The way people hold to the belief that a fun - filled, pain free life equals happiness actually reduces their chances of ever attaining real happiness. If fun and pleasure are equal to happiness then pain must be equal to unhappiness. But in fact, the opposite is true: more often than not things that lead to happiness involve some pain.As a result, many people avoid the very attempts that are the source of true happiness. They fear the pain inevitably brought by such things as marriage, raising children, professional achievement, religious commitment (预担的义务), self - improvement.Ask a bachelor(单身汉)why he resists marriage even though he finds dating to be less and less satisfying. If he is honest he will tell you that he is afraid of making a commitment. For commitment is in fact quite painful. The single life is filled with fun, adventure, excitement. Marriage has such moments, but they are not its most distinguishing features.Couples with infant children are lucky to get a whole night’s sleep or a three - day vacation. I don’t know any paren t who would choose the word fun to describe raising children. But couples who decide not to have children never know the joys of watching a child grow up or of playing with a grandchilD.Understanding and accepting that true happiness has nothing to do with fun is one of the most liberating realizations. It liberates time: now we can devote more hours to activities that can genuinely increase our happiness. It liberates money: buying that new car or those fancy clothes that will do nothing to increase our happiness now seems pointless. And it liberates us from envy: we now understand that all those who are always having so much fun actually may not be happy at all. 31.According to the author, a bachelor resists marriage chiefly because ________ .A. he is reluctant to take on family responsiblilitiesB. he believes that life will be more cheerful if he remains singleC. he finds more fun in dating than in marriageD. he fears it will put an end to all his fun adventure and excitement32.Raising c hildren, in the author’s opinion is ________ .A. a moral dutyB. a thankless jobC. a rewarding taskD. a source of inevitable pain33.From the last paragraph, we learn that envy sometimes stems from ________ .A. hatredB. misunderstandingC. prejudiceD. ignorance34.To understand what true happiness is one must ________ .A. have as much fun as possible during one’s lifetimeB. make every effort to liberate oneself from painC. put up with pain under all circumstancesD. be able to distinguish happiness from fun35.What is the author trying to tell us?A. Happiness often goes hand in hand with pain.B. One must know how to attain happiness.C. It is important to make commitments.D. It is pain that leads to happiness.B. Increasingly , over the past ten years, people ---especially young people --- have become aware of the need to change their eating habits, because much of the food they eat, particularly processed foods, is not good for the health. Consequently, there has been a growing interest in natural foods: foods which do not contain chemical additives and which have not been affected by chemical fertilizers widely used in farming today.Natural foods, for example, are vegetables, fruit and grain which have been grown in soil that is rich in organic matter. In simple terms, this means that the soil has been nourished by unused vegetable matter, which provides it with essential vitamins and minerals. This in itself is a natural process compared with the use of chemicals and fertilizers, the main purpose of which is to increase the amount but not the quality of foods grown in commercial farming areas.Natural foods also include animals which have been allowed to feed and move freely in healthy pastures. Compare this with what happens in the mass production of poultry: there are battery farms, for example, where thousands of chickens live crowded together in one building and are fed on food which is little better than rubbish. Chickens kept in this way are not only tasteless as food; they also produce eggs which lack important vitamins. There are other aspects of healthy eating which are now receiving increasing attention from experts on diet. Take, for example, the question of sugar. This is actually a nonessential food! Although a natural alternative, such as honey, can be used to sweeten food it this necessary, we can in fact do without it. It is not that sugar is harmful in itself. But it does seem to be additive: the quantity we use has grown steadily over the last centuries and in Britain today each person consumes an average of 200 pounds a year! Yet all it does is provide us with energy, in the form of calories. There are no vitamins in it, no minerals and no fiber. It is significant that nowadays fiber is considered to be an important part of a healthy diet. In white bread, for example, the fiber has been removeD. But it is present in unrefined flour and of course in vegetables. It is interesting to note that in countries where the national diet contains large quantities of unrefined flour and vegetables, certain diseases are comparatively rare. Hence the emphasis is placed on the eating of whole meal bread and more vegetables by modern experts on “healthy eating”.36.Which statement best expresses the main idea of this article?A. People should eat any food to keep themselves healthy and strong.B. People should eat natural foods to keep themselves healthy and strong.C. People should eat fiber foods to keep themselves healthy and strong.D. People should eat vegetables to keep themselves healthy and strong.37.“Particularly processed foods” means ___________.A. foods which are particularly processed by adding chemical additivesB. foods which are particularly made by commercial farmsC. foods which are specially produced by commercial factoriesD. foods which are not specially made by adding anything38.Natural foods means _________.A. foods good for healthB. foods not good for healthC. foods such as vegetables, fruit and grain from rich organic matters soilD. crops from rich organic matters soil and meats of animals from health pastures39. There are no vitamins, no minerals and no fibers in _________.A. natural foodsB. sugarC. animal meatsD. fruit40. “Yet all it does is provide us with energy, in the form of calories” It means _____.A. processed food provides us with energyB. natural food furnishes us with vitamins and mineralsC. sugar gives us enough energy in the form of caloriesD. fiber helps us to digest foodC. Disraeli was as sparkling a letter-writer as he was a novelist. His letters show that his capacity to observed was matched only by his ability to describe, and they are excited by his over-developed sense of self-dramatization as well as by his enduring sense of the greatness of his own destiny. He skims through these pages like some gorgeous bird of paradise, spreading his multi-colored feathers and never pausing long enough to become boring. As early as 1830, when only 26, he is found advising Benjamin Austin to carefully conserve his letters for posterity. Fortunately Austin and others followed his advicA. As a result over 10,000 letters in his own hand have survived, quite apart from dictated letters and other notes and documents. Disraeli rarely kept a diary, and poured his thoughts, desires and reflections into his correspondencA.What treasures there lie in store! We leave him 1837 with his longed-for election to Parliament, but ahead come into view the high peaks of his career with the twin mountains of his two premierships and his friendship with the Queen. Lord Esher maintained that the letters between Disraeli and Queen Victoria had largely been destroyed, but this was not so. A new, bright and searching light will eventually shine on that extraordinary political and romantic friendship.41. This passage appears to be written by _______.A a friend of Disraeli'sB a contemporary of Disraeli'sC a literary criticD an autobiographer42. ...his capacity to observe was matched only by his ability to describA... meansA he was as accomplished an observer as he was a descriptive writerB his capacity to observe and his ability to describe were unrivalledC he was capable of adapting descriptions to fit his observationsD his observations and descriptions reflected his own personal ambitions43. Even as a young man Disraeli realized that one day his letters would be _______.A antiquatedB well-connectedC destroyedD widely-read45. Disraeli's two premierships and his friendship with the Queen are described as being _______.A obstacles to surmountB unsurmountable obstaclesC pinnacles of successD impossible challengesD. Today’s kids absorb lots of messages, values and attitudes from the media and from friends. Advertisements whet their appetite for many things they don’t need. What they do need is an understanding of the value of the dollar. How do kids learn to be economically savvy (机智的) ? Most schools do not teach the financial facts of life; it’s up to parents to help kids grow into responsible and skillful money earners, savers and spenders. To learn about money, kids first need to have some. Early on, parents often hand out money on an as-needed basis. But experts say paying a regular allowance is the best way to teach children the meaning of money, how to use it and how to plan. Some call it “learning capital”.A child is ready for an allowance around age five or six, when he becomes aware of the relationship between money and shopping, can differentiate coins, can add and subtract, has spending opportunities and asks parents to buy him things. How much allowance? Some experts recommend giving a dollar for each year of age, but Sharon Danes, a profe ssor at the University of Minnesota disagrees: “I think $ 5 a week is too much for afive-year-old, and $15 is probably not enough for a 15-year-old.” What’s right for the child depends on three factors: the child’s level of development, what the parents c an afford, and what the parents expect him to pay for.Whatever the amount, kids will soon feel they need more. But Sharon Danes insists that children don’t need an automatic raise each year. “There’s no lesson to be learned when children expect an increas e just because they’re a year older,” she says. “The reason for getting a greater part of the family-income pie is so they can learn more about balancing demands and resources.”46. In Para. 1, “whet their appetite” most probably means ____________.A) make them wish for more B) spoil their appetiteC) sharpen their sensation D) stimulate their consuming power47. What is the best way for children to learn to be economically savvy?A) Parents don’t give them money until they really nee d it.B) Children are taught the financial facts of life at school.C) Parents regularly give them a certain amount of money.D) Parents help children become skillful money earners.48. At the age of five or six, children are capable of all the following EXCEPT _____.A) identifying the face value of moneyB) solving simple arithmetic problemsC) knowing that with money they can get things from storesD) going shopping themselves49. What is Professor Sharon Danes’ attitude toward the p roposal of giving children a dollar for each year of age?A) She believes this will surely encourage children to ask for more.B) She doubts whether there is such thing as “right amount” for parents to give to their children.C) She thinks it is unnecessary to increase the amount each year.D) She insists that children can only get money when they study well.50. Which of the following is closest in meaning to the last sentence of the passage?A) The purpose of giving children money is to let them know more about how to use money and how to plan.B) If they want to get more from the family income, they must have enough knowledge of family economy.C) Children can get more money on the condition that they are able to balance demands and resources.D) To give children more money is to make them understand the importance of balancing demands and resources.E.Faces, like fingerprints, are unique. Did you ever wonder how it is possible for us to recognize people? Even a skilled writer probably could not describe all the features that make one face different from another. Yet a very young child-or even an animal, such as a pigeon-can learn to recognize faces, we all take this ability for granted. We also tell people apart by how they behav e. When we talk about someone’s personality, we mean the ways in which he or she acts, speaks, thinks and feels that make that individual different from other. Like the human face, human personality is very complex. But describing someone’s personality in words is somewhat easier than describing his face. If you were asked to describe what a “nice face” looked like, you probably would have a difficult time doing so.But if you were asked to describe a “nice person”, you might begin to think about someone wh o was kind, considerate, friendly, warm, and so forth. There are many words to describe how a person thinks, feels and acts. Fordin Allport, an American psychologist, found nearly 18,000 English words charactering differences in people’s behavior. And many of us use this information as a basis for describing, or typing, his personality. Bookworms, conservatives, military types-people are described with such terms.People have always tried to “type” each other. Actors in early Greek drama wore masks to show the audience whether they played the villains or the hero’s role. In fact, the words “person” and “personality” come from the Latin persona, meaning “mask”. Today most television and movie actors do not wear masks. But we easily tell the “good guys” from the “bad guys” because the two types differ in appearance as well as in actions.51. By using the simile (直喻) of fingerprints, the author tells us that _____.A) people differ from each other in facial featuresB) people have difficulty in describing the features of fingerprintsC) people have different personalitiesD) people can learn to recognize faces52. According to this passage, some animals have the gift of _____.A) typing each otherB) telling people apart by how they behaveC) recognizing human facesD) telling good people from bad people53. Who most probably knows best hw to describe people’s personality?A) Psychologists. B) The modern TV audience.C) The ancient Greek audience D) The movie star.54. 151大英I期末模拟试卷

英语第一册期末考试模拟试卷Part I Reading Comprehension (Scanning and Matching) (10%)Directions:In this part, you are going to read a passage with ten statements attached to it. Each statement contains information given in one of the paragraphs represented by a letter respectively. Identify the paragraph from which the information is derived. You may choose a paragraph more than once. Match the number of each statement with the corresponding letter. How to Make Attractive and Effective PowerPoint PresentationsA) Microsoft PowerPoint has dramatically changed the way in which academic and businesspresentations are made. This article outlines few tips on making more effective and attractive PowerPoint presentations. The TextB) Keep the wording clear and simple. Use active, visual language. Cut unnecessary words—a good rule of thumb is to cut paragraphs down to sentences, sentences into phrases, andphrases into key words. Limit the number of words and lines per slide. Try the Rule of Five-five words per line, five lines per slide. If too much text appears on one slide, use the AutoFit feature to split it between two slides. Click within the placeholder to display the AutoFit Options button (its symbol is two horizontal lines with arrows above and below), then click on the button and choose Split Text between Two Slides from the submenu.C) Font size for titles should be at least 36 to 40, while the text body should not be smaller than24. Use only two font styles per slide—one for the title and the other for the text. Choose twofonts that visually contrast with each other. Garamond Medium Condensed and Impact are good for titles, while Garamond or Tempus Sans can be used for the text body.D) Embed the fonts in your presentation, if you are not sure whether the fonts used in thepresentation are present in the computer that will be used for the presentation. To embed the fonts: (1) On the File menu, click Save As. (2) On the toolbar, click Tools, click Save Options, select the Embed TrueType Fonts check box, and then select Embed characters in use only.E) Use colors sparingly; two to three at most. You may use one color for all the titles and anotherfor the text body. Be consistent from slide to slide. Choose a font color that contrasts well with the background.F) Capitalizing the first letter of each word is good for the title of slides and suggests a more formalsituation than having just the first letter of the first word capitalized. In bullet point lines, capitalize the first word and no other words unless they normally appear capped. Upper and lower case lettering is more readable than all capital letters. Moreover, current styles indicate that using all capital letters means you are shouting. If you have text that is in the wrong case, select the text, and then click Shift+F3 until it changes to the case style that you like. Clicking Shift+F3 toggles the text case between ALL CAPS, lower case, and Initial Capital styles.G) Use bold or italic typeface for emphasis. Avoid underlining, it clutters up the present ation.Don’tcenter bulleted lists or text. It is confusing to read. Left align unless you have a good reason not to. Run “spell check”on your show when finished. The BackgroundH) Keep the background consistent. Simple, light textured backgrounds work well. Complicatedtextures make the content hard to read. If you are planning to use many clips in your slides, select a white background. If the venue of your presentation is not adequately light-proof, selecta dark-colored background and use any light colo r for text. Minimize the use of “bells andwhistles”such as sound effects, “flying words” and multiple transitions. Don’t use red in any fonts or backgrounds. It is an emotionally overwhelming color that is difficult to see and read. The ClipsI) Animations are best used subtly; too much flash and motion can distract and annoy viewers. Donot rely too heavily on those images that were originally loaded on your computer with the rest of Office. You can easily find appropriate clips on any topic through Google Images. While searching for images, do not use long search phrases as is usually done while searching the web-use specific words.J) When importing pictures, make sure that they are smaller than two megabytes and are in a .jpg format. Larger files can slow down your show. Keep graphs, charts and diagrams simple, if possible. Use bar graphs and pie charts instead of tables of data. The audience can then immediately pick up the relationships. The PresentationK) If you want your presentation to directly open in the slide show view, save it as a slide show file using the following steps. Open the presentation you want to save as a slide show. On the File menu, click Save As. In the Save as type list, click PowerPoint Show. Your slide show file will be saved with a ppt file extension. When you double-click on this file, it will automatically start your presentation in slide show view. When you’re done, PowerPoint automatically closes and you return to the desktop. If you want to edit the slide show file, you can always open it from PowerPoint by clicking Open on the File menu.L) Look at the audience, not at the slides, whenever possible. If using a laser pointer, don’t move it too fast. For example, if circling a number on the slide, do it slowly. Never point the laser at the audience. Black out the screen (use “B” on the keyboard) after the point has been made, to put the focus on you. Press the key again to continue your presentation.M) You can use the shortcut command [Ctrl]P to access the Pen tool during a slide show. Click with your mouse and drag to use the Pen tool to draw during your slide show. To erase everything you’ve drawn, press the E key. To turn off the Pen tool, press [Esc] once.MiscellaneousN) Master Slide Set-Up: The “master slide” will allow you to make changes that are reflected on every slide in your presentation. You can change fonts, colors, backgrounds, headers, and footers at the “master slide” level. First, go to the “View” menu. Pull down the “Master” menu.Select the “slide master” menu. You may now make changes at this level that meet your presentation needs.1. In order to meet your presentation needs, you can make changes at the “slide master” level.2. Pressing the E key can help you to erase everything you've drawn.3. In each slide, the font styles for the title and the text should contrast with each other.4. When making the PowerPoint, the wording of the text should not be complicated.5. The ways in which academic and business presentations are made have been changed byMicrosoft PowerPoint.6. When importing pictures, make sure that they are smaller than two megabytes.7. Sound effects should be used as less frequently as possible.8. Centering bulleted lists or text can not help to read.9. We can infer from the passage that the White House was first built ___________.A) on a low and damp site B) among trees and flowersC) on a small island D) on a small hillPassage ThreeQuestions 31 to 35 are based on the following passageI don't ever want to talk about being a woman scientist again. There was a time in my life when people asked constantly for stories about what it's like to work in a field dominated by men. I was never very good at telling those stories because truthfully I never found them interesting. What I do find interesting is the origin of the universe, the shape of space-time and the nature of black holes. At 19, when I began studying astrophysics, it did not bother me in the least to be the only woman in the classroom. But while earning my Ph.D. at MIT and then as a post-doctor doing space research, the issue started to bother me. My every achievement--jobs, research papers, awards--was viewed through the lens of gender politics. So were my failures. Sometimes, when I was pushed into an argument on left brain versus right brain, or nature versus nurture (培育), I would instantly fight fiercely on my behalf and all womankind. Then one day a few years ago, out of my mouth came a sentence that would eventually become my reply to any and all provocations: I don't talk about that anymore. It took me 10 years to get back the confidence I had at 19 and to realize that I didn't want to deal with gender issues. Why should curing sexism be yet another terrible burden on every female scientist? After all, I don't study sociology or political theory.Today I research and teach at Barnard, a women's college in New York City. Recently, someone asked me how many of the 45 students in my class were women. You cannot imagine my satisfaction at being able to answer: 45. I know some of my students worry how they will manage their scientific research and a desire for children. And I don't dismiss those concerns. Still, I don't tell them "war" stories. Instead, I have given them this: the visual of their physics professor heavily pregnant doing physics experiments. And in turn they have given me the image of 45 women driven by a love of science. And that's a sight worth talking about.31. Why doesn't the author want to talk about being a woman scientist again?A) She feels unhappy working in male-dominated fields.B) She is fed up with the issue of gender discrimination.C) She is not good at telling stories of the kind.D) She finds space research more important.32. From Paragraph 2, we can infer that people would attribute the author's failures to ____A) the very fact that she is a womanB) her over-confidence as a female astrophysicistC) her involvement in gender politicsD) the burden she bears in a male-dominated society33. What did the author constantly fight against while doing her Ph.D. and post-doctoral research?A) Lack of confidence in succeeding in space science.B) Unfair accusations from both inside and outside her circle.C) People's stereotyped attitude towards female scientists.D) Widespread misconceptions about nature and nurture.34. Why does the author feel great satisfaction when talking about her class?A) Female students no longer have to bother about gender issues.B) Her students' performance has brought back her confidence.C) Her female students can do just as well as male students.D) More female students are pursuing science than before.35. What does the image the author presents to her students suggest?A) Women students needn't have the concerns of her generation.B) Women have more barriers on their way to academic success.C) Women can balance a career in science and having a family.D) Women now have fewer problems pursuing a science career.Part III Translation (35%)Directions: translate the following sentences.36. 据说比尔因一再违反公司的安全规章而被解雇。

Reading Comprehension (20 points)Directions: In this part, there are two passages. Read the following passages carefully and choose the best answer from the four choices marked A, B, C and D. (20 points: 10×2 points)Passage OneInternet use appears to cause a drop in psychological health, according to research at Carnegie Mellon University. Even people who spent just a few hours a week on the Internet experienced more bad feelings and loneliness than those who was online less frequently, the two-year study showed. Researchers are puzzling over the results, which were completely contrary to their expectations. They expected that the Net would prove socially healthier than television, since the Net allows users to choose their information and to communicate with others. The fact that Internet use reduces time available for family and friends may account for the drop in psychological health, researchers hypothesized (推测). Faceless, bodiless virtual communication may be less psychologically satisfying than actual conversation, and the relationships formed through it may be shallower. Another possibility is that exposure to the wider world through the Net makes users less satisfied with their lives.“But it’s important to remember this is not about the technology, it’s about how it is used,”says psychologist Christine Riley of Intel, one of the study' s sponsors (发起人). “It really points to the need for considering social factors in terms of how you design applications and services for technology.”16. What's the finding of the research undertaken at Carnegie Mellon University?A. People spend more time on the Internet now.B. People spend less time with their families and friends now.C. The Net proves socially healthier than television.D. Internet use may cause a drop in psychological health.17. What had the researchers expected before the research?A. The Net may account for the drop in psychological health.B. Internet use may improve social health.C. Internet use has nothing to do with social health.D. Spending much time on the Internet makes people feel bad and lonely.18. Which is NOT true according to the passage?A. The Net allows users to choose their information and to communicate with others.B. Internet communication may be less psychologically satisfying than actual conversation.C. Undeveloped Internet technology causes the drop in psychological health.D. The wider world through the Net makes users less satisfied with their lives.19. What does Christine Riley, the psychologist, suggest?A. It's necessary to take social factors into account in designing applications and services fortechnology.B. It's important to tell the users how to design and apply the technology.C. Compared with social factors, the technology itself has more influence on the Internet users.D. No social factors should be considered in applications and services for technology.20. Which of the following would be the most appropriate title for the passage?A. How to Use the InternetB. Disadvantages of the InternetC. Social Factors and the InternetD. Internet May Cause Bad FeelingsPassage TwoThe $11 billion self-help industry is built on the idea that you should turn negative thoughts like "I never do anything right" into positive ones like "I can succeed." But was positive thinking advocate Norman Vincent Peale right? Is there power in positive thinking?Researchers in Canada just published a study in the journal Psychological Science that says trying to get people to think more positively can actually have the opposite effect: it can simply highlight how unhappy they are.The study's authors, Joanne Wood and John Lee of the University of Waterloo and Elaine Perunovic of the University of New Brunswick, begin by citing older research showing that when people get feedback which they believe is overly positive, they actually feel worse, not better. If you tell your dim friend that he has the potential of an Einstein, you're just underlining his faults. In one 1990s experiment, a team including psychologist Joel Cooper of Princeton asked participants to write essays opposing funding for the disabled. When the essayists were later praised for their sympathy, they felt even worse about what they had written. In this experiment, Wood, Lee and Perunovic measured 68 students' self-esteem. The participants were then asked to write down their thoughts and feelings for four minutes. Every 15 seconds, one group of students heard a bell. When it rang, they were supposed to tell themselves, "I am lovable."Those with low self-esteem didn't feel better after the forced self-affirmation. In fact, their moods turned significantly darker than those of members of the control group, who weren't urged to think positive thoughts. The paper provides support for newer forms of psychotherapy that urge people to accept their negative thoughts and feelings rather than fight them. In the fighting, we not only often fail but can make things worse. Meditation (静思) techniques, in contrast, can teach people to put their shortcomings into a larger, more realistic perspective. Call it the power of negative thinking.21. What do we learn from the first paragraph about the self-help industry?A. It is a highly profitable industry.B. As I walked around the deck, I’d frequently stop and write in my journal. Being the only non-Asian person on the boat, this drew quite a few curious looks, and finally a small group of people gathered around me and watched me write as if AI were a sidewalk artist drawing portraits of passersby. I could tell they were enjoying watching me, so after I paused and smiled at them, I went on with my writing, mainly for their entertainment. But soon I stopped, and using my tiny amount of Chinese and their tiny amount of English, we introduced ourselves and told where we were from and where we were going. They took pictures of me with their friends and families, and I took pictures of them in return. When we arrived in Qingdao, I parted with my deck friends on the best terms and with a bit of advice about what to see and do in Qingdao. On another trip, after boarding a plane from Xiamen to Beijing, I discovered I’d lost my passport. Without it, I was stuck between two cities, neither of which was my home base.I tried to hide my panic, but I could see that the flight staff and the other passengers on the plane could tell. And maybe that was for the best because, to my amazement, they held up the flight and radioed the airport staff, who searched the airport while the flight staff searched the runway and the shuttle bubs. Meanwhile, many of the passengers had begun searching the cabin. I didn’t hear a single complaining voice; everyone was willing to help. Finally a police officer entered the plane and began to collect information from me. I was about to despair of finding my passport when suddenly a woman waved the small blue book in the air –she’d found it! The whole plane burst into smiles and applause. I was very relieved and grateful for the kindness I’d experienced from so many people who’d treated me like a friend in need and not just as a foreigner.1 The author felt uncomfortable as Chinese people were too open and curious abouthim. ( F )2 While he was drawing portraits of passers-by, a group of people gathered aroundhim. ( F )3 He didn't stop writing in his journal as people around him enjoyed watching him.( F )4 The group of people spoke a little English but he couldn't speak any Chinese. ( F )5 The author left his address and telephone number to his deck friends. ( F )Passage 2Are the following statements true or false according to the passage? Write T/F accordingly.Begin Each Day with a Fresh Plan of AttackYou’d hoped that when you got in this morning, it would be gone. But that towering pile of work – everything from mail to memos – is right where you left it. The boss pops in to ask if you can spare a few minutes. You’re drowning in a pile of papers, and she wants to know if you can spare a few minutes. All she’s going to do is to give you more work anyway. This job is impossible! Is that what your work life feels like day after day – an endless number of little tasks and big headaches? Preplan your day and this will help you feel good about yourself and your job! It’s 9:00 a.m., and you’re sitting at your desk staring at a long report, performance reviews, three memos to answer and a press release. It has all got to be done, but you can’t even decide where to begin. If only somebody could organize this mess. Well, somebody can – you!In fact your mistake is trying to face this first thing in the morning without a plan of action and this is enough to ruin your whole day – maybe even a week. Instead, take the last thirty minutes of each day to examine what looms ahead the next. Write down everything you want to finish. Now, divide projects into three smaller lists. You A-list items are of the highest priority. Gather phone numbers and files you need so that you won’t waste valuable time. Then draw up the less immediate B list. If talks are brief and easily done, you may get to some of these items the next day, but don’t let them draw too much attention. Everything else should be C-listed.Each list is flexible and subject to review at the end of the day, of course. Some items that were less important on Monday will move to Tuesday. Possibly, you can also slide in a less important task that’s fun to do. Either way, it’s important to begin each day with a fresh plan of attack, one that will get you past your morning panic and right down to work.1 Although you are quite busy, your boss still might give you more work. ( T )2 You should divide your projects into three smaller lists in the morning. ( F )3 Your C-list items are of least priority relatively. ( T )4 You should finish B-list items on the second day of the week. ( F)5 You should not put off any of the A-list items till the next day. ( T )Passage 3Choose the best choice according to the passage.Bill Javis took over our village news agency at a time of life when most of us only want to relax. He had been a long-serving sailor, and all his life had done everything by the clock.Every day he opened his shop at six a.m. to catch the early trade; the papers arrived on his door-step before that. Many of Bill's customers were city workers, and the shop was convenient for the station, business was tailing off by clock, so at eleven sharp closed for lunch. It was hard luck on anybody who wanted a paper or magazine in the afternoon, for most likely Bill would down on the riverbank, fishing, and his nearest competitor was five kilometers away. Sometime in the afternoon, the evening papers landed on the doormat, and at four o'clock Bill reopened. The evening rush lasted till seven, and it was worthwhile. He lived in a flat above the shop, a/one. Except in every bad weather, yon always knew where to find him in the afternoons, as I have said. Once, on a sunny afternoon, I walked home along the river bank from a shopping trip to the village. They say he got there, on April 6. 1909. Not everyone agrees, and a new investigation has reopened the debate.Robert Peary began his last voyage to the North Pole eighty years ago. For months he and his crew made their way slowly to the North Pole, but were they, in fact, standing at the North Pole? Peary did not really say. After Peary returned to the United States, he met with directors of the National Geographic Society. Asked British explorer Warney Herbert to head the neo-investigation. In his investigation of Peary's North Pole claim, Warney Herbert used the latest scientific information about Arctic weather conditions, currents and ice movement. He found records of distances traveled that were hard to believe. He found documents that lackedimportant information. For example, Peary's records lacked details about wind speeds, Arctic weather and ice conditions. Also Peary claimed to have traveled nine hundred and fifty kilometers across the Arctic to the North Pole in less than eight days. Mr. Herbert says no other Arctic explorer has ever claimed to make the trip in such a short time. Mr. Herbert says he was surprised by one thing Robert Peary left no written records of his activities during the thirty hours he spent in the area of the North Pole. Why? Mr. Herbert says it is very possible that Peary was no close to the North Pole after all. Because of navigational mistakes he might have missed the Pole by fifty to one hundred kilometers. If this is true, and if Peary knew it, he might have chosen not to record his activities.Warney Herbert says the lack of firm evidence makes it impossible ever to prove or disprove Robert Peary's claim of reaching the NorthPole first.1.
