ASince many of you are planning to study at a college or university in this country, you may be curious(好奇的) to know what you usually do in a typical week, how you can get along with your fellow students, and so on. These are the questions I want to discuss with you today.First, let’s talk about what your weekly schedule will look like. No matter what your major may be, you can expect to spend between four and six hours a week for each class attending lectures. Lectures are usually in very large rooms because some courses such as introduction to sociology or economics often have as many as two or three hundred students, especially at large universities. In lectures it’s very imp ortant for you to take notes on what the professor says because the information in a lecture is often different from the information in your textbooks. Also, you can expect to have exam questions based on the lectures. So it isn’t enough to just read your textbooks; you have to attend lectures as well. In a typical week you will also have a couple of hours of discussion for every class you take .The discussion section is a small group meeting usually with fewer than thirty students where you can ask questions about the lectures, the reading, and the homework In large universities graduate students, called teaching assistants, usually direct discussion sections. If your major is chemistry, or physics, or another science, you ’ll also have to spend several hours a week in the lab, or laboratory, doing experiments. This means that science majors spend more time in the classroom than non-science majors do. On the other hand, pepople who major in subjects like literature or history usually have to read and write more than science majors do1. The main purpose of this text is___A. to help the students to learn about university lifeB. to persuade the students to attend lecturesC. to encourage the students to take part in discussionD.to advise the students to choose proper majors2. We can learn from the passage that university professors___A. spend about 5 hours on lectures each week.B. must join the students in the discussion sectionsC. prefer to use textbooks in their lecturesD. require the students to read beyond the textbooks3. A discussion section does NOT include___.A. working under the guidance of university professorsB. talking over what the students have read about the coursesC. discuss the problems related t o the students’ homeworkD. raising questions about what a professor has said in a lecture4. Why is it important to write down what the professor said in the lectures?A .because it is very importantB .because there is different information from the textbooksC .because the information in the lecture is very importantD. because they can get good informationBPassport Control(护照验证处)If you are arriving at London Heathrow Airport and are not transferring to another flight outside Britain or Northern Ireland, you must pass through Passport Control and Customs immediately after leaving your plane. There is a choice of two channels: Green and Red. If you have nothing to declare, go through the Green Channel. Erosion occurs if a largearea of land is cleared of trees and is then badly treated by the farmers. The rain and winds may gradually wash away, or blow away, much of the topsoil. When this happens, crops of wheat or corn become weaker and weaker until nothing grows well. If erosion continues, it will turn good land into a desert. In the past, when erosion appeared, farmers sometimes moved to a new place to farm. Sometimes they could not move, but continued to try to grow food in the unhealthy soil. This caused them to sink into poverty. Soon some people realized that there was little rich, fertile soil in the world, government began to try to stop erosion. One of the first experiments to stop erosion began in the United States in 1933. The experiment was carried out in the area of the Tennessee River. Floods and had farming in this area had ruined(毁坏)land that had once been rich. As a result, most of the people living around the Tennessee River were very poor. The government built big dams across the river and stored the water for use during the dry season when there was no rain. The government workers also helped farmers to fertilize their soil and to learn new farming methods which could stop erosion. At the beginning, the farmers were not interested. But soon, good healthy crops began to appear on the land where new methods where used. Ten years after the extremely prosperous, the great success of this experiment had led similar projects in the other parts of the world.13.The word ―erosion‖ in the first paragraph means _______.A.the clearing of trees B.excessive(极度)use of the landC.the destruction of crops D.gradual loss of topsoil14.The passage tells us that erosion is a problem which .A.first began in the United States in 1933B.occurs mainly in river areasC.affects many parts of the worldD.is becoming more and more serious15.In the second paragraph, ―to sink into poverty‖ means.A.to lose topsoil in erosionB.to become weaker and weaker until nothing grows wellC.to become very poorD.to turn into a desert16.The main purpose of this passage is to tell people .A.how erosion occursB.the importance of using new farming methodsC.something can be done to prevent erosionD.the serious outcomes(后果)of erosionEThe central government will pour billions of yuan into special projects to help meet the country’s energy-saving targets. Local officials are also about to come under increased pressure to toe the government line to meet the targets, otherwise their political futures could be in jeopardy.A top official from the National Development and Reform Commission reaffirmed China’s commitment to cutting energy use and emissions when making a report to the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress yesterday.―We’re facing a very vital situation to cut energy use,‖ Ma Kai, the NDRC minister said. ―If we don’t fasten our pace, it will be difficult to meet the targets this year.‖Ma said the central government would also issue compulsory energy consumption standards for 22 products such as steel, cement, caustic soda and thermal power by the end of the year. NDRC figures show that the country’s energy consumption per unit of gross domestic product (GDP) dropped 2.78 percent in the first six months from the same period a year earlier. However, the government has set the target of reducing energy consumption per unit of GDP by 20 percent between 2006 and 2010, about an annual fall of 4 percent. But it fell only 1.33 perc ent last year from 2005. In addition, official figures also show that SO2 emissions dropped 0.88 percent to 12.63 million tons in the first half of the year. The minister blamed some local officials for dragging the rest of the country down in not meeting the targets. He said the assessment of officials in many places still focused too much on their performance in economic growth, and many cities and counties still lacked concrete plans tocut energy consumption. Ma said we had paid too much to economic growth and serious consequences are revealing themselves.17.

ALast year, I lived in Chile for half a year. I lived with a Chilean family and had the responsibilities of any Chilean teenager. I had good days and bad days I didn’t understand.Chuquicamata, my host community, is a mining camp. When I arrived there, I was scared. It was so different from what I was used to. There were lots of dogs on the streets, and there was no downtown, few smoothly paved streets, and little to do for entertainment. Rain was not seen very often, earthquakes and windstorms were frequent.I had studied Spanish for two and a half years and was always one of the best students in my class. But in my first week in Chile I was only able to communicate and needed one person to whom I could explain my shock. I couldn’t speak the thoughts in my head and there were so many. Most exchange students experience this like me. Culture shock presents itself in everything from increased aggression (敌对心理) towards the people to lack of appetite. I was required to overcome all difficulties. As time passed, everything changed. I began to forget words in English and to dream in Spanish and love Chilean food. I got used to not depending on expensive things for fun. Fun in Chuquicamata was being with people. And I took math, physics, chemistry, biology, Spanish, art, and philosophy. But the sacrifices were nothing compared to the gain. I learned how to accept and to succeed in another culture. I now have a deeper understanding of both myself and others.1. According to the passage, which of the following statements about Chile is TRUE?A. its official language is Spanish and English.B. It is a developing country without foreign students.C. It seldom rains and natural disasters often happen.D. Most Chileans are not friendly to foreigners.BWorld Expo 2010 Shanghai China is to be staged in Shanghai from May1 to October 31, 2010. If you plan to visit the Shanghai Expo this summer, China Pavilion is a must-see area for you.China Pavilion, which is called Oriental Crown(东方之冠), is located at the center of the Expo site. Standing 63 meters tall, the China Pavilion takes the shape of an emperor’s crown, with the upper layers larger than the lower ones. Covering 160,000 square meters in floor space, the pavilion consists of a national hall and a regional hall. Construction on the China Pavilion began on December 18, 2007. The design of the China Pavilion was picked from a total of 344 designs put forward by Chinese from around the world. The pavilion possesses both traditional and modern features, which helps develop the theme of the 2010 Expo: “ Better City, Better Life”. For example, it is red in appearance, which contains the elements of traditional Chinese culture, and it is green indoors, with the use of energy-saving techniques. The Shanghai World Expo is expected to attract70 million visitors from across the globe. It is estimated that 400,000 people will visit the Expo and its 140 pavilions every day during the period, but the China Pavilion is only able to receive about one tenth of the total. How to accommodate so many people in the pavilion remains a tough task. Luckily, the China Pavilion is built as a permanent landmark.During the Expo, the main structure will be used for an exhibition based on the theme of “ Chinese wisdom in urban development” by explaining the values of harmony, nature and spirit. In the United States, over 160 million tons of garbage is produced every year. Ten percent is recycled, ten percent is burned, and the rest is put in landfills. But finding land for new landfills isbecoming more difficult.A city that has solved this problem in an unusual way is Machida in Tokyo. They have developed a totally new way of dealing with garbage. The key to the operation is that people should work together. Families must divide their garbage into six groups:1. garbage that can be easily burned, such as kitchen and garden trash2. garbage that does n’t burn easily, such as plastic tools and plastic toys3. products that are poisonous or that cause pollution, such as batteries4. bottles and glass containers that can be recycled5. metal containers that can be recycled6. large items, such as furniture and bicyclesThe items in Groups 1 to 5 are collected on different days. Large items are only collected upon request. Then the garbage is taken to a centre that looks like a clean new office building or hospital. Inside the centre, special equipment is used to sort and deal with garbage. Almost everything can be reused: garden or kitchen trash becomes fertilizer; garbage that can burn is burned to produce electricity; metal containers and bottles are recycled; and old furniture, clothing, and other useful items are cleaned, repaired, and resold cheaply or given away. The work provides employment for the disabled and gives them a chance to learn new skills.Nowadays, officials from cities around the world visit Machida to see whether they can use some of these ideas and techniques to solve their own garbage problems.9. Each year people in the U.S.A. have to find places to put in _______ million tons of garbage.A.160B.128C.16D.3210. George’s family has the following garbage: wooden chairs, empty tins and branches. Into which group should he put the garbage?A. Group 6, Group 5, Group 1.B. Group 1, Group 3, Group 2.C. Group 6, Group 5, Group 2.D. Group 6, Group 4, Group 1.11. From the text we know that ________ .A. those who are working at the garbage disposal centre are disabled persons.B. without people’s cooperation, the garbage disposal project would be a failure.C. the items in Group1 and Group6 are not collected on the same day.D. the garage is taken to a clean new office building for disposal.DIt is time for students to sell such things as chocolate bars and greeting cards to raise money for their school, class or club. It is inevitable that they will knock on your door and you will easily hand over your cash for overpriced items that you really do not want. That is okay, though, because there are many reasons why children should be allowed to raise money for their schools and clubs.Fundraising(募集资金)is a great way to help children learn social skills. It is not easy to go up to a complete stranger and ask him for his money. They have to nicely ask for help, show the interested buyer what they have to offer and explain how it will help them in school. If someone refuses to buy an item, that child has to take the failure in stride(不特别费力地), and that is a learning lesson as well.Students can learn how to deal with money by fundraising. Of course, it might seem safer for us to take charge of our chi ldren’s earnings from their fundraising before it is turned into the school. However, by making them keep track of it, count it, and make sure everyone pays the right amount, they are learning an important lesson. Dealing with money is important to know about when they are older.Fundraising helps improve their schools. It is the children’s school. They have to learn there and grow there. Why not let them help in making it a better place?Fundraising allows for more life experiences for the child. The raised money is used towards things like parties, trips, or for the music club to go to see a Broadway play. The children receive the rewards for their hard work at raising the money. Without fundraising, these field trips and special school memories would be missed. In a word, fundraising helps children a lot in many ways.12. The underlined word “inevitable” in the first paragraph means “_______”.A. 不可能的B. 不恰当的C. 不可避免的D. 不现实的13.One of the important indications that children are grown up is that __________.A. children can deal with moneyB. children learn to care for othersC. children make a date with friends of the other sex1—15 DCABC DBC BAB CACA。

ASinging are the pupils of the remote Beau-Roc primary school in Haiti. One of them plays a guitar made from an empty oil tin. Their headmistress, Emile Jean-Noel, is one of the few women school principals in the country. ks**5uOver 70 % of Haitian population live below the poverty line with inadequate food, water, schools, or housing. To reduce the hunger that prevents learning and to encourage parents to send their children to school, meals are provided by the World Food Programme.“We are so cut off we have many difficulties,” comments Emile, adding that finding chalk, school books and other materials is practically impossible. Emile tries to encourage those around her to make use of all available resources. Her efforts are bearing fruit. One of her successes was convincing local women to contribute to their children’s schooling and increase their own income by selling embroidery(刺绣) and other handicrafts. ks**5uRecent political instability has meant that the country has not invested in education for ten years. Enrolment(入学) is a mere 44 per cent and a little less than a half of those entering primary school finish it. Less than a third of these go on to secondary school. In rural areas it is not rare to find 17- and 18 year-olds in primary school. Beau-Roc has only 4 teachers for 260 pupils. Emile works constantly to improve her pupils’ environment. Under her direction, a local worker is now constructing a storehouse for the food delivered regularly by the World Food Programme. Not only is Emile’s salary too little, but she receives it irregularly. For her, transport is a real headache. She lives five kilometers away and has to take a privately-owned bus, costing more than she can afford.“The decision to be a rural teacher in Haiti should not be taken lightly”, Emile comments. “With all the sacrifices and risks it requires, only those who are really cut out for teaching should do it.” Nevertheless, Emile loves her job. “I alw ays feel at home with the children and, the parents understand what I’m doing.”1. What theme is presented in this passage?A. Devotion to education.B. Poverty and hardship.C. Politics and childrenD. Love and beauty ks**5u2. Which of the following is extremely difficult for Beau-Roc primary school?A. Teaching the women how to make embroidery and other handicrafts.B. Persuading local women to care about their children’s education.C. Encouraging those around her to use those available resources.D. Finding chalk, school books and other materials.3. In the last paragraph, “those who are really cut out for teaching” are those who are ________.A. dismissed from teachingB. unfamiliar with teachingC. qualified for teachingD. cautious about teachingBLabor force is defined as being the total number of people who are available to work and earn income. This definition includes everyone who is employed or seeking paid employment, so it includes employers and the self-employed. Labor is one of the country's resources which can be combined with other resources to produce the goods and services wanted by the community.Although the size of the workforce depends a great deal on the size of the total population, there are several other influences which also affect it. The age distribution (分布) of the total population has a very marked effect on the available workforce. If the population has a high proportion of very young people or of those too old to work, then the available workforce w ould be lower than if there were a balanced spread age distribution. If the population naturally grows rapidly, the number of births greatly exceeds (超出) the number of deaths then as a total population increases proportion of the workforce declines.Sometimes a population is described as aging which means that the birth rate is either falling or growing very slowly, and as people retire from the workforce there are insufficient numbers of young people entering it to replace those who are leaving it. In that situation the population istop-heavy with older people. So the percentage of the population in the workforce declines when there is either a rapid increase in births or a falling birth rate. ks**5uThe age distribution of the population has several important effects on the economy. If the population is aging and there is an increase in the number of people retiring without a corresponding increase in the number entering the workforce, this raises the problem of the ability of the economy to provide a reasonable level of social services to the retired group. If the aged are to be cared for in special homes, finance must be available for that purpose. If the size of the workforce is small relative to the total population, then the government tax revenue (税收) is relatively low and either the government has less money available to it or the workforce members have to be taxed more heavily.4.In the passage “labor force” is defined as ___________.A.people who are available to work and earn incomeB.self-employed people onlyC.people who are looking for an employment ks**5uD.employers who create job opportunities5.The conclusion which can be drawn from the second paragraph is that___________.A.a natural growth of population leads to a balanced workforceB.a large population does not necessarily mean a higher proportion of workforceC.the larger the population, the higher the proportion of the workforceD.the workforce will be lower, if the population has a balanced age distribution,6.When a population is said to be aging,___________.A.there are more people retiring than those entering the workforceB.the birth rate must be growingC.there should be an oversupply of workforceD.There are more people entering the workforce than those retiringC(1) Mr. Brown (the motorist)At about 9:20 p.m. on October 14th, I was driving along Market Road in the direction ofMidwick. I wanted to go to Sturham to collect my wife, who had been visiting some friends. I prepared to turn into Sturham Road, which was on my right. In the distance, I saw the lights of a car moving towards me but it was along way from me. I put out my hand to show that I was going to turn right. Then I started to turn slowly towards Sturham Road. Suddenly there was a loud noise on the passenger’s (near) side of the car. I stopped the car and got out. A motorcycle had hit my car. The motorcyclist had been thrown over the car. He was injured, so I ran to a shop to phone for help.(2) Mt. Smith (the injured motorcyclist)On the evening of October 14th, I was going home along Market Road towards Newtown. I was riding my motorcycle. I was going slowly because some of the streetlights were out and road was wet and slippery. Just before Sturham road, a car suddenly drove right across my path. The driver did not flash his lights to give a warning. I could not turn in time, so I hit the side of the car. WhenI woke up, I was lying in a hospital in Market Road.(3) Mr. Lee (another motorcyclist) ks**5uAt about 9:10 p.m. on October 14th, I left my home in Midwick. Ten minutes later I was riding my motorcycle along Market Road. I was going to Newton. There was a motorcycle about 40 meters in front of me. It was not going very quickly. The man on it was riding near the curb (路边) but I was near the center of the road. The motorcyclist in front of me tried to turn to his right but there was no time. He hit the car and was injured. There was no car going along in front of us o put by the road.7. Which of these pictures exactly shows the scene of the accident?X= the place where the motorcycle hit the car; N=Newtown;M= Midwick; S=Sturham (Note that cars and motorcycles always keep to the left in England.)8. Which of these statements about the accident is probably correct?A. Mr. Brown wrongly supposed that the lights of the two motorcycles were those of a car.B. the lights of the car moving towards Mr. Brown made him unable to see.C. Mr. Brown knocked down a motorcyclist on purpose.D. The accident was caused by the carelessness of the first motorcyclist.9. It seems probable from the statements that Mr. Brown ______ .A. gave no signal to show that he was turning rightB. did not five any signal until he was actually turningC. failed to give a proper signal at that timeD. flashed his light to show that he was going to turn10. We would expect to find that Mr. Brown’s car was damaged on its ______ side.A. frontB. leftC. rightD. driver’sDAs any homemaker who has tried to keep order at the dinner table knows, there is far more to a family meal than food. Sociologist Michael Lewis has been studying 50 families to find out just how much more. ks**5uLewis and his co-workers carried out their study by videotaping the families while they ate M M MDordinary meals in their own homes. They found that parents with small families talk actively with each other and their children. But as the number of children gets larger, conversation gives way to the parents’ efforts t o control the loud noise they make. That can have an important effect on the children. “In general the more question-asking the parents do, the higher the children’s IQ scores,” Lewis says. “And the more children there are, the less question-asking there i s.”The study also provides an explanation for why middle children often seem to have a harder time in life than their siblings(兄弟姐妹). Lewis found that in families with three or four children, dinner conversation is likely to center on the oldest child, who has the most to talk about, and the youngest, who needs the most attention. “Middle children are invisible.” Says Lewis. “When you see someone get up from the table and walk around during dinner, chances are it’s the middle child.” There is, however, one thing that stops all conversation and prevents anyone from having attention: “When the TV is on,” Lewis says, “dinner is a non-event.”11. The writer’s purpose in writing the text is to ______ .A. show the relationship between parents and childrenB. teach parents ways to keep order at the dinner tableC. report on the findings of a studyD. give information about family problems12. By saying “Middle children are invisible” in paragrap h 3, Lewis means that middle children______ .A. have to help their parents to serve dinnerB. get the least attention from the familyC. are often kept away from the dinner tableD. find it hard to keep up with other children13. Parents with large families ask fewer questions at dinner because ______ .A. they are busy serving food to their childrenB. they are busy keeping order at the dinner tableC. they have to pay more attention to younger childrenD. they are tired out having prepared food for the whole family14. Lewis research provides an answer to the question ______ .A. Why TV is important in family ks**5uB. why parents should keep good orderC. why children in small families seem to be quietD. why middle children seem to have more difficulties in life15. Which of the following statements would the writer agree to?A. It is important to have the right food for children.B. It is a good idea to have the TV on during dinner.C. Parents should talk to each of their children frequently.D. Elder children should help the younger ones at dinner.1—15 ADC ABAD CACB CBBDC。

语鹅市安置阳光实验学校滚动题组23 阅读理解+阅读表达+书面表达(时间:60分钟总分:80分分数: )滚动题组第28页Ⅰ.阅读理解A(2019·天津卷)How does an ecosystem(生态系统) work? What makes the populations of different species the way they are?Why are there so many flies and so few wolves? To find an answer, scientists have built mathematical models of food webs, noting who eats whom and how much each one eats. With such models, scientists have found out some key principles operating in food webs. Most food webs, for instance, consist of many weak links rather than a few strong ones. When a predator(掠食动物) always eats huge numbers of a single prey(猎物),the two species are strongly linked;when a predator lives on various species, they are weakly linked.Food webs may be dominated by many weak links because that arrangement is more stable over the long term.If a predator can eat several species,it can survive the extinction(灭绝) of one of them. And if a predator can move on to another species that is easier to find when a prey species becomes rare, the switch allows the original prey to recover. The weak links may thus keep species from driving one another to extinction.Mathematical models have also revealed that food webs may be unstable, where small changes of top predators can lead to big effects throughout entire ecosystems. In the 1960s,scientists proposed that predators at the top of a food web had a surprising amount of control over the size of populations of other species—including species they did not directly attack. And unplanned human activities have proved the idea of top-down control by top predators to be true.In the ocean,we fished for top predators such as cod on an industrial scale, while on land,we killed off large predators such as wolves. These actions have greatly affected the ecological balance.Scientists have built an early-warning system based on mathematical models.Ideally, the system would tell us when to adapt human activities that are pushing an ecosystem toward a breakdown or would even allow us to pull an ecosystem back from the borderline.Prevention iskey, scientists say, because once ecosystems pass their tipping point(临界点),it is remarkably difficult for them to return.【语篇解读】本文是一篇说明文。

Go to buy yourself a ticket to Sweeney Todd tomorrow. It'll change your life,’” Elder said. Elder never got the man's name—just $200 and a photo.Elder had never seen Sweeney Todd, so he bought “a great seat”. Starring in that production was the legendary Patti LuPone. “That did not seem real. Patti LuPone... she seemed like a person you read about in a book or heard about somewhere, but not someone you saw perform,” Elder said.He th en tried his best to earn a place on the stage. LuPone is now his costar in the hit musical Company—a turning point of fate that goes back to the stranger who gave him the means to watch one of Broadway's biggest productions. “It takes that kind of generosity to show you what generosity can be, to turn around and do it again,” Elder said.Giving back is now a big part of his life. Once a month, he and his 4yearold son pay for a stranger's meal at their local diner. Recently, he has started giving away free tickets to his show through social media. After every performance, Elder takes a picture with the strangers he buys tickets for and hangs the photos in his dressing room. “I hope that it awakens something in them, just like it did in me,” he said. “What I hope happens is that these people are shown some sort of sincere kindness from a stranger and hopefully in turn go out and do something kind for somebody who they don't know.”4.How did Elder feel when he saw Patti LuPone perform?A.Moved and grateful.B.Inspired but worried.C.Curious but doubtful.D.Surprised and excited.5.What did Elder do after seeing Sweeney Todd?A.He took Patti LuPone as his teacher.B.He tried to contact the stranger.C.He trained hard to become an actor.D.He created Company with Patti LuPone.6.Why does Elder give free tickets to those strangers?A.To get personal popularity.B.To take photos with them.C.To inspire them to do good deeds.D.To help them know more about his show.7.What is the best title for the text?A.An Act of Kindness Goes FarB.Hard Work Always Pays OffC.Luck Falls in an Unexpected WayD.A Good Play Can Change Your LifeCSherry Gao is pouring coffee made from singleorigin beans, hoping that her Mandarin Coffee Stand in the city of Pasadenawill, California introduces you to your new favorite coffee and turns your preconceptions about Chinese coffee beans upside down.Much of the Western world imports its coffee from Africa and South America. But Gao hopes that throwing light on Yunnansourced coffee could expose customers to the coffeeproducing region and help to break down prejudice against the beans, which for decades, until only a few years ago, were primarily used for instant products.“We wanted to highlight Chinese coffee because a lot of people nev er had Chinese coffee before,” Gao said. “Some have the mindset that it's bad or it's cheap, but that's not the case anymore. It's been changing so much over the last decade.”Recent experimentation with processing, such as the addition of fruit or sugarcane molasses during the production, is leading Yunnan's coffee to more flavorful results. “Every time a new product comes in, it tastes better than the last one,” Gao said.Farmers in China have grown tea for more than 3,000 years, but coffee has been grown there for only about a century in small quantities, with an uptick in the 1980s with government involvement. And the turn of the century and the 2010s saw a sharp growth with international corporations investing in the region's crops, initially for use in instant coffee. But in the last 10 to 15 years, tastes and demand for specialty and highgrade coffees emerged, especially from local growers and shops. The domestic demand for Chinagrown coffee has risen so dramatically that Gao says it's now much more expensive. To further connect with the community, Gao hopes to one day host classes for interactive howto events. After all, she says, the Yunnan coffee tastes excellent when made in one's own kitchen with a pourover system and she hopes it's only a matter of time before home specialty coffee enthusiasts catch on too.8.What's a misunderstanding of Chinese coffee beans?A.They are of poor quality.B.They have limited producing areas.C.They have a mild taste.D.They are used for flavored coffee.9.Wha t does the underlined word “uptick” in Paragraph 5 mean?A.Output. But the new strip uses a passive system to generate electricity from sweat in your fingertips, even if you are sleeping or sitting completely still. This is because the finger tips are the sweatiest part of the body. So, thanks to a smart sponge material, this can be collected and processed by conductors. The energy harvester produced small amounts of electricity when the wearer presses down or starts to sweat, or from light finger tapping. It does this by converting activities like typing, texting, or playing the piano into extra charge.Finger tips have one of the highest concentrations of sweat grands in the body, with coach finger producing between 100 and 1,000 times more sweat than most other areas, according to the researchers.Cofirst author doctoral student Mr. Bin said: “The reason why we feel sweatier on other parts of the body is that those spots are not well ventilated (通风的). By contrast, the finger tips are always exposed to air, so the sweat evaporated as it comes out. So rather than letting it evaporate, we use our device to collect this sweat, and it can generate a significant amount of energy.”The device is equipped with electrical conductors or electrode (电极) made from a carbon foam, which absorbs any finger sweat. Enzyme (酶) on the electrode then cause a chemical sweat molecule to generate electricity. The device only stores up a little bit power at the moment, and would take about three weeks of constant wear to power a smart phone, but the researchers hope to increase capacity in future.12.How is the new device different from other wearables?A.It is costeffective.B.It is harmless to skin.C.It required no exercise.D.It produced electricity.13.What does the underlined word “evaporate” in Paragraph 5 mean?A.Changes into a gas.B.Freezes in the air.C.Drops to the ground.D.Becomes bigger in amount.14.What is the disadvantage of the device?A.It is extremely small in size.B.It is very difficult to operate.C.It has a very limited power capacity.D.It relies much on temperature changes.15.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?A.Sweats FingertipsB.Power from FingertipsC.An Electrical ConductorD.A Rechargeable Device[答题区]阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。
