Then you will not be happy to hear that schools all over the world are seriously considering exchanging traditional desks for ones with no seats at all—yes, that means you will be encouraged to stand through those already too long math and science lessons! Why would anyone even think of putting kids to such cruelty? Experts say it improves their health and helps fight obesity. While that may seem a little far-fetched(牵强的) the officials at the few schools around the world seem to agree.Among them are educators from the College Station Independent School District in Texas, who recently completed a week-long experiment involving 480 students across three elementary schools. The 374 kids that agreed to participate in the study were provided with a device that helped record the step count and calorie consumption over the entire period. All 25 teachers involved in the study reported that students appeared to be more alert and concentrate better, when allowed to stand. The one thing that did surprise the researchers was that younger kids were more willing to stay standing than kids in higher grades. They believe this may have something to do with the fact that after years of being asked to “sit still”, older kids have a harder time adjusting to this unexpected freedom.American schools are not the only ones reporting success with stand-up desks. Four Catholic schools in Perth, Australia, which have been testing them since October 2013, have seen similar results. In May 2014, Grove House Primary School in Bradford, West Yorkshire, became Europe's first test one, with a seven-week trial that involved the use of desks made by Ergotron in their fifth-grade classrooms. Whileofficial results are not out yet, early reactions from both teachers and students have been extremely encouraging. The findings of these studies and others done previously all seem to mean that allowing kids to move around in classrooms is a win-win for students and teachers—it helps kids get healthier and provides educators with a more engaged audience.语篇解读:本文是一篇说明文。

I spent my first five years within the loving arms of my family, and when the time came for me to begin school at PS 116 in Brooklyn, I was sure that no one would keep me safe. But I was so lucky to meet Mrs. Heyman. Not only did she make me feel safe, she let me know that I was special.Kindergarten was a fearful experience for me. I was a shy child who hated being separated from my mommy. Mrs. Heyman was a kind and patient teacher who tried to get me to stop crying each morning after I asked for one last kiss. She would distract (转移……的注意力) me with pens and colorful paper and by playing beautiful music. It seemed the feeling of being an artist distracted me from my separation unhappiness, allowing me to attend class as the tears ran down my face.I also loved to sing and dance, and performed (表演) the Virginia reel — a kind of dance — when the principal (校长), Mr. Barton, visited our class.Mr. Barton was an old, serious man who liked to walk behind children who behaved badly and shout, “Behave!” I was afraid of being shouted at by him, and practiced the dance with my classmates until Mrs. Heyman told us we were perfect.Unluckily, I was so nervous before Mr. Barton’s visit that I wet myself. Mrs. Heyman calmly (冷静地) took me to the bathroom and told me to change into new clothes, drying my tears all the while, never showing judgment. As I performed, Mr. Barton cheered. Pleased, I bravely stepped up to the front of the classroom and threw kisses in Mrs. Heyman’s direction.I was lucky to have her again for the first grade, and learned to love school and learning. She was right about living my life without long-lasting attention from my mommy.24. What was the author’s life like before he went to kindergarten?A. Busy.B. Happy.C. Lonely.D. Unsafe.25. How did Mrs. Heyman draw the author’s attention away from separationunhappiness?A. By letting him do art.B. By giving him a kiss.C. By dancing with him.D. By inviting his mother to school.26. What can be learned about Mr. Barton?A. He was always friendly.B. He was strict with the students.C. He was interested in performing.D. He was full of praise for the author.27. What happened before the author’s performance?A. He got himself in a mess.B. He received ill-treatment.C. He failed to find his new clothes.D. He visited the bathroom many times.CSince 2013, Awesome Con has brought together tens of thousands of comic book fans (漫画书迷) for a special weekend in Washington, D.C. This year’s event was held from March 30 through April 1 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. At the yearly event, artists sell comic books, artwork, and other things. There are also performances, discussions, and famous guests. Awesome Con also has game rooms, where visitors can play many popular games like Donkey Kong.Of all the activities at Awesome Con, cosplay is surely the most attractive one. Many people see Awesome Con as a way to express themselves and show off their hobbies. Cosplay is a very good way to achieve this purpose.Cosplay is dressing up as a character (角色) from movies, games, or comics. People dress as superheroes, time travelers, robots, etc. Many build their own clothes and some of them are very skillfully made.“It’s a huge part of the whole event, and it’s really nice to see ev eryone having fun and putting so much time and energy (精力) into their cosplay clothes,” said John Hutson, who dressed up as superhero Captain America.“I dressed up as Deadpool,” said another comic book fan Sandy Millin. “I really enjoy this character, and I came out here because it allows me to express myself freely.”For those who attend Awesome Con, talking about hobbies with people you don’t know is fun. There are other advantages too. For example, in Artist Alley, where comic-book creators talk to fans and sign books and drawings, you can find many different kinds of art and people who like that kind of work. “It’s nice to see not very well-known artists finally getting recognized (认可) for their wonderful artwork by people who really enjoy cartoons, comics, and video games,” said a student from Takoma Park Middle School in Maryland.28. What is the most eye-catching activity at Awesome Con?A. Game playing.B. Book selling.C. Discussion.D. Cosplay.29. How did John Hutson feel about dressing up?A. Very tiring.B. A bit regretful.C. A bit doubtful.D. Very enjoyable.30. Why did Sandy Millin come to Awesome Con?A. To do cosplay.B. To meet Deadpool.C. To buy comic books.D. To get his comic books signed.31. What is the last paragraph mainly about?A. How artists get recognized.B. The activities in Artist Alley.C. The advantages of Awesome Con.D. Fun things to do at Awesome Con.DI did some research and examined how British English and American English changed between the 1930s and the 2000s. Take spelling, for example — towards the1960s it looked like the UK was going in the direction of not using the “u” in “colour” and writing “centre” as “center”. But since then, the British have become more confident (自信的) in some of their own spellings. In the 2000s, the UK used an American spelling choice about 11% of the time while Americans use a British one about 10% of the time. There is also no need to worry too much about American words, such as “vacation”, “liquor” and “lawmaker” entering British English. There are a few examples of this kind of vocabulary change but they are mostly uncommon words and are not likely to change British English too much. The British are still using “mum” rather than “mom” and “petrol” rather than “gas”.But when we start thinking of language more in terms of style than vocabulary or spelling, a different picture appears. Some of the bigger trends (趋势) in American English are moving towards a freer use of language. American sentences are on average (平均) one word shorter in 2006 than they were in 1931.Americans also use a lot more apostrophes (撇号) in their writing than they used to, which has the eff ect of turning the two words “do not” into the single “don’t”. “The hand of the king” becomes the shorter “The king’s hand”.However, in all these ways Brits are changing too — and in the same way as Americans. They’re just about 30 years behind the trend that Americans seem to be leading. So this raises a question, is British English actively following American English or is this something that is simply a natural trend in language use? Perhaps the British would have gone in that direction even if America had never been discovered? I’d like to agree with the second idea but because of the fact that British people learn plenty of American language through different ways, I think the first is more correct.32. What did the British do in the 1960s?A. They used some American spellings.B. They built up confidence in their language.C. They did research on language differences.D. They went in the direction of harder spellings.33. What does the author try to show by using examples like “petrol”?A. British English has changed a lot.B. Some uncommon words are used less often.C. American words are entering British English.D. American spelling won’t change British English too much.34. Which of the following is a trend of American English?A. It is using shorter words.B. It is turning to proper grammar.C. It is avoiding using apostrophes.D. It is trying to make sentences simpler.35. Which of the following is the author’s opinion about the languages?A. American English is going the wrong way.B. British Engl ish is following American English’s example.C. American English is borrowing a lot from British English.D. Languages wouldn’t change much if America was not discovered.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

Module 2 My New Teachers Period 2 Reading and Vocabulary Ⅰ. 阅读理解ANot having done physical exercise for some time, I found myself a littlelow-spirited and couldn’t study efficiently, so I decided to do somerunning the next day. At 6: 15 the next morning, my alarm clock rang. Unwilling to rise from my bed, I turned it off and went back to sleep. However, 5 minutes later, I struggled to get up. After washing and brushing,I had my sneakers on and went out.Wow! The air was so fresh that I couldn’t help b reathing it deeply. I stretched(伸展)my arms and legs, then started to run. I found all things around me were so attractive. Look, the branches were waving, as if they were welcoming me; the blossoming flowers were bowing, with shyness, just like girls. Listen, the wind was whispering, as if to say“come on, girl”. What’s more interesting was those two birds, perching in the tree. They were scared and flew away when I passed them. “Hey, chaps, relax. ”I shouted without stopping running. “Let’s enjoy the beautiful morning together! ”Then mira cle(奇迹)happened. The two little creatures seemed to understand what I said. They turned back and twittered(吱吱叫)around me. “Are you singing for me? ”I asked. They twittered again and again, sounded like“Yes”. I was delighted to hear that. Ah, what a wonderful m orning and how beautiful life is!Actually, there are a lot of charming things around us. Helen Keller wrote in her famous article Three Days to See,“The seeing see little”. Indeed, many of us ignore the beauty around us, just because we are familiar with them. They always complain that life is boring. But, I just want to say, if you live each day with appreciation of things around, you’ll find life is very charming.

阅读理解A(2017·福州高三检测)My teacher,Mr.August J.Bachmann, was the most influential teacher I ever had.I had gotten into trouble in his class:Another student had pushed me for fun,and I became angry and began to hit him.Mr.Bachmann stopped the fight, but instead of sending me to the office,he sat me down and asked a simple question,“Penna, why are you wasting your life? Why aren't you going to college?”I didn't know anything about colleges or scholarships. No one had ever considered that a fatherless boy from the poorest neighborhood had a future. That day, instead of rushing off for lunch,he stayed and explained possible education options to me.At the end of our talk,he sent me to see a secretary who had a child at a state college. This was in 1962 at Emerson High School in Union City,New Jersey.Well,55 years have passed, and what have I done with the knowledge he gave me?I gained a PhD from Fordham University when I was only 29.I taught English and social studies and then moved up the chain of command from teacher to principal(校长).I've sat on the board for Magnet Schools of America and represented that organization at the United Nations.I've won a number of great educational awards. But where would I be if a truly caring teacher had not taken the time out of his lunch period to speak to me?It was without question only his confidence in me that helped me forward.I have repaid his kindness hundreds of times by encouraging misguided youngsters to aim higher. If I have saved any children,it is because of him.If I have been a successful educator,it is because I had a great role model in Mr.Bachmann.【语篇解读】本文是一篇记叙文。
