AA tiger-attacking death at a Chinese zoo is under investigation by local authorities who say the victim climbed a fence into the tiger’s enclosure. The attack occurred Saturday at a resort on Dongqian Lake in eastern China’s Zhejiang province. A local government statement says the victim, identified only by his surname of Zhang, climbed a fence with a friend instead of buying tickets. The statement said Zhang’s wife and two children, as well as his friend's wife, bought tickets to enter the zoo. Zhang reportedly passed through a wire netting and eventually climbed a wall to enter the tiger enclosure, while his friend stayed back, the statement said. A tiger attacked him inside the enclosure, as visitors to the park apparently watched from a distance. Photos and video shared on social media appear to show Zhang lying on the ground as tigers circle him.State television reported one tiger was shot dead by local police, and three others nearby were driven using firecrackers. One video posted online shows a tiger biting his body as people can be heard screaming. Zhang died later in a hospital. The incident drew a protest from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, or PETA, which said it reflected the problems of keeping tigers and other large cats in a zoo. “Attacks by caged big cats on people-which occur with regularity-illustrate the profound level of stress and anxiety these animals experience every day of their lives,” PETA’s vice president of internationalcampaigns, Jason Baker, said in a statement. Two women were attacked by Siberian tigers last July when they got out of their vehicle at a Beijing safari park. One woman was killed, and the other was seriously injured.1. What do we know about the reason why the attacked man went to the zoo without buying a ticket from the passage?A.He wanted to save money for his wife and children.B.He was good at climbing and wanted to show off.C.He thought it was safe to climb a wall to enter the tiger enclosure .D. The passage doesn’t mention it.2. What can we learn from the passage?①Both Z hang and his friend climbed a fence.②Four tigers circled him but only one was shot finally.③Another two women were also killed by tigers last July.④The attacks occurred because the caged big cats suffered frustration and depression.A. ①③④B. ①②③C. ②③④D. ①②④3. What does the underlined sentence imply?A. We shouldn’t keep big cats in a zoo any more.B. We should only keep grass-eating animal in a zoo.C. Animals with stress and anxiety probably attack people.D. Animals should be put in the wild rather than in a zoo.BThe 2016 Nobel Prize in Physics is shared by three scientists, the Royal Academy of Sciences announced in Stockholm on Tuesday. The Nobel Prize in Physics 2016 was divided, with one half awarded to David J. Thouless, the other half to F. Duncan M. Haldane and J. Michael Kosterlitz “for theoretical discoveries of topological phase transitions and topological phases of matter(物质拓扑相变和拓扑相).”Haldane said he was “very surprised” at the news, adding that he was glad that their discoveries found something previously unnoticed by many, and that they revealed “more possibilities for looking for new materials.” He particularly pointed out that a lot of work was still ongoing. The year’s prize amount is 8 million Swedish krona(0.93 million US dollar s), and will be split properly between the three winners. The winners are given a sum of money when they receive their prizes, in the form of a document confirming the amount awarded. The amount of prize money depends upon how much money the Nobel Foundation can award each year. The purse has increased since the 1980s, when the prize money was 880,000 SEK per prize. In 2009, the monetary award was 10 million SEK (US$1.4 million; €950,000). In June 2012, it was lowered to 8 million SEK.If there are two winners of a particular prize, the award money is divided equally between the winners. If there are three, the awarding committee can choose to divide the money equally, or award one-half to one winner and one-quarter to each of the others. It is common for winners to donate prize money to benefit scientific, cultural, or charities.4. How much price money does Thouless get?A. 8 million Swedish krona.B. 6 million Swedish krona.C. 4 million Swedish krona.D. 2 million Swedish krona.5. The women can give away unwanted clothing at a clothes swap event and get something different in return.Recently about 300 women went to a clothes swap at a high school in Springfield, Virginia. It was the largest crowd ever for the area’s popular clothing-swapping group.Daphne Steinberg was having a good day. “For anyone who knows Ann Taylor LOFT, Ann Taylor is a really nice women’s designer and I will totally wear this to work. So I love that, I love that I can equip myself for work, have a good time in doing it, not totally bankrupt myself.”Sandy Van Dusen likes the idea that clothes are finding new homes instead of being thrown away. “Because it helps to keep the Earth green. There’s no point in my opinion in continuing to buy new clothes when we can reuse what’s already here. Give it a new home--- let somebody else love what you used to love and no longer love.”Kim Pratt organized the clothing-swapping event in Springfield. She also organized a money-raising activity for the high school’s debate team. It is one of several ways that her group gives to charitable causes.Another is by donating all of the “un-swapped” clothing to shelters for victims of domestic violence.“I started doing this four years ago, and we’ve been doing it for four years, getting bigger and bigger each time we have a swap.”She used the social media website to help publicize the events. The website has helped her group grow from 30 members to 1,300. Mrs.Pratt says most of the members respect the clothing swap rules. But she say competition for desirable fashion can be strong.“We have to tell people sometimes not to hover over the new people coming inwith their clothing. As they put it out, some people tend to grab the stuff rightout of their hands and it becomes like a free-for-all. We try to avoid that as muchas possible.”8. At a clothes swap women can ______ .A. make some money by giving away unwanted clothingB. buy whatever clothing they likeC. have a social gathering and make friendsD. exchange unwanted clothing for something different9. But this habit can cause us pain in the neck, shoulders and the lower back. Worse still, this posture (姿态) may also make us age more quickly. The most common change in posture as we age is that our bodies gradually return to the foetal (胎儿的) position: the head and shoulders move forwards, the chest curls inwards and the spine (脊柱) goes from a healthy Scurve to a less healthy Cposition. The main cause of this is weak abdominal (腹部的) muscles from years of sittingin a hunched position, according to Carolyn Hewison, physiotherapy manager for the Nuffield chain hospitals group.“If you look around, you see many people over 50, particularly women, who are starting to develop this stance (姿态),” Hewison told the Daily Mail early this month.Hewison suggests standing up straight several times a day with your back to the wall, heels against the skirting board (踢脚线) and your shoulders and head touching the wall to encourage better posture.“Try to maintain the position as you walk away,” she says. “The more often you do this, the more accustomed our abdominal and back muscles become to providing the necessary support.”Besides bad posture, another cause of weak abdominal muscles is sarcopenia (肌肉减少症) — a gradual loss in muscle mass. According to research, from the age of 25 we all lose an average of a fifth of every 450 grams of muscle each year. There is no means of preventing it completely, but latest research suggests the best preventative measure is doing regular weight training to keep up muscle strength.Osteoporosis (骨质疏松) also contributes to the problem, according to Tom Crisp, a sports expert and lower back expert at the Barbican BUPA medical center, London. However, “you can lessen the risk of getting a hump (驼背) just by being active from as young an age as possible to slow the rate of bone loss linked to osteoporosis,” Crisp said.4. What could be the worst effects of bad sitting habits?A.Speeding up the aging process. B. Pain in the neck and shoulders. C. Loss of bone mass. D. Loss of muscle mass.5. What does the underlined word “this” refer to in Paragraph 3?A. The change in posture. B. Years of bad posture while sitting. C. Weak abdominal muscles. D. The main cause of posture change. 6.According to the article, which of the following statements is TRUE?A. Standing up straight frequently can contribute to better posture.B. Doing regular weight training can completely prevent sarcopenia.C. From the age of 30, people lose a fifth of every 450 grams of muscle each year. D. Old people no longer have any abdominal muscles.7.What can be concluded from the article?A. Weak abdominal muscles lead to sarcopenia.B. Osteoporosis is the main cause of weak abdominal muscles.C. Our bone mass doesn't experience a decrease until the age of 25.D. Doing regular sport at a young age can keep bones and muscles stronger.CWeaving hammocks(吊床) is an art that takes a sharp eye, a skilled hand and lots of patience. I lift weights, but I wasn’t as tough as I thought until I started weaving. It takes a lot of energy, and you’re standing up all day.”In time, however, Lenwood got into a good working rhythm and found he had a gift for the job. At first he worked on-site at the company, but after a year Lenwood moved his operation to the home workshop where he’d worked for 10 years du ring his woodworking days.Since Lenwood began with Hatteras Hammocks 30 years ago, the company has acquired other brands and changed its name to The Hammock Source. And they use computers less often than boys outside the classroom. The instructor of this computer lab says he’s already noticed some differences.Charles says,“Boys are not so afraid they might do something that will harm the computer, whereas girls are afraid they might break it somehow.”Six years ago,the s oftware company Purple Moon noticed that girls’computer usage was falling behind boys.Karen Gould says,“The number one reason girls told us they don’t like computer games is not because they’re too violent,or too competitive. Girls just said they’re incredibly boring.” Purple Moon says it found what girls want, characters they can relate to and story lines relative to what’sgoing on in their own lives. The sponsor of the study says it all boils down to this, the technology gender gap that separates the girls from the boys must be closed if women are to compete effectively with men in the 21st century.12.The best title for the passage would be________.A. 江苏省徐州市第三中学高三年级英语午练28缺答案【高考】

江苏省徐州市第三中学高三年级英语午练28缺答案【高考】

徐州三中2018届高三年级英语午练28 Chimps(黑猩猩)will cooperate in certain ways, like gathering in war parties to protect their territory. But beyond the minimum requirements as social beings, they have little instinct(本能)to help one another.Chimps in the wild seek food for themselves.Even chimp mothers regularly decline to share food with their children, who are able from a young age to gather their own food.In the laboratory, chimps don't naturally share food either. If a chimp is put in a cage where he can pull in one plate of food for himself or,with no greater effort,a plate that also provides food for a neighbor in the next cage,he will pull at random—he just doesn't care whether his neighbor gets fed or not.Chimps are truly selfish.Human children,on the other hand, are naturally cooperative. From the earliest ages, they desire to help others,to share information and to participate in achieving common goals. The psychologist Michael Tomasello has studied this cooperativeness in a series of experiments with very young children. He finds that if babies aged 18 months see an unrelated adult with hands full trying to open a door, almost all will immediately try to help. There are several reasons to believe that the urges to help, inform and share are not taught, but naturally possessed in young children. One is that these instincts appear at a very young age before most parents have started to train their children to behave socially.Another is that the helping behaviors are not improved if the children are rewarded.A third reason is that social intelligence develops in children before their general cognitive(认知的)skills,at least when compared with chimps. In tests conducted by Tomasello, the human children did no better than the chimps on the physical world tests but were considerably better at understanding the social world. The core of what children's minds have and chimps' don't is what Tomasello calls shared intentionality.Part of this ability is that they can infer what others know or are thinking. But beyond that, even very young children want to be part of a shared purpose. They actively seek to be part of a “we”,a group that intends to work toward a shared goal.1.The passage is mainly about________.A.the helping behaviors of young childrenB.ways to train children's shared intentionalityC.cooperation as a distinctive human natureD.the development of intelligence in childrenNot so long ago, most people didn't know who ShellyAnn FraserPryce was going to become. She was just an average high school athlete. There was every indication that she was just another Jamaican teenager without much of a future. However, one person wanted to change this.Stephen Francis observed then eighteenyearold Shelly Ann at a track meet and was convinced that he had seen the beginnings of true greatness. Her times were not exactly impressive, but even so,he sensed there was something trying to get out, something the other coaches had overlooked when they had assessed her and found her lacking. He decided to offer ShellyAnn a place in his very strict training sessions.Their cooperation quickly produced results, and a few years later at Jamaica's Olympic trials in early 2008,ShellyAnn,who at that time only ranked number 70 in the world, beat Jamaica's unchallenged queen of the sprint(短跑).2.What is the best title for the passage?A.The Making of a Great AthleteB.The Dream for ChampionshipC.The Key to High PerformanceD.The Power of Full ResponsibilityWeather is a famously boring conversation starter—until you drop a name like Sandy,Katrina,Juno,or Irene.Even without a hurricane or “snowmageddon”on the horizon, weather reports on channels like CNN have high viewer ratings.Sometimes, the Weather Channel itself beats the rest of the competition. But why are people so fascinated by storms, even when they're nowhere near them? When the weather turns bad,why can't we look away, even after we've gotten the information we need to get through it?We may be addicted to the danger.Humans didn't evolve to be safe, riskminimizing citizens;because our early experiences involved constantly dangerous conditions,we developed a certain baseline expectation of risk.Even if you stayed inside your camp or your cave, the world was full of unpredictable, potentially dangerous things. And actively taking risks could be rewarded;that might have been the only way to get food.In the modern environment,we aren't exposed to natural risks in the same way.But the underlying neural mechanisms haven't gone anywhere. Some people have a natural bent for highrisk situations. They run extreme races,BASE jump,or invest in changeable stocks. Most of us,though, enjoy a certain thrill without losing our heads. We like roller coasters. We'll ski the blackdiamond trail but may not go off track. It's a phenomenon that the sociologist Stephen Lyng calls edgework. We feel like we're living on the edge, but we know that there's a safety net.Edgework is precisely what extreme weather is.A winter storm—or any storm, really—approximates this thrill. It's powerful and even dangerous. But safely settled inside and in front of our computer screens,we don't think it will really hurt us.The power might go out,but then we would be able to share a picture of a car buried in a snowdrift. And then, soon,it will be over. You will have had the thrill, and you might have gained control over it by capturing a moment of “danger”,but in all,it seems a relatively minor risk.We satisfy our inner risk seeker without going into dangerous territory. As for the people on the West Coast who followed the winter storm Juno in 2015 as eagerly as any New Yorker or Bostonian, risk can well be experienced vicariously(代理地).We stay glued to forecasts of gloom and doom for the same reason we watch the latest X Games. They capture our attention and emotion. The media know this all too well. There is one major exception:those who suffered an extreme weather catastrophe in the past.We learn differently from description than from experience. If you were in a recordbreaking storm in the past and nothing bad happened, you will likely dismiss the current danger. But if you experienced a major loss—the destruction of a house, say,or a multiweeklong loss of power—you likely won't do much rubbernecking this time.Unlike everyone else, you realize the danger probably isn't worth massive media coverage.3.Which of the following is true about edgework mentioned in the passage ?A.People won't take any risk without consideration.B.Taking risks has been a type of lifestyle in people's life.C.People tend to expect the arrival of extreme weather.D.Facing danger can satisfy people's inner desire for risk.4.What can be inferred from the passage?A.Evolution of human beings weakens people's awareness of taking risks.B.People who once suffered from storms show less curiosity about them.C.The contents from the media lead to people being addicted to the danger.D.People on the West Coast with New Yorkers went through the winter storm Juno.5.What is the best title for the passage?A.Why we love superstormsB.How extreme weather influences our lifeC.Why people like taking risksD.How we deal with weather forecastsThe habitforming process within our brains is a threestep loop(回路).First, there is a cue,a trigger that tells your brain to go into automatic mode(模式)and which habit to use. Then there is the routine, which can be physical or mental or emotional. Finally, there is a reward, which helps your brain figure out if this particular loop is worth remembering for the future.Over time, this loop—cues, routines, rewards—becomes more and more automatic. The cue and reward become intertwined(交织)until a powerful sense of anticipation and a desire appear.Eventually,a habit is born.Habits aren't destiny.Habits can be ignored, changed,or replaced. But the reason the discovery of the habit loop is so important is that it reveals a basic truth:When a habit appears, the brain stops fully participating in decisionmaking. It stops working so hard,or shifts focus to other tasks. So unless you deliberately fight a habit—unless you find new routines—the pattern will unfold automatically.Habits never really disappear. They're encoded(把……编码)into the structures of our brain, and that's a huge advantage for us,because it would be awful if we had to relearn how to drive after every vacation. The problem is that your brain can't tell the difference between bad and good habits, and so if you have a bad one,it's always lurking(蛰伏)there, waiting for the right cues and rewards. This explains why it's so hard to create exercise habits, for instance,or change what we eat.Once we develop a routine of sitting on the sofa, rather than running,or snacking whenever we pass a doughnut box, those patterns always remain inside our heads.By the same rule, though,if we learn to create new neurological(神经系统的)routines that overpower those behaviors—if we take control of the habit loop—we can force those bad tendencies into the background. And once someone creates a new pattern, studies have demonstrated, going for a jog or ignoring the doughnuts becomes as automatic as any other habit.Of course, those decisions are habitual, effortless. As long as your basal ganglia(基底核)is complete and the cues remain constant, the behaviors will occur unthinkingly. At the same time, however, the brain's dependence on automatic routines can be dangerous.Habits are often as much a curse as a benefit.6.What can we learn about the habit loop from the first two paragraphs?A.It helps your brain understand what is worth remembering.B.It is a threestep loop consisting of a cue,a routine and a reward.C.It becomes automatic and develops a sense of anticipation and desire.D.It reveals a basic truth that the pattern of a habit will unfold automatically. 7.The advantage of habits never really disappearing is that________.A.we can easily change what we eatB.we develop a routine of sitting on the sofaC.we don't necessarily learn a skill againD.we can distinguish between bad and good habits8.What can be inferred from the last sentence in Paragraph 4?A.Habits can be changed and replaced.B.Habits cannot be ignored or created.C.Old patterns always exist in our brain.D.New patterns seldom remain in our heads. 9.What does the passage mainly talk about?A.The discovery of the habit loop.B.The automatic pattern of habits.C.The research on the habitforming process.D.The brain's dependence on automatic routines.。

AMany of us mistakenly believe that it's wrong to think we hav e any good qualities. We may spend a lot of time blaming our selves for our negative qualities, thinking that self criticism is t he key to improving our performance. However, a constant fo cus on our supposed shortcomings can stop our efforts to ma ke friends with other people. How can we believe that others c ould like us if we believe our inner being is flawed(有缺陷)?If someone seems to dislike you, the reason for that dislike might have little or nothing to do with you. The person who do esn't like you might be fearful, or shallow, or busy or shy. Perhaps you and that person are simply a mismatch for each other at this particular time.Don't take yourself out of the game by deciding that your fla ws are bigger than your good qualities. In fact, some of the ve ry qualities you consider to be flaws may be irresistible to som eone else. Ther e are many people who don’t mind your extra pounds. You m ay drive a shabby car, but you might be a great dancer and a l oyal friend. There are people out there looking for loyalty, or f un, or sweetness, or wisdom, and the package it comes in is not important. If you are worried that you are not beautiful eno ugh to attract friends, keep in mind that not everyone is lookin g for physical beauty in their friends. You can decide to feel in ferior(自卑) because you don't have much money and you don't driv e a nice car. You can believe that this is the reason that you d on't have many friends in your life. On the other hand, if you a re very wealthy you may be suspicious that everyone is after your money and that nobody really likes you as a person. The point is that you can focus on just about anything and believe it's the reason you do not have friends and cannot make any.1. According to the author ___________ plays an important role in making friends.A. admitting your shortcomingsB. self criticismC. modestyD. confidence2. If you are not liked by a person, _________.A. you should find the reason in yourselfB. you’d better talk with the person face to faceC. you may not be the one to be blamedD. you and that person misunderstand each other3. Which of the following is true according to the author?A. It is important to lose weight.B. It is easier for a wealthy person to make friends.C. Inner qualities are more important than physical appearanc e.D. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage.AMost people say “yes” much more readily than “no”.A friend is moving house this weekend and would like some help, and you agree. But, what you really wanted was a couple of quiet days relaxing at home. Or a roommate spends the entire weekends playing video games and wants to borrow your homework for “reference”. But, you’ve just finished it after taking a whole day to work hard. Many peop le say “yes” to these kinds of requests. They tend not to consider their own interests and feelings, and are often angry with themselves afterwards .Saying “no” requires courage and considerable practice, in fact, according to psychologists .“Everyone wants to be liked,” says Gabriele Steinki, a German psychologist. “Saying ‘no’ risks losing the affection of the person asking the favor or even a job.”The result is that many people say “yes” just for keeping the peace. But experts say this is regrettable . Anyone should have the right to say “no”.In fact, rejecting a request can even help to strengthen a relationship because it expresses a true feeling. But, for people used to agreeing to every request, changing can be a long and uncomfortable learning process. Most people believe that “If I say ‘no’, I’ll lose the affection of the person. But the affection is important to me.” This way of thin king can be replaced by this: “If he only likes me because I always do what suits him , then the price of his affection is too high in the long term.”Steinki says the key is talking to the other person to find a mutual (相互的) solution. “One n eeds to present the situation from one’s own point of view, and to suggest how the situation can be dealt with to the advantage of both parties. The other person must have the feeling that his interests are being considered.”When the refusal (拒绝) is not accepted, Steinki advises giving the reasons calmly again until the person gets the message .56. Most people say “yes” much more readily than “no” because________.A. they don’t care about their own interests and feelingsB. they don’t know they will regret afterwardsC. they have already been used to saying “yes”D. they care more about others’ affection57. In the opinion of experts, _________ .A. people need a lot of practice to say “no”B. people should say “yes” to keep the peaceC. saying “no” means losing a jobD. people have the right to be liked58. According to the writer, what should you do if you want to refuse the other person’s request?A. Just say you can’t help him.B. Say sorry to him.C. Refuse him clearly.D. Talk to the other person to find a mutual way.59. According to the writer, what should you do if your refusal is not accepted?A. Say yes to him.B. Repeat your reason for his acceptanceC. Just go awayD. Say no to him60. What is the best title of the passage?A. You Need Courage To Say “No”B. “Yes”More Than “No”C. Nobody Has The Right To Say “No”D. It’s Easy To Say “Yes”BAs the pace of life continues to increase, we are fast losing theart of relaxation. Once you are in the habit of rushing through lift, being on the go from morning till night, it is hard to slow down. Butrelaxation is essential for a healthy mind and body.Stress is a natural part of everyday life and there is no way toavoid it. In fact, it is not the bad thing it is often supposed tobe. A certain amount of stress is vital to provide motivation and givepurpose to life. It is only when the stress gets out of control thatit can lead to poor performance and ill health. The amount of stress a person can withstand depends very much onthe individual. Some people are not afraid of stress, and suchcharacters are obviously prime material for managerialresponsibilities. Others lose heart at the first signs of unusualdifficulties. When exposed to stress, in whatever form, we react bothchemically and physically. In fact we make choice between "fight" or"flight" and in more primitive days the choice made the differencebetween life or death. The crises we meet today are unlikely to beso extreme, but however little the stress is, it involves the sameresponse. It is when such a reaction lasts long, through continuedexposure to stress, that health becomes endangered. Such serious conditions as high blood pressure and heart disease have established links with stress. Since we cannot remove stress from our lives (it would be unwise to do so even if we could), we need to find ways todeal with it.61. People are finding less and less time for relaxing themselvesbecause_____.A. they do not know how to enjoy themselvesB. they do not believe that relaxation is important for healthC. they are travelling fast all the timeD. they are becoming busier with their work62. According to the writer, the most important character for agood manager is his ________.A. not fearing stressB. knowing the art ofrelaxationC. high sense of responsibilityD. having controlover performance63. Which of the following statements is true? A. We can find some ways to avoid stress. B. Stress is always harmful to people.C. It is easy to change the habit of keeping oneself busy with work.D. Different people can withstand different amounts of stress.64. In Paragraph 3, "such a reaction" refers back to_______.A. "making a choice between 'flight' or 'fight'"B. "reaction to stress both chemically and physically"C. "responding to crises quickly"D. "losing heart at the signs difficulties"65. In the last sentence of the passage, "do so " refers to ______.A. "expose ourselves to stress"B. "find ways to deal with stress"C. "remove stress from our lives"D. "established links between diseases and stress" CDo you know who invented the slide-fastener, or rather, the zipper (拉链)? No one thought of anything like the zipper until Whitcomb Judson came along. Judson ’s slide-fastener was an out-of-blue invention. No one knows what gave him the idea. No one even knows much about him, except that he was a mechanical engineer living in Chicago and that he patented other inventions to do with a street railway system and motorcars.Judson invented the first zipper in 1891. This ingenious little device looks very simple, and the principle behind it is simple, too; yet it took a lot of years, together with another inventor to make thezipper really practical. The zipper had to be produced cheaply, because no one would pay alot of money for it. Judson invented a machine to mass-produce his slide-fastener. But the machine was terribly complicated and kept on breaking down. So in 1905 Judson invented a new fastener, the C-curity, which was easier to manufacture. Clothing manufacturers, however, were not the least bit interested in trying out the fasteners, so the only way Judson could get them on to the market was by letting pedlars(小贩) sell them from door to door. Moreover, the C-curity fastener was clumsy and had a bad habit of bursting open at inconvenient times. Then a young Swedish engineer called Sundback came to work for Judson’s struggling company. He thought hard and decided that the interlocking parts needed to be much smaller to give the fastener greater flexibility and to stop it bursting open. After several attempts, Sundback invented a really practical fastener in 1913. It is in all important ways the same as the one we use today.Clothing manufacturers still refused to use the fastener. But in 1918 an inventor showed the American army a flying suit he had invented. It happened to use the slide-fastener. The army put the suit through such tough tests that it disintegrated(分裂)---all except the fastener! A Navy officer happened to see the tests, and Judson’s unknown little company got an order for ten thousand fastener s. Later, Judson’s invention was used in the manufacture of rubber galoshes(橡套鞋) by a big company. They called the galoshes `Zippers´. This is how the slide-fastener got its popular name.66. Complete the diagram / Fill in the numbered blanks by using the information for the passage.Write NO MORE THAN 3 WORDS for each answer. Why must we pay taxes? The answer is that the government needs money for many things, for example, to pay its soldiers, sailors and airmen, to build roads, bridges, offices, schools, etc, and to buy goods from abroad; and only the people of the country can supply the money. One of the most important taxes is income-tax which a person pays according to the amount of his income, whether he is a merchant, a doctor, a lawyer, a shopkeeper, a miner or anything else. This is called a “direct” tax, because it is paid in money directly to the government.Another tax is paid on goods such as watches, jewelry, new clothes, tobacco, wine, etc, when they are brought into a country. Such a tax is paid as part of the price of these goods if they are late sold in shops. We call it “indirect” tax, because it is paid indirectly through the shopkeepers.People usually complain about having to pay taxes, but they forget that the money is spent on things that they and their families need. We need policemen to catch thieves, to see that men obey the laws, to direct traffic, etc, and they must be paid what they earn; children need education and there must be schools and teachers; we want our streets to be kept clean, and the wages of men who do this kind of work have to be paid. Above all, the country must always be ready to defend itself against attacking enemies, and we can’t have an army without paying for it. Besides, if a country wants to develop, there are many other things to do.Taxes, therefore, cannot be avoided. We buy our food and clothes and pay for our amusements; but, there are several things that the State finds the money for, and that is necessary for us if our society is to continue. We have no real reason to complain, therefore, when we are asked to supply money to be spent for the good of ourselves and for our fellow-citizens.Tax is a/an 71 part of our lifeWhy must we pay taxes?⊕The State need the money for our society to 72 .⊕We supply money for the good of ourselves and 73 .How do we pay taxes?⊕ 74The tax is paid according to one’s 75 .The tax is paid to the government.⊕ 76The tax is paid through/by 77 .The tax is paid as part of the price of goods.Where does tax money go?⊕To 78 —to keep us safe⊕To teachers—to 79⊕To cleaners—to 80⊕To the army—to defend our countrySECTION BDirections: Read the following passage. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage.AMost people say “yes〞much more readily than “no〞.A friend is moving house this weekend and would like some help, and you agree. But, what you really wanted was a couple of quiet days relaxing at home. Or a roommate spends the entire weekends playing video games and wants to borrow your homework for “reference〞. But, you’ve just finished it after taking a whole day to work h ard. Many peop le say “yes〞 to these kinds of requests. They tend not to consider their own interests and feelings, and are often angry with themselves afterwards .Saying “no〞 requires courage and considerable practice, in fact, according to psychologists .“Everyone wants to be liked,〞 says Gabriele Steinki, a German psychologist. “Saying ‘no’ risks losing the affection of the person asking the favor or even a job.〞The result is that many people say “yes〞 just for keeping the peace. But experts say this is regrettable . An yone should have the right to say “no〞.In fact, rejecting a request can even help to strengthen a relationship because it expresses a true feeling. But, for people used to agreeing to every request, changing can be a long and uncomfortable learning process. Most people believe that “If I say ‘no’, I’ll lose the affection of the person. But the affection is important to me.〞 This way of thinking can be replaced by this: “If he only likes me because I always do what suits him , then the pri ce of his affection is too high in the long term.〞Steinki says the key is talking to the other person to find a mutual (相互的) solution. “One n eeds to present the situation from one’s own point of view, and to suggest how the situation can be dealt with to the advantage of both parties. The other person must have the feeling that his interests are being considered.〞When the refusal (拒绝) is not accepted, Steinki advises giving the reasons calmly again until the person gets the message .56. Most people say “yes〞much more readily than “no〞 because ________.A. they don’t care about their own interests and feelingsB. they don’t know they will regret afterwardsC. they have already been used to saying “yes〞D. they care more about others’ a ffection57. In the opinion of experts, _________ .A. people need a lot of practice to say “no〞B. people should say “yes〞 tokeep the peaceC. saying “no〞 means losing a jobD. people have the right to be liked58. According to the writer, what should you do if you want to refuse the otherperson’s request?A. Just say you can’t help him.B. Say sorry to him.C. Refuse him clearly.D. Talk to the other person to find amutual way.59. According to the writer, what should you do if your refusal is not accepted?A. Say yes to him.B. Repeat your reason for hisacceptanceC. Just go awayD. Say no to him60. What is the best title of the passage?A. You Need Courage To Say “No〞B. “Yes〞 More Than “No〞C. Nobody Has The Right To Say “No〞D. It’s Easy To Say “Yes〞BAs the pace of life continues to increase, we are fast losing the art of relaxation. Once you are in the habit of rushing through lift, being on the gofrom morning till night, it is hard to slow down. But relaxation is essentialfor a healthy mind and body.Stress is a natural part of everyday life and there is no way to avoid it.In fact, it is not the bad thing it is often supposed to be. A certain amountof stress is vital to provide motivation and give purpose to life. It is onlywhen the stress gets out of control that it can lead to poor performance and illhealth. The amount of stress a person can withstand depends very much on the individual. Some people are not afraid of stress, and such characters are obviously primematerial for managerial responsibilities. Others lose heart at the first signsof unusual difficulties. When exposed to stress, in whatever form, we react bothchemically and physically. In fact we make choice between "fight" or "flight"and in more primitive days the choice made the difference between life or death. The crises we meet today are unlikely to be so extreme, but however little thestress is, it involves the same response. It is when such a reaction lasts long, through continued exposure to stress, that health becomes endangered. Suchserious conditions as high blood pressure and heart disease have established linkswith stress. Since we cannot remove stress from our lives (it would be unwiseto do so even if we could), we need to find ways to deal with it.61. People are finding less and less time for relaxing themselvesbecause_____.A. they do not know how to enjoy themselvesB. they do not believe that relaxation is important for healthC. they are travelling fast all the timeD. they are becoming busier with their work62. According to the writer, the most important character for a good manageris his ________.A. not fearing stressB. knowing the art ofrelaxationC. high sense of responsibilityD. having control overperformance63. Which of the following statements is true?A. We can find some ways to avoid stress.B. "established links between diseases and stress"CDo you know who invented the slide-fastener, or rather, the zipper〔拉链〕? Noone thought of anything like the zipper until Whitcomb Judson came along. No one knows what gave him the idea.No one even knows much about him, except that he was a mechanical engineer livingin Chicago and that he patented other inventions to do with a street railway systemand motorcars.Judson invented the first zipper in 1891. This ingenious little device looks verysimple, and the principle behind it is simple, too; yet it took a lot of years, togetherwith another inventor to make the zipper really practical. The zipper had to be produced cheaply, because no one would pay a lot of moneyfor it. Judson invented a machine to mass-produce his slide-fastener. But the machinewas terribly complicated and kept on breaking down. So in 1905 Judson invented a newfastener, the C-curity, which was easier to manufacture. Clothing manufacturers, however, were not the least bit interested in trying out the fasteners, so the onlyway Judson could get them on to the market was by letting pedlars〔小贩〕 sell themfrom door to door. But in Lenwood Haddock’s case, being blin d works to his advantage. His trained, sensitive hands can perfectly handle every step of the complicated process. Since beginning his craft in 1986, Lenwood has woven about 145,000 perfect hammocks. Now 61, Lenwood lost his sight in 1973, at age 18, during a hunting accident. “My whole working career has been blind,” he says. Today, it is the world’s largest maker and seller of hammocks, all built by hand.8. Which of the following is needed in weaving hammocks?A. Poor eyesight.B. Sensitive mind.C. Untrained craft.D. How to Become a Successful CraftsmanDThe girls in this sixth grade class in East Palo,California, all have the same access to computers as boys. But researchers say,by the time they get to high school, they are victims of what the researchers call a major new gender gap in technology.Janice Weinman of the American Association of University Woman says,“Girls tend to be less comfortable than boys with the computer. They use it more for word processing rather than for problem solving, rather than to discover new ways in which to understand information.”After reexamining a thousand studies, the American Association of University women researchers found that girls make up only a small percentage of students in computer science classes.Girls consistently rate themselves significantly lower than boys in their ability and confidence in using computers. 河南省师范大学附属中学2018届高三8月开学考试英语试题Word版含答案

第一卷一、阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并且在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

ATom was one of the brightest boys in the year, with supportive parents. But when he was 15 he suddenly stopped trying. He left school at 16 with only two scores for secondary school subjects. One of the reasons that made it cool for him not to care was the power of his peer(同龄人)group. The lack of right male role models in many of their lives—at home and particularly in the school environment—means that their peers are the only people they have to judge themselves against. They don't see men succeeding in society so it doesn't occur to them that they could make something of themselves.Without male teachers as a role model, the effect of peer actions and street culture is all-powerful.Boys want to be part of a club. However, schools can provide the environment for change, and provide the right role models for them.Teachers need to be trained to stop that but not in front of a child's peers. You have to do it one to one, because that is when you see the real child. It's pointless sending a child home if he or she has done wrong. They see it as a welcome day off to watch television or play computer games.Instead, schools should have a special unit where a child who has done wrong goes for the day and gets advice about his problems—somewhere he can work away from his peers and go home after the other children.1.Why did Tom give up studying?A.He disliked his teachers.B.His parents no longer supported him.C.It's cool for boys of his age not to care about studies.D.There were too many subjects in his secondary school.2.What seems to have a bad effect on students like Tom?A.Peer groups.B.A special unit.C.The student judges.D.The home environment.3.What should schools do to help the problem schoolboys?A.Wait for their change patiently.B.Train leaders of their peer groups.C.Stop the development of street culture.D.Give them lessons in a separate area.4.A teacher's work is most effective with a schoolboy when he .A.is with the boy aloneB.teaches the boy a lessonC.sends the boy home as punishmentD.works together with another teacherBSilence is unnatural to man.He begins life with a cry and ends it in stillness. In between he does all he can to make a noise in the world, and he fears silence more than anything else.Even his conversation is an attempt to prevent a fearful silence. If he is introduced to another person, and a number of pauses occur in the conversation,he regards himself as a failure,a worthless person, and is full of envy of the emptiest-headed chatterbox(喋喋不休的人). He knows that ninety nine percent of human conversation means no more than the buzzing of a fly,but he is anxious to join in the buzz and to prove that he is a man and not a waxwork figure(蜡塑人像).The aim of conversation is not,for the most part,to communicate ideas;it is to keep up the buzzing sound. There are,it must be admitted, different qualities of buzz;there is even a buzz that is as annoying as the continuous noise made by a mosquito. But at a dinner party one would rather be a mosquito than a quiet person. Most buzzing, fortunately,is pleasant to the ear,and some of it is pleasant even to the mind.He would be a foolish man if he waited until he had a wise thought to take part in the buzzing with his neighbors. Those who hate to pick up the weather as a conversational opening seem to me not to know the reason why human beings wish to talk.Very few human beings join in a conversation in the hope of learning anything new. Some of them are content if they are merely allowed to go on making a noise into other people's ears, though they have nothing to tell them except that they have seen two or three new plays or that they had food in a Swiss hotel. At the end of an evening, during which they have said nothing meaningful for a long time. They just prove themselves to besuccessful conservationists.5.According to the author, people make conversation to .A.exchange ideasB.prove their valueC.achieve success in lifeD.overcome their fear of silence6.By “the buzzing of a fly”(Para.1),the author means “”. .A.the noise of an insectB.a low whispering soundC.meaningless talksD.the voice of a chatterbox7.According to the passage, people usually talk to their neighbors .A.about whatever they have preparedB.about whatever they want toC.in the hope of learning something newD.in the hope of getting on well8.What is the author's purpose in writing the passage?A.To discuss why people like talking about weather.B.To encourage people to join in conversations.C.To persuade people to stop making noises.D.To explain why people keep talking.CAs kids,my friends and I spent a lot of time out in the woods,"The woods" was our part-time address, destination, purpose, and excuse. If I went to a friend's house and found him not at home, his mother might say, "Oh,he's out in the woods,"with a tone of airy acceptance. It's similar to the tone people sometimes use nowadays to tell me that someone I'm looking for is on the golf course or at the gym,or even "away from his desk."For us ten-year-olds,"being out in the woods" was just an excuse to do whatever we feel like for a while. We sometimes told ourselves that what we were doing in the woods was exploring.Exploring was a more popular idea back then than it is today.History seemed to be mostly about explorers. Our explorations, though, seemed to have less system than the historic kind: something usually came up along the way.Say we stayed in the woods, throwing rocks, shooting frogs, picking blackberries, digging in what we were briefly persuaded was an Italian burial mound.Often we got "lost" and had to climb a tree to find out where we were.If you read a story in which someone does that successfully,be skeptical: the topmost branches are usually too skinny to hold weight, and we could never climb high enough to see anything except other trees. There werefour or five trees that we visited regularly—tall beeches, easy to climb and comfortable to sit in.It was in a tree, too, that our days of fooling around in the woods came to an end.By then some of us had reached seventh grade and had begun the rough ride of adolescence. In March, the month when we usually took to the woods again after winter, two friends and I set out to go exploring. We climbed a tree, and all of a sudden it occurred to all three of us at the same time that we really were rather big to be up in a tree.Soon there would be the spring dances on Friday evenings in the high school cafeteria.9.The author and his fiends were often out in the woods to .A.spend their free timeB.play gold and other sportsC.avoid doing their schoolworkD.keep away from their parents10.What can we infer from Paragraph 2?A.The activities in the woods were well planned.B.Human history is not the result of exploration.C.Exploration should be a systematic activity.D.The author explored in the woods aimlessly.11.How does the author feel about his childhood?A.Happy but short.B.Lonely but memorable.C.Boring and meaningless.D.Long and unforgettable.DThe Diet Zone: A Dangerous PlaceDiet Coke, diet Pepsi, diet pills,no-fat diet, vegetable diet...We are surrounded by the word "diet" everywhere we look and listen. We have so easily been attracted by the promise and potential of diet products that we have stopped thinking about what diet products are doing to us.We are paying for products that harm us psychologically and physically.Diet products significantly weaken us psychologically. On one level,we are not allowing our brain to admit that our weight problems lie not in actually losing the weight, but in controlling the consumption of fatty,high-calorie, unhealthy foods.Diet products allow us to jump over the thinking stage and go straight for the scale instead. All we have to do is to swallow or recognize the word "diet" in food labels. On another level, diet products have greater psychological effects.Every time we have azero-calorie drink,we are telling ourselves without our awareness that we don't have to work to get results.Diet products make people believe that gain comes without pain, and that life can be without resistance and struggle. The danger of diet products lies not only in the psychological effects they have on us,but also in the physical harm that they cause.Diet foods can indirectly harm our bodies because consuming them instead of healthy foods means we are preventing our bodies from having basic nutrients.Diet foods and diet pills contain zero calorie only because the diet industry has created chemicals to produce these wonder products.Diet products may not be nutritional, and the chemical that go into diet products are potentially dangerous. Now that we are aware of the effects that diet products have on us,it is time to seriously think about buying them.Losing weight lies in the power of minds, not in the power of chemicals.Once we realize this,we will be much better able to resist diet products, and therefore prevent the psychological harm that comes from using them.12.From Paragraph 1,we learn that .A.diet products fail to bring out people's potentialB.people have difficulty in choosing diet productsC.diet products are misleading peopleD.people are fed up with diet products13.One psychological effect of diet products is that people tend to .A.try out a variety of diet foodsB.hesitate before they enjoy diet foodsC.pay attention to their own eating habitsD.watch their weight rather than their diet14.In Paragraph 3,"gain comes without pain" probably means .A.losing weight is effortlessB.it costs a lot to lose weightC.diet products bring no painD.diet products are free from calories15.Diet products indirectly harm people physically because such products .A.are over-consumedck basic nutrientsC.are short of chemicalsD.provide too much energy第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项(选项中有两项为多余选项),并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
