T he Art of Chinese Calligraphy
Chinese calligraphy is the world’s most favorable form of art. When 1 was a preschooler, I was briefly taught by my grandfather to write Chinese calligraphy. Even though everything has gradually been only a blur (模糊) in my memory over the years, one thing I certainly have not lost is that I can still grip the ink brush correctly.
Imagine that someone obtains such a cherished occasion to sit down and spend a little unaccompanied time of quietness, allowing one's intellect to think freely and express out in a written script their deepest thoughts.
A piece of Xuan paper is first carefully placed on top of a desk pad. Then, use a paper- weight to hold down the Xuan paper, so it will be always
locked in the right spot. Next without any hesitation, reach for the best ink brush. Do remember to immerse (浸润) the brush with just enough ink so there won't be any ink dripping. Then start to write. While the mind unfolds, the brush sheer per stokes of Chinese character into the rhythmic motion of expressions,
In history, Chinese calligraphers have always written the script as a common way for message transmission during various audience engagements of contributors. It also makes for better cultural understanding of a different period of Chinese history. Chinese calligraphers have a variety of reasons to study the art form. For some people. practicing writing the regular script will keep the traditional culture alive. Others think it a perfect way to relax from all the daily happenings. There's still an uncountable new form of script style that has kept the art going in a way to promote the fine art of Chinese culture in our present day.
Nowadays, Chinese calligraphers strongly believe there's more than just written communication. Countless existing works display Chinese
literature. They understand what it meant to become an accomplished Chinese calligrapher. It takes many years of strictly copying from the master's correct written stokes, to gain the skill in the regular script until exemplary, perfect and beyond expert level. One requirement is to know the wring structures of several Chinese script styles.
The new approach to script writing is gaining ground, especially in western countries. Inspiring Chinese calligraphers who are willing to perfect the craft tend to create new ideas to re- present the visible images. The contemporary bending of color hypothesis sets a brand-new standard for Chinese calligraphers. That makes every sort of collective portrait of Chinese characters into a well- presented masterwork of applied arts.
As much exceptional quality of diverse formed of masterpiece appears overtime. It's a reminder that in all classes of society we must pass our heritage down to the next generation so our ancestors are more than merely just a portion of history. Instead, it is never to be forgot- ten as an integral part of the culture. “A soul is essential for a country and a nation, " Chinese President Xi Jinping said. “Professionals in the sectors of culture, art, philosophy and social sciences are important soul builders.”

Waste to Energy—JUST BURN IT!
WHY BURN WASTE?
Waste-to-energy plants generate (产生) enough electricity to supply 2.4 million households in the US. But, providing electricity is not the major advantage of waste-to-energy plants. In fact, it costs more to generate electricity at a waste-to-energy plant than it does at a coal, nuclear, or hydropower plant.
The major advantage of burning waste is that it considerably reduces the amount of trash going to landfills. The average American produces more than 1,600 pounds of waste a year. If all this waste were landfilled, it would take more than two cubic yards of landfill space. That’s the volume of a box three feet long, three feet wide, and six feet high. If that waste were burned, the ashes would fit into a box three feet long, three feet wide, but only nine inches high!
Some communities in the Northeast may be running out of land for new landfills. And, since most people don’t want landfills in their backyards, it has become more difficult to obtain permits to build new landfills. Taking the country as a whole, the United States has plenty of open space, of course, but it is expensive to transport garbage a long distance to put it into a landfill.
TO BURN OR NOT TO BURN?
Some people are concerned that burning garbage may harm the environment. Like coal plants, waste-to-energy plants produce air pollution when the fuel is burned to produce steam or electricity. Burning garbage releases the chemicals and substances found in the waste. Some chemicals can be a threat to people, the environment, or both, if they are not properly controlled.
Some critics of waste-to-energy plants are afraid that burning waste will hamper (妨碍,阻碍) recycling programs. If everyone sends their trash to a waste-to-energy plant, they say, there will be little motive to recycle. Several states have considered or are considering banning waste-to-energy
plants unless recycling programs are in place. Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New Y ork City have delayed new waste-to-energy plants, hoping to increase the level of recycling first.
So, what’s the real story? Can recycling and burning waste coexist? At first glance, recycling and waste-to-energy seem to be at odds (不一致), but they can actually complement (弥补) each other. That’s because it makes good sense to recycle some materials, and better sense to burn others.
Let’s look at aluminum, for example. Aluminum mineral is so expensive to mine that recycling aluminum more than pays for itself. Burning it produces no energy. So clearly, aluminum is valuable to recycle and not useful to burn.
Paper, on the other hand, can either be burned or recycled—it all depends on the price the used paper will bring.
Plastics are another matter. Because plastics are made from petroleum and natural gas, they are excellent sources of energy for waste-to-energy plants. This is especially true since plastics are not as easy to recycle as steel, aluminum, or paper. Plastics almost always have to be hand sorted and making a product from recycled plastics may cost more than making it from new materials.
To burn or not to burn is not really the question. We should use both recycling and waste-to-energy as alternatives to landfilling.
Waste to Energy—JUST BURN IT!

Two years ago, I watched the film Everest, in which adventurers get stuck on the mountain during a snowstorm. I immediately knew I had to start climbing. It’s not the reaction most people have to that film; maybe I just needed more adventure in my life. And six months later, I climbed my first mountain, Mount Whitney, in California – North America’s highest peak.
In the summer of 2017, I decided to climb the highest peak in every European country.
Growing up in Sweden, I was encouraged by my father to be outdoors all the time, but I wasn’t a serious adventurer. I wanted to see if someone ordinary like me could climb mountains.
I didn’t do any preparation for the first mountain, which was Mount Elbrus in Russia. It was exhausting, but I thought I would get fit climbing
the rest, and I did.
Climbing mountains is an experience that is hard to put into words. Y ou are in a beautiful environment and, when you reach the top, you feel incredible. But you also have to climb down, which is when most accidents happen. I don’t climb mountains that I am not ready for, but each one I climb takes me to the next step.
I wanted to end the project at home, on Sweden’s highest peak (2,097 m). It has two peaks: the north is rocky, and the south is icy. So alongside
my camera assistant, I climbed both while wearing a superhero suit. It didn’t feel as special as I’d hoped when I reached the top, but when I posted on Instagram, people started congratulating me, I felt proud.
In total, I spent about €50,000, which is double what I had planned, but I eventually climbed 61 mountains in Europe.
Y ou have to work on your weak sides while climbing. I don’t like not being in control, but you cannot control anything on a mountain. It’s made me a better person. When you’re on a mountain for hours alone with your thoughts, it’s like meditation. It makes you so much stronger, physically, and mentally.
My goal now is always to have a mountain in my calendar. One day I will climb Mount Qomolangma when I’m ready for it.

Growing up in Saudi Arabia, 44-year-old photographer Jody MacDonald has always had a strong interest in the desert. “I have always wanted to spend some time in the Sahara,” MacDonald said. “There are still so many unexplored areas in the Sahara Desert. These relatively unexplored places are so rare these days and hold the very fundamentals of exploration, which attract me. So finally I made the journey.” MacDonald started her journey in Mauritania’s capital city Nouakchott, and headed inland where she and her team jumped on the world’s longest cargo train (货运列车) for a 435-mile journey on the Mauritania Railway. “The train was dirty and uncomfortable but it was such an interesting and unique way to travel through the vast desert by train,” said MacDonald.
MacDonald and her group had to face many challenges on their journey. Except for the dirt and discomfort, the travelers also had to deal with the intense heat, violent winds and even dangerous sandstorms. “I was out taking photographs and within minutes, the wind increased to more than 100 miles an hour,” MacDonald said. “I thought my skin was going to be torn off because of the rain and blowing sand. It felt like sandpaper on my skin. I have never experienced winds that strong before. There was once a time when I wanted to give up.”
She dealt with the harsh (恶劣的) conditions by trying not to travel in the middle of the day and wore headscarves to protect herself from the sun and blowing sand. “The weather definitely dictates when and where you travel,” said MacDonald. Even with all the challenges, the photographer managed to record amazing images of the beautiful but harsh landscapes of Mauritania, and its fascinating cultures and communities.

Learning outside of a classroom may still be a new thing for many people but not for Kamer ·Meli·V eseli, who’s completing his final year of high school that way. His family moved from Kosovo to Switzerland, so he’s doing his coursework remotely and will take a big test with all of his teachers at the end of the year. It’s the ideal arrangement for Meli since it allows him to manage his own schedule and pursue other interests in his free time. That’s where Spark and online learning come in.
Meli has always been a serious gamer, but he’s not just looking to have fun. He likes examining the technology behind his favorite games and is curious to understand how developers create the graphics, textures, and special effects. He really wanted to make his own games and actually did develop a couple on Android but wasn’t satisfied with the results.
Searching for online courses that could take his game to the next level, he found Spark, and it was “one of the happiest days of my life.”
But gaming isn’t the extent of Meli’s interests. He’s also a hopeful singer who’d always lacked the confidence to sing in public. Then he took courses on Spark and discovered exercises that could help him loosen and relax his throat and release his voice “10 times better in 10 minutes.” Now he plans for Switzerland’s version of the TV show “The V oice” in 2016! With Spark courses, Meli’s also brushing up on his drawing skills, which he picked up in his childhood. He finally created a perfect portrait of his older brother.
Wherever Meli’s dreams take him, he knows he’ll be able to find relevant courses on Spark: “The variety is unlimited — so many languages, all kinds of software, even things like meditation and cultural lessons. Whatever you want to learn, you’ll find it on Spark.”

Every year more of us try and reduce our impact on the planet. A refill shop, or zero waste shop, gives you a choice to go green.
Refill shops tend to be small, independent stores that sell non-packaged goods. Most of the time they will be dry ones like rice and nuts produced directly in the local sites, which means less carbon footprint from farm to plate. They can also be many other sustainable (可持续的) products, like refill cleaning products and soaps. Shoppers only need to bring containers they already own and refill them from larger containers in the store.
Refill and zero-waste shops are usually located in communities. Buying from within walking distance, clearly, is more sustainable and kinder to the planet, and your community. If you’re walking down the street to your local refill shop, then you’re doing great but if you’re driving hours away to find your closest shop, then the transport may cancel out any benefits of what you buy. Remember, it’s the whole process not just the end product.
Perhaps the most significant aspect of shopping at local refill shops is that they encourage us to think about our consumer habits. They make us pause and think about how we can make positive changes for the environment.
If you can shop local and from independent refill shops, then you should. It doesn’t have to be all the time but minimising waste and choosing refills where you can will make a positive difference.
1. What are refill shops?
2. According to the passage, what is the most important value of refill shopping?
3. Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
Refill shops are built in communities within walking distance because driving to these shops can cost money.
4. In reality, refill shops have not won much popularity yet. What do you think might be the possible reason(s)?(In about 40 words)

How to Survive a Stampede (蜂拥)
At least 154 people were killed and more than 100 others injured in a stampede accident that occurred in Korea, during a Halloween gathering, local authorities said early Sunday morning. What should we do in case of similar crowding and trampling (踩踏) accidents? Here are a few tips to increase the chances of survival in an incident.
1
If you are in a crowd, a first and most important thing is to make yourself familiar with your surroundings and mentally notice alternate exits. No matter where you are, make sure you always know how to get out.
Keep an eye on the crowd.
Be aware of the general atmosphere of the crowd, as panic situations can often be expected. When in danger, a few seconds can make all the difference, giving you the possibility of taking advantage of your escaping route.
2
If you find yourself in the middle of a moving crowd, do not fight against the pressure, do not stand still or sit down, because you could easily get trampled. Move in the same direction of the crowd, keeping your hands up by your chest like a boxer — it gives you movement and protects your
chest.
3
If you fall, get up quickly. If you can’t keep moving by crawling in the same direction of the crowd, or if that is not possible, then cover your head with your arms and curl up. Do not lay on your stomach or back, as this dangerously exposes your lungs.
A. Look for exits.
B. Protect your head.
C. Avoid any choke points.
D. Keep pace with the crowd.

9. Directions: Read the following text and choose the most suitable heading from A-F for each paragraph. There is one extra heading which you do not need.
A. Manufacturing industry in information economy
B. News in the age of information
C. Argument about individual accounts and their
reliability
D. Be your own investigative journalist
E. Don’t believe everything you read in the newspapers.
F. Information is presented in an entertaining way.
1. ______
With the arrival of the age of “information economy”, intellectual work is becoming a more important source of wealth than manufacturing. Organizations in all walks of life are doing more to spread their information. So people of the Public Relations are hired to speak for them. A lot of our news is actually collected from press releases and reports of events intentionally staged for journalists. In the information age, journalists spend their time, not investigating, but passing on the words of a spokesperson.
2. ______
There is a joke in the novel Scoop about the newspaper’s owner, Lord Copper. The editors can never disagree with him. When he’s right about something they answer “definitely”, and when he’s wrong they say “to some extent, Lord Copper.” It seems reasonable to suppose that, in the real world, the opinions of such powerful people still influence the journalists and editors who work for them.
3. ______
In countries where the news is not officially controlled, it is likely to be provided by commercial organizations who depend on advertising. The news has to attract viewers and maintain its audience ratings. I suspect that some stories get air-time just because there happen to be exciting pictures to show. In Britain, we have the tabloid newspapers which millions of people read simply for entertainment. There is progressively less room for historical background, or statistics, which are harder to present as a sensational story.
4. ______
There is an argument that with spreading access to the internet and cheap technology for recording sound and images we will all be able to find exactly the information we want. People around the world will be able to publish their own eye-witness accounts and compete with the widely-accepted news-gatherers on equal terms. But what it will mean also is that we’ll be subjected to a still greater amount of nonsense and lies. Any web log may contain the latest information of the year, or equally, a made-up story that you will never be able to check.
5. ______
Maybe the time has come to do something about it, and I don’t just mean changing your choice of TV channel or newspaper. In a world where everyone wants you to listen to their version, you only have two choices: switch off altogether or start looking for sources you can trust. The investigative journalist of the future is everyone who wants to know the truth.

For parents, it’s really important to know that it’s very normal for their children to have a whole range of feelings about going back to school —from excitement, to anxiety and sadness, to even anger. 2 . They might have stomachaches or headaches when thinking about returning to school in September. And that’s all normal, too.
One of the best ways to ease into a new routine is to help the children focus on what they are looking forward to, 3 . It could be one friend they’re excited to see or even the idea of walking to school every day.

Getting enough sleep, exercising, and talking to reliable adults and friends are other effective ways to cope with anxiety and negative feelings.
