We played so much that, needless to say, some of the stories got quite (33) bizarre. Eventually, Super Secret Spy was like a science fiction movie; the stories took place on other planets and one of us was an alien. Sometimes, we would wear old Halloween masks so the (34) resemblance to an alien was remarkable!I remember one day in particular. Joseph was the alien and he captured me on a (35) barren, empty planet (my backyard). He threw me in "alien prison" (behind a big tree) and (36) giggled with mischievous delight. At first, I felt all alone and (37) helpless. Then I pulled myself together and remembered that I was the Super Secret Spy!I thought of my escape plan. You decide to (32) commission a painting from a young artist whose work you admire. What would you have him paint?Would you ask for an epic battle set in a(n) (33) mythological world of monsters and fairies or would you ask for a realistic, (34) expressive portrait of yourself? If you chose the latter, you're in good company because that is (35) precisely what I did. I had seen so many beautiful portraits of famous people hanging in museums that I thought it was time to have my very own.It took me a long time to find a highly (36) qualified artist whose work would do justice to my portrait. In the (37) meantime, I studied the artistic process and learned a lot about how art is created. I must admit that, even though I've always admired artists, I never had a full appreciation for their creative talent. I certainly don't have that ability, so I'm incredibly impressed when someone (38) instinctively knows how to create a work of such beauty.I was fairly nervous about seeing my finished portrait. The artist, likewise, was very nervous about showing it to me. In the end, I must admit that he did a(n) (39) sufficient job capturing my likeness. I'm not in love with the painting, but the artist should take (40) consolation in the fact that he did the best he could with his subject. I'm not a very attractive man, so it's almost impossible for my portrait to be beautiful and realistic.Unit 4 testPart I Section A1. Dr Reynolds was a(n) (31) eminent doctor from the big city. It seemed as if he was in the newspaper every day. My grandfather lived in a small (32) suburb outside the city. This was at a time when such neighbourhoods were still relatively new. People just couldn't understand why anyone would want to live so far from the city centre. However, the neighbourhood my grandfather lived in was growing every day. Many people couldn't afford to live in the city, and others were tired of the crowds. Cost and congestion comprised a real (33) curse of the cities, a problem that has only gotten worse with time. Large sections of the urban (34) workforce were moving out of the city to the smaller towns. Along with these people and their families, companies also started to relocate outside major cities. A great example of this was Dr Reynolds. It is impossible to overstate the (35) magnitude of the significance that Dr Reynolds' move had on my grandfather's town. Because he was so famous, there was obviously a considerable amount of (36) hype associated with his arrival. However, he quickly showed that he had the skills to back up his reputation. Dr Reynolds was not only a big, (37) brawny man who played football in his youth, but he also graduated at the top of his class in medical school.I'd be willing to (38) bet that this was one of the most exciting things happened in my grandfather's town. It must have been since he told the story so many times! Dr Reynolds' arrival (39) fundamentally changed the dynamics of the town. It was no longer "far away" from the city; it suddenly became "just outside" the city limits. Today, the world is changing much faster than can be measured by the arrival of a big-city doctor in a small town. Who knows, maybe (40) someday I'll have my own story to tell my own grandchildren!Unit 5 testPart I Section A1. Hollywood has repeatedly presented us with the image of (31) sophisticated criminals who have elaborate plans, extensive connections, and can sweet-talk anyone into doing whatever they want. The truth, however, bears no resemblance (32) whatsoever to this image. In movies, members of organized crime typically (33) intimidate innocent business owners to pay them "protection money"—which is actually a fee the citizens need to pay for protection from the very people they're paying. They are also known to "knock off," or kill, potential (34) competitors so that they remain the only "show" in town. The truth of these portrayals is (35) doubtful. Sure, some of these things happen, but they happen much less often than movies and television would lead us to believe. There is no doubt, however, that among members of organized crime, there is a considerable amount of (36) corruption. Money is their primary objective, and they are usually willing to do anything to get it. In today's day and age, though, they are more than likely to (37) refrain from violent crimes and pursue more white-collar crimes in order to achieve their goals. Crime "families" are now known to enter into (38) contracts with legitimate businesses and form (39) partnerships with honest companies. Don't misunderstand, they still demand complete (40) loyalty from "family" members, they still conduct illegal operations, and they are still criminals, but they have gotten much better at appearing clean and staying out of jail.Unit 6 testPart I Section A1. Albert Einstein is often considered a(n) genius because his scientific work was so groundbreaking and original.9. Can you imagine a(n) scenario in which we get out of this alive?10. I'm worried about my son; he wakes up every night with the same nightmare.11. The ability to compromise is one of the most important leadership qualities that I know.12. They cause people to lose their homes, their possessions, or even their lives. In a word, they can be downright (32) tragic. However, after such disasters strike is often a time of unbelievable (33) bravery and courage. Earthquakes and hurricanes may cause the worst things to happen, but they also bring out the best in people. In 2005, one of the worst hurricanes in recent memory formed over the Gulf of Mexico and moved over the southeastern United States. Known as Hurricane Katrina, it was devastating for many major cities, especially New Orleans, and the people who lived there. While some people managed to (34) evacuate and find safety outside of the city, many did not. Unfortunately, they were left (35) homeless when the floods filled the streets and drowned their houses. It is hard to use too many (36) superlative words to describe Katrina. It was one of the worst storms in history. It caused the deaths of more than a thousand people. It displaced tens of thousands more. Still, there was an enormous (37) turnout of people who wanted to help. These people certainly deserve our (38)admiration and respect. In the days following the storm, details of what happened were all over the news. There were hundreds of (39)correspondents from all over the world in New Orleans to cover the story. I could give you a little lesson on Japanese table manners if you'd like. Steve: Really? That would be great!Satoshi: Hmmmm. Let me see. One difference is that sometimes it's polite to make noise whenyou're eating, especially when you're eating noodles. It shows that you like the food.Steve: Really? That's interesting. In the United States you're not supposed to do that.Satoshi: Yeah, I know. OK, so here are some chopstick rules: it's rude to stick your chopsticks intoyour food. And you shouldn't point at anyone with your chopsticks.Steve: Oh, OK. I won't.Satoshi: And also, this isn't about table manners exactly, but you should know that it's rude to eator drink while walking down the street.Steve: Huh.Satoshi: Oh, and the most important thing you need to know is that you're not supposed to talkwhen you're eating dinner. Only parents are allowed to talk at the dinner table. Children are not allowed to speak.Steve: Wow! That's ... that's unusual!Satoshi: I'm just kidding! Steve!。

现代大学英语精读4 lesson13 soldier27s heart教学教材
• 3.Such is the life or death of an infantry soldier in France in the summer of 1944. These actions will be repeated many times...the scenery will change, from small fields separated by hedgerows to a flat landscape with windmills to a frost covered with snow. the soldiers will pass through villages. Now they are on the banks of a river, and rowing across in rubber boats. Finally they are among mountains.
• 6.I was in a hospital ward. It was not an army hospital, but King Park on Long Island. I suppose that was because after the war the veterans' hospitals were too crowded, and the rest had to be put in other places.
• 1.It begins in France in June of '44. Men are lying face down on the earth. The air is filled with sounds, shrieks that come out of the sky and terminate with an explosion. This may be a matter of seconds. If the sounds continue, the men will be seen scraping the surface of the earth with shovels and burying themselves in it until, like a species of animal, they vanish from sight.

Approximately 20 million gallons of herbicides were used in Vietnam War between 1962 and 1971 to remove unwanted plant life and leaves to expose Vietnamese guerrilla forces in forested areas and to destroy crops needed to feed Vietnamese troops.Agent Orange contains varying amounts of dioxin. Exposure to the defoliant (落叶剂) has been linked with chemical acne, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease, and soft-tissue sarcoma.Agent Orange caused serious damage to wildlife populations and therefore biodiversity, because it caused habitat loss, depleted food sources, and contaminated water. It contributed heavily to the destruction of more than half of the mangrove forests. The forests, which were once relied upon to help maintain water levels throughout the flood and dry season, have been decimated. Now flooding is a greater threat and occurs more often, and the hills are eroding quickly. This also stops the re-growth of the forests, and the lowland agricultural area has filled with sediment.Agent Orange also caused extremely serious harm to the Vietnamese people, because it was dumped at a concentration two to five times higher more than the recommended amount. Because Agent Orange contains dioxins, which have a half-life of more than two decades, it can take more than twenty years for its chemical components to decay. Currently in Vietnam, the effects of Agent Orange can be seen in over one million people, 100,000 of whom are children. Its contamination can be spread from mother to child either in vitro or after birth through breast milk. It has been linked to an increase in cancer, immune and neurological disorders, as well as hepatitis in both the Vietnamese and American veterans of the Vietnam War.Although birth defect rates are dropping as dioxins break down, more than thirty years after the war, the effects of Agent Orange are still present. It caused an irreversible ecological imbalance when it destroyed wildlife, forests, and soil, and tragically ruined the health of countless people.3.Anti-war VoicesThere were and are many bloody wars in the world.Language itself cannot display the sorrow, grief and disasters suffered by people of different nations.Iraq War is used only as an example in our hearing the voices from the world:Peace, No War.On 11 April, 2003, voices of opposition to the US-led war continue to be heard. In Jakarta, Indonesian President Megawati Sukarnoputri has praised the Iraqi people for resisting the U.S.-led attack. The leader of the world's most populour Muslim country says the Iraqi people are dedicated to fighting for their country and nation. In Madrid, thousands of Spanish students held a march on Thursday to protestagainst the invasion of Iraq by the US-led coalition and commemorate the Spanish journalists killed while covering the war. On the same day, major trade unions in the country held brief anti-war strikes. Two years later. The war and killing still linger. On April 27, 2005, in the United States, in an unprecedented display of solidarity between the anti-war and labor movements, members of Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU) No War marched to demand a fair contract for the workers and an end to the war in Iraq.SCSU had organized a day of protest on campus because Army recruiters were scheduled to table all day, and former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright had a high-profile speaking event that evening. Albright was responsible for many horrific foreign policy initiatives in the Clinton Administration, overseeing the disastrous economic sanctions on Iraq that killed more than 1 million Iraqis.SCSU No War declared that it would not accept a war criminal such as Albright on campus. The day got off to a positive start when the Army recruiters left campus after only 90 minutes, not talking to a single interested student. Anti-war activists, meanwhile, passed out pamphlets and fliers that slammed the war and argued with students to come out to protest Albright that evening. The world still faces difficult questions about war and peace.War is not the answer, for only love can conquer hatred.3.Peace Needing Right (Attitude Towards History)The sacrifice of millions of Chinese people, broke the back of Japan's armies during its invasion (1937—1945) and made sure China would remain a sovereign state. On the night of July 7, 1937, the Japanese army ignited the Lugouqiao (Marco Polo Bridge) Incident, signaling the start of its comprehensive invasion of China.Chinese troops threw themselves at Japanese defenses in a hail of bullets. However, with no prepared positions, had only collapsed houses, trees and the bodies of dead soldiers for shelter against Japanese bombing and the dense fire from their machine guns. Heavy casualties and loss of cities were inevitable.Although the Chinese fought bravely, they could not compete with the Japanese bombers, artillery and tanks. NanJing was next to be occupied by the Japanese on December 12, after which the invaders immediately set about massacring 300,000 Chinese civilians and prisoners of war. After the WuHan Campaign, Japanese troops became so exhausted that they could not launch massive attacks to conquer China's hinterland. This enabled guerrillas most led by the Communist Party of China to fight in the rear of occupied areas. The blood of Chinese soldiers and generals eventually led to China's great victory over Japan in 1945.Since 1995, thousands of forced laborers, "comfort women" and victims of either germ warfare or chemical weapons who were affected by the Japanese army'sinvasion, as well as their relatives, have been seeking compensation and apologies from the Japanese Government and related parties through legal proceedings. So far, most have been rejected by Japanese courts, which insisted that a 20-year statute of limitations has expired and the state held no responsibility for the wartime damages. Two Japanese lawyers Takahashi Tohru and Taizo Morita urged their government to seriously face up to the wartime compensation Chinese victims are demanding, saying its rejection of their appeals has no legal basis. Many demonstrators also denounced Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi's annual visits to Tokyo's Yasukuni Shrine, dedicated to the Japanese who died in the war including top war criminals. It is only proper that the Japanese Government take responsibility to compensate the victims and issue a formal apology. In 2005, the world commemorates the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II.Also in attendance was German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder. Schroeder was born just two months before German invasion began, and for many Germans, his presence marked a long-sought recognition that the post-war period is over, and Germany has resumed its place as a full and equal partner in the Western alliance. Most significant was Schroeder's decision not to go to a German cemetery, but instead lay a wreath in a Commonwealth cemetery in Ranville, where 322 German soldiers lay buried along with 2,000 soldiers from eight other allied nations.Hong Kong People march in 2005, condemning Japan for refusing to accept its crimes committed during its invasion of China and World War II.German people’s introspection towards history. The red cross represents their determination for peace.A member of Taiwan's Labor Party demonstrates outside the Interchange Association, in Taipei, protesting an amendment in Japanese history textbooks. Schroeder defended his decision, and his visit, saying in a French newspaper interview: "I don't understand the debate going on in Germany... For me, it's about commemorating all the dead who fell because of Hitler's cruelty."Japan is just the opposite. Many countries and organizations expressed concern over the resurgence of militarism in Japan. Others voiced their anger over Japan's latest textbook amendments to disown Tokyo's barbaric deeds during its invasion of China and World War II. In the world circle especially Asia, Japan was told to face up to history and admit to the tremendous suffering it inflicted on people in China, Asia and the rest of the world during World War II.People’s attitude towards history is to treat it as a mirror to aid them in looking to the future. Only a country that respects history, takes responsibility for its past, and wins over the trust of the people of the world can take greater responsibility in the international community and can bring peace.III.
