练习:What should be more French than an outdoor market on a sunny Sunday morning? The air is filled with vital fragrances from the fruits and vegetables piled high in the greengrocers creative layouts. A trace of the Atlantic blows off the shellfish on the fishmonger 's bed of ice. This, you think, is the very essence of France, until read those little signs that tell you the tomatoes (which are really pretty tasteless) come from Moroccan hothouses, the grapes from South Africa, and the kiwis from Chile. For generations, the French have prided themselves on their distinctiveness. Nothing has stood for France 's senseof exceptionalism more famously than its cooking. Gallic talent, taste and techniques have been exported all over the world. And therein lies part of the problem. From the Thames to Tokyo, non-French cooks have cracked the codes of the best French cuisine. Meanwhile, what was mediocre elsewhere has been imported. (Believe it or not, one restaurant associate with a famous Paris che f serves steak with a sauce that 's indistinguishable from the stuff on a Big Mac.) The result many tourists-as well as the French themselves-no longer see what's so special about French cooking. The decline goes well beyond recent surveys that show growing complaints about mediocre quality and high prices. More and more restaurants-owners say that government tax and economic policies are limiting their profits, and thereby hurting their capacity to invest and hire more staff. They have got stuck in the red tape for which France is infamous- not to mention regulations from Brussels that affect everything from sales taxes to the bacteria in the Brie cheese. Many warn that expanding the European Union to the east will hurt small French farmers, who remain the backbone of traditional cuisine-and, hence French identity:Unfortunately for the French, there are few reassuring answers to these questions.France 's problem isn 't the lack of creativity, but rather an unfavorable political environment for creativity. If you 're choked by bureaucracy and taxes, as so much of France is, "there is not much you can do," says Raymond Blanc, born in the Jura region of France and chef of the two-star hotel- restaurant Manoir aux Quat 'saisons. "I can open a business in England in five days. In France it would takethree months." The manoir aux Quat 'saisons, by the way, is in Oxford, Britain, France 's ancient rival. And, when itcomes to cooking, a future one as well.参考译文:还有什么比晴朗的周日上午的露天市场更具法国风情呢?空气中满是水果和蔬菜的香味,这些水果和蔬菜被商贩们摆放得极具创意。

Children were responsible for the vast majority of cases. 95% of objects removed from noses and 85% from ears. Every year, an averageof 1,218 nose and 2,479 ear removals took place between 2010 and 2016. According to England's hospital episodes statistics, children aged one to four, were the most likely to need help from doctors for a foreign object in their nose, five to nine-year-olds come to the hospital with something in their ears the most. Jewelry items accounted for up to 40% of cases in both the ears and noses of children, paper and plastic toys, where the items removed next most from noses, cotton beds and pencils were also found in ears. According to the study, the occurrence of foreign objects in children is generally attributed to curiosity. Children have an impulse toexplore their noses and ears. This results in the accidental entry of forei gn objects. Any ear, nose and throat surgeon has many weird stories about wonderful objects found in the noses and ears of children and adults. Batteries can pose a particular danger. In all cases, prevention is better than cure. This is why many toys contain warnings about small parts. Recognizing problems early and seeking medical attention is important.Question 16 to 18, are based on the passage you've just heard .16. What does England spend an annual 3 million pounds on?17. What do we learn from England's hospital episodes statistics?18. What is generally believed to account for children putting things in their ears or noses?Passage 2Today, I would like to talk to you about my charity rebicycle. But before that, let me introduce someone. This is Layla Rahimi. She was so scared when she first moved to New Zealand, that she struggled to leave the house and would spend days workingup the courage to walk to the supermarket for basic supplies. After a few months of being quite down and unhappy, she was invited to join a local bike club. At this time, rebicycle got involved and gave Layla a second-hand bicycle. Within weeks, her depression had begun to ease as she cycled. The bicycle totally changed her life, giving her hope and a true feeling of freedom. To date, rebicycle has donated more than 200 bikes to those in need. And there's now expanding bike riding lessons as demand source. With a bike, newcomers here can travel farther, but for almost no cost. The three hours a day, they used to spend walking to and from English language lessons has been reduced to just one hour. Our bike riding lessons are so successful that we are urgently looking for more volunteers, learning to ride a bike is almost always more difficult for an adult, and this can take days and weeks rather than hours. So if any of you have some free time during the weekend, please come join us at re bicycle and make a difference in someone's life.Questions 19 to 21 are based on the passage. You have just heard 19. What did rebicycle do to help Layla Rahimi?20. What is Rebicycle doing to help those in need?21. What do we learn from the passage about rebicycle?Passage 3Thanks to the international space station, we know quite a bit about the effects of low gravity on the human body, but NASA scientists want to learn more. To that end, they have been studying how other species deal with low gravity, specifically focusing on mice. The results are both interesting and humorous. The scientists first sent some mice and especially designed cage to the international space station. The cage allowed them tostudy the behavior of the mice remotely from earth via video. As you'll notice in the video, the mice definitely seem uncomfortable at the beginning of the experiment. They move around clumsily, drifting within the small confines of the cage, and do their best to figure out which way is up.But without success, however, it's not long before the mice begin to catch on. They adapt remarkably well to their new environment and even use the lack of gravity to their advantage as they push themselves around the cage. That's when things really get wild. The 11th day of the experiment shows the mice are not just dealing with the gravity change, but actually seem to be enjoying it. Several of the mice are observed running around the cage walls. The scientist wanted to see whether the mice would continue doing the same kinds of activities they were observed doing on earth. The study showed thatthe mice kept much of the routines intact, including cleaning themselves and eating when hungry.22 to 25 are based on the paths that you have just heard question.22. What do NASA scientists want to learn about?23. What does the passage say about the mice at the beginning of the experiment?24. What was observed about the mice on the 11th day of the experiment?25. What did the scientists find about the mice from the experiment?二、四级选词填空部分:When my son completes a task, I can't hlep but praise him.26. B. constant27. G. negative28. K. repeatedly29. L. rewarded30. New applications on transportation emerge abundantly, contributing to the fact that people* s lifestyle has been changed as well. The changes in the way of transportation can be listed as follows. First of all, with the development of technology, the priceof transportation is much cheaper than before. Besides, highspeed railways gradually replace the oldfashioned green trains, which can tremendously improve travelers’ comfort during the journey and shorten the time spent on the way. From my perspective, the changes in the way of transportation mainly lie in the good respects. 2020年公共英语四级复习资料试题2
2020年公共英语四级复习资料试题2第六部份:Dialogues /monologues:1、I’m in a hurry.翻译为:我得赶紧。
注意的词语:“in a hurry”指匆忙,有时用作口语也表示轻易地做好某件事情。
2、 These days the most sought-after tables are hidden away, several floors above ground, in the city’s high-rise apartments, which are run by chefs out of their own homes or from rented spaces……翻译为:当前,很多广受欢迎的餐馆总是藏匿在公寓大厦地面上方的楼层,就在厨师们自家门口或是租的空地外面营业。
3、 Merely requesting a reservation can be as difficultas getting one.翻译为:哪怕是仅仅要求预定(房间)都有可能象真要得到它一样那么难。
4、 Exclusively is the main attraction for customers in a city that is still obsessed with status.翻译为:独有性(专用权)是吸引城市消费者的主要因素,因为人们还是会被身份地位(带来的虚荣感)所迷惑的。
5、I can’t make up my mind about to have for dessert.注意的词语:make up one’s mind 下决心、作决定。
翻译为:餐后吃什么甜点,我还没能做出决定。
练习:The ladies were puzzled. Cheryl Spangler, Valeria Borunda Jameson and Susan Puckett, three university-admissions workers on a training wisit to Florence, Kentucky, had walkedinto a local barbecue joint called Chung Kiwha. But insteadof sauce-covered mutton served up from the kitchen, they sawa buffet of uncooked meats and vegetables. Instead of knives and forks, they were given large scissors, chopsticks andmetal tongs. No candle flickered at their table, but a bucket of fiery wood charcoal hissed in the tabletop grill pit. Chung Kiwha served barbecue, all right-cook-it-your-self Korean barbecue. "I didn’t realize there were restaurantslike this," marveled Spangler to her friends, who hail from Knoxville, Tennessee, and I worked in restaurants for 20 years. The secret is out, thanks to the growing popularity of restaurants where the customer is the chef. Long a staple of immigrant communities in big cities, restaurants where diners chop, grill, boil, or dip their dip their food are hot in the American heartland. St.Paul, Minnesota, has Thai hot-pot cooking. Indianapolis, Indiana, has Japanese shabu-shabu (another type of hot pot). A pizzeria in Las Vegas lets customers roll the dough. Why would people bother going out to cook their own meal? "Americans want control," says Hudson Riehle, senior vice president of research for the National Restaurant Association. "The cook-it-your-self experience embodies the Americanvalues of freedom of choice and independence." With families spending 46% of their food budget on meals outside the home, they miss the cooking experience-sort of. "Psychologically, people want to be a little involved," says Pamela Parseghian, executive food editor at Nation’s Restaurant News. Not every diner, however, embraces the experience.Dragged in by enthusiastic wives, "men often sit with their arms crossed……that is, until we fill them up with good wine," says Will Layfield, owner of the Melting Pot in Westwood, New Jersey. At the Vinoklet, diner Grey Schafer says, "I don’t cook at home, and if I’m going to pay good money, I want someone to do the cooking for me." What’s more, do-it-your-self dining isn’t cheap. At th e minturn country Club in Minturn, Colorado, Kobe beef costs $49.95-uncooked. Still, restaurant-owners insist that the customer knows best. "Who knows what to them is rare?" says Mikulic, owner of Vinoklet. "This way, if they screw it up, I get no complaints." Back at Chung Kiwha in Florence, diner Puckett sees it this way:"We don’t have to clean up, do we?."参考译文:这些女士有些迷惑不解。

Eachstatement contains information given in one of the paragraphs. Identify the paragraphfrom which the information is derived. You may choose a paragraph more than once. Each paragraph is marked with a letter.Answer the questions by marking thecorresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2.The Secret to Raising Smart KidsA) I first began to investigate the basis of human motivation--and how people persevere aftersetbacks--as a psychology graduate student at Yale University in the 1960s. Animal experiments bypsychologists at the University of Pennsylvania had shown that after repeated failures, most animalsconclude that a situation is hopeless and beyond their control. After such an experience an animaloften remains passive even when it can effect change--a state they called learned helplessness.B) People can learn to be helpless, too. Why do some students give up when they encounter difficulty, whereas others who are no more skilled continue to strive and learn? One answer, I soondiscovered, lay in people's beliefs about why they had failed.C) In particular, attributing poor performance to a lack of ability depresses motivation more than doesthe belief that lack of effort is to blame. When I told a group of school children who displayedhelpless behavior that a lack of effort led to their mistakes in math, they learned to keep tryingwhen the problems got tough. Another group of helpless children who were simply rewarded fortheir success on easier problems did not improve their ability to solve hard math problems. Theseexperiments indicated that a focus on effort can help resolve helplessness and generate success.D) Later, I developed a broader theory of what separates the two general classes of learners--helplessversus mastery-oriented. I realized these different types of students not only explain their failuresdifferently, but they also hold different "theories" of intelligence. The helpless ones believeintelligence is a fixed characteristic: you have only a certain amount, and that's that. I call this a"fixed mind-set (思维模式). " Mistakes crack their self-confidence because they attribute errors toa lack of ability, which they feel powerless to change. They avoid challenges because challengesmake mistakes more likely. The mastery-oriented children, on theother hand, think intelligence isnot fixed and can be developed through education and hard work. Such children believe challengesare energizing rather than intimidating (令人生畏); they offer opportunities to learn. Studentswith such a growth mind-set were destined (注定) for greater academic success and were quitelikely to outperform their counterparts.E) We validated these expectations in a study in which two other psychologists and I monitored 373students for two years during the transition to junior high school, when the work gets more difficultand the grading more strict, to determine how their mind-sets might affect their math grades. At thebeginning of seventh grade, we assessed the students' mind-sets by asking them to agree or disagreewith statements such as "Your intelligence is something very basic about you that you can't reallychange. " We then assessed their beliefs about other aspects of learning and looked to see whathappened to their grades.F) As predicted, the students with a growth mind-set felt that learning was a more important goal thangetting good grades. In addition, they held hard work in high regard. They understood that evengeniuses have to work hard. Confronted by a setback such as a disappointing test grade, studentswith a growth mind-set said they would study harder or try a different strategy. The students whoheld a fixed mind-set, however, were concerned about looking smart with less regard for learning. They had negative views of effort, believing that having to work hard was a sign of low ability. They thought that a person with talent or intelligence did not need to work hard to do well.Attributing a bad grade to their own lack of ability, those with a fixed mind-set said that they wouldstudy less in the future, try never to take that subject again and consider cheating on future tests.G) Such different outlooks had a dramatic impact on performance. At the start of junior high, the mathachievement test scores of the students with a growth mind-set were comparable to those ofstudents who displayed a fixed mind-set. But as the work became more difficult, the students witha growth mind-set showed greater persistence. As a result, their math grades overtook those of theother students by the end of the first semester--and the gap between the two groups continued towiden during the two years we followed them.H) A fixed mind-set can also hinder communication and progress in the workplace and discourage orignore constructive criticism and advice. Research shows that managers who have a fixed mind-setare less likely to seek or welcome feedback from their employees than are managers with a growthmind-set.I) How do we transmit a growth mind-set to our children? One way is by telling stories aboutachievements that result from hard work. For instance, talking about mathematical geniuses whowere more or less born that way puts students in a fixedmind-set, but descriptions of greatmathematicians who fell in love with math and developed amazing skills produce a growth mind-set.J) In addition, parents and teachers can help children by providing explicit instruction regarding themind as a learning machine. I designed an eight-session workshop for 91 students whose mathgrades were declining in their first year of junior high.Forty-eight of the students receivedinstruction in study skills only, whereas the others attended a combination of study skills sessionsand classes in which they learned about the growth mind-set and how to apply it to schoolwork. Inthe growth mind-set classes, students read and discussed an article entitled "You Can Grow YourBrain. " They were taught that the brain is like a muscle that gets stronger with use and thatlearning prompts the brain to grow new connections. From such instruction, many students beganto see themselves as agents of their own brain development. Despite being unaware that there weretwo types of instruction, teachers reported significant motivational changes in 27% of the childrenin the growth mind-set workshop as compared with only 9% of students in the control group.K) Research is converging (汇聚) on the conclusion that great accomplishment and even genius istypically the result of years of passion and dedication and not something that flows naturally from agift.36. The author's experiment shows that students with a fixed mind-set believe having to work hard is an indication of low ability.37. Focusing on effort is effective in helping children overcome frustration and achieve success.38. We can cultivate a growth mind-set in children by telling success stories that emphasize hard work and love of learning.39. Students' belief about the cause of their failure explains their attitude toward setbacks.40. In the author's experiment, students with a growth mind-set showed greater perseverance in solving difficult math problems.41. The author conducted an experiment to find out about the influence of students' mind-sets on math learning.42. After failing again and again, most animals give up hope.43. Informing students about the brain as a learning machine is a good strategy to enhance their motivation for learning.44. People with a fixed mind-set believe that one's intelligence is unchangeable.45. In the workplace, feedback may not be so welcome to managers with a fixed mind-set.Section CDirections: There are 2 passages in this section. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on AnswerSheet 2 with a single line through the centre.Passage OneQuestions 46 to 50 are based on the following passage."Sugar, alcohol and tobacco," economist Adam Smith once wrote," are commodities which arenowhere necessaries of life, which have become objects of almost universal consumption, and whichare, therefore, extremely popular subjects of taxation. "Two and a haft centuries on, most countries impose some sort of tax on alcohol and tobacco. Withsurging obesity levels putting increasing strain on public health systems, governments around the worldhave begun to toy with the idea of taxing sugar as well.Whether such taxes work is a matter of debate. A preliminary review of Mexico's taxation found afall in purchases of taxed drinks as well as a rise in sales of untaxed and healthier drinks. By contrast,a Danish tax on foods high in fats was abandoned a year after its introduction, amid claims thatconsumers were avoiding it by crossing the border to Germany to satisfy their desire for cheaper, fattierfare. The food industry has, in general, been firmly opposed to such direct government action.Nonetheless, the renewed focus on waistlines means that industry groups are under pressure todemonstrate their products are healthy as well as tasty.Over the past three decades, the industry has made some efforts to improve the quality of itsofferings. For example, some drink manufacturers have cut the amount of sugar in their beverages. Many of the reductions over the past 30 years have been achieved either by reducing the amount ofsugar, salt or fat in a product, or by finding an alternative ingredient. More recently, however, somecompanies have been investing money in a more ambitious undertaking: learning how to adjust thefundamental make-up of the food they sell. For example, having salt on the outside, but none on theinside, reduces the salt content without changing the taste. While reformulating recipes ( 配方) is one way to improve public health, it should be part of amulti-sided approach. The key is to remember that there is not just one solution. To deal with obesity,a mixture of approaches--including reformulation, taxation and adjusting portion sizes--will beneeded. There is no silver bullet.46. What did Adam Smith say about sugar, alcohol and .tobacco?A. They were profitable to manufacture.B. They were in ever-increasing demand.C. They were subject to taxation almost everywhere.D. They were no longer considered necessities of life.47. Why have many countries started to consider taxing sugar?A. The practice of taxing alcohol and tobacco has proved both popular and profitable.D. The sugar industry is overtaking alcohol and tobacco business in generating profits.48. What do we learn about Danish taxation on fat-rich foods?A. It did not work out as well as was expected.B. It gave rise to a lot of problems on the border.C. It could not succeed without German cooperation.D. It met with firm opposition from the food industry.49. What is the more recent effort by food companies to make foods and drinks both healthy and tasty?A. Replacing sugar or salt with alternative ingredients.B. Setting a limit on the amount of sugar or salt in their products.C. Investing in research to find ways to adapt to consumers' needs.D. Adjusting the physical composition of their products.50. There is no hope of success without public cooperation.C. There is no hurry in finding ways to solve the obesity problem.D. There is no effective way to reduce people's sugar consumption.Passage TwoQuestions 51 to 55 are based on the following passage. You may have heard some of the fashion industry horror stories: models eating tissues or cottonballs to hold off hunger, and models collapsing from hunger-induced heart attacks just seconds afterthey step off the runway. Excessively skinny models have been a point of controversy for decades, and two researchers saya model's body mass should be a workplace health and safety issue. In an editorial released Monday inthe American Journal of Public Health, Katherine Record and Bryn Austin made their case forgovernment regulation of the fashion industry. The average international runway model has a body mass index (BMI) under 16--low enough toindicate starvation by the World Health Organization's standard. And Record and Austin are worried notjust about the models themselves, but about thevast number of girls and women their images influence."Especially girls and teens," says Record. "Seventy percent of girls aged 10 to 18 report that theydefine perfect body image based on what they see in magazines. " That's especially worrying, she says, given that anorexia (厌食症) results in more deaths than does any other mental illness, according tothe National Institute of Mental Health. It's commonly known that certain diseases are linked with occupations like lung disease in coalminers. Professional fashion models are particularly vulnerable to eating disorders resulting fromoccupational demands to maintain extreme thinness. Record's suggestion is to prohibit agents from hiring models with a BMI below 18.In April, France passed a law setting lower limits for a model's weight. Agents and fashion houseswho hire models with a BMI under 18 could pay $ 82,000 in fines and spend up to 6 months in jail.Regulating the fashion industry in the United States won't be easy, Record says. But with the new rulesin France, U.S. support could make a difference. "A designer can't survive without participating inParis Fashion Week", she says, adding," Our argument is that the same would be true of New YorkFashion Week. "51. What do Record and Austin say about fashion models' body mass?A. It has caused needless controversy.B. It is but a matter of personal taste.C. It is the focus of the modeling business.D. It affects models' health and safety.52. What are Record and Austin advocating in the Monday editorial?A. A change in the public's view of female beauty.B. Government legislation about models' weight.C. Elimination of forced weight loss by models.D. Prohibition of models eating non-food stuff.53. Why are Record and Austin especially worried about the low body mass index of models?A. It contributes to many mental illnesses.B. It defines the future of the fashion industry.C. It has great influence on numerous girls and women.D. It keeps many otherwise qualified women off the runway.54. What do we learn about France's fashion industry?A. It has difficulty hiring models.B. It has now a new law to follow.C. It allows girls under 18 on the runway.D. It has overtaken that of the United States.55. What does Record expect of New York Fashion Week?A. It will create a completely new set of rules.B. It will do better than Paris Fashion Week.C. It will differ from Paris Fashion Week.D. It will have models with a higher BMI.Part ⅣTranslation( 30 minutes )Directions:For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to translate a passage from Chinese intoEnglish. Scientist at University College London used memory and fluency tests on the same group of people 6 years apart. They found that those who watched on average less than 3 hours television a day showed a decline ever round 4 to 5 percent, while those who tended to watch more than 3 hours a day declined by an average of 8 to 10 percent. The research team say they believe the alert but passive nature of television watching maybe creating stress on the mind, which contributes to memory decline. Older people who watch more television are also less likely to undertake activities knowing to preserve mental functioning, such as reading or interactive screen base pursuits, such as using the internet or playing video games. The researchers say that television viewing maybe a risk factor for all Alzheimer's disease, but more researches needed to establish a link. Those were the wordsuttered by pioneering British scientist Rosalind Franklin, who firmly believed that thepursuit of science should be (26)_ _to all.As a woman working in the first half of the 20th century. Franklin's contributions tosome of the greatest scientific discoveries of our time ·including the structure of DNA·were sadly (27)_ in her lifetime. One of my proudest moments in my role asuniversities and scienceminister was being able to go some way to redress this injusticelast month, by unveiling thenew Mars rover named after this brilliant British scientist.Today, on International Women's Day, it is only right that we recognise the importantwork of female scientists like Franklin and scck to honour her memory by inspiringmore women andgirls to follow in her footsteps.More than 60 years after Franklin's death, we are (28)__ living in a different world, where women play an important part in every echelon of our society = not least inscience, innovation, higher education and research.UK universities are world leaders when it comes to advancing and (29)__ genderequality. The Athena SWAN charter, initially established to improve the representationof women inscientific disciplines in higher education, now has 145 members. It hasalso expanded to promote gender equality in multiple disciplines - including the arts, social sciences, humanities, business and law.In the past decade, we have seen a (30)__ increase in England in the number of womenaccepted on to full-time undergraduate degrees in science, technology, engineering andmaths (Stem subjects). And in the last academic year, women (31)_ for more thanhalf ofall Stem postgraduates at UK universities. The government is taking furthersteps to improve women's representation in science and has today awarded nineinspiring women f50,000 to develop inventions to tackle the challenges and seize theopportunities we face as a socicty. From new materials to cut down on plastics pollutionto special devices to improve postureand comfort for wheelchair users, these womenare at the forefront of creating the new technology for tomorrow. This is significant progress, but access to higher education is only half of the equation.Tohave real equality in the sector, we need to ensure talented women are able toprogress intothe academic and leadership roles they desire, and get the remunerationthey deserve.Data shows us the (32)_ to success gets harder for women to climb the further up theygo. I Although women make up the majority of undergraduates in our universities, justunder halfof academic staff are female. At (33)_ levels, only a quarter of professorsare women, andblack women make up less than 2% of all female academic staff.I welcome the introduction of pro-active strategies like the new initiative at theUniversity of Leicester, which I am visiting today, to increase the number of femaleprofessors by 1.5% each year, with the overall goal of having 30% professorships heldby women by 2020.There are also stark differences in pay across grades. The gender pay gap based onmedian salaries across the sector in 2016-I7 was 13.7%, (34)_ there is still some wayto go to ensure women are rising through the ranks to higher grade positions and beingpaid(35)_.When it comes to women in senior leadership positions, the proportion of femalevice chancellors has thankfully risen . from 22% in 2016 to 29% in 2018. Yet this isstill far from representative. One way of ensuring cquality permcates through all levels of a university is byenhancing the diversity of governing bodies, includingPart I WritingDirections: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write an essay on the use of translation apps. You can start your essay with the sentence “The use of translation apps is becoming increasingly popular.”You should write at least 120 words but no more than 180 words.参考范文The use of translation apps is becoming increasingly popular. They play a critical role in removing the language barrier in this globalized era. These technology tools are especially helpful for both leisure and business travelers. They allow independent tourists to navigate through everything from communicating with taxi drivers to buying souvenirs at market stalls. Some even provide phrase books and encourage users to learn common expressions before their trips so that, for example, they know how to ask a flight attendant for help or understand what a customs officer says. In addition, app developers are striving to introduce their products into the commercial world. In terms of accuracy, admittedly, translation apps are so far no match for professional interpreters, who are indispensable to an international business conference. But they are more than adequate to meet the demand for casual conversations between business partners. With ever-increasing databases of written and spoken texts, there is a bright prospect that such software programs will be applied into broader fields. A growing number of people, in turn, will enjoy the fruits of this technological advance.Part II Listening Comprehension(暂缺选项和答案)Section ANews Report OneGood morning! In today’s headlines, Scotland’s transport minister has warned of potentially "extreme" weather conditions as heavy snow is forecast across the country later this week. Orange warnings are in force for many areas for Wednesday and Thursday. The transport minister advised people in parts of Scotland covered by the orange alert to avoid travel on Wednesday. This is what he said to us: “The orange warning may be raised to red in some areas. That is a warning for snow that has never been seen since the modern system came into place in Scotland.”The orange warning has been extended until 6 p.m. on Thursday. Trains, planes and ferries are also likely to be affected, with a wind chill that could see parts of Britain feeling as cold as -15℃. The head of road policing said, “I would urge drivers to take extra care on the roads for their journeys. Drivers should make sure they are prepared for their journey with warm clothing, food and drink, sufficient fuel and a charged mobile phone. There could be significant traffic delays, so please start to plan your journey now and consider if you really need to travel when conditions are this poor.”Q1: What were people in parts of Scotland advised to do?Q2: What did the head of road policing urge drivers to do?News Report TwoRomania's wetlands are coming back to life thanks to help from local communities, the World Wildlife Fund, and funding from the European Union.Roughly 2,224 acres of the picturesque Danube Delta –home to 300 species of birds –have filled with wildlife. Loneliness is a horrible feeling. However, you don’t have to actually be alone to feel that way. Many times, I’ve felt lonely when surrounded by a big group of people. In contrast, being alone can actually be a blessing, particularly, when you’ve actively chosen it.In my experience, being bored and alone is dangerous and can easily lead to the feeling of loneliness. The trick is to be active. Get outside, stretch your legs, do something cultural, buy yourself something tasty to eat or something pretty to wear. You don’t have to take anyone else into consideration and can do whatever you please.Spending time alone also allows you to more efficiently take care of problems. And then, when it’s time to be social and meet up with your friends, you will be fully there, because you won’thave too much other stuff floating around in your mind. Having been alone for a bit, you will also appreciate your friends’company more and chances are your time spent together will be more worthwhile.Q16: What does the speaker say about being alone?Q17: What does the speaker say helps reduce one’s feeling of loneliness?Q18: What is an advantage of spending one’s time alone?Passage TwoWhenWhen II turnedturned twelvetwelve,, II workedworked summerssummers atat mymy father’sfather’s smallsmall brickbrick--cleaningcleaning business.business. As a typical application, the use of PPT in class is becoming increasingly popular. As we know, every coin has two sides. On one hand, the use of PPT in class expands knowledge and makes teaching easy, wonderful and vivid. In place of complex explanation output by teachers, show of text, sound, image and video in PPT stimulates students’ interests and help them understand intuitively especially in face of abstract concepts. Lesson study becomes more effective and interesting for students. On the other hand, relying too much on PPT weakens teachers’ ability. Many teachers read PPT directly lacking communications with students. Besides, some design of PPT is overwhelming which distracts students’ attention. As far as I am concerned, PPT is just a kind of teaching assistant. Teachers is expected to use it appropriately rather than pursuit its effects excessively.【选词填空第2套】26.I normal27.E definitely28.D considerable29.J possibly30.B argued31.K proposition32.N tend33.C avoid34.F extreme35.G inaction【信息匹配第2套】Why are Asian Americans Missing from out textbook?36. One of my proudest moments in my role asuniversities and science minister was being able to go some way to redress this injusticelast month, by unveiling the new Mars rover named after this billant British scientist.Today, on International Women’s Day, it is only right that we recognise the importantwork of female scientists like Franklin and seek to honour her memory by inspiringmore women and girls to follow in her footsteps.More than 60 years after Franklin’s death, we are (28)_ _ living in a different world, where women play an important part in every echelon of our society = not least inscience, innovation, higher education and research.UK universities are world leaders when it comes to advancing and (29)_ _ genderequality. The Athena SWAN charter, initially established to improve the representationof women in scientific disciplines in higher education, now has I45 members. What you may not realize, however, is that the learning processactually continues-in your dreams. It might sound like science fiction, but researchers are increasingly focusing onthe relationship between the knowledge and skills our brains absorb during the day and the fragmented, often bizarre imaginings they generate at night. Scientists have foundthat dreaming about a task we’ve learned is associated with improved performance inthat activity (suggesting that there’s some truth to the popular notion that we’re "gettinga foreign language once we begin dreaming in it). What’s more, researchers are comingto recognize that dreaming is an essential part of understanding, organizing andretaining what we learn-and that dreams may even hold out the possibility of directingour learning as we doze. While we sleep, research indicates, the brain replays the patterns of activity itexperienced during waking hours, allowing us to enter what one psychologist calls aneural (神经的) virtual reality. A vivid example of such reenactment can be seen in thisvideo, made as part of a 2011 study by researchers in the Sleep Disorders Unit at Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital in Paris. They taught a series of dance moves to a group of patient swith conditions like sleepwalking, in which the sleeper engages in the kind of physicalmovement that is normally inhibited during slumber. They thenvideotaped the subjectsas they slept. Lying in bed, eyes closed, the woman on the tape does a faithful renditionof the dance moves she learned carlier-the first direct and unambiguous demonstrationof overt behavioral replay of a recently leamed skill during human sleep," writes leadauthor Delphine Qudiette.Of course, most of us are not quite so energetic during sleep-but our brains arebusy nonetheless. While our bodies are at rest, scientists theorize, our brains are extracting what’s important from the information and events we’ve recentlyencountered, then integrating that data into the vast store of what we already know-perhaps explaining why dreams are such an odd mixture of fresh experiences and oldmemories. A dream about something we’ve just learned seems to be a sign that the newknowledge has been processed ffetively. In a 2010 study published in the journalCurrent Biology, researchers at Harvard Medical School reported that college studentswho dreamed about a computer maze task they had learned showed a 10-fold improvement in their ability to navigate the maze compared to participants who did notdream about the task.Robert Stickgold, one of the Harvard researchers, suggests that studying rightbefore bedtime or taking a nap following a study session in the afternoon might increasethe odds of dreaming about the material. But some scientists are pushing the notion ofenhancing learning throughdreaming even further, asking sleepers to mentally practiceskills while they slumber. In a pilot study published in The Sport Psychologist journalin 2010, University of Bern psychologist Daniel Erlacher instructed participants todream about tossing coins into a cup. Those who successfully drcamed about the taskshowed significant improvement in their real-life coin-tossing abilities. Experimentslike Erlacher’s raise the possibility that we could train ourselves to cultivate skills whilewe slumber. Think about that as your head hits the pillow tonight.Brilliant readers, do you ever have dreams about what you were studying 0working on while you you werc awake?
