Three years ago, Sather Gowdy, a student at Gonzaga University, went through a break-up. Then two of his close friends passed away. So Sather was sad, avoiding going out.
Everything changed one day as Sather was returning home from class. An elderly woman, standing by her open trunk full of groceries, asked him to help her. He helped her get them inside. “Walking home, I realized my heart feeling lighter for the first time in weeks, ” Sather says. He made a decision not to close himself off, but perform kindness every day for his community.
Sather starts small. He once noticed his neighbor’s fence was damaged and wanted to fix it, but he didn’t know how. “Lack of knowledge didn’t stop me! ” he says. “I learned online, bought a hammer and some nails, and repaired it. ” As the movement has grown, so have Sather’s responsibilities. He dedicates several hours each day to finding ways to serve others —cleaning up the community or assisting elderly neighbors with yard work and other tasks.
“Serving others isn’t always fun,” Sather says. “It’s hard work to remain committed to spreading kindness through serving others.
But even on the toughest days, seeing the smiles on my neighbors’ faces makes it worthwhile. ”
“Think of something that everyone complains about and then go d o it, ” Sather recommends. An alley near his house, for example, was constantly filled with trash. Neighbors talked about how much they hated it, yet no one did anything about it. Sather spent several hours daily for two weeks cleaning it.
“When I was done, I saw increased joy and pride in our neighborhood, ” Sather says. Seven months later, the alley is still clean. Sather often sees neighbors checking on it, picking up lingering garbage or cutting back weeds. “Start small. You’ll be amazed at your impact. ” says Sather.

Who first proposed the holiday for workers It's not entirely clear, but two workers can make a solid claim to the Founder of Labor Day title.
Some records show that in 1882, Peter J. McGuire, general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and a co-founder of the American Federation of Labor, suggested setting aside a day for a "general holiday for the laboring classes". But many believe that machinist Matthew Maguire, not Peter McGuire, founded the holiday.
The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, in accordance with the plans of the
Central Labor Union. The Central Labor Union held its second Labor Day holiday just a year later, on September 5, 1883. By 1894, 23 more states had adopted the holiday, and on June 28, 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed a law making the first Monday in September of each year a national holiday.
Many Americans celebrate Labor Day with parades(游行), picnics and parties---festivities very similar to those outlined by the first proposal for a holiday, which suggested that the day should be observed with a street parade to exhibit "the strength and spirits of the trade and labor organizations" of the community, followed by a festival for the recreation and amusement of the workers and their families. This became the pattern for the celebrations of Labor Day. Speeches by important official men and women were introduced later, as more emphasis was placed upon the economic and civil significance of the holiday. Still later, by a resolution of the American Federation of Labor convention of 1909, the Sunday before Labor Day was adopted as Labor Sunday and dedicated to (致力于)the spiritual and educational aspects of the labor movement.
American labor has raised the nation's standard of living and contributed to the greatest production the world has ever known and the labor movement has brought us closer to the realization of
our traditional ideals of economic and political democracy.
28. What can we know from paragraph 2
A. People's views about the founder of Labor Day vary.
B. The author considered Matthew Maguire the founder.
C. Peter J. McGuire wanted to set a few days for a holiday.
D. Labor Day was originally set up for American machinists.
29. What does paragraph 3 mainly tell us
A. The real meaning of Labor Day.
B. The development of Labor Day.
C. The reason of setting Labor Day.
D. People's emphasis on Labor Day.
30. What does the underlined word "festivities" in paragraph 4 mean
A. Manners.
B. Approaches.
C. Rewards.
D. Celebrations.
31. What idea does the author want to convey in the last two paragraphs
A. It is known that America develops very fast.
B. The original meaning of Labor Day changes.
C. It is worthwhile to set a day for the laborer.
D. The labor movement makes the life unsteady.

Both Roberto and Keith have a 45-minute commute(通勤) time from their homes to their workplace. When Roberto drives, he has
realistic expectations of how others drive and how long the trip should take. Overall, he is able to adapt to any unexpected challenges he may face on the road. He rarely becomes angry. By contrast, Keith drives with a tendency for becoming angry easily, partly due to unrealistic expectations of other drivers, his quickness to personalize and feel threatened by the actions of others, and his inability to calm his anger.
The difference between how Roberto and Keith experience their drive to work, especially with regard to getting angry, is influenced very much by their emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence is crucial for helping individuals choose constructive over destructive anger. A key aspect of healthy anger is being able to pause and reflect on, rather than react to, our thoughts, feelings, and senses associated with getting angry.
Self-regulation(自我调节) and empathy(同理心) are two important components of emotional intelligence, which can be a buffer(缓冲) against destructive anger. Self-regulation helps us to control our moods. Empathy helps us to recognize the humanity(人性)in others and ourselves.
Studies suggest that training in emotional intelligence can powerfully impact how anger is managed. This was supported by a three-year study of 476 young adults who showed reduced
tendency of becoming angry after training. Children and adults can learn skills to boost their emotional intelligence and, by doing so, develop adaptability for dealing with various negative effects, including anger. Many workbooks offer skills in emotional intelligence to promote empathy and self-awareness regarding emotions and how they impact our beliefs and behavior. Clearly, through training, Keith would experience greater emotional flexibility that could support a more peaceful commute to work. I firmly believe that learning skills in emotional intelligence should be the focus in helping individuals more constructively manage this highly challenging and complex emotion.
32. What is the function of the first paragraph
A. To tell a true story.
B. To make a comparison.
C. To introduce the main topic.
D. To present an important finding.
33. Which of the following is the main point of healthy anger
A. Thinking over the annoying situation.
B. Taking action to deal with the awful situation.
C. Turning a blind eye to the unwelcome situation.
D. Expressing feelings about the disturbing situation.
34. What is the author’s attitude towards training in emotional intelligence
A. Tolerant.
B. Doubtful.
C. Negative.
D. Supportive.
35. What is the suitable title of the text
A. Friends Should Enjoy Peaceful Commute
B. Drivers Need to Boost Their Emotional Intelligence
C. Emotional Intelligence Is a Buffer Against Destructive Anger
D. Emotional Intelligence Has a Powerful Impact on People's Life

On the eve of the New Year, I was shopping in a local supermarket, buying supplies for the festive season. The store was full of people, who were wrapped up in the holiday spirit. After I had gathered
everything on my list, I made my way home, with a heart full of expectation for the celebrations ahead.
As I walked through a quiet park, I noticed an old man sitting alone on a bench. He looked tired and seemed to be shaking in the cold. His clothes were worn, and his eyes held a distant gaze, as if lost in thought. The sight moved me deeply, and without a second thought, I approached him.
“Excuse me, sir, what happened to you ”I said gently. He looked at me and said, “Nothing. I’m just missing those days when I had my family with me. ” Obviously, the old man lived alone. On the day when everyone was celebrating, he had to suffer loneliness. I co ntinued, “Would you like to join me in the New Year’s celebration at my home It’s getting cold out here. ” “Thank you, my dear, ” he replied, “but I have my own little place where I like to be on this special night. ”
I respected his wishes but wanted to do something to ensure he was not alone. I asked for his address, promising to check on him later. He hesitated for a moment before sharing it with me.
Back home, I busied myself in the kitchen, preparing a hearty meal that could warm the soul. As I cooked, I also picked out a small gift, a soft woolen blanket and a box of homemade cookies, hoping they would bring the old man comfort.
With the meal packed in a thermal(保暖的)container and the gift in hand, I set out for the old man’s home. His home was a small one, which was in a quiet corner of a neighborhood. I knocked on his door, and when he opened it, the surprise on his face was evident. “I hope you don’t mind, ”I said, “I’ve brought you some dinner and something to keep you warm. ”
