阅读理解A(2015·贵阳高三适应性监测考试)Many years ago, when I was fresh out of school and working in Denver, I was driving to my parents’home in Missouri for Christmas. I stopped at a gas station about 50 miles from Oklahoma City, where I was planning to visit a friend. While I was standing in line at the cash register(收款机), I said hello to an old couple who were also paying for gas.I took off, but had gone only a few miles when black smoke began pouring from the back of my car. I stopped and wondered what I should do. A car pulled up behind me. It was the couple I had spoken to at the gas station. They said they would take me to my friend’s. We chatted on the way into the city, and when I got out of the car, the husband gave me his business card.I wrote him and his wife a thankyou note for helping me. Soon afterwards, I received a Christmas present from them. Their note that came with it said that helping me had made their holidays meaningful.Years later, I drove to a meeting in a nearby town in the morning. In the late afternoon I returned to my car and found that I’d left the lights on all day, and the battery was dead. Then I noticed that the Friendly Ford dealership—a shop selling cars—was right next door. I walked over and found two salesmen in the showroom.“Just how friendly is Friendly Ford?”I asked and explained my trouble. They quickly drove a pickup truck to my car and started it. They would accept no payment. When I got home, I wrote them a note to say thanks. I received a letter back from one of the salesmen. No one had ever taken the time to write him and say “thank you”,and it meant a lot, he said.“Thank you”—two powerful words. They’re easy to say and mean so much.1.Why did the writer get into the old couple’s car?A.His parents were in the car.B.His car had broken down.C.His friend told him to do so.D.His car’s oil had run out.2.From the text, we know that the old couple were ________.A.talkative B.braveC.kind D.lonely3.What did the old couple think of helping the writer?A.They could get a reward.B.It made their holiday worthy.C.They did it by chance.D.It was due to a thank-you letter.4.What would be the best title for the text?A.An Experience to MissouriB.An Old CoupleC.A Meaningful HolidayD.A Meaningful ThankyouB(2015·呼和浩特第一次调研)It is not so long ago that the extended family lived under the same roof. Children grew up knowing their cousins, aunts and uncles, grandparents, and other relatives. These children felt connected. In these not toolongago times people were connected to their food. Most people grew their own vegetables and fruit. Many families had a house cow for milk, cheese, butter and cream. Most families also had meat animals. When visitors came unexpectedly, dad would be sent out back to kill the chicken for dinner. Everyone was involved in cooking and mealtimes were a social event. When the meal ended, most of the family were involved in cleaning up and washing up.How different is the situation today? The fast life is all around us—fast food, fast cars, fast conversations, fast families, fast holidays. Our fast paced life has weakened these connections. We have been fooled into thinking we need to, or even must, be fast and have what the “fast life”gives us. Stress is leading to many new health problems. The solution is the Slow Movement. It aims to deal with the problem of “time poverty”through making connections. It supports a growing cultural shift towards slowing down. It has spread to more than sixty countries and become a worldwide movement. The Slow Movement tells us that we need to slow down and connect with our life. Just 50 years ago Manx seemed to be on the point of disappearing. “If you spoke Manx in a pub on the island in the 1960s, it was considered provocative and you were likely to find yourself in a fight,” recalls Brian Stowell, a 76⁃year⁃old islander who has written a Manx⁃language novel, The Vampire Murders, and presents himself in a radio show called Manx Radio spreading the language every Sunday. The language itself is similar to the Gaelic tongues spoken in the island's neighbours, Ireland and Scotland. A century ago, “Moghrey mie” would have been commonly heard instead of “Good morning” on the island.“In the 1860s there were thousands of Manx people who couldn't speak English,” says Stowell. “But only a century later it was considered to be so backward to speak the language that there were stories of Manx speakers getting stones thrown at them in the towns. I learnt it myself from one of the last surviving native speakers back in the 1950s.”Recession in the mid⁃19th century forced many Manx people to leave the island to seek work in England. And parents were not willing to pass the language down through the generations, with many people believing that to have Manx as the first language would affect job opportunities overseas. There was a fall in the language. By the early 1960s there were perhaps as few as 200 who spoke the tongue. The last native speaker, Ned Maddrell, died in 1974. UNESCO pronounced that the language died out in the 1990s.Now there is even a Manx language primary school in which all subjects are taught in this language, with more than 60 pupils attending it. Imagine that you are in a remote village somewhere with no medical clinic. __1__ Once the doctors get to you, they examine you and take blood samples, but they won't be able to help you until they take the samples back to the hospital to find out what is wrong. __2__ Thanks to engineer Andy Ozcan, many people may never be in this situation. He has invented an app that turns your mobile phone into a diagnostic (诊断的) tool.Ozcan's invention is important because it is very accurate and easy to use. In many remote places, even if doctors have microscopes and other instruments to help them make diagnoses, there may still be other problems. Many doctors, for example, don't have enough training to correctly interpret what they see. __3__ With Ozcan's mobile phone app, health workers can take a special photo of a blood sample and send it to a central computer at a hospital. The computer will then automatically interpret the photo and send a diagnosis back in a few minutes.__4__ His technology only requires a mobile phone and an Internet connection. As more than four billion people already have cell phones, the cost of establishing the diagnostic system is fairly low.By inventing a medical tool that uses existing technology—mobile phones, Ozcan has developed a medical tool that is both practical and economical. Therefore, it can be effective almost anywhere. __5__A.Another reason why Ozcan's invention is important is that it is inexpensive.B.Even though you may only have a simple infection (感染), you might die because of the delay.C.People are trying to reduce the cost of this new medical tool.D.Ozcan's simple, cost-effective tool might just save millions of lives around the world.E.This tool has become much more popular all around the world.F.You become very sick and must wait days until a mobile medical unit arrives to help.G.As a result, they may diagnose illnesses incorrectly.

If you feel stressed by responsibilities at work, you should take a step back and identify(识另ij)those of 1 (great)and less importance. Dr.Christopher Wilk is a member of a small group of elevator experts who consider this a misunderstanding. Without the elevator, they point out, there could be no downtown skyscrapers or tall buildings, and city life as we know it would be impossible. In that sense, they argue, the elevator's role in American history has been no less significant than that of cars. In fact, according to Wilk, the car and the elevator have been locked in a zz secret war?,for over a century, with cars making it possible for people to spread horizontally(水平地),and elevators pushing them toward life in close groups of towering vertical(垂直的)columns. If we tend to ignore the significance of elevators, it might be because riding in them tends to be such a brief, boring, and even awkward experience—one that can involve unexpectedly meeting people with whom we have nothing in common, and an unpleasant awareness of the fact that we're hanging from a cable in a long passage. In a new book, Lifted, German journalist and cultural studies professor Andreas Bernard directed all his attention to this experience, studying the origins of elevator and its relationship to humankind and finding that riding in an elevator has never been a totally comfortable experience/After 150 years, we are still not used to it/Bernard said."We still have not exactly learned to cope with the mixture of closeness and displeasure/'That mixture, according to Bernard, sets the elevator ride apart from just about every other situation we find ourselves in as we go about our lives.Today, as the world's urban population explodes, and cities become more crowded, taller, and more crowded, America's total number of elevators—900,000 at last count, according to日evator Worldmagazine,s/Z2012 Vertical Transportation Industry''—are a force that/s becoming more important than ever. And for the people who really, really love them, it seems like high time that we looked seriously at just what kind of force they are.1.What does the underlined word〃this〃in Paragraph 1 refer to?A.The general view of elevators.B.The particular interests of experts.C.The desire for a remarkable machine.D.The enthusiasm for transport vehicles.2.The author's purpose in mentioning cars isA. to contrast their functions with elevators/B.to emphasize the importance of elevatorsto reveal their secret war against elevatorsC.to explain people's preference for elevatorsAccording to Prof.Bernard, what has made the elevator ride different from other life experiences?A.Vertical direction.ck of excitement.C.Little physical space.D.Uncomfortable conditions.3.The author urges readers to consider .A.the exact number of elevator loversthe serious future situation of elevatorsB.the role of elevators in city developmentthe relationship between cars and elevators参考答案:翻译练习:译文参考-The Development of ArtLast week, a friend working in the committee invited me to visit an artist with good reputation, who is also an aggressive scholar. We met him in the flesh in a cafe across the avenue of his district. The artist told us a great deal about art, which appealed to me greatly, because I have a preference for art. It was from him that I specifically learned about art further.Art is influenced by the customs and faith of a people. There are different art types in different periods. During the Middle Ages, the aim of a typical picture of a conventional artist was to represent religious themes, but it was evident that ideas changed over time. During the Renaissance, people began to adopt a more humanistic attitude to life. Rich people wanted to possess their own paintings drawn in perspective technique. By coincidence, oil paints were also developed at this time. In the late 19th century, painters were eager to show how light and shadow fell on objects at different times of day, whose paintings were considered to be ridiculous, abstract and controversial. Art masterpieces are all presenting the permanent civilization of human whether it is modern or contemporary.Afterwards, the artist invited us to visit his art exhibition in his gallery , at which there were many famous art works, including vivid sculptures with signatures, figures made of clay, paintings carved on the surface of marbles and fragile pottery smelling fragrant, but I can't stand, because I am allergic to this kind of flavour. It was a absolutely visual feast. Someone attempted to take photos, however, taking photos was forbidden at the exhibition. 组合练(八) 阅读理解+阅读七选五+短文改错Ⅰ.阅读理解AThe British live on a small island. They are surrounded by the sea,so it is not surprising that the sea has always played an important role in their lives. After the development of large, oceangoing sailing ships in the fifte enth century, the sea became even more important to the country's development.Ships setting sail from England determined to extend Britain's territories, its wealth and its knowledge of the world.Ships returned to England bringing goods, people and new ideas from foreign places.By the nineteenth century,Britain had the largest, most powerful navy in the world. The great sailing ships were so much a part of British life that they even affected the language. Many English expressions we use today were originally nautical (航海的) terms, although most people no longer realize this. For example, people commonly describe an honest and fair business deal as being “above board”.This expression was originally used in sailing ship times when secretive, dishonest ship's business would be carried out below decks (below the boards) out of public view.On the other hand, honest business was always conducted on deck (above the boards),in the open where everyone could see what was going on.“Pipe down!”,meaning “Be quiet!”,is another common expression that has nautical origins. The ship's boatswain (水手长) would blow a whistle,or pipe,at the end of the day to indicate (表明) to the sailors it was time to quieten down and go to sleep. Most native English speakers have heard the expression “not e nough room to swing a cat”,but few know that the “cat” does not refer to a small furry animal with four legs and a tail. The “cat” is actually a short form of “cat of nine tails”—a whip with nine knotted (打结的) tails.A boatswain needed a lot of space in order to swing the whip properly when lashing (鞭打) a poor sailor under his control![语篇解读] 本文是一篇说明文。

8′While the presence of rats in homes may cause anxiety and annoyance, they rarely result in driving out the residents. But that is exactly what happened to the inhabitants of the 10-square-mile Hawadax Island off the coast of Alaska, almost 230 years ago.Now thanks to a five-year effort byscientists, the terribly silent “Rat Island” asit had been called for many years has been returnedto its rightful owners—birds!Hawadax Island is part of a chain of volcanicislands in the Bering Sea called the Aleutian Islands. The rats that arrived there in 1780,when a Japanese ship carrying them broke down nearby, completely destroyed the native population because the environment of the island was not built to defend its animals from these predators. There isn't any tree on the island, which meant that the birds were accustomed to building their nests low in the ground, giving the rodents(啮齿动物) easy access to both eggs and baby chicks. As years passed, the birds that had called the island home for thousands of years became endangered and eventually, disappeared completely. In 2007,the U.S.FWS(Fish and Wildlife Service) started a serious plan to rid the island of the rats and try bringing back the beautiful birds that had once called it home.Given that there were an estimated 10,000 rodents inhabiting “Rat Island” and the fact that they reproduce rapidly,it was not an easy task. But by 2009,the island was officially declared rat free! Then slowly but surely, the birds began to return.Unfortunately, some of the pioneers were unintentionally killed from the leavings of the raticide,a poison that had been used to wipe out the rodents. But now it seems things are becoming more stable and the island is starting to increasingly look like its former self. Before the transformation,“Hawadax”,also known as “Rat Island”,was a silent and ghostly place with bird bones, snail remains and rocks covered in rat feces(粪便).Today, birds' singing and flying in and out is a common sight.Tufted puffins and song sparrows, which had long disappeared, are gradually making their way back.Scientists have also been observing an increase in ground nesting and shorebirds.Though the island is still not back to its full glory, the signs are encouraging and things can only get better,as time passes.【语篇解读】本文讲述了在哈瓦达克斯岛上因老鼠入侵而导致鸟类灭绝,经过科学家们的努力,猖獗的老鼠被消灭了。
