With the same theme, The Yellow Wallpaper expresses the ignorance of women’s distinctive feeling and emotional appealing under the loving manner of men. The authority of males makes it difficult for females to liberate from the constraints and oppression. Short as the stories are in length, they provoke the readers’further consideration.Actually, many scholars about the two masterpieces. However, most of them focus on the feminist thought. In this situation, this thesis tends to discuss the masterpieces from their common ground. The main content involves literary creation background, main content, theme, and writingtechniques, so as to give readers a comprehensive view of feminism. In this term, the readers can further understand the two short stories from the relationship between the theme and its literary expression.The thesis consists of three chapters. All chapters and their content are progressive. Chapter One gives a short introduction to the creation background and the narrative strategy of the masterpieces. The prevailing social value limits the narrative mode, but the authors ingeniously choose different narrative strategies to make the feminism prominent. 摘 要:19世纪的英国女性文学作品对女性主体意识从萌发到确立这一过程进行了脉络式的描述,从而确立了女性主义批评研究的方法,推动了女性主义运动的发展,并对世界妇女的解放起到了关键作用。

女性争取自身权益以及女性意识的逐步苏醒,已经在全世界形成一股不可阻挡的趋势。

Carley Rees Bogard assessed The Awakening as a classic Bildungstroman, novel of development. Anna Shannon Elfenbein examined that Chopin challenges American racist and sexist concept about sexuality in “The Awakening.”Radcliff Umstead explores thecomplicated aspects expressed by the nature imageries in The Awakening .Edna is a daughter of nature: her social, spiritual and physical awakening is through the help of nature. Edna Pontellier is often half-awake. She "half heard" voices of Robert "little half utterances;" she could at times only "half-comprehend" what was said; agrees with others in a “half-hea rted” way; "half-remembered" her past experiences. The beautiful Grand Isle is far away from the patriarchal Creole society. It is the paradise for women and children, which has charming views, a lot of intimate contact with the nature, and plenty of leisure time.
