Approved by the Ministry(部) of Science and Technology, the gene pool(基因库) will be created at the Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding and Research Base in Sichuan Province in southwe st China.“The gene pool is like a ‘gene bank’.It stores sperm(精子),ova(卵子),embryos(胚胎),cells, DNA, and other products,”said Zhang Zhihe, director of the base.
The “gene bank” can save the genetic material of giant pandas hundreds of years after they die. This material could possibly be used to grow new giant panda.
Scientists expect that the gene pool could begin operation in five years. Then the artificial breeding(人工培育) of giant pandas can begin.
Captive(圈养的) giant pandas do not easily mate or raise cubs(幼仔).The propagation rate(繁殖率) and mating rate(交配率) were lower than 20 percent from the 1960s to 1980s.“Less than 30 percent of giant pandas had babies and less than 30 percent of baby pandas didn’t die and could grow up,”said Zhang Hemin, a giant panda s pecialist.
Giant pandas are one of the most ancient and endangered animals in the world. At present, there are only 1000 giant pandas living in the wild and only 140 that are artificially bred worldwide. Most wild giant pandas live in the mountains around the Sichuan Basin.
The reasons that giant pandas are endangered include all the following EXCEPT__________ .
A. most baby giant pandas cannot grow up
B. the title number of this kind of animal is small
C. the propagation rate and mating rate are low
D. scientists are doing research into the artificial breeding of giant pandas

三、阅读理解
答案:D
四、写一篇辩论报告(debate report)
Sample report:
Today there was a very exciting debate at School about whether medical cloning should be allowed or not. After a lively discussion, a vote was taken and the side arguing for medical cloning won.
The arguments for medical cloning were very strongly put by the team supporting the motion. They argued that serious illnesses and people who were losing their ability to move or think could be helped by medical cloning. They explained that the procedures would be safe, quick and with no problems for the patients. They showed how many people in America supported it. Their arguments were very convincing.
The arguments put by the team opposing medical cloning were less strong. They argued in two ways. Their first reason was that the procedures were not yet secure. Their second reason was that it took many tries and many potential(潜在的) animals to be killed to produce one useable embryo(胚胎) for research. They explained that many European countries do not allow medical cloning because of this. They quoted Pope John Paul II. But their arguments were not so convincing.
At the end of the debate the audience were left with a feeling of hope. They realized that diseases that seem terrible today may be able to be cured soon. Many people were excited and happy when they left the Hall.。
