When a cat is frightened, its heart starts beating faster, its muscles get tense, and there are changes in the chemicals in its bl oodstream. Although the cat doesn’t realize this, its body is getting ready for action. If the danger continues, the animal will do one of two things. It will defend itself, or it will run away as fast as it can.Something like this also happens to people. When we are excited, angry, scared, or aroused by other emotions, our bodies go through many physical changes. Our hearts beat faster, and our muscles get tense. All of these changes make us more alert and ready to react. We, too, get ready to defend ourselves or run.Human beings, however, have a problem that animals never face. If we give way to our feelings and let them take over, we can get into trouble. Have you ever said something in anger—orhit somebody—and regretted it later? Have you ever shouted at a teacher, told somebody you were lonely, or said you were in love, and then wished later you had kept your mouth shut? It isn’t always wise to express your feelings freely.Does this mean that it’s smarter always to hide our feelings? No! If you keep feelings of anger, sadness, and bitterness hidden away or bottled up inside, your body stays tense. Physical illness can develop, and you can feel churned up inside. It can actually be bad for your health. (It isn’t good to keep pleasant feelings inside either; all feelings need to be expressed.)Feeling that you keep all bottled up inside, don’t just go away. It’s as if bought some bananas and stuck them in a cupboard. You might not be able to see them, but before long you’d smell them, if you opened the cupboard, chances are you’d see little fruit flies hovering all over them. They’d be rotten. You can try to treat emotions as if they were bananas in the cupboard. You can hide them and you can pretend they don’t exist, but they’ll still be around. And at last you’ll have to deal with them, just like those bananas.56. What does the word “emotion s” in the second paragraph mean?A. actsB. feelingsC. measurementsD. thinking57. The best title for this article is __________.A. Emotions Affect Our BodiesB. What Happens to A Frightened CatC. What Happens to An Excited PersonD. Feelings That People Have58. The author wrote this article in order to __________.A. tell us that it isn’t good to keep feelings insideB. give us some advice on how to express our feelingsC. compare man with a scared cat and suggest mankind learn from it.D. make us know that it isn’t always wise to express our feelings freelyBA century ago in the United States, when an individual brought suit(起诉)against a company, public opinion tended to protect that company. But perhaps this phenomenon was most striking in the case of the railroads. Nearly half of all carelessness cases decided through 1896 involved railroads. And the railroads usually won. Most of the cases were decided in sate courts, when the railroads had the climate of the times on their sides. Government supported the railroad industry; the progress railroads represented was not to be slowed down by requiring them often to pay damages to those unlucky enough to be hurt working for them.Court decisions always went against railroad workers. A Mr. Farwell, an engineer, lost his right hand when a switchman carelessly ran his engine off the track. The court reasoned that since Farwell had taken the job of an engineer voluntarily at good pay, he had accepted the risk. Therefore the accident, though avoidable had the switchmen acted carefully, was a "pure accident". In effect arailroad could never be held responsible for injury to one employee caused by the mistake of another. In one case where a Pennsylvania Railroad worker had started a fire at a warehouse and the fire had spread several blocks, causing widespread damage, a jury found the company responsible for all the damage. But the court overturned the jury's decision because it argued that the railroad's carelessness was the immediate cause of damage only to the nearest buildings. Beyond them the connection was too far-off to consider. As the century wore on, public feeling began to turn against the railroads -- against their economic and political power and high fares as well as against their coldness toward individuals.59. Which of the following is NOT true in Farwell's case?A. Farwell was injured because he carelessly ran his engine off the track.B. Farwell would not have been injured if the switchman had been more careful.C. The court argued that the victim had accepted the risk since he had willingly taken his job.D. The court decided that the railroad should not be held responsible.60. What must have happened after the fire case was settled in court?A. The railroad worker paid for the property damage himself.61. The following aroused public anger EXCEPT _____.A. political powerB. high faresC. economic lossD. indifference62. That’s espe cially true of children who remain in abusive homes because the law blindly favors biological parents. It's also true of children who suffer for years in foster (收养) homes because of parents who can't or won't care for them but refuse to give up custody (监护) rights.Fourteen-year-old Kimberly Mays fits neither description, but her recent court victory could eventually help children who do. Kimberly has been the object of an angry custody battle between the man who raised her and her biological parents, with whom she has never lived. A Florida judge ruled that the teenager can remain with the only father she's ever known and that her biological parents have “no legal right” on her.The ruling, though it may yet be reversed (颠倒) , sets aside the principle that biology is the primary determinant of parentage. That's an important development, though not so much in time.Shortly after birth in December 1978, Kimberly Mays and another infant were mistakenly switched and sent home with the wrong parents. Kimberly’s biological parents, Ernest and Regina Twigg, received a child who died of a heart disease in 1988. Medical tests showed that the child wasn’t the Twiggs’ own daughter, but Kim only was, thus causing a custody battle with Robert Mays. In 1989, the two families agreed that Mr. Mays would continue to have custody with the Twiggs getting visiting rights. Those rights were ended when Mr. Mays decided that Kimberly was being harmed. The decision to leave Kimberly with Mr. Mays caused people to debate her suit. But the judge made clear that Kimberly did have rights to make a decision on her own behalf. Thus he made clear that she was more than just possession to be handled as adults saw fit.Certainly, the biological link between parent and child is important. But biological parents aren’t always preferable to adoptive ones, and biological parentage does not have an complete ownership that cancels (取消) all the rights of children.67. What was first of all considered in the Florida judge’s ruling?A. The biological link.B. The child’s benefits.C. The true practice.D. The parents’ feelings.68. We can learn from the Kimberly case that _______.A. children are more than just personal possessions of their parentsB. the biological link between parent and child should be paid more attention toC. foster homes bring children more pain and suffering than careD. biological parents shouldn't demand of custody rights after their child is adopted69. The Twiggs demanded of custody rights to Kimberly because _______.A. they found her unhappy in Mr. Mays’ custodyB. they regarded her as their propertyC. they were her biological parentsD. they felt very sorry about their past mistake70. Kimberly had been given to Mr. Mays _______.A. by complete accidentB. at his requestC. out of the hospital’s mistakesD. for better careEIt is difficult to imagine what life would be like without memory. The meanings of thousands of everyday perceptions (感知物) , the bases for the decisions we make, and the roots of our habits and skills are to be found in our past experiences, which are brought into the present by memory.Memory can be defined as the capacity to keep information available (有效的) for later use. It includes not only “remembering”things like arithmetic or historical facts, but also involves any change in the way an animal typically behaves. Memory is involved when a rat gives up eating grain because he has sensed something suspicious in the grain pile. Memory is also involved when a six-year-old child learns to swing a baseball bat.Memory exists not only in humans and animals but also in some physical objects and machines.Computers, for example, contain devices for storing data (数据) for later use. It is interesting to compare the memory-storage capacity of a computer with that of a human being. The instantaccess memory of a large computer may hold up to 100000 “words” ready for instant use. An average U.S. ? teenager probably recognizes the meaning of about 100000 words of English. However, this is but a fraction (片段) of the total amount of information which the teenager has stored. Consider, for example, the number of faces and places that the teenager can recognize on sight. The use of words is the basis of the advanced problem-solving intelligence of human beings. A large part of a person’s memory is in terms of words and combinations of words.71. According to the passage, memory is considered to be ________.A. the basis for decision making and problem solvingB. an ability to store experiences for future useC. an intelligence (智慧) typically possessed by human beingsD. the data mainly consisting of words and combinations of words72. The comparison made between the memory capacity of a large computer and that of ahuman being shows that ________.A. the computer’ s memory ha s a little bigger capacity than a teenager’sB. the computer’s memory capacity is much better than an adult human being’sC. the computer’s memory capacity is much smaller even than a teenager’sD. the memory capacity of a teenager’s should be full made use of73. The whole passage implies that_________.A. only human beings have problem-solving intelligenceB. a person’s memory is different from a computer’s in every respectC. animals are able to solve only very simple problemsD. animals solve problems by instincts (本能) and intelligence74. The phrase “in terms of” in the last sentence can best be replaced by_______.A. changing intoB. expressed byC. making upD. made up of75. Which of the following is the topic of the passage?A. What life would be like without memory.B. Memory is of complete importance to life.C. How a person’s memory is different from an animal’s or a computer’s.D. His paintings were all characterized by a strong love and sympathy for people. His high school art teacher felt he had a special talent.Marshall’s father didn’t want him to be a painter, however. Mr. Donaldson wanted his son to be a stockbroker(股票经纪人). He wanted Marshall to continue the dynasty started by his great-great grandfather in 1820. The family business, Donaldson and Donaldson Inc., was now a large, successful investment firm.Mr. Donaldson felt Marshall was much too individualistic. “Listen,” he told his son, “I had no say in choosing my career. I just did what my dad told me.”“But you are good at business,”Marshall replied. “I’m not. I’m sure I would just cause trouble for you and problems for the company.” Marshall felt there was no way he could ever fill his father’s shoes. And, although he was no stranger to high society, he didn’t feel comfortable among the wealthy. He preferred the ordinary, working-class people of the city. His paintings told of their struggles and their hopes.Sometimes after school Marshall would hang around outside a factory gate. He would draw the workers as they came out at the end of their shift. Marshall wondered how they could keep doing that hard, boring work year after year. Then he realized most of them would be doing something different if they could. But their great obstacle in life was lack of education. When Marshall got home, he would take out his paintings. The paintings expressed his sympathy and respect for those hard-working people.Well, Marshall never did enter the family business. This angered his father. But as Marshall got older, his career as an artist began to take off. He became quite famous, and people paid large amounts for his “plain people” paintings. In time, this success won Marshall’s dad over. Mr. Donaldson could see his son was born to paint. Marshall was glad his father finally came around. And happily, the two began to work together after all. Twice each year they held a benefit art show.Marshall donated a number of his paintings to be sold at each show. The persuasive Mr. Donaldson got his wealthy friends and clients(客户) to attend—and to spend. The money from the art sales was used to help factory workers improve their education.65. Why didn’t Marshall’s father want Marshall to be a painter at first?A. He thought Marshall was good at business rather than art.B. He expected Marshall to continue their family business.C. Further professional development.D. Bad health condition of a family member.(C)Thirty years ago, public health officials in the United States reported on the first cases of what came to be known as AIDS.But today an estimated sixteen and a half million children have lost one or both parents to AIDS. Millions more live with adults who are sick from AIDS.Lucie Cluver from Oxford University in England has studied children of AIDS(AIDS orphaned children and children living with sick adults) in South Africa. She says children can be deeply affected by their experiences. And one of the biggest impacts we see is mental health, their psychological health. So, for example, we see that AIDS orphaned children have very much higher levels of depression, anxiety and stress disorder than children who have a live parent or children whose parents have died of other causes. Lucie Cluver says children have to live with the sense of shame connected to AIDS. Many are abused(欺负) at school or excluded from the community.Children living with sick adults are more likely to live in poverty and face physical and emotional abuse. Also, Lucie Cluver says the children often become the caregivers. They’re missing school to go and get medication. They’re often taking them to the toilet, cleaning their wounds or washing their bedclothes. So these kids find it ve ry stressful and upsetting. They’re very worried about the health and feel responsible for the health of the sick person. Close contact with sick adults can sometimes spread tuberculosis(肺结核) or other diseases. And, as Lucie Cluver said, even when the children are in school, paying attention can be difficult. It’s constantly on their minds and really making it difficult for them to do well at school. She calls for testing more children for tuberculosis. She also calls for giving more parents the drugs needed to keep them healthy longer with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.There are programs to help children, but there is “far more to be done.” Interventions(干预治疗) and support groups are “urgently needed” for those orphaned by AIDS or living with sick adults. But the evidence for which interventions are effective “is still thin”.72. The topic of the passage is __________.A. children of AIDS doing badly at schoolB. more and more children suffering from AIDSC. children of AIDS facing mental problemsD. an increasing number of people dying of AIDS73. According to Lucie Cluver, AIDS orphaned children have very much higher levels ofdepression mainly because they __________.A. have a sense of shame connected to AIDSB. cannot focus their attention on study at schoolC. are more likely to be affected with tuberculosisD. often have to miss school to look after their sick parents74. We can infer from the last paragraph that __________.A. enough has been done for children of AIDSB. interventions prove very effective for children of AIDSC. nothing can be done to help children except interventionsD. interventions may be useful for helping children of AIDS75. Which of the following is true according to the passage?A. The first case of AIDS occurred 30 years ago.B. Children whose parents are infected with AIDS often help with housework.C. Children whose parents have died of causes other than AIDS don’t have stress disorder.D. Children don’t have psychological problems when their parents are still alive with HIV. Section CDirections: Read the following text and choose the most suitable heading from A-F for each paragraph. There is one extra heading which you do not need.Making informed choices before and during your trip is the single most important thing you can do to become a responsible traveler. With a little planning, you can improve the quality of your trip, while making a real difference to the people and places you visit.76. ______________________________Search the web and consult guidebooks to start your pre-trip homework. Look for information and resources on eco tourism. Ecotourism Explorer, TIES’ interactive online directory, makes searching for your perfect eco-holiday easy! Choose guidebooks with information on your destination’s environmental, social and political issues, and read before booking.77. ______________________________Call or email tour operators that have firsthand knowledge of the place you are considering visiting. Check the websites of all accommodations. Let tour operators/hotels know that you are a responsible consumer. Before you book, ask about their social and environmental policies. For instance - What is your environmental policy? What percentage of your employees are local citizens? Do you support any projects to benefit the local community?78. ______________________________Are the businesses you’re considering certified? Do they have eco-label ratings, or have they won eco-awards? Have you heard of the AAA or 5-star rating systems? These long-standing labels judge hotel quality and services. Many certification programs have also been created in tourism to rate the environmental and social impacts of tourism businesses. These programs are important tools for distinguishing genuine ecotourism companies, products or services from those that are merely using “eco-” as a marketing tool to attract consumers. More and more companies have earned eco-labels, and we encourage you to purchase from these businesses.79. ______________________________A growing number of tourism businesses are helping to financially and materially support community projects and offering travelers the opportunity to get involved. Many of TIES members around the globe are leading the efforts to give back to local communities and enhance the livelihoods of local people through ecotourism. We encourage you to contribute to and participate in these projects, and support those companies that are making positive impacts on the lives of local hosts.80. ______________________________Don’t Be Fooled by green-washing. “Eco” is a fashionable label used widely in the tourism industry. It sounds appealing, but much of what is marketed as “eco” is simply traditional tourism with superficial changes. So it’s important to check behind the labels.Section DDirections: Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words.A finding in recent years shows that men cannot manufacture blood as efficiently as women can. This makes surgery riskier for men. Men also need more oxygen because they do not breathe as often as women. But men breathe more deeply and this exposes them to another risk. They draw more of the air into their lungs when it is polluted.Men’s bones are larger than women’s and they are arranged somewhat differently. The female walk that causes so many whistles is a matter of bone structure. A man has broader shoulders and a narrower pelvis(骨盆), which makes him walk with no waste moti on. A woman’s wider pelvis, designed for childbearing, forces her to put more movement into each step she takes with the result that she displays a bit of jiggle and sway(摇摆) as she walks. If you think a man is brave because he can climb a ladder to clean the roof, don’t forget it is easier for him than for a woman. The angle at which a woman’s thigh(大腿) is joined to her knees makes climbing difficult for her, whether it is a ladder or stairs or a mountain that she is climbing.A man’s skin is thicker than a woman’s and not nearly as soft. This prevents the sun’s radiation from getting through, which is why men wrinkle less than women do. Women have a thin layer of fat just under the skin and there is a plus to this greater fat reserve. It acts as an invisible fur coat to keep a woman warmer in the winter. Women also stay cooler in summer because the fat layer helps protect them against heat. Men’s fat is distributed differently. And they do not have that layer of it underneath their skin. In fact, they have considerably less fat than women and more muscle. 41 percent of a man’s body is muscle compared to thirty-five percent for women, which means that men have more muscle power. The higher proportion of muscle to fat makes it easier for men to lose weight. Muscle burns up five more calories a pound than fat does just to maintain itself. So when a man wants to lose weight, the pounds roll off much faster.(Note: Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN TEN WORDS.) 81. What is this passage mainly about?_______________________________________________________________________________82. That men breathe more deeply can result in a risk of _____________________________.83. The female walk with a bit of jiggle and sway is caused by the fact that ____________________________________________________________________.84. Why do women lose weight more difficultly than men?_______________________________________________________________________________第Ⅱ卷(共45分)I. before anyone knew where it would lead—which is to test the power of like-minded people working together to turn inspiration into action.Four years ago Bobby was in Rwanda offering help to the people there and taking photos of a child soldier named Moise with his “soccer ball”,which was a pile of rubbish tied together with a string. This “ball” was the only thing Moise could call his own—no family,no home,no place to go.Forced to fight in the Congo andhaving killed three people at the unbearably young age of seven, the boy's spirit was broken. And Bobby knew,as he took one photo after the next, that he'd never forget him.In fact,he returned the following year to tell Moise he had stayed deep within his heart—but he was gone.I recently helped Bobby launch his new book The Po w er of the

How often do you think about fighting germs?•Finding:Seniors are not fighting germs as well as they should.•Step:Be aware of germs. Do you know it is not your toilet but your kitchen sponge(海绵)that can carry more germs than anything else? To kill these germs, keep your sponge in the microwave for 10 seconds.36. What is found out about American seniors?A. Most of them have good habits.B. Nearly 30%of them bathe three days a week.C. All of them are fighting germs better than expected.D. About one third of them brush their teeth only once a day37. Doctors suggest that people should wash their hands .A. twice a dayB. three times a dayC. four times a dayD. eight times a day38. Which of the following is true according to the text?A. We should keep from touching our faces.B. There are less than 300 types of bacteria in the mouth.C.A kitchen sponge can carry more germs than a toilet.D. We should wash our hands before touching a door handle.39. The text probably comes from __________.A. a guide bookB. a popular magazineC. a book review D .an official documentBAre you an optimist? Do you look at your glass and see it ashalf full? Do you believe that every cloud has a silver lining and thatgenerally things turn out for the best? Do you believe that ifsomething is meant to be, it will be? If you reply “yes” to all of thesequestions, then you are an optimist. You probably are enthusiastic, cheerful and outgoing. You may well be successful at work and inlove. But you may be misguided because things don’t turn out for the best. You may believe that when one door closes another one opens (for example, you may fail to obtain a new job, another chance will come around soon), Wrong. When one door closes, another door slams in your face. That's bitter reality. Now a book has been published which confirms what we pessimists (悲观者) have suspected all along. It's called The Positive Power of Defensive Pessimism. Its author argues that defensive pessimism can lead to positive results. Defensive pessimism is a strategy used to manage fear, anxiety and worry. Defensive pessimists prepare for things by setting low outcomes for themselves. They carefully consider everything that may go wrong and plan for ways to handle these problems. And this gives them a sense of control. Lawrence Sanno, a psychology professor, says, “What’s interesting about defensive pessimists is that they tend to be very successful people, so their low opinion of the situation’s outcomes is not realistic. They use it to motivate themselves to perform better. ”So far, so good. This is not rocket science. Defensive pessimists prepare carefully and consider what might go wrong, whether at work, on a date or even in a sports game. It makes sense to have a back-up plan. There are many sayings in English urging caution. For example, “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket,” and “ Don’t count your chickens until they hatch. “ To have a confident and optimistic approach to life’s problems is good. But listen to what Woody Alien, the American comedian says, ”Confidence is what you have before you understand the problem.”There are pros and cons to being an optimist and a pessimist. Don’t feel bad if you see the glass half empty. You are a realist. But lighten up and hook up with someone who sees the same glass half full.40. What is the passage mainly about?A. A book that has recently been published.B. The dangers of being too optimistic.C. How to become successful in life.D. The benefits of defensive pessimism.41. The u nderlined sentence “This is not rocket science” in paragraph 4 means ______.A. it is quite simple to understandB. there is no real proofC. it’s not a dangerous thing to doD. the cost is not so high42. The writer would probably describe himself as ______.A. an optimistB. a defeatistC. a realistD. a scientist43. Which of the following English expressions would a defensive pessimist believe?A. “Every cloud has a silver lining.”B. “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.”C. “Whatever will be, will be.”D. “The glass is half full not half empty.”CAccording to sociologists(社会学家), every modern industrial society has some form of social stratification(阶层). Class, power and status are important in deciding people’s rank in society.Class means a person’s economic position in society. A commonly used classification is lower cla ss, middle class and upper class. While sociologists disagree on how these terms should be exactly defined, they do describe societies like the United States quite well. One study shows that 53% of Americans belong to the lower class, 46% the middle class, and 1% the upper class. Interestingly, a surgeon earning $500,000 a year and a bus driver earning $50,000 a year both regard themselves as the middle class!Power refers to the amount of control a person has over other people. Obviously, people in positions of great power (such as governors) exercise(行使)big power, but people who take orders from others have less power. Power and class do not always go hand in hand, however. For example, the governor of a state has great power, but he or she may not belong to a corresponding (相应的)economic class. Generally, however, there is a relationship between power and class. To our knowledge, there aren’t too many people who aren’t millionaires in the U.S. Senate!Status is the honor or respect attached to a person’s position in society. It can also be affected by power and class, but not necessarily so. For example, a university professor may have a high status but not belong to a high social class or have a lot of power over others.44. What can we learn about “the middle class” from Paragraph 2?A. People earning $50,000 a year belong to the middle class.B. Nearly half Americans belong to the middle class.C. People generally consider bus drivers as the middle class.D. Sociologists have a clear definition of the middle class.45. According to the text, we know that _____.A. power and class do not always correspond with each otherB. status refers to a person’s economic position in societyC. people with high status have a lot of control over othersD. class is less important in deciding a person ’s social rank46. Which of the following shows the structure of the whole text?A B C D P=paragraphDIt had been a long time since I had been to Jacksonville, Florida. I had driven to town hoping to see the old barber shop where my hair had been cut as a child.I parked my truck and decided to try and locate a telephone to see if the Florida Barber College had moved to a new location. After walking about a block I saw an open shoe store. I walked inside and asked if I could use their telephone book. Unable to find a listing for the Barber College, I picked out the number of a local beauty salon, hoping they might tell me if the barber college was still in business. The number was busy, so I decided to wait and try again in a few minutes. As the salesman and I stood talking the front door opened and a young man about twenty came into the store pushing himself in a wheelchair. “I need a new pair of shoes,” said the customer. As he turned the corner, there was a blanket across his lap. I was shocked to see that the young man had no legs.“A gift for a friend?” I asked the boy. “No,” he replied. They are for me,” he continued, with a smile on his face. I just smiled back and watched to see what would happen next.“What type of shoe would you like?” asked the clerk. “How about a pair of cowboy boots?” The man pointed to the back wall where three or four pairs of boots were displayed. The salesman, sharply turning, headed off to the backroom.“Isn’t this fun?” the boy asked me. I moved my hand to let him know that I did not understand his question. “When I was a kid, my parents used to buy me a new pair of shoes every year. That was such a wonderful feeling. Something I have never forgotten. The smell of the leather and the pride I felt when I walked around the store showing off my new shoes.”The salesman came walking down the aisle with a large box.
