Passage 3
Different countries have different ideas about how to be polite. In Britain, table manners are important. But how do you show good table manners in Britain? Here is some advice:
● How to sit
You should sit up straight in your chair. When you eat, don't pick up the bowl. This is called very bad manners.
● Noises at table
It is never a good idea to make a noise at table.
● Using your fingers
Usually we don’t pick up food with your finger s when you are eating main dishes. But there are some foods such as pizza, sandwiches, chips (or fries) and fruit we can eat with fingers.
● Passing things
If someone asks you to pass something like the salt, only get it if you are the closest person to it. Never lean across someone else’s food. It’s more polite not to use it yourself first –pass it directly to the person who asked, and then use it later. It’s best to taste your food before you put salt in it.
● Your mouth
It is not polite to talk with your mouth full of food, nor to eat with your mouth open.
● How much to eat
It is polite to eat everything that you have been offered, so a clear plate is a good plate. It shows that you have enjoyed the food. It’s OK to leave a little, if you can’t fin ish everything. You could say something like “That was very nice” or “Thank you” after the dinner.

Passage 4
If the eyes are the windows of the heart, then the body is the mirror of our feelings. If we are feeling great, we may give our body signals. If we look at someone else’s body, we can often tell how they are feeling by their body signals. So reading body language signals is a great tool for daily communication.
Someone doesn’t think that learning how to read and use body language is important. In fact, 7% of the information we receive is from what people actually say and 38% of the information we receive is from the tone(语气) and the speed of their voice, while 55% of the information we receive is from their body language.
Facial expression is one of the body languages. Scientists say that humans have 80 muscles(肌肉) on their faces. These muscles can make 7000 different facial expressions. They can be divided into six kinds: happiness, sadness, anger, surprise, fear and disgust(厌恶).
For example, when people think a certain food tastes disgusting, they usually make a funny face. When people are surprised ,they often raise their eyebrows and open their eyes wide.
If people can read body language correctly, they may be better at knowing other people’s feelings. However, be careful not to stare at others for a long time because it is not polite.

Can you imagine a world without a writing system for your language? It may be hard to picture it now, but a man named Sequoyah lived in such a world. Sequoyah was a member of a native American tribe(部落), the Cherokee. Cherokee people speak their own language, but for hundreds of years they did not have a system of writing. Without a writing system, the Cherokee had no newspapers or books before 1809.
Sequoyah was probably born around the year 1770 and lived with his mother in a small village in the mountains of Tennessee. When he grew up, he became a blacksmith(铁匠). When he was doing business with those “English-speakin g people”, he noticed that they used paper with marks to record their thoughts and ideas. Sequoyah called these pieces of paper with marks “talking leaves”. He began to wonder why people who spoke Cherokee did not have a way to write down their words.
In 1809, Sequoyah decided to give the Cherokee their own “talking leaves”. At first he tried to make a different symbol for every word in the Cherokee language. But in that case, there would
be so many symbols and too hard for people to remember, so he decided to make a picture for each syllable (音节). After much hard work, Sequoyah invented 85 symbols. In order to see whether it would work, he helped his six-year-old daughter Ayoka learn each symbol and found she could learn to read and write very quickly. Sequoyah’s invention was a success!
Before long, Sequoyah’s writing system had spread far and wide. Cherokee people living in all different parts of the country learned to read and write. In 1825, Sequoyah’s system was made the official written language for Cherokee people. To this day, Cherokee speakers still use Sequoyah’s writing system. In some parts of the United States, you can see street signs and billboards written in both English and Cherokee. Sequoyah will always be remembered for his important contribution to Cherokee people.

Passage 10
Natural scenes often become the themes of poetry. Poets watch nature closely and present(呈现) its beauty in their poems. For example, poets may describe natural scenes such as a spring day
or a snowy day. Besides, poets often express their feelings about nature by creating lively images(形象) in poems.
With images, poets can describe the details(细节) of
something colorfully. Readers, on the other hand, can
connect their own experiences with the images in the
poems so that they can share the poets’ ideas. Now let’s
read the poem “Who Has Seen the Wind?”
When we read the lines “When the leaves hang
trembling” and “When the trees bow down their heads,”
they remind us of a windy day. The poet successfully
creates an image of the wind by describing details of the
scene. These help the readers think of the moment when
the wind passes by. We might even bow our own heads,
imagining that we are the trees.
In the poem “Night,” Blake describes many details
of a night scene. People know very well what they can see at night, like stars or the moon. However, Blake sees more than just the moon itself; he sees the moon as a flower, smiling at us from up in the sky. So the moon is really compared to a flower and personified(拟人化) as a smiling person.
1. Which picture best describes the underlined part in the poem “Who Has Seen the Wind”?
2. What do poets put in the images they created in their poems?
_________________________
3. Find the adjective(形容词) that best describe the night in the second poem.
