There’s one of the murderers called spectator What I want to talk about today is “spectators”. In a way, I can say we are all familiar with them because maybe they are our relatives or friends, even ourselves. Spectator who views events happened around his life just like a movie are only interested in the content of the event, but feel nothing about the real character in this event. Some features can be connected with them, such as indifference, turning a blind eye, unwilling to cause trouble. One of th eir pet phrases is: “oh, it’s nothing of my business”, can this words reminds you anybody around your life?

Spectator don’t emerge in th is new era. There’s been a long history of spectator in china. I don’t know its exact origin but I learned something happened in the war of aggression. In Luxun‟s famous work …True story of ah Q‟, the main character ah Q came back from the town talked with others about the execute of revolutionists, he just said it was very excited to see the decapitation.1There’s no d oubt that ah Q is typical of a spectator. And in this time, we can see spectators almost everywhere, a vivid example is the event of Xiaoyueyue, a pitiful girl. On 13th October, 2011, a two years old girl named Yueyue , playing on the alley, was crushed by a van twice, and then was run over by a small container truck. What the most astonishing thing is that within seven minutes, 18 passers-by just chose to leave when they saw Yueyue lying on the ground. Finally, a scavenger aunt held Yueyue up and found her mother. What a sad story it is, but there’s not the only story around us. People who incite the people standing on the high building to jump, people who stand by on the bus when sexual

harassment occurs, people who just spread the news for help on wechat but do nothing himself. They all are spectators, and to be honest, sometimes I am also a spectator since it’s too easy to be a spectator, on the country, to care and help others heart and soul may be kind of hard.

So why there are growing number of people who choose to be spectators?

The first reason maybe is connected with the Chinese traditional culture--“the doctrine of the mean”. We have been taught to be cautious about the things outside when we are small children. “Mind your own business.” might be the common words which our parents always talk to us and the influence of education will be permanent. Under the influence of this culture, t here’s a common feature in generations of Chinese, which is called “to preserve our sanity”. I don’t disagree with somebody who says it’s a life wisdom, however, it can’t be a cause or an instinct to turn a blind eye.

The second reason is the intensification of social contradictions. With the development of economy, the income gaps have also been widened, which increase people’s hate to society. Under this circumstance, when people see the misfortune of others, they maybe not feel sympathetic but show schadenfreude without moral constraint. It may sound morbid that somebody enjoys the misfortune of others, however, it is the reality. What’more, As souring social problems emerge, such as terror, tainted milk, cooking oil, the plane lost, building collapse, fluctuation of the prices and house prices and the economic crisis. All of these problem are challenging people’s confidence to life and increasing the social anxiety which means people have
