It has taken Tesla the best part of a decade to make it into the black, but Musk firmly believes that, as technologies improve, and prices come down, consumers will embrace his green machines. Although Tesla grabbed most of the headlines in the period after he sold PayPal, Musk had actually set up another major enterprise in 2002. With the establishment of Space Exploration Technologies Corporation (SpaceX), Musk revealed to the world that he was setting his sights much higher. In May 2012, SpaceX made history when it became the first privately owned company to successfully dock a spacecraft with the International Space Station (ISS). SpaceX sent one of its Dragon capsules up to the ISS with a 400-kilogram payload consisting of food and clothing for the six-man team of astronauts that mans the station. Two years later, he was underwater again for the documentary Aliens of the Deep, which examined some of the incredible creatures that lurk in the Atlan tic Ocean. Exploring the ocean’s depths is clearly something of an obsession for the Canadian filmmaker. In 2012, Cameron took things a stage further, as he descended to the very bottom of the sea alone in a “vertical torpedo.” As part of a National Geogr aphic expedition, Cameron became the first man to journey to the bottom of the Mariana Trench in the Pacific Ocean, the deepest point of the world’s oceans. The 11-kilometer descent took two hours and 36 minutes, while the return journey back to the surfac e was a lot quicker at roughly 70 minutes. Using a variety of tools and technology, Cameron’s vehicle – a one-man submarine called the Deepsea Challenger – crawled along the seabed as the director-turned-explorer attempted to collect samples and shoot video footage.47. It is a pitythe same cannot be said for the great fairy hoax of theearly 20th century. This hoax may cause you to burstwith laughter now, but at the time many believers defended its credibility. This very well-planned hoax would continue to fool people for years to come!Having appeared throughout Western cultures since the middle ages, the legend of fairies is widespread. Arguably the most famous of fairy hoaxes is the Cottingley Fairies. A series of photographs were taken by Elsie Wright and Frances Griffiths who happen to be youngcousins living in the north of England. The photographs depict the two girls with the supposed mythological creatures. Taken in 1917, the photos divided their growing audience, including the parents of Elsie and Frances.Of course many suspected they were fakes, but others including Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, author of the Sherlock Holmes mysteries, saw them as authentic evidence of the existence of these spirits. It was not until 1981 that Wright and Griffiths finally admitted the photos were actually designed using cardboard cut-outs of the tiny winged creatures. If fact, Wright was an accomplished artist and photo technician so it is difficult in a way to call this hoax a lame attempt to fool people. After all, they managed to fool half the world, didn’t they?46. When did the fairy hoax originally take place?a. the late 20th centuryb. 1981c. the early 20th centuryd. the middles ages47. He enjoyed unparalleled successes followed by major failures. At the beginning of the decade, he won seven Oscars for his epic western, Dances with Wolves, which he starred in and directed. Five years later came Waterworld. Set in an age when the polar ice caps have melted and most of the world is submerged, this fantasy film was the most expensive movie ever made at the time. The odd thing about Waterworld is that, while it is often cited as a film that lost millions of dollars, it actually turned a profit – eventually. Still, it was nominated for four Golden Raspberries – the awards for bad movies – and won two. Two years later, in 1997, Costner did even better (or, rather, worse) by winning a record five Razzies for The Postman.Cat-astrophic Failureinto this category. Stepping up to accept her Razzie for worst actress in 2005, Halle Barry thanked the film company for putting her in an appalling movie. “It was just what my career needed,” she added, sarcastically. Berry’s joke was understandable – she had won the Oscar for best actress just four years earlier.43. Without looking, you probably don’t have a clue, right? The battery brand Energizer found out the hard way that a catchy ad campaign doesn’t necessarily translate into a boost to sales when it failed to capitalize on a hugely popular series of commercials starting in the 1980s. At the time, the leading brand was Duracell, which had used a drum-playing rabbit called the Duracell Bunny as its mascot since the early 1970s. Seeing a chance to cash in on the back of this character, Energizer created its own Energizer Bunny which was shown outlasting Duracell’s bunny. There was not much to differentiate Energizer’s rabbit from Duracell’s (they gave him a pair of shades to make him look cooler), but the commercials were a hit with consumers, due in part to the light-hearted mocking of a competitor. The problem was, while everyone recognized the bunny and the campaign, hardly anyone knew which company was behind it. In fact, a study showed that 40 percent of people thought the Energizer ads were for Duracell. Furthermore, despite the popularity of the commercials, Energizer sales actually dropped.47. According to the excerpt what prompted Energizer to create the ads?a. It wanted to create a unique bunny.c. It wanted to make fun of its competitor.d. It wanted to create an international campaign.48. What problem or problems did Energizer encounter?a. People loved the ads but hated the product.b. Reading ComprehensionDirections: Read the following excerpt from The Root of Morality and answer the questions that follow. For me, altruism is the only possible basis for morality. Of course people everywhere act from self-interest and, historically, humans have done some appalling things to one another. However, if most of us didn’t have feelings o f empathy and duty toward our fellow creatures, society would cease to function. Some people argue that we never truly act based on altruistic motives alone. For example, people who give to charity may do so to make themselves feel good or to give themselves an image of benevolence that will impress others. Conversely, people who refrain from immoral acts could be doing so from fear of looking bad, rather than pure kindness. I think this is a pretty cynical view of human interaction. Morality can’t be founded merely on the desire for praise and the fear of disgrace.17. What would be a good description of altruism?a. Being good to others and getting something back.b. Reading ComprehensionDirections: Read the following excerpt from Sino Weibo Struggles in Face of Competition and Censorship and answer the questions that follow.A survey by the British newspaper, The Telegraph has revealed a direct correlation betweengovernment regulation and drops in usage. In 2011, for example, the authorities begandemanding that people use their real names when posting on the site. The following year, the government announced a “five strikes” policy, which leads to the suspension of any userfound to have posted five times on subjects that are deemed to be politically sensitive. In 2013,a further action against the posting of rumors was implemented. After each of these moves, asharp drop in usage was observed. However, analysts are guarded over whether censorship has played a direct role in the falling usage figures. Instead, experts believe that fewer people are using Weibo because it has simply become less interesting. Now that the power users have become more reticent to post on the site for fear of incurring the wrath of the authorities, the passing on of news that is not from official sources has drastically dwindled. Even posting news that is not politically sensitive is seen as risky if that news cannot be substantiated. With some of the most popular power posters noticeably less active on Weibo, it is hardlysurprising that the average user is finding the website less fun.17. According to the excerpt, what happens to websites when the government interferes?a. There is no change in usage.b. Usage increases.c. Usage decreases.d. No information is given.18. Welcome to the Club! and answer the questions that follow.I came here to teach English in my early 20s and eventually moved into business, running a small import-export operation. I majored in Mandarin Chinese back in the U.S. and continued my languag e studies here. I’m now fluent in Chinese and my reading is just about perfect, I’m married to a local woman and have three kids who were all born and raised here. Granted, I haven’t got Chinese citizenship, as that would have involved me renouncing my Ame rican citizenship. I wasn’t prepared to do that as it would have caused me too many headaches, not least of which would have been having to get a visa every time I wanted to go back to visit family. But I have permanent residency in China and consider this my home. Despite all this, most Chinese people will always see me as an outsider. When I speak Mandarin, some people sometimes stare at me like I’m from another planet as they just can’t get it into their heads that a foreigner can speak their language. Also, as an African-American and a fairly tall guy, I am constantly stereotyped. People will ask if I can play basketball and are incredulous when I say I’m not a big fan. Once when I had just come through customs, I was mobbed by a huge group of fans who were waiting to greet some NBA stars who were visiting. It took me ages to explain that they had the wrong guy. Most of the stereotypes people have here are pretty harmless and there is no malice intended, but it can be pretty annoying, especially when peop le act amazed on discovering you’re a businessman.43. Which of the following is true about the writer?a. He has Chinese citizenship.b. He enjoys basketball.c. He has spent many years in his adopted country.d. He has had no issues adapting in his adopted country.44. What do people find hard to believe about the writer?a. He is an NBA star.b. He is an American businessman.c. He has so many children.d. He’s known for poking fun at anyone and everyone in the entertainment industry including himself. Illustrative of his knack for irreverent, quirky humor is the fact that he was a writer and producer for The Simpsons for a couple of seasons before he made a name for himself. Some might feel that his brand of humor is far from intellectual. However, there is no disputing the 50-year-old’s academic credentials. He graduated magna cum laude from Harvard with a degree in history in 1985.Natalie PortmanThe Israeli-born actress is the perfect example of how beauty and brains need not be mutually exclusive. In addition to starring in many critically acclaimed films, she is known for her political-activism, supporting causes like same-sex marriage in the U.S. and women’s rights in developing countries. Although she made her big screen debut in 1994 at the tender age of 12, she did not let it affect her education.
