wrong data which mislead us.__74__Remember,data have no feeling but we humans have.Data don’t mean much to people if
we don’t have the ability to analyze the data with the knowledge and confidence to judge whether they are true or false.__75__
Data are data, after all.Life is much more colorful than the pale data.So give the cold data a warm heart and we’ll find that the world is far more wonderful than the pale data can describe.
A.We should try our best to be wise thinkers.
B.Data can make our life easier and more comfortable.
C.But sometimes we may find that data aren’t everything.
D.Sometimes our hearts and mind are more sensitive than data.
E.Now and then the so-called specific data puzzle us very much.
F.The exact data should come from the assessment of an actual event.
G.There are many things in our life which can’t be measured by data.

书面表达:
High school is regarded as the best time of my life. Besides classes and homework, there’s something more that I especially treasure. In order to leave school with no regrets, I’ll make the best of my limited school time to go over the lessons I’ve learned. At the same time, I’d like to show my gratitude to all the teachers who have given me so much help in the past three years. In addition, it’s necessary for me to have a talk with whoever might have misunderstood me, for I do care about the friendship between us. For the purpose of improving myself, I’ll ask my classmates for some advice which may be of great value to me. Last but not least, doing a good deed for my class is also my plan. With these things done, I’ll have no regrets in my high school life.。
