City people always appear to be hurrying to getwhere they are going, restlessly seeking attention in a store, or elbowing others as they try to complete their shopping. Racing through daytime meals is part of the pace of life in this country. Working time is considered precious. Others in public eating-places are waiting for you to finish so they, too, can be served and get back to work within the time allowed. You also find drivers will be abrupt and people will push past you. You will miss smiles, brief conversations and smallexchange with strangers. Don’t take it personally. This is because people value time highly, and they resent someone else “wasting” it beyond a certainappropriate point.Marriage Across NationsWe wanted to avoid the mistake made by couples marrying for the wrong reasons, and only finding out ten, twenty, or thirty years later that they were incompatible, that they hardly took the time to know each other, that they overlooked serious personality conflicts in the expectation that marriage was an automatic way to make everything work out right. That point was emphasized by the fact that Gail’s parents, after thirty-five years of marriage, were going through a bitter and painful divorce, which had destroyed Gail and for a time had a negative effect on our budding relationship.Weeping For My Smoking DaughterMy father died from “the poor man’s friend”, pneumonia, one hard winter when his lung illness had left him low. I doubt he had much lung left at all, after coughingfor so many years. He had so little breath that, during his last years, he was always learning on something. I remembered once, at a family reunion, when my daughter was two, that my father picked her up for a minute——long enough for me to photograph them——but the effort was obvious. Near the very end of his life, and largely because he had no more lungs, he quit smoking. He gained a couple of pounds, but by then he was so slim that no one noticed.Lighten Your load And Save Your LifeFor many people, the root of their stress is anger, and the trick is to find out where the anger is coming from. “Does the anger come from a feeling that everything must be perfect?” Eliot asks.“That’s very common in professional women. They feel they have to be all things to all people and do it all perfectly. They think, ‘I should, I must, I have to.’Good enough is never good enough. Perfectionists cannot delegate. They get angry that they have to carry it all, and they blow their tops. Then they feel guilty and they start the whole cycle over again.”三、结构选择(见书)四、翻译1.她连水都不喝,更别提留下来吃饭了。

DPart II Reading Comprehension (20%)Passage 1The typical conversation between Americans takes a form that can be called repartee. No one speaks for very long. Speakers take turns frequently, often after only a few sentences have been spoken. “Watching a conversation between two Americans is like watching a table tennis game,” a British observer said. “Your head goes back and forth and back and forth so fast it almost makes your neck hurt.”Americans tend to be impatient with people who take long turns. Such people are said to “talk too much.” Many Americans have difficulty paying attention to someone who speaks more than a few sentences at a time, as Nigerians, Arabs, and some others do. Americans admireconciseness, or what they call “getting to the point.”Americans engage in little ritual interaction (礼仪式的交流). Onlya few ritual greetings are common: “How are you?” “I’m fine, thankyou,” “Nice to meet you,” and “Hope to see you again.” These things are said in certain situations Americans learn to recognize, and, like any ritual greetings, are concerned more with form than with substance. That is, the questions are supposed to be asked and the statements are supposed to be made in particular situations, no matter what the people involved are feeling or what they really have in mind. In many American’s opinions, people who rely heavily on ritual greetings are “too shy”or “too polite,” unwilling to reveal their true natures and ideas.Americans are generally impatient with long ritual greetings about family me mbers’ health—common among Latin Americans—considering thema waste of time.26.During a typical conversation between Americans, people try to be________.a. politeb. interestedc. concised. friendly27. By comparing a conversation between two Americans to a table tennisgame, the British observer means that _________.a. Americans like to take short turns in a conversationb. Americans enjoy talking as well as watching a table tennis gamec. Americans get excited easilyd. Americans talk with great expression28. Americans ___________ when they talk with Arabs.a. may lose their patienceb. have to listen very carefullyc. talk too muchd. never use English29. In the United States, ritual greetings __________.a. are very common in people’s conversationsb. are suitable in all situationsc. help to lead to a serious conversationd. have little substance30. According to this passage, Americans have a low opinion of peoplewho ____________.a.. do not talk muchb. do not pay attention to the speakerc. like to ask about other people’s healthd. bring too many ritual greetings into a conversationPassage 2Ask most American children what they want to be when they grow up,a nd they probably will say “doctor” or “lawyer.”Though our culture, our economy, indeed our very security are heavily dependent on science and engineering, only 12 percent of American high school students graduate with the prerequisites(必要条件) for a career in science or engineering. Worse yet, only 6 percent of minority children are said to be so prepared.Don’t be too surprised. If you ask further why the majority of the high school students would choose a career in medicine or law, the answers will be straight out of some popular TV shows.“Doctors help people. They save lives.” “Lawyers beat the bad guys.” Most students would say. Now, how about science or engineering as a career choice? The answers will be just as predictable: “Get real! Who wa nts to be a geek? They all are nerds. Besides, I hate math.”In our media, scientists and engineers typically are portrayed as introverted(内向的) and humorless. They always wear white lab coats, with a collection of pencils in their pocket protectors. They wear glasses with black plastic frames. If more students are to choose technical careers, they must have a better view presented to them. They need to be told, for instance, that the invention of lifesaving equipment saves lives just as surely as the application of it in the hospital. It also might help if someone emphasized to students that the lawyer who saved the defendant(被告) by introducing the DNA evidence would have seen him hanged had it not been for the scientists who discovered DNA.Whatever we do, u ntil students stop thinking of the term “engineer”as a synonym for “geek,” it is impossible to expect our children to change their views towards scientists and engineers.31. What is the problem with most American children when they choose theircareers?a. They have a very low opinion of science and engineering.b. They are too anxious to succeed in different fields.c. They are not sure what career suits them best.d. They do not have enough confidence in themselves.32. Which of the following has influenced American students greatly intheirchoice of their careers?a. Parents’ opinions.b. TV shows and various publications.c. Great discoveries made by doctors and lawyers.d. Culture and economy.33. In the passage, the writer criticizes the media for ___________.a. depicting scientists and engineers as nerds and geeksb. creating too much violence in the societyc. failing to report the great achievements made by scientistsd. using words like “nerd” and “geek” inap propriately34. In order to change the students’ view towards scientists andengineers, the writer suggests that _________.a. teachers reconsider their way of teaching mathematicsb. students be told about the wonders of science and engineeringc. scientists and engineers change their images a little bitd. the media stop praising doctors and lawyers excessively35. Judging from what is said in the passage, the writer obviouslybelieves that _________.a. scientists and engineers are more important than doctors and lawyersb. science and engineering have been dangerously ignoredc. American children are hopelessd. there are too many scientists and engineers nowadaysPassage 3Reaching new peaks of popularity in North America is Iceberg Water, which is harvested from icebergs off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada.Arthur von Wiesenberger, who carries the title Water Master, is one of the few water critics in North America. As a boy, he spent time in the larger cities of Italy, France and Switzerland, where bottled water is consumed daily. Even then, he kept a water journal, noting the brands he liked best. “My dog could tell the difference between bottled and tap water,” He says. But is plain tap water all that bad? Not at all. In fact, New York’s municipal water for more than a century was called the champagne of tap water and until recently considered among the best in the world in terms of both taste and purity. Similarly, a magazine in England found that tap water from the Thames River tasted better than several leading brands of bottled water that were 400 times more expensive.Nevertheless, soft-drink companies view bottled water as the next battle-ground for market share—this despite the fact that over 25percent of bottled w ater comes from tap water: PepsiCo’s Aquafina and Coca-Cola’s Dasani are both purified tap water rather than spring water. As diners thirst for leading brands, bottlers and restaurateurs salivate (垂涎) over the profits. A restaurant’s typical mark-up on wine is 100 to 150 percent, whereas on bottled water it’s often 300 to 500 percent. But since water is much cheaper than wine, and many of the fancier brands aren’t available in stores, most diners don’t notice or care.As a result, some restaurants are turning up the pressure to sell bottled water. According to an article in The Street Journal, some of the more shameless tactics include placing attractive bottles on the table for a visual sell, listing brands on the menu without prices, and pouring bottled water without even asking the diners if they want it.Regardless of how it’s sold, the popularity of bottled water taps into our desire for better health, our wish to appear cultivated, and even a longing for lost purity.36. What do we know about Iceberg Water from the passage?a. It is a kind of iced water.b. It is just plain tap water.c. It is a kind of bottled water.d. It is a kind of mineral water.37. By saying “My dog could tell the difference between bottled and tap water” (Para. 2), von Wiesenb erger wants to convey the message that ________.a. plain tap water is certainly unfit for drinkingb. bottled water is clearly superior to tap waterc. bottled water often appeals more to dogs tasted. dogs can usually detect a fine difference in taste38. The “fancier brands” (Para. 5) refers to ________.a. tap water from the Thames Riverb. famous wines not sold in ordinary storesc. PepsiCo’s Aquafina and Coca-Cola’s Dasanid. expensive bottled water with impressive names39. Why are some restaurants turning up the pressure to sell bottled water?a. Bottled water brings in huge profits.b. Competition from the wine industry is intense.c. Most diners find bottled water affordable.d. Bottled water satisfied diners’ desire to fashionable.40. According to passage, why is bottled water so popular?a. It is much cheaper than wine.b. It is considered healthier.c. It appeals to more cultivated people.d. It is more widely promoted in the market.Passage 4As we have seen, the focus of medical care in our society has been shifting from curing disease to preventing disease—especially in terms of changing our many unhealthy behaviors, such as poor eating habits, smoking, and failure to exercise. The line of thought involved in this shift can be pursued further. Imagine a person who is about the right weight, but does not eat very nutritious (有营养的) foods, who feels OK but exercises only occasionally, who goes to work every day, but is not an outstanding worker, who drinks a few beers at home most nights but does not drive while drunk, and who has no chest pains or abnormal blood counts, but sleeps a lot and often feels tired. This person is not ill. He may not even be at risk for any particular disease. But we can imagine that this person could be a lot healthier. The field of medicine has not traditionally distinguished between someone who is merely “not ill” and someone who is in excellent health and pays attention to the body’s special needs. Both types have simply been called “well.” In recent year s, however, some health specialists have begun to apply the terms “well” and “wellness” only to those who are actively striving to maintain and improve their health. People who are well are concerned with nutrition and exercise, and they make a point of mo nitoring their body’s condition. Most important, perhaps, people who are well take active responsibility for all matters related to their health. Even people who have a physical disease or handicap (缺陷) may be “well,” in this new sense, if they make an eff ort to maintain the best possible health they can in the face of their physical limitations. “Wellness” may perhaps best be viewed not as a state that people can achieve, but as an ideal that people can strive for. People who are well are likely to be better able to resist disease and to fight disease when it strikes. And by focusing attention on healthy ways of living, the concept of wellness can have a beneficial impact on the ways in which people face the challenges of daily life.41. Unit OneActivity 5 Abook of memoriesYearbooks in the United StatesMost high schools in the United States publish a yearbook. The yearbook comes out once a year, usually in the spring. It is a record of the school year--- a “book of memories” for the students.Inside a yearbook is each student’s photo. The seniors a re graduating soon, and their photos appear first. Next are the juniors. They are one year behind the seniors. Next come the sophomores, or second year students. The last photos are the first-year students, the freshmen. The yearbook is not only about students. The teachers have photos, too. The yearbook also has photos and descriptions of sports teams, academic subject, and extracurricular activities. These are activities students do after school, such as the chess club and Spanish club. There is even a yearbook club. Students in this club write, design, and take photos all year for the yearbook. At the end of the year, the book is printed. In the yearbook, some students receive special titles. The seniors vote and choose the “class clown” ( a funny student), the “most likely to succeed” ( a student everyone thinks will be successful), and the “best dressed” ( a student with a good fashion sense). There are also other awards and categories.Students typically sign each other’s yearbooks. This is especially important for the seniors, because they are graduating. Students write notes to each other, such as, “we had a lot of fun,” or “ I’ll never forget you.” They also write about all the fun and funny experiences they shared in school together.Unit TwoActivity 5 World greetingsIn Brazil, men often shake hands when they meet for the first time. When women meet, they kiss each other on the cheek. Women also kiss male friends to say hello. When you shake hands, look at the person in the eyes. This shows interest and friendliness. In New Zealand, usually, both men and women shake hands when they meet someone for the first time, if you see two people pressing their noses together, they are probably Maori. The Maori are the native people of New Zealand. This is their traditional greeting. In Japan, when people meet for the first time, they usually bow. In business, people also shake hands. In formal situation, people often exchange business cards. When you give a business card, give it with two hands. This is polite. Special note: in Japan, when people smile it can have different meanings. It usually means that the person is happy, or that the person thinks something I funny. But is can also mean that the personis embarrassed.Unit ThreeActivity 5 The healthiest people in the worldThe healthiest lifestyle in the world? In many countries around the world, people are living longer than before. People have healthier lifestyles, and healthcare is better too. Okinawa is an island off the coast of Japan. The people on Okinawa, the Okinawans, may have the longest lives and healthiest lifestyles in the world.Researchers did a study. They started their study by looking at city and town birth records from 1879. They didn’t expect to find many centenarians in the records. They were very surprised to find so many old and healthy habits as well. They don’t do hard exercise such as weightlifting or jogging—instead, they prefer relaxing activities like gardening and walking. Researchers say that older Okinawans also have a good attitude about aging. They sit quietly and relax their minds with deep breathing exercises. They also enjoy massage.Unit FourActivity 5 TrendspottingToday I started my new part-time job as a trendspotter. I was nervous and didn’t know what to expect. Well, guess what? It was a lot of fun! I’m telling all my friends, “ You should think about becoming tredspotter, too!” On Saturday morning, we had to report to a recording studio by 10 a.m. The “Trends Coordinator”, Mandy, explained the sch edule. Then she gave us a tour. That was really cool!Next we sat around a big table in a room. They gave each person three cards. One card said “ Yes-All the way!” Another said, “It’s OK.” The third one said, “No way!” We listened to about 10 different songs. After each song we had to hold up a card. They played some hip hop, rock, heavy metal, and dance music. The heavy metal was “No way” for me.Do you know the rock group called “Gifted”? They’re really popular right now. Well, they have a new CD coming out. We saw six different CD covers. I guess they are trying to choose one. This time, we didn’t have any cards. Instead, we just talked about the covers we liked. Mandy asked us questions: “ Which ones do you like?” “Why do you like them?” “Would you buy a CD with this cover?”We finished at 12:30. We will meet again next week at a boutique downtown. We will look at some new fashions. Each week we go to a different location. Oh yeas, we also received a free CD for our work. This “job” doesn’t pay, bu t we get free stuff!Unit FiveActivity 5 The Marfa mystery lightsQ: Where is Marfa and what exactly is it famous for?A: Marfa is a small town in west Texas in the Unites states. It’s famous for the “ Marfa mystery lights.”Q: What are the mystery lights exactly?A: No one knows for sure. There are many different ideas about that. Q: Can you describe them?A: That’s a difficult question. Different people see different lights. They are not always the same. I can say that they appear after sunset in the sky. They dance mysteriously in air and vanish. Then they suddenly reappear. Q: Some people say they are car headlights. Do you think so?A: No, I don’t. A man first saw the mystery lights over 100 years ago. The man was Robert Ellison and the year was 1883. Of course we didn’t have cars in 1883.Q: What do you think causes the lights?A: There are many theories. The Native Americans thought the lights were stars falling to Earth. Some people think uranium gas causes the lights. Other people suggest that ball lightning does it. Ball lightning is lightning is the shape of circle. I t often appears just after a rainstorm. Q: What are some of the weirdest ideas about the lights?A: Well, some people call them “ghost lights”. They think ghosts do it. That’s the strangest idea. Some say they are UFOs. I don’t think so.Q: What do the experts say?A: They can’t figure it out. Some engineers even came from Japan one time. They studied the lights, but couldn’t solve the mystery.Q: Are the local people scared?A: No, actually, they aren’t. They like the lights. And every year in early September there’s a big town festival to celebrate the mystery lights.。

Iron and tin.听力原文:Passage One[26]We don t know how the first fire was made. Early fires on the earth were certainly caused by nature, not by man. Some were caused by lightning in a storm; others, perhaps by one hot material which came out of a volcano. Quite possibly, at times, the heat of the sun set light to some dry grass or leaves.[27]At first, man, like other animals, was probably afraid of fire. He saw that fire could destroy a forest; he knew that fire could hurt his body. So great was the power of fire that he feared it and worshipped it. Gradually, however, with his better powers of thinking, he overcame his fear. Probably he overcame most of his fear when he discovered how to make fire for himself. Throughout the ages he has learned more about fire, how to control it, and how to use it in many ways. Now fire is no longer a master or a god, it is a servant. Again, at some early date, man found how fire could be used to make certain metals from rocks.[28]Some time later, he found out how to make the metal which we now call bronze. This is a mixture of copper and tin. Bronze was a very useful metal. It was hard and tough, but he could shape it by hammering (probably with heavy stones). He could make a tool with a sharp edge for cutting. It isn t so easy to get iron from its ore and this metal was probably not discovered until very much later.答案解析:Questions 26 to 28 are based on the passage you have just heard.26. What do we know about early fires on the earth?[C]解析:短文开头即说:第一堆火是怎样生起来的,我们无从知道。

六、Roberto and Mike are in a restaurant. A woman is talking loudly on a cell phone. Roberto says, “I can’t stand cell phones.” Mike says he avoids taking calls in public unless it’s very important. But then Mike’s father calls to give Mike his new cell phone number. While they are talking, Mike’s mother calls on the other line. She starts to ask Mike to take a message, so he connects his mother and father. At that point, the same woman who was talking so loud on her phone earlier says to Mike, “Do you mind?” then she turns to her friend and says the same thing Roberto said. “I can’t stand cell phones-especially in public places!”。
