第二部分阅读理解(满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
21.(6分)Professional athletes pay a high price for their pursuit of excellence and glory. Training to the limit tears muscles and wears out joints. Gymnasts often need hip replacements when barely into middle age. Few footballers make it to the end of their careers with their knees intact.
But many also run a darker risk: doping — the use of banned athletic performance-enhancing drugs by athletic competitors. The Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, in South Korea, starts this week in its shadow. Years after whistle-blowers first revealed wholesale (大规模的) doping in Russia, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) at last decided to bar it from taking part. But it has allowed many Russians to compete as individuals. And on the eve of the competition the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) said that 28 others should receive a more tolerant penalty from the IOC, further muffling the anti-doping message.
Russia’s doping is unusual only in its scale and institutional nature. No country or sport is immune. Studies, and an anonymous survey at the World Athletics Championships in 2011, suggest that a third of athletes preparing for big international competitions take banned substances. Yet just 1-2% fail a test each year. Lance Armstrong, a cyclist who won the Tour de France seven times and later admitted to doping all the while, was tested on 250 occasions. The few times he failed, he avoided punishments by claiming he had taken anti-inflammatories (消炎药) for saddle-sores (骑行引起的肌肉酸痛).
Doping is more sophisticated than when some states used steroids (类固醇) to bulk up athletes. New drugs are designed to be undetectable in a blood or urine sample. Many athletes “blood dope,” receiving transfusions or taking a drug that stimulates the production of red blood cells to improve their physical strength. Soviet athletes who
were fed steroids suffered a host of serious problems in later life. They were more likely to commit suicide, or to miscarry (流产) or have a disabled child. No one knows what risks those taking new “designer” versions are running. Blood-doping can cause heart attacks; more than a dozen cyclists’ deaths have already been linked to i t.
The agencies that set out to stop doping are hugely outclassed. As the argument over punishments on Russia illustrate, they are divided and weak. Most testing is done by national bodies, which may not try very hard to find evidence that would get their own stars banned. The World Anti-Doping Agency (W ADA), which oversees them, is packed with officials from national sports federations and the IOC.Their interests are likewise conflicted. Its budget is tiny. The system seems to be designed to look tough but punish only the occasional scapegoat (替罪羊). Honest athletes deserve better.
1、The word “muffling” (in paragraph 2) is closest in meaning to “.”A.deafening B.conveying C.spreading D.weakening
2、Why did the author cite an instance of Lance Armstrong?
A.To illustrate he is a model of Russian athlete.
B.To show cycling is very popular in France.
C.To indicate doping exists everywhere.
D.To suggest doping is an exception for American athletes.
3、Which of the following is NOT a side-effect of steroids?
A.Giving birth to an unhealthy child.
B.Suicidal tendencies.
C.Stimulates the production of red blood cells.
D.Unintentionally having a pregnancy end early.
4、What can be inferred from the passage?
A.The CAS should put more severe penalties on Russian athletes.
B.The Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang have not been successful due to doping scandals.
C.Doping is quite common among athletes in France and Russia.
D.W ADA does a good job monitoring doping in the Olympics.
22.(8分)I thought we all knew why independent school students do better than those in the state sector(公立学校). They have more money, more funding and better resources and they don’t have the more challenging students we get in the state
sector.
That was before I became a teacher-researcher in a two-year project led by my college, aiming to find the best way to support high-ability students. With funding from the London Schools Excellence Fund, we teamed up with some of the country’s top private schools, like Eton and St Paul’s, as well as a num ber of state schools, to find out how to bring the knowledge-rich learning that characterizes independent schools into the state sector.
Before the project, I hadn’t had much contact with people who had been educated there. But the first thing I found when I visited was that teachers are the same. In the independent sector, they have challenges too—just different ones.
After two years, our research project has produced a huge set of findings.
One of the most useful findings was the importance of independent learning habits outside the classroom. I realized that although I was always telling students that they needed to do four to five hours of private study a week, they didn’t have a clear idea of what this could look like beyond making notes. So I set them different activities including reading articles, doing activities and completing examination questions.
I started to put much more emphasis on activities outside the classroom, like researching topics beyond the syllabus(教学大纲) or discussing things in the news. And I praised anyone who asked questions in class, so we created a culture where students were proud to ask a question rather than seeing it as a way of flagging up the fact that they hadn’t understood something.
My research is beginning to have a real influence. My students now come to class and tell me what they want to know about. But they no longer expect me to do the research—they want to find out for themselves. At the end of the year I gave students a questionnaire on independent learning. One w rote, “Independent learning would limit the help I got from other students. It helps you to think for yourself.”
1、What did the author say about independent school students before her research? A.They were troublemakers.
B.They enjoyed excellent learning conditions.
C.They performed worse than state school students.
D.They faced the same challenges as state school students.
2、Why did the author join the project?
A.To introduce good learning methods to state schools.
B.To exchange teaching ideas with other teachers.
C.To partner with other schools in education.
D.To find enough funds for state schools.
3、What changes did the author make in her classes?
A.She focused on group learning. B.She worked out a different syllabus. C.She encouraged independent learning. D.She carried out various activities in class.
4、How is the author’s research going?
A.It has made a big difference. B.It has failed to make progress.
C.It is questioned by her students. D.It involves many more students.
23.(8分)Myles, my four-year-old son, somehow got into an adult pool while we were out swimming. We ran over and pulled him out of the water, only to see his blue face and grey, still body. He was lifeless.
One person immediately contacted the front desk while another called 911. My friend, John Newland, and I began CPR(心肺复苏). But we hadn't received any professional training. Despite our best efforts, we failed to make any important progress in bringing back my son.
Another friend of mine realized two off-duty lifeguards, Liz and Alison Manley, were nearby. The sisters, 15 and 18, recently trained by the Red Cross in CPR, ran to help. Alison took over directly above Myles and Liz near his feet. Alison started chest compressions (胸部压迫), and Liz gave instructions. They turned him on his side, and cleared the airway as he expelled(排出) water. They continued chest compressions and rescue breathing, staying calm and cooperating as a perfect team.
As the scene unfolded, so many things went through my mind. It seemed that seconds, minutes and hours passed, all at once. I saw his life flash before my eyes, the image of my beloved son wearing his favorite Lightning McQueen jammies (睡衣) and then his t-ball uniform. All at once was filled with both regret and hope." What kind of a father lets this happ en?”,“ Stay with me!”,“ Come on, Myles”,"I don' t want to live without you !” and finally "God help, somebody, do anything!" Then it happened. Myles slowly opened one of his eyes and began to cry. I picked him up and held him.
Myles was allowed to leave the hospital the next morning and, despite everything
that happened, he asked to go to Worlds of Fun. This was the best Father's Day gift I could have ever received, seeing that my wife, son and daughter reunited and were all healthy, playing together again! No days are taken for granted any longer!

A.They called 911 for help immediately.
B.They took immediate actions to save the boy.
C.They asked the pools medical team for aid.
D.They taught the author to perform CPR.

C.He was responsible for the accident.
D.He always believed his son would be fine.
4、After that accident, the author ____________.

24.(8分)In some islands north of Scotland, if head lice (头虱) left their host, he became sick and feverish. Therefore, sick people had lice put in their hair intentionally. There was a method in their madness:As soon as the lice had settled in again, the patient improved. The story explains the confusion of cause and effect. If the lice leave the sick host, it is because he has a fever and they simply get hot feet, and when the fever breaks, they return. Such false causality (假因果关系)misleads us every day.
Consider the headline: “Fact: Women Who Use Shampoo XYZ Every Day Have Stronger Hair.” It says very little -- least of all, that the shampoo makes your hair
stronger. It might simply be the other way round: women with strong hair tend to use Shampoo XYZ -- and perhaps that’s because it says “especially for thick hair” on the bottle.
Another example: Scientists found that long periods in the hospital did harm to patients. But, clearly, patients who are dismissed immediately are healthier than those who must stay on for treatment.
Recently I read that students get better grades at school if their homes contain many books. This study was surely a shot in the arm for booksellers, but it was also false causality. This simple truth is that educated parents tend to value their children's education more than uneducated ones do, and they often have more books at home. In short, a dust-covered copy War and Peace alone isn't going to influence anyone's grades; what counts is parents' education levels, as well as their genes.
There was also the supposed relationship between the birth rate and the numbers of stork (鹳)pairs in Germany. Both were in decline, and if you plot (描绘)them on a graph (曲线图),the two lines of development from 1965 to 1987 appeared almost the same. Does this mean the storks actually bring babies? Obviously not. This was a purely accidental connection.
In conclusion: Connection is not causality. Take a closer look at linked events: Sometimes what is presented as the cause turns out to be the effect, or just the other way round, and sometimes there is no link at all -- just like with storks and babies.
1、According to the first paragraph, people in some islands north of Scotland _________. A.found a way to get rid of head lice
B.used an effective method to keep flt
C.made head lice a part of their life
D.died due to infections with head lice
2、Which is an example of false causality?
A.Women with strong hair tend to use a certain shampoo.
B.The birth rate and the stork population are connected.
C.Longer periods in the hospital benefit patients.
D.Lice can make a person sick and feverish.
3、The underlined phrase “ a shot in the arm” in Paragraph 4 means _______.
A.pain B.defeat
C.guidance D.encouragement
4、According to the author, students get better grades probably because ______. A.their homes are full of books
B.they have read War and Peace
C.their educated parents value education
D.their parents are successful booksellers
5、We can draw the conclusion from the passage that _______.
A.connection arc pure accidents
B.cause and effect are interdependent
C.connections are mostly cause and effect
D.linked events may turn out to be unrelated
25.(10分)Teenagers will be told to "stand up for their elders" on public transport — or risk losing their right to free travel.
London Mayor Boris Johnson will declare plans today to make youngsters sign a “courtesy pledge" (文明宣言) to promise to behave in a respectful manner when travelling in the capital. The three-point pledge states that they will give up their seats to the elderly, pregnant and disabled; keep from using offensive or threatening language; and be courteous and polite to fellow passengers and staff.
Those who refuse, or are caught behaving in a loutish manner, will have their free travel passes removed. The plan — a key part of Mr. Johnson's re-election bid— will initially affect the 400,000 11-to-15-year-olds in London who qualify for free travel cards, but Tory sources believe the idea could be used across the country.
A Conservative insider said: "The plan corresponds perfectly with the push to create a Big Society. It is about changing culture and expectations around behavior to improve the atmosphere on buses and trains for everyone."
Speaking before today's launch, Mr. Johnson said he was determined to deal with the anti-social behavior of a "minority of youngsters" on public transport. "When I was a boy, I was taught to stand up for those less able to, "he said. "Youngsters enjoy the privilege of free travel, which is paid for by Londoners, but they have to understand
that with that privilege comes responsibility. Anyone who abuses this privilege will have it taken away, and will have to earn that right bach ."
Teenagers found guilty of a serious violation of the new behavior rules will lose
their travel passes, and will have to carry out unpaid community work to earn them back.
Mr. Johnson is also introducing a "two strikes and you're out" policy to deal with repeat offenders, under which those committing a second serious violation of the rules will lose their travel rights permanently.
1、Which of the following is NOT the content of the "courtesy pledge"? A.Teenagers should give up their seats to the old.
B.Teenagers shouldn't talk with strangers in public.
C.Teenagers mustn't use aggressive language in public.
D.Teenagers must be polite to people on public transport.
2、What does the underlined word "loutish" in Paragraph 3 most probably mean? A.rude. B.stupid.
C.polite. D.calm.
3、According to Mr Johnson,____________.
A.youngsters should know duty comes with benefit.
B.youngsters shouldn't use the privilege of free travel.
C.anyone shouldn't make money with the privilege.
D.youngsters should do some unpaid community work.

第二节书面表达(满分25分)
29、Recently our class has conducted a survey about “The growth of 00's generation”. People’s opinions on it are divided.
Some people think that the 00's generation are confident, ambitious and independent in thinking. What's more, they are fond of new things, ready to accept and try them. It's especially worth mentioning that they are enthusiastic and caring. They treasure friendship and are good at communicating with others.
However, others argue that the post-00's generation are too self-centered and dependent on their parents in life or teachers in studies. They tend to live a comfortable life but are less able to overcome frustration. Besides, some of them lack the sense of responsibility and don't know how to show gratitude to others. Worse still, many are so weak in controlling themselves that they are often addicted to the Internet.
As a member of them, I think we post-00's generation should be aware of our own strengths and weaknesses, so that we can put emphasis on perfecting ourselves. Only in this way can we gain respect and faith from others.。
