AChina is a land of bicycles. At least it was back in 1992 when I traveled the country. Back then everyone seemed to be ridin g a bicycle. Millions of them, all black. Cars were rare. Yet sin ce my arrival in Beijing last year, I've found the opposite is tru e. There are millions of cars. However, people still use their bi cycles to get around. Tenyson suggested that we should buy th e lady a flower. “It will make her feel better,” he said. I was am azed that he’d come up with this sweet idea. So we went over to the flower seller and asked her if we could buy a flower for the lady to cheer her up. “Just take it,” she replied. “I can’t tak e your money for such a wonderful gesture.”By now paramedics(急救人员) had arrived, and were attending to the injured woman. As we walked up to her, my son became intimidated by all the bl ood and medical equipment. He said he was just too scared t o go up to her.Instead I gave the flower to the woman’s husband and told him, “My son was very upset for your wife and wanted to give her this flower to make her feel better.”At that, the old man started crying and said, “Thank you so much, you have a wonderful son. It's twice as big as our current office, and I'm sure we can use the space. And it has a kitchen, a bathroom and a reception area just like we have now. Unfortunately it is nowhere near a subway station. That is a convenience I would miss having, but it does have parking, unlike our current office. I'm sure our clients would appreciate that. It would also be good to be in a building with an elevator. I'm really tired of using the stairs. I'd like to see the space as soon as possible. Could you call and make an appointment? Thursday.DStephen William Hawking(1942.1-2018.3), was a theoretical physicist, cosmologist, author and Director of Research at the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology within the University of Cambridge. Having spent his career d ecoding the universe and even experienced weightlessness, he was urging the continuation of space exploration — for hu manity’s sake. The 76-year-old Hawking once said he did not think humans would survive another 1,000 years “without escaping beyond our fragile (脆弱的)planet.”The scientist made the remarks before an audience of doctors , nurses and employees at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where he toured a stem cell laboratory t hat’s focused on trying to slow the progression of Lou Gehrig’s disease.Hawking was diagnosed (诊断) with the neurological disorder 55 years ago while studying at Cambridge University. He recalled how he became depres sed and at first didn’t see a point in finishing his PhD. But he c ontinued to devote himself to his studies.“If you understand how the universe operates, you control i t in a way,” he said. Famous for his work on black holes and t he origins of the universe, Hawking was also well-known for bringing abstract physics concepts to the masses t hrough his best-selling books.Hawking survived longer than most people with Lou Gehri g’s disease, also known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. ALS attacks nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord(脊髓) that control the muscles. People gradually have more and more trouble breathing and moving as muscles weaken and w aste away. There’s no cure and no way to reverse (倒转) the disease’s progression. Few people with ALS live longe r than a decade.Hawking received around-the-clock care, could only communicate by twitching his cheek, an d relied on a computer mounted to his wheelchair to convey hi s thoughts in a unique robotic monotone.Despite his diagnosis, Hawking remained active. In 2007, he floated like an astronaut on an aircraft that created weightl essness by making parabolic(抛物线) dives. “However difficult life may seem, there is always so mething you can do.” he said.12. Why did Hawking remark that humans will not survive ano ther 1,000 years?A. To warn the earth may not be suitable to live on.B. To make his theory on cosmology widely accepted.C. To show the earth is becoming more and more fragile.D. To persuade human beings to further space exploration.13. What must human beings do if they want to survive accor ding to Hawking?A. Study the universe without stop.B. Escape possible future disasters.C. Realize the way the universe works.D. Protect the environment of the earth.14. What if a person suffers from Lou Gehrig’s disease?A. They will be unable to walk or speak to others.B. They are likely to die within ten years generally.C. They can recover a little bit if they are treated early.D. They are mostly assisted by especially-designed robots15. What do Hawking’s achievements in science lie in?A. His interest in physics.B. His creation of black holes. .C. His research on the universe.D.His strong will against disease.第二节(共5小题;每小题3分,共15分)根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项,并将答案写在答题卡上。

AChocolate is good for your heart, skin and brain. Usually, people think that chocolate is bad for their health. They describe chocolate as “something to die for” or say “death by chocolate”. Now they should bite their tongues! Evidence is showing that some kinds of chocolate are actually good for you in the following ways:A happier heartScientists at Harvard University recently examined 136 studies on cocoa—the main ingredient in chocolate and found that it does seem to strengthen the heart.Studies have shown heart benefits from increased blood flow. These benefits are the result of coca’s chemicals, which seem to prevent both cell damage and inflammation (炎症).Better blood pressureIf yours is high, chocolate may help. Jeffrey Blumberg from Tufts University recently found that people with high blood pressure who ate 3.5 ounces of dark chocolate per day for two weeks saw their blood pressure drop quickly.Muscle magicChocolate milk may help you recover after a hard workout (锻炼). In a small study at Indiana University, people who drank chocolate milk between workouts did better on a tiredness test than those who had some sports drinks.Better for your skinGerman researchers gave 24 women a half-cup of special cocoa every day. After three months, the women’s skin was moister(滑润的) and smoother. The research shows that chocolate helps protect and increase blood flow to the skin, improving its appearance.Brain gainsIt sounds almost too good to be true, but research suggests that chocolate may improve your memory, attention span, reaction time, and problem-solving by increasing blood flow to the brain.21. What’s the meaning of “bite their tongues” in the first paragraph?A. Stop talking.B. Speak up.C. Think of it.D. Listen to it.22. What can’t we get from chocolate according to the text?A. A healthy heart.B. Smooth skin.C. A good mood.D. A beautiful figure.23. What’s the meaning of the underlined sentence in the fourth paragraph?A. Sports drinks are better than chocolate milk.B. Sports drinks can make people feel tired easily.C. Drinking milk can keep you energetic at work.D. We should drink chocolate milk between times when we work hard.24. The conclusion that chocolate may help lower blood pressure was made by ______.A. scientists at Harvard UniversityB. Jeffrey Blumberg from Tufts UniversityC. scientists at Indiana UniversityD. German researchersBBody language is one of the most powerful means of communication, often even more powerful than spoken language. It is said that our body movements communicate about 50 percent of what we really mean while words only express 7 percent. So, while your mouth is closed, your body is just saying.Arms. How you hold your arms shows how open and receptive you are to people you meet. If you keep your arms to the sides of your body or behind your back, this suggests you are not afraid of taking on whatever comes your way. Outgoing people generally use their arms with big movements, while quieter people keep them close to their bodies. If someone upsets you, just cross your arms to show you’re unhappy!Head. When you want to appear confident, keep your head level. If you are a monitor in class, you can also take on this position when you want your words to be taken seriously. However, to be friendly in listening or speaking, you must move your head a little.Legs. Your legs tend to move around a lot more than normal when you are nervous or telling lies. If you are at interviews, try to keep them still!Posture (姿势). A good posture makes you feel better about yourself. If you are feeling down, you normally don’t sit straight, with your shoulders inwards. This makes breathing more difficult, which can make you feel nervous or uncomfortable.Mouth. When you are thinking, you often purse(噘嘴) your lips. You might also use this position to hold back an angry comment you don’t wish to show. However, it will probably still be noticed, and people will know you’re not pleased.Face. When you lie, you might put on a false face. But that expression would crack briefly, allowing displays of true emotions such as happiness, sadness, disgust (厌恶) and fear to come through.25. When someone is keeping his arms behind his back, he tries to tell you thatA. he is angry.B. he is outgoing.C. he is cool.D. he is not afraid.26. If you want to appear confident, you shouldA. cross your arms.B. move your head a little.C. keep your head level.D. move your arms a lot.27. Which of the following movements shows someone is nervous?A. Not sitting straight with the shoulders inwards.B. Moving around a lot more than normal.C. Keeping the arms to the sides of the body.D. Having the lips pursed to hold back an angry comment.28. What can we infer from the passage?A. Body language can express more meanings than words do in communication.B. Liz Payne.BEver happened to have a stranger looking at you with eyes full of anger out of the blue?It was painful and confusing, but sure a great lesson. First thing that passed through my mind was that it must be a misunderstanding, such a look was not meant for me, but later I saw the old lady’s face changing every time she saw me, at least seven times, no more doubt that she was very angry with me.I was confused, shocked, and near anger, my brains were spinning, trying to figure out h ow’s and why’s but somehow managed to not show it on my face. Went home, slept a night over it and decided that I have to find a way to break the ice with this lady. The very next day I bought some nice chocolate praying to see her again and when I caught sight of her, went straight to her and apologized telling her “I am so very sorry if I angered you, I had no such intention, please accept my apologizes”, and handled her the chocolate. Surprised, she told me not to mind her, and apologized too. It was an awkward moment, but we made peace and the grimaces换成embarrassment is/ are replaced by smiles now.I am very grateful for this experience, it shows me I still have plenty of work to do with my mind, I learned how it is not easy to take knowledge of, accept and forgive acts that we may feel as unfair, and it taught me of possibilities about fixing a conflict. Yet many people do not seem to know that memory works in the same way. When someone says that he has a good memory, he really means that he keeps his memory in practice by using it. When someone else says that his memory is poor, he really means that he does not give it enough chance to become strong. If a friend says that his arms and legs are weak, we know that it is his own fault(过错). But if he tells us that he has a poor memory, many of us think that his parents are to blame(受责备), and few of us know that it is just his own fault.Have you ever found that some people can’t read or write but usua lly they have better memories? This is because they cannot read or write and they have to remember things; they cannot write down in a little notebook. They have to remember days, names, songs and stories; so their memory is the whole time being exercised. So if you want to have a good memory, learn from the people: Practice remembering.28.
