What is the
E-mail
The e-mail,
which is also called email, stands for 〝electronic mail〞. You can send messages in only a few seconds by e-mail.
On the Internet there are many powerful computers called 〝servers〞 to help people send and receive emails. The sending and receiving
servers are just like post offices. If you want to use the email service, you
have to open at least an email account(账户) called a 〝mailbo_〞, just like we set up a mailbo_ in a post office.
Some mailbo_es are provided free of charge(免费) by ISPs, which you can get when you open an Internet
account. Most widely used mailbo_es are provided free by the ISPs, and anyone
can apply(申请) for one
even if he has no ISP account.
How to apply for a
free mailbo_? First you have to connect to the Internet and go to the homepage(主页) of the ISP providing free mailbo_es. Then you’ll find an icon(符号) showing 〝apply for a
free mailbo_〞, click the
icon, an agreement about the rules for using the free mailbo_ will appear. If
you want to go on, click the icon 〝I agree〞. Then you have to fill in a form about your basic
personal data(资料,数据), and the
name and pin of the mailbo_. The pin is the key to the mailbo_. After finishing
these, you’ll get a
mailbo_ like this: your name @ mail server, for e_ample: jack@ 163. com.
The
mailbo_ is separated into two parts by a separator 〝@〞, which is
read as 〝at〞. The former part is the name of the mailbo_. The
latter (后者) is the
domain name(域名) of the mail
server. All mails to you will be received by the server and put into your mailbo_. You can read this mail on any computer in the world as long as you
have the name and pin of the mailbo_.

an email, you should first _____.

ISPs

(B)
Chinese are very
generous when it comes to educating their children. Not caring about the money,
parents often send their children to the best schools or even abroad to England, the United states or Australia . They also want their children to take
e_tra-course activities where they will learn a musical instrument or ballet of
other classes which will give them a head start in life. The Chinese believe that the more e_pensive an education is , the better it is . So the parents will spend an unreasonable amount of money on education. Even poor couples will
buy a computer for their son or daughter.
However, what most
parents fail to see is that the best early education they can give their children is usually very cheap.
Parents can see that
their children’s skills vary
, skilled in some areas while poor in others. What most parents fail to realize
though, is that today’s children
lack self-respect and self-confidence.
The problem is that
parents are only educating their children on how to take multiple-choice tests
and how to study well, but parents aren’t teaching them the most important skills they need to be confident,
happy and clever.
Parents can achieve this
by teaching practical skills like cooking, sewing and doing housework.
Teaching a child to cook
will improve many of the skills that he will need later in life. Cooking demands patience and time . It’s an
enjoyable but difficult e_periment . A good cook always tries to improve his
cooking, so he will learn to work hard and gradually to finish his job successfully. His result, a well-cooked dinner, will give him much satisfaction
and a lot of self-confidence.
Some old machines , such
as a broken radio or TV set that you give your children to play with will make
him curious and arouse his interest . He will spend hours looking at them, trying to fi_ them; your child might become an engineer when he grows up. These
activities aren’t merely
teaching a child to read a book, but rather to think, to use his mind . And
that is more important.
61. Parents in China,

Te_t10.
The first thing they do
is to put out an APB and this goes to all the police stations in the country .Ne_t we contact the hospitals . Often the person we are looking for has been
in an accident. Then we might try parents, friends or relatives they might be
with. We try to follow their movements and to find the last person they saw or
were with. Then we try the media . We put photographs in local or national papers-especially papers they might read. There are other things we can do: put
posters in places they might be , go on television. Here in America there is a
magazine in which there are photographs of missing children. This is often the
last hope. Of course, with nearly two million missing children every year, we
can’t do all these things
for everyone. We haven’t got the
time , the money or the staff.
