1 1997 may be the year for the world to catch up with a
vision of a networked future, and the results are shaking up enterprises, economies and governments around the world. Financial markets have moved off paper and onto ether waves; businesses are grabbing at newly globalized markets; and even slow-moving bureaucracies are fingering the Internet, searching for a balance between information and freedom. Starting this week in Davos, Switzerland, 1,200 of the world’s most influential businessmen and politicians---leaders who may not have known a data link from a cuff link a decade ago---will spend six days debating the shape and texture of life in the networked future. An additional journalist, dignitaries and other interested observers will be in attendance.

Population growth and the developmental pressures spawned by an unequal distribution of wealth are two major driving forces that are altering the earth in ways that threaten the long-term health of humans and other species on the planet. Human health is dependent on the healthy functioning of the earth's ecosystem. These systems would be overwhelmed if all of the earth's inhabitants were to match the consumption patterns of wealthier nations.

SustainableDevelopmentGoals可持续发展目标,英语阅读材料
SustainableDevelopmentGoals可持续发展⽬标,英语阅读材料The Sustainable Development GoalsThe Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also called Global Goals, are a proposed set of targets relating to futureinternational development. They are to replace the Millennium Development Goals once those expire at the end of 2015.The SDGs were first formally discussed at the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development held in Rio de Janeiro in June 2012 (Rio+20).On 19 July 2014, the UN General Assembly's Open Working Group on Sustainable Development Goals (OWG) forwarded a proposal for the SDGs to the Assembly. The proposal contained 17 goals with 169 targets covering a broad range of sustainable development issues. These included ending poverty and hunger, improving health and education, making cities more sustainable, combating climate change, and protecting oceans and forests. On 4 December 2014, the UN General Assembly accepted the Secretary-General's Synthesis Report which stated that the agenda for the post-2015 SDG process would be based on the OWG proposals.BackgroundUp to 2015, the development agenda was centered on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which were officially established following the Millennium Summit of the United Nations in 2000. The MDGs encapsulated eight globally agreed goals in the areas of poverty alleviation, education, gender equality and empowerment of women, child and maternal health, environmental sustainability, reducing HIV/AIDS and communicable diseases, and building a global partnership for development. The MDGs were supposed to be achieved by 2015, so a further process was needed to agree and develop development goals from 2015-2030. Discussion on the post-2015 framework for international development began well in advance. Formal debate concerning the SDGs first occurred at the 2012 United Nations conference in Rio de Janeiro. The 192 UN member states agreed at the Rio+20 summit to start a process of designing sustainable development goals, which are “action-oriented, concise and easy to communicate, limited in number, aspirational, global in nature and universally applicable to all countries while taking into account different national realities, capacities and levels of development and respecting national policies and priorities”.The Rio+20 outcome document, “The Future We Want”, called for the goals to be integrated into the UN’s post-2015 Development Agenda. This included the following goals:1.End poverty in all its forms everywhere.End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture.Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages. Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.5.Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all.Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all. Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation.10.Reduce inequality within and among countries.Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns.Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts. Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development.15.Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss. Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels.17.Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development. The term "sustainable development" was first popularized in 1987 by the World Commission on Environment and
Development. In essence, it is concerned with meeting the needs of people today without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
Yet to keep sustainability is not just the responsibility of environmental specialists or communications professionals. It requires contributions from people across all functions of the world.
Let’s take the development of the Asia and Pacific region for example. Over the past 40 years economic growth in this region has been impressive and has resulted in dramatic poverty reduction. However, rapid economic expansion has also had environmental and social costs. Growth has generated high levels of resource consumption, pollution and waste, with the costs of environmental degradation estimated at 4-8% of GDP in many countries. Asian cities are plagued by dirty air, low levels of sanitation, and scarce water supplies. In rural areas, ecosystems are strained by the unsustainable exploitation of natural resources.
People often misinterpret sustainable development as focusing solely on environmental issues. In reality, sustainable development is a much broader concept which emphasizes the balance and integration of the three sustainability pillars of economic development, social harmony and environmental protection.

Nowadays, with the rapid economic growth, people are paying much interest in sustainable development, they are worrying about the deterioration of the environment they are living in, while they are enjoying the improvement of life quality.
Sustainable development requires alterations in the lifestyle of the wealthy to live within the carrying capacity of the environment. It seeks to develop means of supporting economic growth while supporting biodiversity, relieving poverty and without using up natural capital in the short term at the expense of long term development.
Sustainable development is part of the broader governance challenge facing many countries. Continuing economic growth will provide the foundation for addressing poverty and ecological issues. The “grow now, clean up later” approach must be abandoned. Finding the right balance between economic growth, environmental safeguards, and improved quality of life for all is the challenge to be addressed through more integrated sustainable development approaches.
Development planning needs to link economic, environmental and social concerns. The World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) are giving greater emphasis to the integration of environmental factors in Poverty Reduction Strategies (PRS). A concerted effort is needed at national and international levels to integrate environmental and social safeguards with the economic development.
The development and implementation of sustainability strategies should also involve groups such as environment and development NGOs, unions, farmers, youth, women and indigenous people. These groups should also seek to establish interactive networking among themselves to ensure more effective representation and participation with governments.
Governments should be getting serious about sustainable development, create a conducive political climate, take steps to provide access to sustainable livelihoods, education and health care for a larger share of the population, and to provide incentives and assistance to foster broader civil society participation through strengthening capacity and other forms of support. Some countries (such as Japan, Korea, Mongolia, the Philippines, and Thailand) have established National Sustainable Development Councils, which are effective vehicles for involving a range of stakeholders in the planning, formulation and implementation of national sustainable development strategies.
