Soon computers and other machines will be able to remember you by looking at your eyes! The programme works because everyone’s eyes are different. So in the future you won’t have to remember a number when you want to use a machine or take money out of a bank. You’ll just have to look at the machine and it will be able to tell who you are.
The eye-recognition(眼睛识别) programme has already been tested in shops and banks in the USA, Britain, Spain, Italy and Turkey. Soon this technology(技术) will take the place of all other ways of finding out who people are.
However, scientists are also working on other systems. Machines will soon be able to know you from the shape of your face or hand or even your smell! We already have machines
that can tell who you are from your voice or the mark made by your finger.
Eye-recognition is better than other kinds because your eyes don’t change as you get older, and don’t get dirty like hands or fingers, and even twins have different eyes. So the eye-recognition programme can be up to 94% correct, depending on(取决于) how good the technology is. However, some other programmes may only be 51% correct at present. In Britain, it was found that 91% of people who had tried it said that they liked the idea of eye-recognition.
In the future your computer will be looking you in the eye. So smile!
( ) 49. Where has the eye-recognition programme already been tested in a few countries?
A. shops and banks
B. shops and schools
C. banks and schools
D. schools and hospitals
( ) 50. How does the eye-recognition programme work?
A. You look at the machine and type a number.
B. You need to speak and then look.
C. The machine looks at your eyes.
D. You look at the machine and speak.
( ) 51. We already have machines that can tell who you are from ______.
A. your eyes or your smell
B. your voice or the mark made by your finger
C. your face or your voice
D. your face or your hand
( )52. Which of the following doesn’t belong to the advantages of the eye-recognition programme?
A. Your eyes don’t change as you grow older.
B. Eyes don’t get dirty like hands or fingers.
C. Everyone’s eyes are different, even twins have different eyes.
D. We can’t see anything without eyes.

What do you mean?
Pete is on holiday in Thailand. He is learning about the local customs(风俗,习俗). Lily: Hi, Pete, are you enjoying your holiday in Thailand?
Pete: It’s great. It is a beautiful place and I am learning a lot about the country.
Lily: It must be hard to talk to people if you don’t speak their language.
Pete: I do my best with the few words I know but sometimes gestures(手势,姿势)and body language are more important.
Lily: What do you mean?
Pete: Well, last week I wanted to get my computer fixed. I went into a local computer shop. I explained the problem to the man who worked in the shop. He kept nodding his head and smiling. He seemed to understand everything I said. When I came back the next day to get my computer, he hadn’t done anything to it. I explained again and he nodded and smiled. I said I would come back the next day.
Lily: So what happened next?
Pete: That evening I met my friend Lin for a drink. I told her about my laptop(笔记本电脑).

they do in England. She volunteered to come with me to the shop the next day. The guy in the shop was so happy to see her. He had no idea about what I wanted! In Thailand a nod means “I respect you(尊敬)”, not “Yes, I know what you are talking about !” A smile can mean “sorry’.

四、任务型阅读(每小题1分,共10分)
If you think you are too shy and want to be a little bit braver, just try the following things:
Be open to others. Tell people you are shy. There is no need to hide it. When they get to know you are a shy kid, they will understand you better. This also helps you feel more comfortable in talks.
Try to smile more. When you smile, people think you are friendly and easy to talk with. Remember that other people have feelings too and most people will stay away from an angry-looking face.
Learn to be a good talker. If you find it hard to start a conversation, say something nice about people around you. Think about how great you feel when someone says something nice to you. Doesn’t it make you want to keep talking to that person.
Ger your attention(注意) elsewhere. Think more about ways to enjoy parties or games. Don’t waste time worrying about your look or whether(是否) people like you or not. You will become relaxed and find it’s not so hard to talk with others.
Take one small step at a time. Each time when you say “Hi” or smile at someone, say to yourself “You can make it.” Keeping trying and one day you’ll never feel shy when you
