In the idiom "A startled bird that fears the bow," a bird that has been frightened by an arrow becomes so terrified that it is startled by the mere twang of a bowstring. This idiom is often used to describe someone who is overly cautious or jumpy due to a traumatic experience. The story behind this idiom is a cautionary tale about the dangers of being too fearful. In ancient China, there was a skilled archer named Yang Youji. One day, he was practicing his archery skills in the forest when he accidentally shot and killed a bird. The loud noise of the arrow and the sight of the dead bird startled another bird in the forest, which flew away in fear. From that day on, the startled bird became terrified of any sound that resembled the twang of a bowstring. Even the slightest noise would cause it to fly away in panic. Thisstory teaches us that it is important to be cautious and aware of our surroundings, but we should not let fearcontrol our lives.
A civilian named Shentu Dun in Luoyang obtained an unearthed tripod of the Han Dynasty from Shenchuan, Chang'an.On the tripod, the crisscross designs of clouds and ancient hornless dragons were bright and clear. Lu Sheng, his neighbour on the west, took a fancy to it instantly. He asked a coppersmith to cast a tripod in imitation, soaked and dyed it with a strange decoction, dug a pit and buried it underground. After three years, he dug it out. Owing to the decoction and corrosion of the earth, thecopper surface of the tripod changed and looked very much like Shentu Dun's genuine tripod. One day, Lu Sheng presented this fake tripod to an influential official, who was so pleased as if he had got a treasure that he invited guests to a banquet to appreciate it together. At the time, Shentu Dun was also present. He knew in his heart that Lu Sheng's tripod was a fake. He said: "I also have a tripod of about the same shape as this one. But I don't know which one is genuine."The influential official asked him to fetch it at once. After he examined it for a long time, he said: "This one is not genuine."The guests also chimed in and said one after another: "It is indeed not genuine."Shentu Dun was quite perturbed and argued on just grounds, but the others rallied together to attack him, ridiculed and even insulted him, so he said no more. When he returned home, he sighed: "I didn't know until today the power of authority, which can confound right with wrong and pass off the fake as the real thing."

The Fox and the GrapesOne hot summer’s day a certain Fox saw a juicy bunch of Grapes hanging from a vine.It certainly was very hot, and the Fox was thirsty for something to drink. “These Grapes are just what I need to quench my thirst! ” said the Fox.But the vine on which the Grapes hung was too high for him to reach even with his longest stretch. So he decided to jump.Drawing back a few paces, he ran towards the vine and took a great big leap, but missed the Grapes.Turing around, he jumped again. This time too, with no success. The Fox tried to jump for the Grapes again and again and yet again and again, in vain.Since he could not reach the delicious-looking Grapes, the Fox finally concluded, “These Grapes must be sour! ”and walked away with his nose in the air, through hotter and even thirstier than before!

There was an archer named Geng Ying in the Stateof W ei.
He went sightseeing with the King of Wei at Jingtai.
At that time a bird was circling around in the sky, uttering sad and shrill cries now and then.
The King of Wei looked up at it for a while and said to G eng Ying:
"Do you see that bird? Can you shoot it down?"
"I can shoot it down without using an arrow,"Geng Ying said.
”
After a while, the bird flew near.
Geng Ying pulled his bow to the full, plucked the bowstri ng,and at the sound the bird fell tothe ground before the ir feet.
The King of Wei said in surprise:
"You can shoot down a bird without an arrow.Your skill i narchery is really wonderful."
Geng Ying said:
"Your Majesty, this is not due to my good skill, but becau se this is a bird of badluck.
You can hear how sadly and shrilly it wailed, and see ho w tiredly it flew.
It was already wounded, and for a long time could not fin d its companion.
Therefore it couldn't stand the least fright.
As soon as I twanged my bow,it thought it had been sh ot and fell down of its own accord from the sky.
What a pitiful bird frightened by the mere twang of a bow string!"
Once upon a time, there was a bird-catcher who likedto cast a net to catch birds.
One day, seeing that birds would fly past, heimmediately cast his net and waited patiently.
After a while,a bird came as expected, and was caught by him at once.
The bird-catcher drew in the net and found that the bird had been caught in one mesh.
He thought that, such being the case, one mesh would b e enough.
Therefore,he especially made a net with only one mesh, cast it in the same place and waited inhigh spirits.
However,he never caught another bird thereafter.
