Two months ago the British Council Scotland ran a foreign language assistant program. The money was provided by the Scottish government. The fall in the number of language assistants who speak their own native languages had been steeper in Scotland than in England, which saw a 21% fall over the same period.
British Council Scotland director, Lloyd Anderson, warned the fall in foreign
language assistant (FLA) numbers would harm language teaching. And in the longer term it would damage Scotland’s economic performance. He said that in an increasingly globalized world, Scotland needed to be outward-looking. “Speak ing foreign languages shows our willingness to connect with the wider world, but there are also huge economic benefits.” If they simply expected everyone to speak English, Scotland could lose international opportunities as a result of poor foreign language skills.
The Scottish government stated recently it wanted Scottish pupils to learn at least two languages as well as their mother tongue.
Alastair Sim, from Universities of Scotland, supported the British Council’s calling for language teaching to be improved. “Having one of more languages in addition to the mother tongue will be useful for future Scottish graduates”, he said.
“Starting new languages at a young age in school is the best way to learn. It will hopefully ensure universities continue to see a steady stream of Scots hungry to learn languages at university several years later”, he added.

A. be good for language teaching in Scotland.
B. have a negative effect on Scotland’s economy.
C. be good for the development of Scotland in the future.
D. produce many opportunities for Scotland in international trade.
51. What is the passage mainly about?
A. An introduction to foreign language teaching in Scotland.
B. The benefits of learning foreign languages in Scotland.
C. How to improve students’ foreign language skills in Scotland.
D. The fall in FLA numbers in Scotland and opinions on it.

Once there were three trees on a hill in the woods. They were discussing their hopes and dreams when the first tree said, “Someday I hope to be a treasure box.” Then the second tree said, “Someday I will be a big ship. I will take kings and queens across the waters.” Finally the third tree said, “I want to grow to be the tallest and straightest tree in the forest. People will see me on top of the hill.”
After a few years of praying (祈祷) that their dreams would come true, a group of woodsmen came upon the trees. When the first tree arrived at the carpenters ( 木匠) , he was made into a feed box for animals. The second tree was cut and made into a small fishing boat. The third tree was cut into large pieces and left alone in the dark.
Years went by, and the trees forgot about their dreams. Then one day, a couple saw the feed box. The man wished that he could have made a crib for their baby to sleep in with this feed box. The tree could know that it had held the greatest treasure of all time. Years later a group of men got in the fishing boat made from the second tree. One of them was tired and went to sleep. While they were out on the water, a great storm arose. The men woke the sleeping man, and he stood and said “peace” and the storm stopped. At this time, the tree knew that it had carried the King of Kings in its boat. Finally, someone came and got the third tree. The tree was raised in the air at the top of a hill to support the electric wire and he came to realize that he was strong enough.
