第三部分:阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

A
I was fifteen months old, a happy carefree kid until the day I fell. It was a bad fall. I landed on a glass rabbit, which cut my eye badly enough to blind it. Trying to save the eye, the doctors stitched(缝)the eyeball together where it was cut, leaving a big ugly scar in the middle of my eye. The attempt failed, but my mama, in all of her wisdom, found a doctor who knew that if the eye were removed entirely, my face would grow up badly twisted, so my scarred, sightless, cloudy and gray eye lived on with me. And as I grew, this sightless eye in so many ways controlled me.
I walked with my face looking at the floor so people would not see the ugly me. Sometimes people, even strangers, asked me embarrassing questions or made hurtful remarks. When the kids played games, I was always the “monster”. I grew up imagi ning that people looked at me in an unusual way, as if my appearance were my fault. I always felt like I was a freak(畸形人).
Yet Mama would say to me, at every turn, “Hold your head up high and face the world.” It became a faith that I relied on. I was told so when I was young. She would hold me in her arms and stroke my hair and say, “If you hold your head up high, it will be okay, and people will see your beautiful soul.” She continued this message whenever I wanted to hide. Those words have meant different things to me over the years. As a little child, I thought Mama meant, “Be careful or you will fall down or bump into something because you are not looking.” As an adolescent,
even though I tended to look down to hide my shame, I found that sometimes when I held my head up high and let people know me, they liked me. My mama’s words helped me begin to realize that by letting people look at my face, I let them recognize the intelligence and beauty behind both eyes even if they couldn’t see it on the surface.
In high school I was successful both academically and socially. I was even elected class president, but on the inside I still felt like a freak. All I really wanted was to look like everyone else. When things got really bad, I would cry to my mama and she would look at me with loving eyes and say, “Hold your head up high and face the world. Let them see the beauty that is inside.”
When I met the man who becam e my partner for life, we looked each other straight in the eye, and he told me I was beautiful in side and out. He meant it. My mama’s love and encouragement were the spark that gave me the confidence to overcome my own doubt. I had faced difficulty, and encountered my problems head on, and learned not only to appreciate myself but also to have deep compassion for others.
“Hold your head up high,” has been heard many times in my home. Each of my children has felt its invitation. The gift my mama gave me lives on in another generation.

An allergy(过敏) is a strong reaction to a substance. Many things can cause allergies. The most common cause is pollen (花粉), which is usually produced by trees in the spring, grasses in the summer and weeds in the fall, as part of their reproductive process.
Other causes include organisms, chemicals, plants and dead skin particles(微粒) from dogs and cats can also cause allergic reactions. So can insect stings and some food.
The most common kind of allergic reactions is itchy(痒的) , watery eyes and a blocked or watery nose. Allergies can also cause red, itchy skin. Some reactions can be life-threatening, for example, when breathing passages become blocked.
It is not always easy to avoid allergies. Drugs may offer an effective treatment. Another treatment used in some cases is called immunotherapy(免疫疗法). A patient is injected with small amounts of the allergy-causing substance. The idea is that larger and larger amounts are given over time until the patient develops resistance in his body.
In the United States, experts estimate that up to 8% of young children have food allergies. Every year these allergies cause about 30,000 cases with severe reactions that require immediate treatment. It can result in breathing trouble and in some cases death. It is said that about 100 to 200 people will die. It is said that most of the reactions are caused by peanuts and tree nuts like walnuts.
People can also be allergic to medicines. The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology says about 10% of bad reactions to commonly used medicines are allergic. A lot of us lose life’s tough battles by st arting a frontal(正面的) attack when a touch of humor might well enable us to win. Consider the case of a young friend of mine, who hit a traffic jam on his way to work shortly after receiving an ultimatum(最后通牒) about being late for the job. Although there was a good reason
for Sam’s being late—serious illness at home—he decided that this by-now-familiar excuse wouldn’t work any longer. His supervisor was probably already pacing up and down preparing a dismissal speech.
Yes, the boss was. Sam entered the office at 9:35. The place was as quiet as a locker room(更衣室); everyone was hard at work. Sam’s supervisor came up to him. Suddenly, Sam forced a grin(笑) and stretched out his hand. “How do you do?” he said. “I’m Sam Maynard. I’m applying for a job, which, I understand, became available just 35 minutes ago. Does the early bird get the worm?”
The room exploded in laughter. The supervisor clamped off a smile and walked back to his office. Sam Maynard had saved his job—with the only tool that could win, a laugh.
Humor is a most effective, yet frequently neglected(忽略), means of handling the difficult situations in our lives. It can be used for patching up differences, apologizing, saying “no”, criticizing, getting the other fellow to do what you want without his losi ng face. For some jobs, it’s the only tool that can succeed. It is a way to discuss subjects so sensitive that serious dialogue may start a quarrel. For example, many believe that comedians(喜剧演员) on television are doing more today for racial and religious tolerance(忍受力) than people in any other forum.
64. Why was Sam late for his job?
A. Because he was ill.
B. Because he got up late.
C. Because he was caught in a traffic jam.
D. Because he was busy applying for a new job.
65. The main idea of this passage is _______________.
A. Sam Maynard saved his job with humor
B. humor is important in our lives
C. early bird gets the worm
D. humor can solve racial discriminations
66. The phrase “clamped off” in Paragraph 3 means _______________.
A. tried to hold back
B. tried to set
C. charged
D. gave out
67. Which of the following statements can we infer from the passage?
A. Many lose life’s battles for they don’t want to be humorous.
B. It wasn’t the first time that Sam came late for his work.
C. Sam was supposed to come to his office at 8:30.
D. Humor is the most effective way of solving problems.
D
WASHINGTON—Two-thirds of the world’s polar bear population could be gone by 2050 if predictions of melting sea ice hold true, the US Geological Survey reported on Friday.
The fate of polar bears could be even worse than that estimate, because sea ice in the Arctic might b e disappearing faster than the available computer models
predict, the geological survey said in a report aimed at determining whether the big white bear should be listed as a threatened species.
“There is a definite link between changes in the sea ice and the welfare of polar bears,” said Steve Amstrup, who led the research team. He says Arctic sea ice is already at the lowest this year and is expected to retreat(退却) farther this month.
That means that polar bears—some 16,000 of them -- will disappear by 2050 from parts of the Arctic where sea ice is melting most rapidly, along the north coasts of Alaska and Russia, researchers said in a telephone briefing(简报).
Other polar bears could survive beyond that date but many of those could be gone by 2100, Amstrup said. By this century’s end, the only polar bears left might live in the Canadian Arctic islands and along the west coast of Greenland.
“It is likely to re sult in loss of approximately two-thirds of the world’s current polar bear population by the mid 21st century,” the report’s executive summary said.
“Because the observed trajector y(轨迹)of Arctic sea ice decline appears to be underestimated by currently available models, this assessment of future polar bear status may be conservative(保守的).”
In January, the US Fish and Wildlife Service proposed listing the polar bear as a threatened species, noting polar bears depended on sea ice as a platform to hunt seals, their main food.
Without enough sea ice, polar bears would be forced onto land, but they are poor hunters once they get out of the water and ice, the researchers said. The bears’disappearance would probably take place as young cubs(幼兽)failed to survive to adulthood and females were unable to reproduce successfully.
68. What was the US Geological Survey intended to do?
A. To determine whether the polar bear was in danger.
B. To measure how fast the sea ice melts in the Arctic.
C. To check the predictions of the computer models.
D. To find out the exact number of the polar bear.
69. What causes the polar bears to disappear by 2050?
A. The pollution of the Arctic region.
B. The temperature getting colder.
C. Fewer food sources being left.
D. The sea ice melting at high speed.
70. The key to preven ting polar bears dying out seems to _______________.
A. make sure there is enough sea ice in the Arctic
B. have large number of seal s living in the oceans
C. help young polar bears to survive the cold winter
D. provide chances for adult polar bears to reproduce

One possible version:
Dear Tom,
I’m glad to receive your letter and thank you for your concern about our students’ security.
So far many measures have been taken to ensure the students’ security in and out of our school. The security issue has been emphasized on. We have organized several school meetings to strengthen the students’awareness of safety about food, traffic and so on. By communicating with parents often and in time, our school can supervise and ensure our safety. Besides, a proper number of security guards have been employed to guard the school under a clear duty. Stricter security measures have been taken by our school, including a requirement that all visitors provide identification and register. The students have been taught the ways to protect themselves from danger. For example, once we smell something unusual, we should report it to the school guard immediately. In my view, our school has been doing pretty well and we ar e looking forward to more effective measures.
We believe a safer school will provide us students a better learning environment.
Yours,
Li Hua。
