Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo has long worked to make her city less dependent on cars. She wanted to see more people using bicycles to get around. Over a number of years, the city government set limits on cars and increased the amount of. bike paths from 200 kilometers to over 1,000 kilometers.
This year, Parisians are not complaining about too much automobile traffic. Instead, they say there are too many bikes. "Now, it's really like a bike traffic jam(阻塞)," Thibault Quere, a spokesperson for France's Federation of Bicycle Users, said. "It's kind of a good difficulty to have, especially when we think about what Paris used to be."
Some famous roads , along the River Seine are completely closed to cars. Now you see people riding bikes, running and walking with their families along the river. In another part of Paris, a bike path on Sebastopol Boulevard is one of the busiest in Europe, after opening in 2019. In one week in early September, it reached a record high of 124,000 riders.
The city will host the Summer Olympics in 2024 and plans to add more bike paths by then. Paris wants to reduce its pollution by half during the games, even as visitors from around the world will be , in the city for the event. Organizers say all of the competition sites will be reachable by bike through a 60-kilometer network of bike paths.
The change it: Paris, however, has not been easy. With more people using bikes , more people are making mistakes. Some of them are new to cycling and disobey traffic rules. But the environment may be improving.
Cycling is good exercise and helps reduce pollution, which is still a problem for the large city The French government blames atmospheric/pollution for 48,000 early deaths in the country each year.
Hidalgo was re-elected in 2020 and plans to keep making what she calls a "Paris" that "breathes". Her newest five-year bike plan includes over $250 million for more bike paths and-bike parking. The new budget is an increase of over $100 million, from her first five-year plan.

If you've ever watched a dog nap, you've probably wondered if animals dream. It's a complicated question. We still don't know exactly why humans dream. Studying animal dreams is even harder; dogs can't tell us what made them whine(哀鸣)during a nap. However, a recent study suggests spiders may experience REM-like(类快速眼动)sleep and even visual dreams. It sounds unusual, but it may be true.
Rats recall maze memories
After rats run a maze(迷宫)during the day. they can rerun the same course while asleep, research has shown. When awake, a rat's hippocampus, a part of the brain responsible for making and storing memories; remembers the neuron(神经元)pattern of navigating the maze. Later when asleep, the brain reproduces the identical pattern, suggesting the rat remembers the maze.
This 2001 finding was one of the first to suggest that animals had complex dreams. Those rat brain studies show that when maze memories occur during sleep , the visual imagery that went along with them is also reactivated, meaning the sleeping rats saw what they had seen in the maze while awake. The same has been found for auditory(听,觉)and even emotional areas that reactivate when the rat reruns the maze during REM sleep.
Zebra finches remember songs
Despite being known for their lyrical songs, zebra finches aren't born singers. The birds must learn by listening, practicing, and, perhaps, by dreaming.
In 2000 researchers learned that neurons in the birds' forebrains fire with a distinct . pattern while they sing a song. While the birds sleep, their brains reproduce this same pattern, replicating the song they heard and sang that
day, suggesting the birds remember and practice songs in their sleep.
Do dreaming birds, relive their , waking experiences? Or are singing dreams more like algorithms(算法). running without. conscious . awareness? Scientists may be getting closer to finding out.
Researcher Mourrain says, "I would not be surprised if actual dreams were found in animals, and I think eventually we'll be able to show that scientifically. You did something in the daytime, and your brain will replay it, integrate it, and mix it with other experiences. We're not the only species capable of remembering and learning."
28. Why is it more difficult to study animal dreams?
A. Animals rarely dream.
B. Animals do not speak.
C. Animals seldom shooze.
D. Animals do not experience REM.
29. What can we say about hippocampus?
A. It makes and stores memories.
B. It remembers the pattern of the maze.
C. It enables rats to have complex dreams.
D. It helps sleeping rats to see the maze clearly.
30. Which of the following would Mourrain most probably agree with?
A. What we found' m animals now are not actual dreams.
B. The science today is unable to prove that animals do dream.
C. The. fact that animals dream will soonier or later be confirmed.
D. All animals in the world have the ability to remember and learn.
31. What might be the reasor that scientists conduct this kind of research?
A. They want to find out the relationship between sleep and memory.
B. They hope to prove that humans are the only species that dream.
C. They try to understand animals "dreams" and their influence on memory.
D. They attempt to improve the learning ability of these animals.

The sweet art of painting with caramelized sugar(焦糖)can be witnessed in China's Sichuan province. This ancient craft still manages to amaze tourists lucky enough to stumble upon a skilled street artist.
According to experts, this type of Chinese folk art originated from the Ming Dynasty when sugar animals and figures were created as part of ceremonies for sacrifice. During the Qing Dynasty, it gained even more popularity and the techniques were upgraded, which resulted in an increased number of patterns, most of them inspired by nature, wildlife and religion. In the beginning, people used molds(模具)to shape the caramelized sugar, but they were gradually replaced with a sinaft Bronze(青铜的)spoon that had to be used by talented artists who were experts at the art of normaf painting as well.
"Painting" artistic pieces from melted sugar is. very different from regular painting. Because the hot sugar cools down very quickly, the painter has to work swiftly, making sure he follows the correct order of strokes(一画,笔画);to get every shape just right. In order to get familiar with the process and the technique, it's recommended that artists practice normal painting first.
Masters of this centuries-old craft use brown or white sugar as the main material. A bronze spoon and a small spade as tools, and a slab(厚块)of marble as the canvas. The sugar is melted over a fiery pot and spread over the
canvas with the spoon. Once the shape is completed, the spade is used to glue a wooden stick to the art work and to separate it from the marble slab. Then you can have your very own caramelized sugar dragon or tiger and a unique souvenir.
The art is gaining support from both the general public and the government, who had it listed as a Provincial Non-Material Culture Heritage.

Li Hua 第二节(满分25分)
67.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I found the kitten sitting on the front step of our house. He was black and white and looked quite weak. Where
did he come from? I noticed he had no collar around his neck. Who would be so irresponsible?
I went inside and opened a can of fish. After I placed the can in the doorway, the kitten hungrily lapped it up and then walked right inside the house. Later, after jumping onto a bunch of pillows on the couch, he began to groom his hair.
I bet his last owners didn't love him at all! I thought. If someone can't take care of their kitten, they deserve to lose him! Our family never owned pets, but I had always wanted one. It's a good thing I found that kitten and took him in. Thank goodness he found me!
The kitten kept meowing quite a lot. And then it started trying to bite my hand. "Hey, kitten! I'm not food!" I said. But the kitten tried again to bite my finger. I knew I had to get him some proper cat food. "You stay put, kitten!" I told him. "I'm going to get you food!" Then I grabbed my keys and headed out to the pet store nearest to our house.
On my way to the store, I spotted a sign on the telephone pole:
LOST KITTEN-Black and White, very friendly. If you find him, please call us.
"If you were so worried about your kitten," I thought, "maybe you should have taken better care of him!"
When I walked into the pet store, I found that the place was packed with kids handing out flyers about the same cat to customers inside. In the back of the store, I saw a boy under 10 years old, crying in his wheel chair. "I can't believe I lost my kitten!" he said to his parents.
注意:续写词数应为150 左右。

I looked at the flyers on the wall carefully this time — it was definitely the cat I had back at home!
