Years ago, I lived in a building in a large city. The next building was only a few feet away from mine. There was a woman who lived there, whom I had never met,
yet I could see her seated by her window each afternoon, sewing or reading.
After several months had gone by, I began to notice that her window was dirty. Everything was unclear through the dirty window. I would say to myself, “I wonder why that woman doesn’t wash her window. It really looks terrible.”
One bright morning I decided to clean my flat, including washing the window on the te in the afternoon when I finished the cleaning, I sat down by the window with a cup of coffee for a rest. What a surprise! Across the way, the woman sitting by her window was clearly visible. Her window was clean!
Then it dawned on me. I had been criticizing her dirty window, but all the time I was watching hers through my own dirty window. That was quite an important lesson for me. How often had I looked at and criticized others through the dirty window of my heart, through my own shortcomings?
Since then, whenever I wanted to judge someone, I asked myself first, “Am I looking at him through my own dirty window?” I try to clean the window of my own world so that I may see the world about me more clearly.

On Sunday 23 April, more than 30, 000 people participated in the 2017 London Marathon, running 26.2 miles (42.2 kilometers) around the city centre.
The London Marathon has taken place every year since 1981. At the first one
just6,225 people completed the course, and since then it has grown into one of the biggest sporting events in the world. It is one of the “World Marathon Majors”, which is a competition made up of six global marathon events. The overall male and female winners receive $ 1 million in prize money between them. There are eleven people who have run every London Marathon since it began—they call themselves the “Ever Presents”.
This year, the winners of the London Marathon were surprisingly both from Kenya— Daniel Wanjiru, who finished in 2 hours and 5 minutes, and Mary Keitany, whose time was 2 hours and 17 minutes.
However, most marathon runners are not professional athletes. They are amateurs who have trained for months to raise money for charity or just as a personal challenge. For example, Tom Harrison took three days just to reach the run’s halfway point, as he is crawling the course on his hands and knees dressed as a gorilla(大猩猩), trying to raise money and attention for the charity “The Gorilla Organization”.
Matthew Rees was another runner to encourage people, as he stopped just before the finish line to help David Wyeth run the last 200m. They did not know each other before, but Matthew saw that David was exhausted and possibly close to collapsing, and wanted to help him finish.
Every year there are lots of touching stories like this from the London Marathon, and it is a huge achievement even to run the 26.2 miles!
24. What do we know about London Marathon from the text?
A. It has been held continuously for 37 years.

B. To prove some amateurs are not good runners.
C. To indicate participation matters more than success.
D. To show the sports event means charity for some people.
27. What is the best title for the text?
A. Touching Stories behind Marathon
B. Impressive Marathon Runners
C. The London Marathon

One night, Pilar was in a deep sleep when she was woken by her cat Inti. Inti was meowing wildly outside Pilar’s bedroom and throwing himself against the closed bedroom door. When Pilar opened her eyes, she saw that her bedroom was filled with smoke. As she escaped her house with Inti in her arms, she saw that a fire was burning in her kitchen. Pilar could easily have lost her life, but Inti would not let that happen. Even though Inti could have escaped the house through a cat door, he wouldn’ t leave Pilar.
As amazing as this story is, it is not as uncommon as you may think. Take the example of Charlotte Lee and her horse, Thunder. One summer night, the whole family was asleep with the windows open. It was normally very quiet where they lived. Suddenly, there was a loud noise. Charlotte woke up from her sweet dream, and the noise continued. Then she heard a horse running fast towards the house. The next thing she saw was Thunder standing outside her window, neighing(嘶叫) and shaking his head. She knew
something was wrong. Charlotte quickly got everyone out of the house before the earthquake hit. Thunder has saved her life.
There are also stories of wild animals coming to the rescue of humans. One animal known to be a friend of humans is the dolphin. Once, Todd Endris was surfing with his friends when he was attacked by a 13-foot(4-meter) shark. In the middle of the attack, a group of dolphins came to his rescue by forming a protective ring around Endris until he could get safely to shore. Without the help of the dolphins, there is little chance that Todd could have escaped.
No one is sure why animals have so often come to our rescue. However, it is clear that humans and animals enjoy a close relationship. It is important that we care for them as much as we can.
32. Why did Inti throw himself against the door? Because_____.
A. he wanted to get out of the room
B. he was trying to wake up his owner
C. he couldn’t find the way out because of smoke
D. he felt bored and was playing by himself
33. Before the earthquake hit, Charlotte_____.
A. closed the windows
B. ran to warn her neighbors
C. got her horse out of the stable
D. was sleeping deeply
34. Both Inti and Thunder_____.
A. saved their owners several times
B. used to make noise at night
C. were shy and quiet
D. were brave, smart and devoted
35. What might Todd say to those dolphins?
A. Thank you so much.
B. What are you doing here.
C. Why are you leaving.
D. Leave me alone.

Master Your Deadlines
The struggle begins in high school, sometimes earlier. Deadlines, and lots of
them, start to pile up. At college, the pressure sometimes leads to last-minute rush and unsatisfactory work. At work, failing to meet deadlines can easily get you fired.
36 Here are a few best practices.
▪Assign deadlines to what matters.
If the task isn’t of high importance, don’t set a specific deadline. In this way, you are able to keep it on your radar for a while without feeling pressured.
37 This will provide just enough pressure to ensure you get it done.
▪ 38
Set a personal deadline for yourself a day or two before the actual deadline.
39 If you’re working with a group of people, add in even more time to account for potential follow-ups and the need for approvals.
▪ Keep communicating.
40 This means letting others know when something is taking longer than expected, when a delivery didn’t come in, when a client is not providing the necessary information, etc. Although it may feel embarrassing to admit that something is not on schedule, being honest is much better for relieving your stress.
A. Plan for flexible hours.
B. Finish your project as early as possible.
C. But if an activity is urgent, set a deadline immediately.
D. In this way, you’ll never have to stay up late and feel stressed.
E. But handled properly, deadlines can actually improve productivity.
F. Whenever you feel challenged to finish work on time, communicate.
G. So if anything takes longer than expected, you can still wrap it up and submit it on time.

Dear Editor,
I am Li Hua, a high school student. I am writing to express my thanks and admiration for my teachers’ and schoolmates’ actions of goodwill, and appeal to more people to learn from them.
In January , the weather was freezing cold and a snowstorm swept our city. The thick snow and the icy ground made it hard for us to get around. To ensure our safety, some of my teachers and schoolmates offered to shovel ice, sweep snow and lay non-slip mats along the corridors. Even though they were tired out, they were happy to be able to give a hand to people around.
Their kindness has received a lot of praise and recognition. They do set a good example to us . I think we should learn from them and volunteer to do something beneficial to others.
Best wishes!
Yours ,

W: I'm calling about my gas bill for last month because there are some charges on there that I’m concerned about. (1)
M: I can review it with you. But first, what's your home address and the last name on the account?
Text 2
W: I see here that a Charlie Westfield has a few late charges. You'll have to pay them before you can sign out another book.
M: You' re probably looking at my son' s account. I’m Carl Westfield.
W: I also have a Charlene Westfield. Her account needs to be updated. (2) Text3
W: Look at the big field of cotton! And there's a farm with some beautiful houses.
M: We really get to know the country better when we travel by train.(3)
Text 4
M: I’ve never seen you shout at someone before. (4) Are you all right?
W: I'm sorry, but that woman was being so rude! It's been a long day and I'm a little stressed out from work.
Text 5
W: The 6: 00, 7: 30 and 8: 00 trains to London still have seats open. Which one would you like?
M: I'll take the 6: 00 train. How long will it take to get there?
W: Well, it'll take two and a half hours to get to London. (5)
Text 6
M: You look a little uncomfortable. What's the matter? (6)
W: Oh, I just don't eat Thai food very much. (6)(7)
M: Would you like me to order you something else, or would you rather go to that new Italian restaurant? (7)
W: No, we came here to eat, so let's eat. Maybe I'll just add some soy sauce.
M: Really, it's no problem. I don't want you to feel forced into eating something you don’t like.
W: It's fine, really. I need to try new things.
Text 7
W: Hey, Jim? Do you mind if I ask you how long your friend is going to be staying in our apartment? (8)
M: He will be here for at least another month, maybe longer. (8) It depends on whether or not he finds a job.
W: OK…well…it's just that he's already been here for two months, and he just sits around here all day and eats all our food. It is OK if it is temporary, but I didn’t know he'd be staying here this long. Maybe he should start contributing for things----like rent, or even groceries. (9)
M: I'll talk to him, but I can't make you any promises.
Text 8
W: I was thinking we could have the King family over for dinner on Friday night.
(10) They moved next to the subway station, so they're within driving distance now.
M: Yeah, good idea. We haven’t seen them in a while, and they have two kids, just like we do. (10)
W: What should we make for dinner? Maybe something casual and easy, like a barbecue?
(10)
We can eat out in the backyard and play some games together.
M: Sure. I think we have a badminton set in the garage.
W: Let’s invite the Smiths as well. They’re our neighbors, after all. Jack and Diane go to school with Sophie and Bobby. (10)(11)
M: Great. I'll grab some burgers and hot dogs tomorrow after work.
W: I guess I’d better start cleaning up around here, then. This place is a mess.
(12)
Text 9
M: Dr. Stone, how did you become an expert on smells?
W: Well, when I was in college, there was a course on senses. The other senses seem to be more general somehow, but smell is so personal. (13) I found it extremely interesting.
M: Do you have any interesting information to give us about smells?
W: Well, let's see. Did you know that it's harder to forget smells than to forget facts? There have been experiments where people could pick out a particular smell 30 days after smelling it for the first time. (14)
M: Really? So, smells can bring back more memories than, say, music? (14) W: That seems to be the case. (14)
M: That's interesting. So, what's your favorite smell?
W: Oh, I have a lot of different ones. The smell of the sea reminds me of happy family holidays, (15) and the smell of roses makes me think of my friend's house. Strangely enough, I like the smell of aircraft fuel at airports. I know I'm going to fly somewhere exciting! But it's the general smell of my garden that I really like the most. (16) That means I'm at home where I should be.
Text 10
Good day, everyone. Now that we’re all on the boat, (17) I'll give you a brief explanation of today's activities, as well as an introduction to the Great Barrier Reef itself. As we lea ve the mainland here, we're going to pass by one of the most fascinating parts of this reef. The beautiful colored plants that you see below you started forming 8000 years ago. They are home to over 2000 species of fish. Green Island is just one of the 900 islands of the Great Barrier Reef, (18) and it is the only one with a rainforest. (19) Sherri is our park guide, and she will take you through the forest and tell you all about the 120 different plant species we have. If you're interested in getting wet, I suggest you follow Damien and Marcus. They’re our diving guides, and they have the most knowledge about life on the island. (20) Anything to do with beer or boats, you can ask me. However, do not go anywhere on your own without informing us first. We wouldn't want anyone to get bitten by a shark or a poisonous
spider. Just kidding, mates!
