Up to two thirds of children don't get as much sleep as they should do, and this can make them nervous and slow at school, researchers say.
So how long should young people sleep each night? The answer is between 8 and 10 hours. If you don't get enough sleep at night, you'll have less energy the next day.
But the researchers say many children have missed out on 4,500 hours of sleep by the time they are seven years old. They say that children miss sleep because they have TVs and computers in their rooms, and busy parents don't read to their younger children at night any more. The traditional “bedtime story” helps children to relax and fall asleep peacefully. Children with TVs and computers in their bedrooms were more likely to sleep badly, and to get less than eight hours' sleep. Even losing one hour's sleep a night can mean that children do less well at school.
German scientists think that your brain keeps working while you're asleep. To show that they were right, they gave two groups of people a problem to work out. One group went to sleep, and the other group stayed awake. The result? The people who slept worked out the answer more quickly, suggesting their brains had been trying to find the answer while the people were asleep. So, make sure you get enough sleep tonight, and you'll be at your best tomorrow!
(1)What happens to children at school if they don't get enough sleep?
A. They walk more slowly.
B. They can relax.
C. They watch more TV.
D. They do less well at school.
(2)The main idea of the second paragraph is .
A. how much sleep we need
B. children don't get enough sleep
C. our brains never really go to sleep
D. TVs and computers are the problem
(3)How does a bedtime story help children get a good sleep?
A. It helps children to relax and fall asleep peacefully.
B. Children lose more sleep.
C. Children have more energy.
D. Children get to sleep later.
(4)Why is it better to sleep in a room without a TV or computer?
A. You can read stories before you go to sleep.
B. You sleep better and get more sleep.
C. You have less energy.
D. Your brain works better.
(5)What did the German scientists' experiment show?
A. Sleep helps children learn to read.
B. Losing sleep means children don't learn well.
C. Your brain works while you are asleep.
D. Parents should read bedtime stories.

由此可以推断,如果房间里没有电视和电脑,孩子们会睡得更好,睡眠的时间更长。

故答案为B。

(5)推理判断。

将题干中的the German scientists' experiment定位在最后一段,根据suggesting their brains had been trying to find the answer while the people were asleep可知大脑在睡眠时运转的更好,故答案为C。

What's that in the sky? Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's Hello Kitty.
That's how Lauren Rojas, 12, from the US thought of her science project. She sent her Hello Kitty doll into the sky early this month. She wanted to find out how altitude(高度)changed air pressure(气压) and temperature, according to New York Daily News.
Rojas put the doll and a small computer into a rocket model, and then sent it up with a weather balloon(气球). The computer recorded the height, air pressure and temperature. Rojas also put in a video camera to record the trip.
"It took about two or three weeks to put it all together," said Rojas. "I think people will think it (the video) is really cool."
The balloon got to 28.5km above the Earth. At that height, the doll could see the blue curves (曲线) of our planet. The air was very thin up there, and soon the balloon broke up (爆炸). The doll fell from the sky and at last it ended up in a tree. It was 76km from the place where it had started its journey.
(1)Rojas do her science project___________.
A. early this morning
B. early this month
C. last week
D. two or three weeks ago (2)Rojas used __________ to find out how high the doll was.
A. A rocket model
B. A weather balloon
C. A small computer
D. A video camera (3)At last the balloon broke up at the height of _________.
A. 28.5km above the Earth
B. 76km above the Earth
C. a tree
D. a plane in flight (4)Rojas did the project to find out____________.
A. how a plane or a bird flies
B. how high a Hello Kitty can fly
C. how altitude changes air pressure and temperature
D. what our planet looks like from a great height
【答案】(1)B
(2)C
(3)A
(4)C
【解析】【分析】主要讲了Lauren Rojas把Hello Kitty放到天空中想发现高度是怎样影响气压和温度的。

(1)细节题。

根据She sent her Hello Kitty doll into the sky early this month.可知是月初就做实验,故选B。

(2)细节题。

根据The computer recorded the height, air pressure and temperature.可知电脑记录了高度,故选C。

(3)细节题。

根据The balloon got to 28.5km above the Earth. At that height, the doll could see the blue curves(曲线) of our planet. The air was very thin up there, and soon the balloon broke up (爆炸).可知气球在海拔28.5千米的地方爆炸,故选A。

(4)细节题。

根据She wanted to find out how altitude(高度)changed air pressure(气压) and temperature, according to New York Daily News.可知目的是发现高度是怎样影响气压和温度的。

故选C。

Miss Green is our Art teacher. We can learn some DIY skills in her class. She often teaches us how to paint, repair, and even cook. On Thursday, Miss Green gave us a special lesson—making potato printings.
What you need are potatoes, thick paint, a large knife, a small knife and some paper. First, decide what shape(形状)you would like to print(印)with your potato. Simple shapes work best and are easiest to make. Try hearts, moons, suns, and flowers to start with. Once you've had some practice, try more shapes like cars, boats, faces and numbers. And then, cut a potato in half with the large knife. Use the small knife to make an outline(轮廓)of the shape you want to make on one half of the potato. Next, cut away the unwanted potato, about a quarter of one inch deep, around the outline of the shape. And then put the potato printing into the thick paint. At last, press(按)the potato printing onto any paper to make your printings.
All of us were very happy to make our own printings. I made heart, flower and face printings and Mary made moon and sun printings.
(1)What is not needed in Miss Green's class?
A. Scissors.
B. Paint.
C. Knives.
D. Paper.
(2)How deep should the potato be cut?
A. 1/2 inch deep.
B. 1/3 inch deep.
C. 1/4 inch deep.
D. 1/5 inch deep.
(3)How many steps does the DIY have?
A. Six.
B. Five.
C. Four.
D. Three.
(4)What did Mary make?
A. Moon and sun printings.
B. Heart and flower printings.
C. Flower and face printings.
D. Sun and flower printings.
(5)What do we know about Miss Green's class?
A. Miss Green has the DIY class once a week.。
