21.(6分)It is widely acknowledged that it is by no means an easy task to bring up a child well. And our ancestors already understood it well. As an old proverb sa ys, “It takes an entire village to raise a child.” That is being quoted more and more often these days. And I’m pleased about that.
Parents need to be involved in their children’s education in many ways. Helping children with homework and studying, going on a field trip, teaching a craft or coaching a child’s sports team are all great ways to be involved with your child’s education. And don’t forget to communicate with teachers—they need and respect your input. Studies show that children learn more and schools function better when parents and schools work together.
Communities can help children create and achieve new goals. There are other ways such as helping with homework. reading to a child, coaching a children’s team, providing emotional support, helping solve problems and building self-esteem(自尊). Kids need role models and advisers can be role models by sharing their experiences and wisdom.
Businesses can also help shape our children’s future—invite a class from your local school to visit your workplace. You may be providing a glimpse that opens a new world of possibilities. Show students what goes on during a typical day. Give a mini course for students: how products are made; how machinery works. You may have a developing electrician, a teacher, a nurse, or even a newspaper reporter on your hands.

22.(8分)When we see a person in trouble, the first idea that comes to our mind is to lend a hand. But what if we see an animal in trouble, does the same rule apply?
This question was raised after a group of penguins were saved from an icy gully(峡谷)in Antarctica. It was filmed for the BBC wildlife series Dynasties. The film crew were anxious when they saw that a group of penguins had fallen into a gully and been trapped with their young. They built a slope(斜坡)so that a few of the penguins could save themselves.
The case has taken the international media by storm. Viewers watching this film let out a sigh of relief. “I’m so glad. I understand not taking action directly, but a helping hand isn’t bothering, right?” viewer Kathryn Shaw said on her Facebook.
However, others think human interference(干涉)is unnatural. “You can’t have sunshine throughout your life. To have done anything else would only make matters worse,” said the show’s creator David Attenborough, according to The Times.
In this case, however, Mike Gunton, the executive producer of the series, said that this was a one-off situation. “There were no animals going to suffer by interfering. You weren’t touching the animals and it was just felt by doing this... they had the chance not to have to keep slipping down the slope,” he told the BBC.
Such cases are familiar to Paul Nicklen, wildlife photographer for National
Geographic. He told Metro, “If it’s ever a predator(捕食者)situation, no matter how gut-wrenching, you stay out of the way. Even when you’re watching a male polar bear eat a baby bear.”
“There’s no rule book in those situations. You can only respond to the facts that are right there in front of you,” Will Lawson, the show’s director, told Daily Mail.

A.Putting one in place. B.Making one confused.
C.Putting one in danger. D.Making one heartbroken.
4、What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Reasons for the Necessity of Lending a Hand to Animals

23.(8分)Last fall, I happened to overhear a student telling the others he had decided not to sign up for an introductory philosophy course. The demands of his major, he said seriously, meant he needed to take “practical” courses, and “enlightenment” would simply have to wait. For now, employability was the most important.
The students’ conversat ion fits into a larger alarming narrative about the role of the humanities in higher education. In a time of dizzying technological achievement and of rapid scientific innovation, sceptics of the humanities may question the usefulness of studying Aristotle, the Italian Renaissance or Chinese fiction.
Actually, I regret not interrupting that student to argue for taking that introductory philosophy course. I would have started by reminding him that, for much of America’s history, college graduates were not co nsidered truly educated unless they had mastered philosophy, literature, political theory and history. The key role of higher
education was to invite students into the conversations about matters like what it means to be alive and the definition of justice. Fostering engagement with these subjects is still an essential part of the university’s function in society.
I would have also mentioned to the student that he was misinformed about the job market. It is true that many employers are looking for graduates with specialized technical skills, but they also look for other capabilities. As the world is transformed by artificial intelligence, machine learning and automation, the unique human qualities of creativity, imagination and moral reasoning will be the ultimate coin of the realm. All these skills are developed in humanities courses.
Further, I would have argued that while a degree anchored in the sciences is an important precondition for many jobs, it is not the only route. Look no further than the founders of companies such as LinkedIn, Slack and Flickr, who are among the many tech businesspersons with degrees in the humanities, and who credit that training for their success.
Contrary to the widely held belief that humanities majors have a hard time getting jobs, recent studies show that those with humanities degrees are successful in the workplace, experiencing low rates of unemployment and reporting high levels of job satisfaction. The ratio between average median(中位数) incomes for humanities degree holders and those with business, engineering, and health and medical sciences degrees has been shown to narrow over the course of a career.
The case for the humanities can also be understood in less transactional terms and more as a foundational preparation for a life well lived. A humanities education plays a vital role in encouraging citizens to lead an examined life. It fosters critical thinking, self-reflection, empathy and tolerance, the usefulness of which only becomes more apparent as one navigates life’s challenges.
By all means, students should take courses they think practical and follow their interests, but if they also make a point of studying the literature of the Renaissance, or researching into modern poetry, or even taking introductory philosophy, we will all benefit.
1、What do the students’ conversation show?
A.Students feel employment difficult.
B.Students think philosophy less important.
C.Students find scientific innovation amazing.
D.Students consider university courses unsatisfying.
2、What does the underlined part in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Highly valued. B.Equally applied.
C.Strictly assessed. D.Greatly improved.
3、The author may agree that humanities _____.
A.discover students’ artistic ability
B.prepare students for graduation
C.raise awareness of social status
D.provide great insights into life
4、Which of the following shows the development of ideas in the passage?
I: Introduction P: Point Sp: Sub-point(次要点) C: Conclusion
A.B.
C.D.
24.(8分)Even for a first-time visitor to China, it is impossible to ignore the popularity of Quick-Response (QR) codes. These square-shaped black-and-white symbols in WeChat or Alipay where QR codes are scanned to add new friends or make payments.
The QR Code system originated in Japan. The engineer Masahiro Hara felt the limitation of the one-dimension barcode in use and thus developed the QR codes which could carry data horizontally and vertically. QR codes could hold much more information than barcode due to their extra dimension. In addition, QR codes have larger data capacity, smaller print—out size and higher resistance to dirt and damage, which make them widely applied in many other applications.
Though the technology of QR codes is complicated, we can easily create our own QR codes with the help of QR code generators, many of which are available online for free. Users could enter the data they wish the QR code to display, and the generator
turns it into a symbol that can be printed or displayed in electronic form. The process of creating QR codes could be really fun when we customise the design of the codes according to our specific needs. For instance, we can adjust the color, add a logo, and create social options etc. Moreover, dynamic (动态的) QR codes are also available. They are more various than standard QR codes because they allow users to edit data entered previously whereas data in standard QR codes cannot be edited once printed. Plus, don’t limit your QR code to one mobile scanner. Anyone can scan your code with any reader. A lower barrier to entry makes success more likely for you and the user.
Meanwhile, we must also recognize the vulnerability of QR codes. Due to its easy access, criminals can steal simply by replacing the QR codes with their own, routing cash into their own bank accounts. Hence, we should all become more conscious towards virtual money transactions through QR codes and participate in additional security measures.
1、Which of the following is NOT a function of QR codes?
A.Data storage.
B.Scanning reader.
C.Social networking.
D.Mobile payment.
2、Why is barcode mentioned in paragraph 2?
A.To introduce the main topic.
B.To show the author’s attitude.
C.To highlight the features of QR codes.
D.To add some background knowledge.
3、Which of the following best explains “vulnerability” underli ned in paragraph 4? A.Threat. B.Weakness.
C.Difficulty. D.Simplicity.
4、Which is true about QR codes according to the text?
A.They were first used in China.
B.The generators charge the users a lot.
C.Data editing is possible in printed QR codes.
D.More scanning devices are available in reading QR codes.

29、Dear Sir or Madam,
I am Li Hua, a student in our school. Knowing that there will be an English exchange student coming to our school, I am writing to apply to be a host family.
My parents are caring and friendly. Our home is next to the city center, which has an easy access to shopping and transportation. In addition, we can offer one separate room for the student. What’s more, I have a good command of English, which makes it easier to communicate with foreigners in daily life. Therefore, I do believe that I will be a qualified host family. If given the chance, I will invite our guest to join in my family get-together. Besides, we can show him around the city, getting him to know more about the real life and culture in China.
I would appreciate it if you can consider my application. I am looking forward to your early reply.
Yours
Li Hua。
