Human Nature, Morality, and Fate on the Picture of Dorian Gray China Institute of Language and Literature, Class 1, 李野, 11110007 The Picture of Dorian Gray is written by English writer Oscar Wilde who was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1856. Wilde has various and rich talents of literature and he is a critic, poet, novelist and most successfully a dramatist. As the representative of A estheticism in the 19th century, his most famous and important opinion is “Art for Art’s Sake”. As his only full-length novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray is also a work of Aestheticism, a fine tragedy about soul. Just like the author expressed through the Lord Henry’s mouth: “I n the existed each piece of fine things behind a sad thing, the most humble flowers in the hardship before finally open...”The hero Dorian Gray was a handsome, good-looking, even beautiful anomaly young boy. His friend, painting painters Howard marveled at his appearance and purity that he drew him a real big portrait. Discovering his amazing beauty and having listened to the warden Henry Lord’s boast, Dorian started to feel his beauty was so easy to fleet as well as youth faded away with pain and pity. So he wished that the image instead of him could bear the harm of time and burden of heart, letting him remain youthful beauty forever. Somehow his crazy idea realized later. One night after he rudely treated his beloved fiancee Sibyl Vane and came home, he found that the picture wore a expression of cruelty----the picture started to change with the corruption of Dorian’s mind. The picture filled him with fear and he had it locked up in an old schoolroom in his house, beginning enjoying his life of “comfort” and “guidance”. From then Dorian went ahead to his self-corruption and self-destruction. Here are some thoughts and comprehension which I have summarized from the whole book.Above all, as far as I think, it is of great significance to learn how to resist the lust and the greed which come from our human nature. A line from the movie Seven directed by Dave Fincher has left me deep impression: “Apathy is a solution. It's easier to lose yourselves in drugs than it is to cope with life; It's easy to steal what you want than earn it; It's easier to beat a child than raise it . Hell, love costs, takes effort, work.” During my first time reading the book, I always convinced of that it was cunning Henry as a "spiritual mentor" who misled and cheated Dorian, causing Dorian went bad so as to ruin. But by the time I finished the book, I had already realized that Henry was just a symbol of Dorian’s lust and greed from his soul. The lack of willpower and morality, Dorian’s destruction was inevitable. In reality, we are also struggling with the weakness of human natur e all the time. It’s easier to lose ourselves in Internet than it is to cope with study; It’s easy to copy homework than do it by own; It’s easier to treat people rudely than respect others. Only when we have a good sense of self-control can we become successful people without disturb outside. What’s more, I also hold the view that we have to pay much attention to each quantitative change of our morality. As old saying goes, “Do not do not refrain from doing good, not to be small and evil.” The ruin of Dori an started from a cigarette passing from Henry and the damage of Dorian Gray’s picture started from a maggot; But finally when Dorian was tired of lavish lifestyles meanwhile he was guilty of evil things he had do and innocent people he had hurt, whatever he did and however hard he tried he could not repair the picture. So what he could only do is seeing the picture being decayed and grubby, which made him went mad and anxious until he could not stand it any more. He could do nothing but use the arrow stick through the picture killing himself. If we take a chance and think that do a little bit bad deed is unimportant, we might indulge ourselves even commit crimes. Quantity accumulation causes qualitative change. We must be strick to ourselves from time to time, only in this way can we obtain success and good reputation.Last but not the least, believing it or not, fate plays a role throughout the lifelong time more or less. Just like what Wilde has said in the beginning of the book, “A man of great talent and appearance are always doomed.” These words refer both Dorian and himself. In his letter to his fans he wrote, “Basil Hallward is what I think I am; Lord Henry what the world thinks me; Dorian what I would like to be---- in other ages, perhaps”. In fact, I think Dorian deserved his end---- it was just the choice of fate, the choice of himself. He was loyal to his own ideas and perception, so he got this kind of fate. Or some people will say that people like Dorian reap as them has sown, but to tell the truth, if you experienced the same encounter with he, could you guarantee absolutely that you will not have such a fate? This is human sheepishness, only a few people can live bravely adhering to their principles. Some people may be successful, mostly live smoothly and trivially in the world although they don’t lose themselves. But then again, man proposes and god disposes. If we want to win more from God, we are supposed to strengthen the quality of individual self-cultivation like Beethoven “ hold the throat of Destiny and never bow down to it.”These are what I have learned from The Picture of Dorian Gray. I believed that with the increase of life experiences and lessons, I will gain more from this wonderful novel.。
格雷的画像》《The picture of Dorian Gray》was written by Oscar Wilde. He was the cleverest writter in Ireland. He was born in 1854 and died in 1900. 《The picture od Dorian Gray》was published nearly one hundred years ago,but it still keeps the readers’ interest. Can you see yourself more clearly in the portrait than in the true life ? If a portrait is full of love, perhaps it may let you see more things than your appearance ,like your soul.As an old saying goes ,‘The face is like a book that can tell stories.’When Dorian Gray saw himself in the portrait, he found it beautiful and wished that he would have this face forever and let his own face change into the one in the portrait.. Anything couldn’t destroy his good appearance---either love or time. So he cut the connection between his face and his soul off . His face never changed , always being young and beautiful. In spite of this, the portrait with love told the true story . It was the true Dorian Gray ,becoming older and older, uglier and uglier with hatred. So he killed anyone that knew the secret and those who let him down. He hated the portrait and wanted to break it into pieces. But the man in the portrait and thw man in the real life quickly changed back. He killed himself. When his servant found him ,they saw a dead Gray with a knife in his heart, with old and ugly skin in dark yellow……After reading this novel, I want to say,‘You can never change your appearance but you can change your soul.’This maybe what Oscar wanted to show us , isn’t it ?。

Dorian Gray is a fascinating character depicted in the novel of the same name by Oscar Wilde. The painting of Dorian Gray serves as a reflection of his soul, illustrating the corruption and decay that occurs as a result of his pursuit of beauty and youth. The author"s use of symbolism and allegory is masterful, as evidenced by the contrast between the young and handsome Dorian and the withered, aged version of himself in the painting.Throughout the novel, Dorian"s obsession with his appearance leads him to make increasingly selfish and cruel decisions. He becomes consumed by his desire to stay young and beautiful, ultimately leading to his own downfall. The painting serves as a constant reminder of the consequences of his actions and the price he pays for his vanity.Wilde"s portrayal of Dorian Gray provides athought-provoking exploration of the nature of beauty and the human soul. The novel serves as a cautionary tale, warning readers of the dangers of excessive vanity and the importance of inner beauty.。
I recently finished reading "The Picture of Dorian Gray" by Oscar Wilde, and I must say it left a lasting impression on me.
The novel delves into the concept of vanity, self-indulgence, and the destructive nature of pursuing external beauty at all costs.
Dorian Gray, the main character, starts off as a young, innocent man who is corrupted by his desire to remain youthful and beautiful forever.
The painting that ages in his place serves as a physical representation of his moral decay, while he remains untouched and unchanged by his hedonistic lifestyle.
As Dorian becomes more consumed by his obsession with beauty and pleasure, he loses his humanity and descends into a world of sin and debauchery.

The Picture of Dorian GrayBrief Introduction The first novel I read this term is named The Picture of Dorian Gray written by Oscar Wilde. It was published by Oxford University Press for sale in the People’s Republic of China in 1989.The book I read can be found in the foreign books Beckon. The book contains 97 pages.Main Contents Basil was a famous artist. He painted the picture which was the best one in the whole works that he had ever painted. The portrait was about a handsome man named Dorian Gray. When Basil’s friend, Lord Henry advi sed Basil to send it to the best gallery in London.Basil refused because he had put too much of himself into the picture.Basil gived the picture to Dorian.Basil thought Dorian Gary as a a solution of his art inspiration.Basil thought Dorian was perfect. However, he said in fact he preferred not to be beautiful and in his oppinion, Dorian’s beautiful face will perhaps bring him into danger. That is all right.Because of Darian Gray’s beauty, Lored Henry wanted to know about him.Henry had important effects on ruining Dorian.Dorian was changing gradually.Dorian loved a actress called Sybil Vane. Then a bad thing happened.Because she didn’t perform real Juliet in dramas very well, Dorian was sick of her.He loved her for her art—because she was a Wonderful actress. When Sybil had a bad perform, He said she lost fine art and killed his love for her.Dorian thought if she didn’t have art, she would be nothing After they were broken up, Sybil was so sad that she killed herself. The next day when Dorian went to see the picture of him, he found there was something different about the picture. The face changed—there was something unkind and cruel about the mouth.Dorian felt sick and ashamed.Dorian thought it was his fault that he left Sybil. However, she killed herself.Lored Henry said Sybil never really died and forbad Dorian to cry for her.Dorian was persuaded not to feel sad. From that time on, he realized he had already chosen the right way.He would stay young forever, and enjoy every wild pleasure that life could give him.The face in the picture would grow old, ugly and unkind. But he would stay beautiful forever.Several years passed, but time did not touch the face of Dorian Gary.He enjoyed the life of a rich and fashionable young man.He studied art and music. But his search for pleasure did not stop there. He became hungry for evil pleasure. He became more and more interested in the love with the beauty of his face, more and more interested in the ugliness of his soul.Dorian both hated the picture and loved it.His fear grew stronger every year, and as time passed, the face in the picture grew slowly more terrible. At last Dorian showed Basil the picture that was real Dorian and told him it was Dorian’s soul.Basil knew his secret. And Dorian hated Basil so heavily at that time that he killed Basil.Dorian wanted to be a good man.He wanted to kill his past, so he picked up the knife and dug into the picture.Real Dorian was dead. The story was over.Excellent episodes 1.In the garden the leaves shone in the sunlight, and the flowers moved gently in the summer wind. The two young men sat on a long seat under the shadow of a tall tree.2.I feel that I’ve given myself to somebody who thinks my heart is a pretty flower.A flower that he can enjoy for a summer’s day, and can forget tomorrow.3.There is nothing in the world as important as youth.4.The words filled Dorian’s head like music—wild, exciting music, what a beautiful voice Lord Henry has, he thought. They are only words, but howterrible they are!How bright and dangerous! You cannot escape from words.5.He gave them wings, and they flew like brightly Coloured birds around the room.ReflectionWhen I begin to read the novel, I think that the novel is about homosexuality. However, after reading many pages, I have deep reflection on it.At first, Dorian had an open, honest face. There were no dark secrets in that face. When the kind and gentle boy saw the picture of himself, he said he wished that he could always stay young and that the picture could grow old. When he had the idea, he decided to give anything for his youth. The words that he said implied that Dorianbegan changing. In fact, Henry ruined Dorian with his brains gradually. In the novel, Henry symbolized the Dark Society, ruining people’s wills. But there still was a common person, an aesthete. From the novel we can get some information about Oscar Wilde’s aestheticism. His idea was about “Art for art’s sake”.Henry said something about youth to Dorian. He said:“that there’s nothing more important, more valuable than beauty. When your youth goes, your beauty will go with it.Then you’ll suddenly discover that your life is empty—there will be nothing to enjoy, nothing to hope for.Time is your energy. It will steal everything from you.People are afraid of themselves today.Afraid to live. But with your face and your youth, there’s nothing that you can’t do.You must live!Live the wonderful life that is in youth. We can never be young again. There is nothing in the world as important as youth.” From the words we can understand that aestheticism was popular at that time.Dorian pursed the youth or perfection from that on.Aestheticism ruined Dorian. From Dorian’s life, we can image that many aesthetes maybe have ugly hearts like Dorian. We learned many things fromthe novel. And I understand there is no ideal person in the world. So we should not ask ourselves or other people to be ideal.Youth is important, which asks us to make use of it.However, its importance doesn’t mean that we must keep youth exited.Beauty is not the most important.Even if youth is disappeared, we can still have eternal young heart. The studio was filled with the rich odor of roses, and when the light summer wind stirred amidst the trees of the garden, there came through the open door the heavy scent of the lilac, or the more delicate perfume of the pink-flowering thorn. From the corner of the divan of Persian saddle-bags on which he was lying, smoking, as was his custom, innumerable cigarettes, Lord Henry Wotton could just catch the gleam of the honey-sweat and honey-colored blossoms of a laburnum, whose tremulous branches seemed hardly able to bear the burden of a beauty so flame-like as theirs. And now and then the fantastic shadows of birds in flight flitted across the long tussore-silk curtains that were stretched in front of the huge window, producing a kind of momentary Japanese effect, and making him think of those pallid, jade-faced painters of Tokyo who, through the medium of an art that is necessarily immobile, seek to convey the sense of swiftness and motion. The sullen murmur of the bees shouldering their way through the long unmown grass, or circling with monotonous insistence round the black-crocketed spires of the early June hollyhocks, seemed to make the stillness more oppressive, and the dim roar of London was like the bourdon note of a distant organ.(The Picture Of Dorian Gray,by 《道林·格雷的画像》读后感

The Portrait of Dorian GrayThe Portrait of Dorian Gray is written by English writer Oscar Wilde who was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1856. Wilde has various and rich talents of literature. He is a critic, poet, novelist and most successfully a dramatist. He is the representative of Aestheticism in the 19th century in Britain. And his most famous and important opinion is “Art for Art’s Sake”.The plot of this novel is not easy, because the hero Dorian Gray has experienced a lot of changes of his characteristic. Dorian Gray was a very good-looking and pure young man and his charm gave inspirations to his painter friend, Basil Hallward. Basil was deeply touched by Dorian and he painted a portrait for him. The portrait was extremely fine and Basil didn’t even want it to be exhibited. But just before the portrait was finished, Dorian met Lord Henry Wotton who was a sophisticated dandy at Basil’s home. Henry tried his best to influence Dorian. He told Dorian all kinds of negative thoughts, which made Dorian, feel strange but admirable to Henry. Then Dorian became good friends with Henry but not Basil. They spent a lot of time together. A month later, Dorian fall in love with an actress named Sibyl Vane. Sibyl was 17 years old and very pretty and innocent. She loved Dorian even deeper than Dorian loved her. One night, Dorian invited Henry and Basil to the theatre to watch the performance of Sibyl. But Sibyl acted badly because she suddenly realized that the lines were unreal but the love she had for Dorian was true and more important. She thought that Dorian would understand her but Dorian scolded her strictly and said that he didn’t want to see her any more. Dorian went home and slept for a long time. But the news came the next day that Sibyl was dead—she killed herself. Meanwhile Dorian discovered changes on his portrait. The image of a pure young man looked a bit cruel. He suffered a lot of pressure but soon came back to peace due to Henry’s “comfort”and “guidance”. Dorian then locked the portrait in a small room in case someone saw it. He continued to get influence from Henry.Time went by quickly, but Dorian still looked so young and he led a colorful and cozy life. Then there came the painter Basil who had heard more and more rumors about Dorian. Basil felt sorry and sad for Dorian and wanted to lead Dorian back onto the right way. Dorian, however, stabbed Basil to death. Then Dorian threatened a chemist to help destroy the body of Basil. The chemist suffered greatly and committed suicide in the end. Another man James who was the brother of Sibyl returned from abroad and determined to kill Dorian. However, when the two of them met each other, Dorian denied the truth. He pointed to his young face and told James that he was too young to love his sister. James believed his words for Dorian seemed to be only 20 years old. But later James realized his mistake and continued to murder Dorian. Unfortunately, James was killed by accident.Dorian now thought him completely safe because all those who knew his evil things were dead. He wanted to start life afresh but Henry didn’t believe it. Dorian thought that it might bring some good changes to his portrait if he started to do good things. Then he went to see his portrait again. To his horror, the face was even worse and looked hypocritical and there’s blood dripping from the hand. He was full of hate and seized a knife to ruin the picture. When the picture was stabbed, Dorian fell onto the floor. When he came to himself, the amazing thing happened: the man in the portrait was young and pure again, but the real Dorian became old and withered. So that’s all the changes of Dorian Gray, which are directly related to Lord Henry. Henry is some kind of clever and speaks like a philosopher, but turned out to be the evilest one. He showed no respect for all women and thought Dorian some poisonous theories to spot him. So, Lord Henryis the key person of Dorian’s tragedy.I think this novel is well-written because the characters are described very detailed in fine words. I find that the author is very good at using English. For example:“She is all the great heroines of the world in one.”“W hen poverty creeps in at the door, love flies in through the window.”“S he cried musically.”“S he danced out of the door.”“I t seemed to me that all my life had been narrowed to one perfect point of rose-colored joy.”“W hile she danced, as a plant sways in the water. The curves of her throat were the curves of a white lily. Her hands seemed to be made of cool ivory.”Besides, there are lots of conversations and most of them are long and complicated, which makes me hard to get the real intention of the speaker. And this is what I don’t feel comfortable while reading.I have also looked up to some reference books to find some useful information so that I can understand the story better. According to some critical opinions, “like Dorian’s portrait, the novel has aged badly…Wilde, however, had very little talent for fiction: the plotting is heavy-handed, the characters one-dimensional.”Or “as a period piece, The Portrait of Dorian Gray, like the Sherlock Holmes stories, paints the fog-muffled streets, the dandies, and the languor of London in the 1890’s. The atmosphere of the book is still entrancing even if the basic plot has less impact today.” I don’t know whether they are right, but I’ll try to understand.。
The Picture of Dorian GrayBrief IntroductionThe first novel I read this term is named The Picture of Dorian Gray written by Oscar Wilde. It was published by Oxford University Press for sale in the People’s Republic of China in 1989. The book I read can be found in the foreign books Beckon. The book contains 97 pages.Main ContentsBasil was a famous artist. He painted the picture which was the best one in the whole works that he had ever painted. The portrait was about a handsome man named Dorian Gray. When Basil’s friend, Lord Henry advised Basil to send it to the best gallery in London. Basil refused because he had put too much of himself into the picture. Basil gived the picture to Dorian. Basil thought Dorian Gary as a a solution of his art inspiration. Basil thought Dorian was perfect. However, he said in fact he preferred not to be beautiful and in his oppinion, Dorian’s beautiful face will perhaps bring him into danger. That is all right.Because of Darian Gray’s beauty, Lored Henry wanted to know about him. Henry had important effects on ruining Dorian. Dorian was changing gradually.Dorian loved a actress called Sybil Vane. Then a bad thing happened.Because she didn’t perform real Juliet in dramas very well, Dorian was sick of her. He loved her for her art—because she was a Wonderful actress. When Sybil had a bad perform, He said she lost fine art and killed his love for her. Dorian thought if she didn’t have art, she would be nothing After they were broken up, Sybil was so sad that she killed herself. The next daywhen Dorian went to see the picture of him, he found there was something different about the picture. The face changed —there was something unkind and cruel about the mouth. Dorian felt sick and ashamed. Dorian thought it was his fault that he left Sybil. However, she killed herself. Lored Henry said Sybil never really died and forbadDorian to cry for her. Dorian was persuaded not to feel sad. From that time on, he realized he had already chosen the right way. He would stay young forever, and enjoy every wild pleasure that life could give him. The face in the picture would grow old, ugly and unkind. But he would stay beautiful forever.Several years passed, but time did not touch the face of Dorian Gary. He enjoyed the life of a rich and fashionable young man. He studied art and music. But his search for pleasure did not stop there. He became hungry for evil pleasure. He became more and more interested in the love with the beauty of his face, more and more interested in the ugliness of his soul. Dorian both hated the picture and loved it. His fear grew stronger every year, and as time passed, the face in the picture grew slowly more terrible. At last Dorian showed Basil the picture that was real Dorian and told him it was Dorian’s soul. Basil knew his secret. And Dorian hated Basil so heavily at that time that he killed Basil.Dorian wanted to be a good man.He wanted to kill his past, so he picked up the knife and dug into the picture. Real Dorian was dead. The story was over.Excellent episodes1.In the garden the leaves shone in the sunlight, and the flowers moved gently in the summer wind. The two young men sat on a long seat under the shadow of a tall tree.2.I feel that I’ve given myself to somebody who thinks my heart is a pretty flower. A flower that he can enjoy for a summer’s day, an d can forget tomorrow.3.There is nothing in the world as important as youth.4.The words filled Dorian’s head like music—wild, exciting music, whata beautiful voice Lord Henry has, he thought. They are only words, buthow terrible they are! How bright and dangerous! The words that he said implied that Dorian began changing. In fact, Henry ruined Dorian with his brains gradually. In the novel, Henry symbolized the Dark Society, ruining people’s wills. But ther e still was a common person, an aesthete. From the novel we can get some information about Oscar Wilde’s aestheticism. His idea was about “Art for art’s sake”. Henry said something about youth to Dorian. He said:“that there’s nothing more important, more v aluable than beauty. When your youth goes, your beauty will go with it. Then you’ll suddenly discover that your life is empty—there will benothing to enjoy, nothing to hope for. Time is your energy. It will steal everything from you. People are afraid of themselves today. Afraid to live. But with your face and your youth, there’s nothing that you can’t do. You must live! Live the wonderful life that is in youth. We can never be young again. There is nothing in the world as important as youth.” From the wor ds we can understand that aestheticism was popular at that time. Dorian pursed the youth or perfection from that on. Aestheticism ruined Dorian. From Dorian’s life, we can image that many aesthetes maybe have ugly hearts like Dorian. We learned many things from the novel. And I understand there is no ideal person in the world. So we should not ask ourselves or other people to be ideal. Youth is important, which asks us to make use of it. However, its importance doesn’t mean that we must keep youth exited. Beauty is not the most important. Even if youth is disappeared, we can still have eternal young heart.

The sword, piercing the superficial lifeRecently,I have been attracted by a Gothic novel,The Picture Of Dorian Gray。
What catches my eyes is its scared, unimaginable plot。
And the plot which full of profound meaning is also a highlight。
Portrait of Dorian Gray is a 19th century masterpiece of aestheticism, which had been called ”Art for Art" Trend in fiction and drama pinnacle of painting. This is a smart tragedy about the soul,in the end of the novelthe writer used one sentence of Shakespeare's Hamlet:" It is like painting a portrait for the sorrow, a face without soul",this is a true portrayalof Dorian Gray。
And it is also a tragic story by revealing to us the beauty of the appearance of concrete, which can only exist with the tragedy. This novel tells a young man,Dorian Gray ,who born with unusual pretty ,when he found his amazing beauty, and listened to boast of Henry,he started feeling sad for his easily lost youth ,then he hope the portrait can replace the burden of years and the mind, and let him always be young and beautiful, no one can believe that the dream of his desire later realized somehow. Until One night he was manhandled his love actressSybil Reed Well, when he back home, he found that it was cruel portrait appeared on the face。
Dorian Gray's portrait is a haunting and thought-provoking piece of literature that delves into the dark side of human nature and the consequences of vanity and self-indulgence. The novel, written by Oscar Wilde, follows the story of a young man named Dorian Gray who becomes infatuated with his own beauty and makes a Faustian bargain to retain his youthful appearance while his portrait ages and decays in his place. One of the most striking aspects of the novel is the character of Dorian Gray himself. At the beginning of the story, Dorian is portrayed as a handsome and innocent young man, but as he becomes more obsessed with his own beauty, he descends into a spiral of corruption and depravity. His transformation from a charming and likable individual to a cruel and selfish monster is both fascinating and disturbing to witness. The portrait of Dorian Gray serves as a powerful symbol of the consequences of vanity and self-indulgence. As Dorian's actions become more and more wicked, the portrait reflects his inner decay and moral corruption. The painting becomes increasingly grotesque and horrifying, mirroring the true nature of Dorian's soul. This juxtaposition between Dorian's outward appearance and his inner self is a chilling reminder of the dangers of prioritizing external beauty over inner goodness.Wilde's writing in "The Picture of Dorian Gray" is both beautiful and evocative. His use of language is rich and poetic, drawing the reader into the decadent and hedonistic world of Dorian Gray. The novel is filled with memorable quotes and passages that explore themes of beauty, morality, and the nature of art. Wilde's wit and clever wordplay add depth and complexity to the story, making it a compelling and thought-provoking read.Overall, "The Picture of Dorian Gray" is a timeless classic that continues to captivate readers with its exploration of the darker aspects of human nature. Wilde's vivid imagery, complex characters, and moral dilemmas make this novel a must-read for anyone interested in the complexities of the human psyche. The portrait of Dorian Gray is ahaunting reminder of the dangers of vanity and self-absorption, and serves as a cautionary tale for those who prioritize external beauty over inner virtue.。
