A letter to his son
英语阅读:A Letter to My Son
Dear Seth,You’re only three years old, and at this point in your life you can't read, much less understand what I’m going to try to tell you in this letter. But I've been thinking a lot about the life that you have ahead of you, about my life so far as I reflect on what I've learned, and about my role as a dad in trying to prepare you for the trials that you will face in the coming years. You won't be able to understand this letter today, but someday, when you're ready, I hope you will find some wisdom and value in what I share with you.You are young, and life has yet to take its toll on you, to throw disappointments and heartaches and loneliness and struggles and pain into your path. You have not been worn down yet by long hours of thankless work, by the slings and arrows of everyday life. For this, be thankful. You are at a wonderful stage of life. You have many wonderful stages of life still to come, but they are not without their costs and perils.I hope to help you along your path by sharing some of the best of what I've learned. As with any advice, take it with a grain of salt. What works for me might not work for you.Life Can Be CruelThere will be people in your life who won't be very nice. They'll tease you because you're different, or for no good reason. They might try to bully you or hurt you. There's not much you can do about these people except to learn to deal with them, and learn to choose friends who are kind to you, who actually care about you, who make you feel good about yourself. When you find friends like this, hold on to them, treasure them, spend time with them, be kind to them, love them. There will be times when you are met with disappointment instead of success. Life won't always turn out the way you want. This is just another thing you'll have to learn to deal with. But instead of letting these things get you down, push on. Accept disappointment and learn to persevere, to pursue your dreams despite pitfalls. Learn to turn negatives into positives, and you'll do much better in life. You will also face heartbreak and abandonment by those you love. I hope you don't have to face this too much, but it happens. Again, not much you can do but to heal, and to move on with your life. Let these pains become stepping stones to better things in life, and learn to use them to make you stronger. But Be Open to life AnywayYes, you'll find cruelty and sufferi ng in your journey through life … but don't let that close you to new things. Don't retreat from life, don't hide or wall yourself off. Be open to new things, new experiences, new people. You might get your heart broken 10 times, but find the most wonderful woman the 11th time. If you shut yourself off from love, you'll miss out on that woman, and the happiest times of your life. You might get teased and bullied and hurt by people you meet … andthen after meeting dozens of jerks, find a true friend. If you close yourself off to new people, and don't open your heart to them, you'll avoid pain … but also lose out on meeting some incredible people, who will be there during the toughest times of your life and create some of the best times of your life. You will fail many times but if you allow that to stop you from trying, you will miss out on the amazing feeling of success once you reach new heights with your accomplishments. Failure is a stepping stone to success.Life Isn't a CompetitionYou will meet many people who will try to outdo you, in school, in college, at work. They'll try to have nicer cars, bigger houses, nicer clothes, cooler gadgets. To them, life is a competition — they have to do better than their peers to be happy. Here's a secret: Life isn't a competition. It's a journey. If you spend that journey always trying to impress others, to outdo others, you’re wasting your journey. Instead, learn to enjoy the journey. Make it a journey of Happiness, of constant learning, of continual improvement, of love.Don't worry about having a nicer car or house or anything material, or even a better-paying job. None of that matters a whit, and none of it will make you happier. You'll acquire these things and then only want more. Instead, learn to be satisfied with having enough —and then use the time you would have wasted trying to earn money to buy those things … use that time doing things you love.Find your passion, and pursue it doggedly. Don't settle for a job thatpays the bills. Life is too short to waste on a job you hate.Love Should Be Your RuleIf there's a single word you should live your life by, it should be this: Love. It might s ound corny, I know … but trust me, there's no better rule in life. Some would live by the rule of success. Their lives will be stressful, unhappy and shallow.Others would live by the rule of selfishness —putting their needs above those of others. They will live lonely lives, and will also be unhappy.Still others will live by the rule of righteousness — trying to show the right path, and admonishing anyone who doesn't live by that path. They are concerned with others, but in a negative way, and in the end will only have their own righteousness to live with, and that's a horrible companion.Live your life by the rule of love. Love your spouse, your children, your parents, your friends, with all of your heart. Give to them what they need, and show them not cruelty nor disapproval nor coldness nor disappointment, but only love. Open your soul to them.Love not only your loved ones, but your neighbors … your coworkers … strangers … your brothers and si sters in humanity. Offer anyone you meet a smile, a kind word, a kind gesture, a helping hand.Love not only neighbors and strangers … but your enemy. The person who is cruelest to you, who has been unkind to you … love him. He is a tortured soul, and most in need of your love. And most of all, love yourself. While others may criticize you, learn not to be so hard on yourself, to think that you’re ugly or dumb or unworthy of love … but to think instead that you are a wonderful human being, worthy of Happiness and love … and learn to love yourself for who you are. Finally, know that I love you and always will. You are starting out on a weird, scary, daunting, but ultimately incredibly wonderful journey, and I will be there for you when I can. Godspeed.Love, Your Dad。

ROCKEFELLER’S LETTER TO HIS SON
ROCKEFELLER’S LETTER TO HIS SON------DO IT RIGHT NOWA Thousand Years of Ice★2010-5-20 Life is a great campaign.Motto: opportunity is created by opportunity.Bad habits can control us and decide whether to fail or succeed, which are easy to get used to, but tough to get rid of.Succeeding accomplishing the application of a good idea is more worthy than only thinking out a thousand excellent ideas at home.(To conquer you have need to do,to do again, ever to do!And your security would be insured.)December24,1897Dear John:The words from smart people are easy to be memorized. There is a good saying from a person of wisdom, “education contains many aspects, but it itself doesn’t teach you anything”! This great person had shown us a truth: if you don’t take any action, even the most useful, beautiful and available philosophies are useless.I always believe that opportunity is created by opportunity. Any seemingly excellent plan has disadvantage, though just a common plan it is. However if you would really implement it and keep on, that should be better than a good plan which has been given up halfway, because the former is fighting all the time, but the later is wasting allprevious efforts. As I mentioned above, there is no secret of success. In order to obtainpositive results in life, owning exceptional intelligence and special skills is certainly fine, but if without, that doesn’t matter. As long as you could work vigorously, you would alsoapproach success. The sad truth is that most people haven’t remembered this warning, resulting in makingthemselves mediocre. Having a look at those ordinary people, you will find they are livingpassively, because what they have said is far more than what they have done, only speakingwithout doing anything whatsoever. Every one of them is good at finding excuses forhimself, so he would find all kinds of excuses to postpone until it has been proven that he istruly wrong or incapable to do anything or too late to do it.In contrast to those people, it seems that I am a bit smarter and more cunning. Gates haspraised me as a willing and active actor. I happily accept this praise, for I haven’t let it down.Acting vigorously is another characteristic of mine. I never like to be an armchair strategist, because I clearly understand no acting is without consequence. There is nothing in the world you can get without thinking out many ideas and making them into reality. As long as alive, it is certain that you must act. Many people admit that without the foundation of wisdom everything is useless, but the sadder thing is that even if you have got knowledge and wisdom, without acting, everything is still useless. Humans should learn to stop where they should stop. Prepare enough, but do not act all the time, since in the end this must lead to waste of time. In other words, everything must have a limitation. We can’t get into the trap of constant practicing and planning, but accept the reality: no matter how precise a plan is, we still can’t exactly predict the last solution.I can’t deny that planning is very important, but that is only the first step. Planning is not acting, and impossible to replace acting. Just like playing golf, without getting into the first hole, unlikely to get the second it is. Acting can resolve everything. Without acting, nothing occurs. Anyway, no one can buy the insurance of absolute security, but what we can do is to bedetermined to implement our plans. All those who lack of action have a bad habit in common: they like to keep everything as it were now, and refuse any change. I think this is a foul habit full of deceit and self-destruction. Because everything is changing like human’s living and ding. But because of inner scare (about future), many people resist changing, even though the situations now are not satisfactory. Seeing those who should have succeeded, but gained nothing valuable, you would find it difficult to resist the temptation not to pity them.Yes, it is true that about unknown future everyone would feel more or less worried or scared, or question whether to do or not when making some pivotal decisions. But those who like implementing soon would ignite soul with determination, and then think out all kind of methods to accomplish their dreams, and meanwhile prepare enough courage to conquer difficulties. Many people lack of actions are naïve and like letting everything go by nature. They naively assume that others would care about them. In fact, except themselves nobody is interested in their troubles, for people only fancy their own things. Like business, the more profit we could get, the more active we would become, for whether to succeed or fail doesn’t matter to others. At such time, we’d better work hard more. If too lazy or scared, result would undoubtedly be disappointing. As long as a person can rely on himself, he won’t let himself down, meanwhile on the other hand will add more opportunities to control his life. The clever only think to make something happen. The most frustrating thing in life is that always been thinking too much you have, which not only leads no enough time left to accomplish, but makes you worry too much about numerous steps in the process and then feel shocked, sacred. Therefore all are in vain factually. We must admit that no one can accomplish all things. Clever people understand not all actions lead to good results, but only wise actions can bring about significant consequences. As a result, they only do the works which is most relevant to target and can cause positive effects. Therefore clever people can make the most valuable contribution, and get the best return. To eat an elephant, you must bite mouth by mouth. So does work! Trying to accomplish all things must waste many opportunities. My motto is: Rockefeller doesn’t treat emergency fairly. Many people make themselves passives, for they always do something until all conditions have been got. Life is full of opportunities, but none perfectible. Those passives are common all their lives, just because they always want to get everything prepared and then do something. This is bloody idiot’s way! We must compromise life to believe that the opportunity we have in hand right now is what we really need, which can help you avoid the swamp of forever crazy waiting before implementing. We are pursuing perfection, yet, in real life, human have never got perfectible things, but only more approaching perfections. Only doing something until all are ready, it must lead to waiting forever and letting opportunity to others. Those people can never leave their parents. To become the kind of person “I want to do now”, stop all day dreams and always think of what to do right now. Those words, like tomorrow, next week, future, etc. are familiar with the word: impossible.Everyone has experienced the days when losing all confidence and doubted self-ability, especially in failure or setback. However the person who knows the art of implement can overcome barricade with strong willpower. He would tell himself everyone can fail, sometimes very tragically; he would tell himself: no matter how much I have prepared or predicted, in real doing, it still can’t avoid failure. The sad truth is that passives never consider failure as an opportunity of study and growing up, but all the time they tell themselves: maybe I am really not able to, which leads to fail joining future implementing. Most people believe: think and you will succeed, but I treat it as a lie. You can buy a dozen of good ideas for a mere cent. Good idea is just the first step of a series of actions, and you still need prepare and then plan the next step, and then the third. In this world there isn’t short of the person full of good ideas, but extremely short of the person who not only can think out a good idea but implement it until success. How to judge a person’s ability are not that how many things he has contained in his brain, but how many actions he has done. Everyone trusts the person patient and diligent to take a work, thinking: this person can speak and act, so he must know how to do it well! I have never heard that a person gets praise before disturbing others or having not implemented or only implement when getting order. Those leaders at industry, government and army are all capable and 100% self-starters. Thosewho always watch and never implement can never be leaders. No matter whether you are active people or reactive, they are both up to habit. Habit is like a rope. If we could weave one every day, it would finally become a very thick one which is strong enough, impossible to break. Habit rope leads us to mountain peak or low ebb, which depends on a good habit or a bad one. Bad habit can control our success or not, which is easy to get, but difficult to serve. Good habit is hard to cultivate, but easy to persist. My son! Life is like a great campaign. To win, you must work harder, harder and harder, forever hard, in which case that can guarantee your safety.Merry Christmas! I believe there is no better gift than this letter at such special moment.Love Dad!。

More than 8,600 people aged 18 to 60 were asked to play online brain games designed by the researchers to improve their memory, reasoning and other skills, for at least 10 minutes a day, three times a week. They were compared to more than 2,700 people who didn’t play any brain games, but spent a similar amount of time surfing the Internet. All participants were given an “IQ test’ before and after the experiment.①Researchers found the people who did the brain training didn’t do any better on the test after six weeks than people who had simply been on the Internet. “If you’re playing these games like SNAKE (贪吃蛇) because they’re fun, that’s absolutely fine,” said Adrian Owen, the study’s lead author. “But if you’re expecting these games to improve your IQ, our studies suggest they don’t work.”①It’s also found that brain games which are supposed to improve memory, reasoning and other cognitive (认知的) skills are played by millions of people worldwide, though few studies have examined if the games work. Not many studies suggest the skills used in these brain games transfer (迁移) to the real world.①Instead of playing brain games, the professor, Kramer said people would be better off getting some exercise. He said physical activity can help produce new brain cells.①Other experts said brain games might be useful, but only if they weren’t fun. “If you set the level for these games to a very high level where you don’t get the answers very often and it really annoys you, then it may be useful,” said Philip.①If people are enjoying the brain games, they probably aren’t being challenged and might as well be playing a regular video game. Philip said people should consider learning a new language or sport if they really want to improve their brain power. “Computer games were not an easy shortcut. Getting smart is hard work.” he added.36.According to the article, ________ is NOT useful to develop brain power. A.learning a language B.getting some physical exercise C.playing challenging games D.playing fun games37.What can we infer from the studies in the article?A.Many studies show that brain games are an effective way of improving IQ.B.Few studies suggest the skills used in these brain games transfer to the real world. C.People may get smarter if they do more physical activities such as running and swimming.D.Surfing the Internet may be more effective in improving cognitive skills than video games.38.The structure of the article may be ________.A.B.C.D.39.What would be the best title for the article?A.Does SNAKE Make You Smarter?B.Is Getting Smarter as Easy as Playing Games?C.How Can We Play Brain Games Well?D.How Can We Get Smarter?

They get high grades, all right, but only by becoming dull and diligent students, their noses always stuck in a book. How, then, do we account for Paul Melendres? Melendres, now a freshman at the University of New Mexico, was 伽ient-body president at Valley High School in Albuquerque. Hejoined the soccer and basketball teams of his school, exhibited at the science fair, was chosen for the National Honor Society and he achieved straight A’s in all his classes. How do super-achievers like Melendres do it? Brains aren’t the only 咖wer. “Top grades don’t always go to the brightest students;1 declares Herbert Walberg, professor of education at the University of Illinois at Chicago, who has conducted major studies of super-achieving students.“Knowing how to make the most of your innate abilities counts for more. Infinitely more."Hard work isn’t the whole story, either. “It’s not how long you sit there with the books open,”said one of the many A students we interviewed. “It’s what you do while you're sitting” Indeed, some of these students actually put in fewer hours of homework time than their lower-scoring classmates. The kids at the top of the class get there by mastering a few basic techniques that others can readily learn.Set priorities. Ibp students brook no intrusions on study time. Once the books are open or the computer is booted up,phone calls go unanswered,TV shows unwatched, snacks ignored. Study is business; business comes before recreation,Study anywhere-or everywhere. A cross-country runner who worked out every day used the time to memorize biology terms. Another student posted a vocabulary list by the medicine cabinet and learned a new word every day while brushing his teeth.Get organized. In high school, McCray ran track, played rugby and was in the band and orchestra. “I was so busy, I couldn't waste time looking for a pencil or missing paper. I kept everything right where I could put my hands on it,” he says.Among the students we interviewed, study times were strictly a matter of personal preference. Some worked Jate at night when the house was quiet. Others awoke early. Still others studied as soon as they came home from school when the work was fresh in their minds. All agreed, however, on the need for consistency,5L Which of the following statements might Herbert Walberg agree with?A. High IQ alone may not be the guarantee of top grades.B. A super-achiever has to devote all his spare time to study.C. Innate abilities do not make much difference to your grades.D. The brighter the students, the greater their chances of success.52. In Paragraph Three, the author stresses the importance of_______A. PracfceB. disciplineC. efficiency D, carefulness53‘Top students brook no intrusions on study time" (Para, 5) means that they_____A. never ask any questions while studyingB, don’t want other people to tell them how to studyC‘ consider study more important than anything elseD. don’t allow other things to interrupt their study54. What tips might McCray offer to other students?A. Join a school organization.B. Put things in their right places*C‘ Study anywhere at any timeD. Learn as much as you can.55. What can we learn about study times from the last paragraph?A. Study times can be adjusted every day.B. Study times vary from person to person.C. There are no best study times for a student.D_ Study times are crucial for academic excellence.56. What is the topic of the passage?A. Grades and education.B. Hard work in high schools.C‘ Balancing study and play, D. Secrets of top students‘Passage TwoCleaning clothes usually requires soap and water to remove stains and smells, and a tumble 丨n the dryer or an afternoon on the clothesline to dry. The time and energy needed to turn a heap of dirty laundry into a pile of clean clothes might make people wish for clothes that just clean themselves. That wish is a step closer to coming true. Recent experiments show that cotton fabric coated with the right mixture of chemicals can dissolve stains and remove odors after only a few hours in the sun. “The technology can be applied to all kinds of fabrics and their related products,” says materials scientist Mingce Long. He helped develop the treated cotton with his colleague Deyong Wu.The handy fabric gets its self-cleaning abilities from a chemical mixture that coats the cotton threads. The coating includes substances known as photocatalysts, which trigger chemical reactions in light. One of those photocatalysts, called titanium dioxide (二氧化钛),helps sunscreen block the sun. Another, called silver iodide (破化银),is used for developing photographs.Researchers have previously shown that titanium dioxide mixtures could remove stains in clothes — but with exposure to ultraviolet, not visible, light. (The waves of ultraviolet light are more energetic and shorter than those of visible light) Other studies have demonstrated that silver iodide can speed up chemical reactions in sunlight*“We knew that self-cleaning cotton fabrics with titanium dioxide coating had already been developed, but they cannot work, or they work weakly, under sunlight,” Long says. “If we want to use the fabrics in daily life, we must develop cotton that cleans itself under daylight." Long and Wu created just such a fabric, working for years to perfect the recipe for a liquid dip that left cotton coated with the titanium dioxide mixture. Then they added particles of silver iodide, which boosted the fabric’s self-cleaning ability in the sun. In laboratory tests, their creation was nearly seven times better at removing stains than titanium dioxide alone,The scientists can’t start selling their self-cleaning cotton just yet; they still need to make sure the coated cotton won’t harm those who wear it. Although titanium dioxide is used in some foods, recent experiments have shown that it can cause health problems if it gets in the lungs. So before the material can be worn, scientists need to find a way to make it safe,57. The materials developed by Mingce Long can clean themselves by_______.A. being soaked in a mixture of chemicalsB. being exposed only to ultraviolet lightC being exposed to sunlight for a few hoursD, being hung in high-temperature environments58* The research conducted by Long and his colleagues_______■A. is based on previous studiesB* has caused a debate among scientistsC. is pioneer work in a new fieldD. poses a challenge to other scientists59. Long’s major concern over the self-cleaning materials is whether________A. their cleaning ability can lastB. it is safe to wear themC‘ their cleaning effect is satisfactoryD. it is cost-effective to produce them60. We can learn from the laboratory tests that their research_______.A. has left much to be desiredB. has yet to produce convincing resultsC. will yield huge economic benefitsD. can be considered a success61. It can be learned from the last paragraph that self-cleaning clothes_______•A. prove to be better than expectedB. are still at the experimental stageC. will soon be put into the marketD. may produce more harms than benefits62. What is the major topic of the passage?A. The effectiveness of self-cleaning fabrics.B. The application of self-cleaning technology.C. The development of self-cleaning materials.D. The necessity of self-cleaning clothes.P a ssa g e T h re eTHE digital attack of e-books and Amazon-style e-tailers has put bookstores at risk. Digital books are expected to outsell print titles by 2015 in Britain and even sooner in America. With this change, physical bookstores appear to be on borrowed time. So, what is the future of the bookstore? This is a burning questicm on everyone's lips at a recent event at Foyles’s flagship bookshop in London. To remain successful, a bookstore must improve l*the experience of buying books’” says Alex Lifschutz, an architect, He suggests an array of approaches: “small, quiet spaces sheltered with books; larger spaces where one can dwell and read; other larger but still intimate spaces where one can hear talks from authors about books." Exteriors must buzz with activity, entrances must be full of eye-catching presentations. The trend for not only incorporating cafes in bookstores but also placing them on the top floor makes good sense. This draws shoppers upwards floor-by-floor, which is bound to encourage people to linger longer and spend more. There are plenty of ways to delight customers. The consensus is that bookstores need to becomecultural destinations where people are prepared to pay good money to hear a concert, see a film or attend a talk. The programming will have to be intelligent and the space comfortable. As shoppers often browse in shops only to buy online later, some wonder whether it makes sense to charge people for the privilege.A more attractive idea might be a membership scheme like (hose offered by museums and other cultural venues. Unlike reward cards, which offer discounts and other nominal benefits, a club membership could provide priority access to events and a private lounge where members can eat, drink and meet authors before events. Different memberships could tailor to the needs of children and students. To survive and thrive, bookstores should celebrate the book in all its forms: rare, second-hand, digital, self-printed and so on. Readers should have the option of buying e-books in-store, and budding authors should have access to self-printing book machines, an important source of revenue in America. The bookstore of the future will have to work hard. Service will be knowledgeable and personalized, (he inventory expertly selected, spaces well-designed and the cultural events appealing. Whether bookstores are up to the challenge is not clear. The fate of these stores is a cliff-hanger.63. The first paragraph implies that without effective countermeasures_______.A. books on physics will die out soonB. printed books will outnumber e-booksC. no bookstores can survive digitalizationD. traditional bookstores will be short-lived64. The main idea of the second paragraph is that_______.A. the layout and atmosphere will be vital for bookstoresB. future bookstores should provide quick servicesC. advertising is critical to sales at future bookstoresD. bookstores should provide drinks on each floor65. All of the following are approaches suggested to boost sales EXCEPT_______.A. widening the range of servicesB. adopting the membership schemeC. issuing reward cards to customersD. making bookstores recreational66* The underlined word “celebrate” as is used in this passage probably means ______.A. spendB. observe C, commemorate D. embrace67. The last paragraph of this passage is concerned with______fA. current difficulties facing bookstoresB. challenges facing bookstores of the futureC. great opportunities for various bookstoresD. the easily achievable goal of future bookstores68. This passage can be best entitled 一_____.A. E-Publish or PerishB. Never Too Old to ReadC. The Future of the BookstoreD. Lower Value of Physical BooksP a s sa g e FourLong before the iPhone made him the god of gadgets, Steve Jobs launched his tech career by hacldng land lines to make free long-distance calls. Bob Dylan’s band, the Golden Chords, lost a high-school talent competition to a tap dancing act. Behind every success story is an embarrassing first effort, a stumble, a setback or a radical change of direction. It’s these first clumsy steps on the road to fame and fortune that fascinate writer Seth Fiegerman, who edits the blog , a collection of case studies on the origins of famous careers.“When you see someone who's very successful, you almost imagine that it was an inevitable conclusion, that they’re a genius, that they were destined for great things,” says Fiegerman, who began the blog in 2009, after an early setback in his own career. “I think the big takeaway is failure and setbacks, far from being uncommon, are in many ways essential.,’After Fiegerman, now 26, graduated from New York University in 2008,he landed a first job as a research editor at Playboy magazine. But he had worked there for just half a year when management announced that most of the staff would soon be laid off. As unemployment loomed, Fiegerman felt adrift. He began to explore the Playboy archives, discovering a valuable wealth of interviews with celebrities ranging from Marlon Brando to Malcolm X. Many of these successful people shared tales of their less promising early days, and Fiegerman quickly became obsessed with these origin stories. He began reading biographies with great interest and requesting interviews with writers and musicians he admired, using the blog to document the fits and starts that began the careers of the famous and the infamous. Success, he learned, was less a matter of innate talent and more the product of perseverance, a willingness to stumble and stand up again and again.“You kind of assume that great geniuses [are] like Mozart," Fiegerman says. But few successful people were children of highly unusual talent and these children don’t necessarily find success, “Most people don’t stick to it ”Like his subjects, Fiegerman found that his own early setback wasn’t permanent. He landed a new job in journalism, and today he works at the tech news website Mashable, covering, appropriately enough, start-up businesses. While he has less time for the blog, he hopes his collection of origin stories will help other young people realize it’s OK to fail.69. Steve Jobs and Bob Dylan are mentioned to show that .A. success is hard to achieve for most ordinary peopleB. successful people share certain good qualitiesC a good beginning is important for a successful careerD. setbacks are nothing unusual in successful careers70- The underlined word “takeaway” (Para. 2) probably means “ ’,.A. a point to be rememberedB* a threat to your good healthC_ some food to be eaten elsewhereD. a barrier to a successful career71. Fiegerman became interested in the origin stories_______A. while he was working for a magazineB. after he was laid off by a magazineC. after he set up a news websiteD. when he was creating his blog72. According to Fiegerman, which of the following is critical to success?A. Patience.B. Intelligence.C. Persistence.D. Opportunity.73. Fiegerman’s purpose in creating the blog is to_______.A. introduce new strategies to deal with setbacksB. encourage people to see failure in perspectiveC. advise people on how to start new businessesD‘ share the success stories of famous people74. Which is probably the best title for the passage?A. Tips for A Successful CareerB. Success Is Not EverythingC. All Roads Lead to RomeD. Failure Is the Mother of SuccessP a s s a g e F iveThe scandal at Harvard University in which authorities are investigating whether nearly half of a class of 279 students cheated on a take-home final exam raises a number of questions, including this: Does everybody cheat?“ Dozens of Harvard University students may have wrongly shared answers on a final exam, an unprecedented" case of suspected academic dishonesty. Sanctions for students found guilty of cheating include leaving Harvard for a year.Harvard, like most U.S. colleges and universities, has never had an honor code, although the Associated Press reports that it is giving “renewed consideration" to the idea as a result of the scandal. So, does everybody cheat? Not quite, but studies show that most students cheat at one time or another.A survey of 40,000 high school students found that more than half of teenagers said they had cheated on a test m Ihe previous year, and 34 percent said they had done it more than twice. One-third of the students said that they had plagiarized an assignment with the help of the Internet. The consequences for the country may be significant. A 2009 study about the relationship between high school attitudes and behavior and later adult conduct found that people who cheated on exams in high school two or more times are more likely to be dishonest later in life than those who never cheated in high school.Meanwhile, we've seen successive scandals involving cheating by the adults in school 一 teachers and principals — as a result of the growing importance of standardized tests. As the stakes associated with the scores have risen — the tests are used to gauge not only student achievement, but also teacher effectiveness, school and district quality ~ more people have taken desperate measures to ensure better scores. Not an excuse, just an explanation.Modem technology makes cheating much easier. Cheating cases have been documented in 30 states over the past three academic years. Some students, including those at virtual schools, sometimes put entire quizzes on the Internet, and the same exams are used repeatedly by teachers.Back at Harvard, a culture of cheating persists, here's a lot of pressure internally and externally to succeed at Harvard, and when kids who are not used to failing feel these things, it can really bend their eliiics in ways I didn't expect to see,” author Eric Kester told ABC News,75. The word “unprecedented,,is used in Paragraph Two to emphasize that—____,A. the causes of these cases of cheating had remained a mysteryB. such large-scale cheating was something unheard of at HarvardC. there had never been any cheating at Harvard beforeD. such cases of cheating had been left unreported by the media。

用英语给约翰的爸爸写一封信作文
用英语给约翰的爸爸写一封信作文全文共6篇示例,供读者参考篇1Dear Mr. Smith,Hi! My name is Tommy and I'm in John's class at Oakwood Elementary School. I'm writing this letter to tell you all about your son John. He's one of my best friends and I really like having him in my class.John is really good at lots of things. He's the best reader in our whole class! Whenever we have to read out loud, John volunteers to go first because he can read so well without making any mistakes. His favorite books are the Harry Potter ones and he's read all of them like a million times. I only read the first three because the other ones are kind of hard and have too many big words. But John understands everything!John is also a really fast runner. At recess, we all play games like tag and freeze dance on the playground. John is impossible to catch because he's so speedy! He runs around the whole playground without even getting tired. Sometimes I get a little jealous because he's so good at running and I get tired after justa few minutes. But it's still fun to try to catch him even though I never can.In class, John helps me a lot with my work, especially math. Math is my worst subject but John is a total brainiac when it comes to numbers. He's the first one done with his math worksheets every time and he always gets perfect scores on tests. When I get stuck, John is really nice about explaining it to me in a way I can understand. With his help, I'm starting to get a little better at math, but he's still way ahead of me.You should be really proud of how smart and talented John is in school. But what I like best about him is just what a good friend he is. John is always looking out for the other kids and making sure nobody is getting picked on or feeling left out. If someone is being mean, John sticks up for the kid getting bullied. He's not afraid to tell the bullies to stop and then he'll go hang out with the kid who was teased to make them feel better. At lunch, if someone doesn't have someone to sit with, John invites them over to our table. He doesn't care if the kid is shy or weird or not part of the popular crowd. John thinks everyone should have friends to eat lunch with. I try to follow his example and be friendly like that too.One time, this new kid David joined our class in the middle of the year. He was really quiet and didn't have any friends yet. A couple mean kids started teasing him for his haircut and his glasses. John saw what was happening and went right over to stop them. Then he brought David over to sit with us at lunch and introduced him to the group. Now David is part of our friend group, all thanks to John.John is also really funny and makes me laugh every day. He's always cracking jokes and doing silly voices during our free reading time. But he knows when it's time to be serious too and pays attention to the teacher. I wish I could be as well-behaved as him sometimes! At recess, John is a master at all the games we play like four square, kickball, and wall ball. He's really good at strategizing and picking kids for the teams to make sure they're even. And if we can't agree on the rules for a game, John always comes up with a fair solution that everyone is okay with. He's just really good at resolving conflicts like that so there's no arguments.I could go on and on about all the reasons John is such a great friend and student. He really is the total package - smart, athletic, caring, and fun to be around. I'm sure you already know how awesome your son is, but I wanted to let you know from abest friend's perspective. John makes coming to school so much better for me and all his friends. We're lucky to have him in our class!Your son is going to grow up to be an amazing person, just like you Mr. Smith. Thank you for raising such a wonderful boy.Your friend,Tommy篇2Dear John's Dad,Hi! My name is Sammy and I'm in 3rd grade. Our teacher Mrs. Roberts gave us a really fun assignment - we have to write a letter to the parent of one of our classmates. I picked you because John is my best friend and I want you to know what a great kid he is.John and I met on the first day of 1st grade. We were both really shy and didn't know anybody. But then we noticed we were both wearing Spiderman shirts and that's how we became friends. From that day on, we've been inseparable! We do everything together at school - we sit together at lunch, we playtogether at recess, and we even got to be partners for the science fair last year.I'll never forget the time John saved me from getting in big trouble. It was during art class and I accidentally knocked over a whole bottle of paint. Red paint went everywhere! I was so scared I was going to get yelled at. But John took the blame for me and said it was his fault. He's such a loyal friend. I still owe him one for that!John is really good at sports too. He's the best player on our school's soccer team. At our last game, he scored 4 goals! Whenever there's a big game, I make sure to sit with John's family to cheer him on. Your whole family gets so excited, especially you. You're always yelling words of encouragement from the sidelines. John gets this huge smile whenever he hears you cheering for him. It's really cool how supportive you are of his athletics. But John isn't just an athlete, he's really smart too. He gets good grades and always finishes his homework on time. Whenever I have trouble with an assignment, John is the first person I ask for help. He's able to explain things in a way that's easy to understand. I don't know what I'd do without him to help me study! One of my favorite things about John is how funny he is. He's always cracking jokes and making our whole friend group laugh. Remember that time in 2nd grade when he came to school with his shirt on backwards for April Fool's Day? And he acted like nothing was wrong the whole day? We all played along and pretended not to notice. It was so silly but it made the day really fun.John has such a good heart too. If he ever sees someone getting picked on or left out, he makes an effort to be kind to them. Like last year when that new kid David joined our class halfway through the year. A lot of people didn't want to be his friend at first because he was different. But John went right up and introduced himself. Now David is part of our friend group! I really admire how caring and inclusive John is.Even though we're still just kids, John is an amazing person. He's funny, athletic, smart, and an awesome friend. I'm lucky to have him in my life. Your family should be really proud of the young man he's becoming.I hope this letter helps you see what a great son you have, Mr. Wilson. Please tell John I said hello. I can't wait for 4th grade so we can make more amazing memories together!Your son's best friend,Sammy篇3Dear Mr. Smith,My name is Billy and I'm one of John's classmates. I'm writing this letter to tell you what a great friend your son is and how much he means to me and the rest of our class.John is the kindest and most caring person I know. He's always looking out for others and trying to help in any way he can. Just the other day, I dropped all my books in the hallway and John was the first one to come over and help me pick them up. He didn't laugh or make fun of me, he just smiled and gathered my things without me even having to ask. That's just the kind of guy John is.John is also really smart and good at his schoolwork. I remember a few weeks ago we had a really hard math test that I was super stressed about. John could see how worried I was, so he stayed after school to help me study and go over the problems I was having trouble with. Thanks to John's tutoring, I ended up doing really well on that test! He's always willing to lend a hand to his friends when we need some extra academic support. But it's not just about schoolwork - John is an all-around great athlete too. At recess, he's always the first one chosen for kickball or basketball because everyone knows he's an amazing player. But get this - even though John is the best athlete in our grade, he never brags or shows off. He celebrates his teammates' successes just as much as his own. John has this amazing ability to make everyone feel included and important, no matter their skill level.I have to tell you about the time John really went above and beyond to be a good friend though. A few months ago, my dog Buster ran away from home. I was so sad and worried sick about him. John noticed how upset I was, so he got all our friends together and we spent days putting up Missing posters and searching the neighborhood. We finally found Buster a week later, scared but thankfully unharmed, just a few blocks away. I can't thank John enough for rallying the troops and dedicating so much time and energy into helping me find my best furry friend. On top of being kind, smart, athletic and a great leader, John is also hilarious! He's always cracking jokes to make us laugh when we're feeling down. Just last week, our teacher Mrs. Wilson was going on and on about one of her boring science lessons. Ilooked over at John and he had this funny cross-eyed expression that matched how we all felt about the lecture. It took everything I had not to bust out laughing in the middle of class! John has this goofy, witty sense of humor that lights up any room.I could go on and on about what an incredible person your son is, Mr. Smith. Just know that all the kids in our class look up to John so much. We're lucky to have a friend like him who shows us what it means to be kind, hardworking, talented, loyal, and fun all at the same time. You must be one proud dad!Thank you for taking the time to read my letter. I hope I was able to show you what a great son you have. John makes our class and my life so much better every single day.Your son's friend,Billy篇4Dear Mr. Smith,Hi! My name is Tommy and I'm one of John's best friends from school. John is such a great pal and I really enjoy hanging out with him. I hope you and your family are doing well.I wanted to write to you to tell you about some of the fun times John and I have had together over the past few months. John is always coming up with the most imaginative games for us to play during recess and after school. Just last week, he invented this awesome new game where we pretended to be brave knights defending a castle from an evil dragon! John made cardboard swords and shields for us, and we spent the whole afternoon running around the playground, slaying the dragon and rescuing the princess (who was really just our friend Emily, but she played along).John has such a fantastic imagination and it really makes our games so exciting. I'll never forget the time he convinced the whole class that we were a crew of space explorers who had landed on an alien planet during our field trip to the museum! We spent the whole day "exploring" the exhibits and "studying" the fossils like they were alien artifacts. Even our teacher, Mrs. Roberts, got into the spirit of things and played the part of our mission commander. It was so much fun!I also really admire how kind and caring John is towards his friends. Just a couple weeks ago, our buddy Mike was having a rough day because he failed his math test. John could see Mike was feeling down, so he went out of his way to cheer him up.John offered to help Mike study for the next test, and even shared his chocolate bar with him at snack time to make him feel better. By the end of the day, Mike had a big smile on his face again, all thanks to John's thoughtfulness.John definitely has a great sense of humor too! I can't count how many times he's had our whole class cracking up with his silly jokes and impressions of our teachers. Just yesterday, he had everyone doubled over laughing when he imitated Mr. Wilson, our very serious science teacher, talking about the importance of vertebrates. John made his voice sound all deep andover-the-top, it was hilarious! Even Mr. Wilson had to chuckle a bit when he overheard it.I have to say, John is also one of the most determined people I know. Last month, we participated in the school's annual read-a-thon to raise money for new library books. Most kids got tired of reading pretty quickly, but not John! He plowed through book after book, determined to read the most out of anyone at our school. John ended up reading over 30 books all by himself over the course of the week! His passion and perseverance were really inspiring. On top of being such a great friend, John is also an excellent student. He always gets his homework done on time and paysclose attention in class. I'm sure that's one of the reasons why he gets such good grades. John has even helped me out a few times when I was having trouble with an assignment. He's so smart and patient when it comes to explaining things. I don't know what I'd do without John's tutoring sometimes!Speaking of school, I have to mention what an awesome athlete John is too. You should see him out on the soccer field or the basketball court - he's incredible! John is crazy fast and has some of the sickest moves. He's definitely one of the top players in our gym class. I'll never forget the time in our school basketball tournament when John scored the game-winning basket right at the buzzer. It was epic! The entire crowd went wild. John is a total sports hero. But don't worry, even with all his talents, John is still humble and down-to-earth. He never brags or makes others feel bad. To John, we're all equals and part of the same team whether we're in the classroom or on the playground. That's just the kind of great person he is - always thinking of others before himself.I could go on and on about what an incredible kid your son is, Mr. Smith. He's creative, funny, kind, smart, talented, and an all-around amazing friend. I'm so lucky to have John in my life.He makes every day an adventure and I can't wait to see what awesome games and ideas he'll come up with next!Thank you for taking the time to read my letter. I hope it gives you a glimpse into what a wonderful person John is. He really is the total package - a great student, incredible athlete, and fantastic friend. You and Mrs. Smith should be extremely proud of him. I know I certainly am.Your son's friend,Tommy篇5Dear Mr. Jones,Hi! My name is Michael and I am John's best friend from school. I am writing this letter to tell you about your son John because he is such an amazing kid.John and I have been buddies since the first day of kindergarten. I still remember when he walked into our classroom wearing that cool Spiderman backpack. I thought to myself "That kid looks fun, I want to be his friend!" So I went right up to him during recess and asked if he wanted to play on the swings together. From that day on, we became inseparable.Your son John is truly one of the nicest and most caring people I know. He always goes out of his way to make sure everyone feels included and has a friend to play with at recess. Sometimes there are kids who get left out because they are shy or new to the school. But John makes sure to introduce himself and invite them to join our games. He doesn't care if someone is a little different or can't run as fast. John makes sure there is a place for everyone.John is also hilarious and has a great sense of humor! He is always cracking jokes and doing silly voices from movies and TV shows we watch. I can't even count how many times John has made our whole class crack up laughing at one of his impersonations or funny stories. Whenever I'm having a bad day, I can always count on John to cheer me up and make me laugh. Most of all, John is an incredibly loyal friend. One time last year, there was a boy who was being mean to me and calling me names on the playground. John saw what was happening and immediately stood up for me. He told that bully "Don't you ever make fun of my best friend again or else!" The bully didn't bother me after that. John had my back and defended me like a true friend should. I know I can always rely on John to protect me and be there for me no matter what.In school, John works really hard and always tries his best. He pays attention to the teacher, participates in class, and turns in awesome work. John is one of the smartest kids I know! He is also really good at math and science. Sometimes when I don't understand something, John helps me out and explains it in a way that makes sense. With his help, I have been able to improve my grades a lot. John is an amazing student.Outside of school, John loves playing sports and being active. He is a total pro at soccer, basketball, you name it. John is super athletic and competitive in a good way. He always follows the rules and shows great sportsmanship, whether he wins or loses. I have so much fun whenever we have a chance to play sports together during recess or after school. Not only is John gifted when it comes to academics and athletics, he is also crazy talented when it comes to art! Your son is such an incredible artist, Mr. Jones. He can draw realistic portraits that look like photographs. John is also great at painting and can capture the most beautiful scenes full of vibrant colors. Whenever we have free time in class, John is always doodling or sketching away in his notebook. I'm amazed by his artistic abilities at such a young age. Most importantly, John is an awesome human being who makes the world a better place. He is kind, generous, and always thinking of others before himself. John goes out of his way to volunteer and help people whenever he can. Whether it's collecting canned foods for food drives, cleaning up litter at the park, or raising money for good causes, John is always willing to lend a hand. He inspires me to be a better person. There is so much more I could say about what an extraordinary kid your son John is, Mr. Jones. He is intelligent, gifted, caring, principled, and an all-around great friend. I feel so lucky to be able to spend time with him every day at school. John brightens up my life and makes me smile constantly. He is a blessing to have in my life.I hope this letter has helped you understand just how special your son is. John is destined for an amazing future because of his countless wonderful qualities. As his dad, you should be incredibly proud of the person he is becoming. Just know that you are raising an exceptional young man!Your son's best friend,Michael篇6Dear Mr. Smith,My name is Tommy and I'm in John's class at school. I'm writing this letter to tell you about your son John because he is my best friend. John is really great and I want you to know how amazing he is!First of all, John is the smartest kid in our class. He always gets the highest grades on tests and the teacher is always praising his work. In math class, he can solve even the hardest problems in his head before anyone else has time to write anything down. And in reading class, he can pronounce the biggest words without stumbling. I wish I was as smart as John! Not only is John really smart, but he's also the funniest guy I know. He's always cracking jokes and making everyone in class laugh until our sides hurt. One time, he did an impression of our teacher Mrs. Johnson and it was so silly and spot-on that we couldn't stop giggling for 10 minutes straight! John has a great sense of humor.Another awesome thing about John is that he's a fantastic athlete. At recess, he's the fastest runner and can outrun anyone on the playground. And during gym class, he's the best at every sport we play - basketball, soccer, you name it. I've seen him make incredible shots and gravity-defying catches. The gymteachers always choose John for their team first. He's going to be a big sports star one day, I just know it!But what really makes John such a great friend is that he's so incredibly kind and caring. If someone is feeling sad or left out, John always goes out of his way to cheer them up and make them feel included. Like this one time, a new kid named Timmy joined our class and didn't have anyone to play with at recess. John immediately went over and invited Timmy to join our game, showed him the rules, and made sure he felt welcome. That's just the kind of person John is - he never lets anyone feel alone. Not only that, but John is super generous too. He's always sharing his snacks and toys with everyone. Just last week, it was my birthday and I didn't think anyone remembered. But then John surprised me by bringing in his favorite action figures and letting me pick one to keep! It was the most awesomething gift ever. I felt so special.I could honestly go on and on about how extraordinary your son is, Mr. Smith. John is kind, funny, smart, talented, generous - he's quite simply the total package. I'm so lucky to have a best friend like him. Our whole class loves John, and I'm sure he's going to grow up to be an incredibly successful and well-loved person.Just thought you should know what a great kid you have! Thanks for reading my letter.Your son's best friend,Tommy。

BIRTHDAY LATTER--By Bob Garbon(This is the continuation of a Farther’s letter to his son on his 18th birthday)And now as you are an adult, everything you do at present and what you want to be in the future will entirely depend on you, on how you strive, work and fight. After all, this is a world wherein everything does not come at the click of your fingers nor by dreaming. You must exert efforts for result to come.Remember that the world does not revolve around you. You revolve around the world. The world does not fit you; you must fit into it. As you grow older, you will find out that what you get is just exactly the same amount of what you give. And for that reason, you should never stop trying and trying. There are a few things which you should follow as a matter of principle and as a way of life. Guidelines that would make you and could lead you on a path towards greatness and glory. Among them is the preservation of your integrity. This goes with your name, honour and your family. Another is giving to the best of your ability in everything and anything you do. Never show that you are too lax or unconcerned nor to be remiss in your responsibilities. Always aim high, for the best and to be number one. Show that you know how to repay kindness through your gratitude. Always be true to yourself and to others and avoid plasticity. People should not be taken for granted. Lastly, never fail in your believe and trust in God. He should not only save asyour pillar of strength and confidence and answer to your spiritural needs. He too, must equally be remembered in times of happiness and success. There are a lot of people who love you very dearly. Friends, males and females, relatives and admirers. The will come and they will go. Some for short time, others longer. We who are in the family will probably care for you longest. At least as long as we are alive and have that capacity to love and care. Hopefully you, too can provide the time, attention and care for us.On my end, the only thing I would aspire for is that I hope I have not failed as a father. I think I could proudly say to your brothers and sisters, to everyone, to God and to you that I tried.I pray that the best is still to come. Remember, we love you very much.Again, HAPPY HAPPY BIRTHDAYYoursDADDY译文:生日贺信致你的十八岁生日。

雾都孤儿Oliver TwistThe next day O liver travelled with Mr Brown low ,Dr Losberne,Mrs May lie and Rose back to his birthplace. He had been told a little of his history, and knew that the re would be more explanations at the end of this journey. He was anxious and uncertain, wondering what he would hear. But towards the end of the journey,he began to recognize familiar places, and in great excitement pointed the m out to Rose. The re was the path he had taken when he had run away. The re,across the fields, was the ‘baby farm’.The n,as They drove into the town,he saw the house of Mr So wer berry the undertaker, and the workhouse that had been his prison. They stopped at the biggest hotel in the town, and went in to their rooms.During dinner Mr Brown low stayed in a separate room, and the older members of the group went in and out with serious faces.Mrs May lie came back with her eyes red from crying. All this made Rose and O liver, who had not been told any new secrets, very nervous and uncomfortable. At nine o’clock Dr Losberne and Mr Brown lo w brought Monks into the room.O liver was very surprised;this was the same man he had bumped into once outside a pub,and seen another time with Fagin, looking in at him through the window of thecountry cottage.O liver was told that Monks was his half-brother,and the boy stared at him in shock and amazement.Monks looked back at him with hatred.‘We have the whole story here in the se papers,’said Mr Brown low ,putting the m on the table. ‘All we need now is for you to sign the m,Monks. And to tell O liver wha t happened.’Monks started hesitantly. ‘My father had arrived in Italy to collect the money he had inherited, when suddenly he fell ill. When he died,we found two papers in his desk. One was a letter to his girl;the other was a will.’‘What was the letter?’as ked Mr Brown low .‘It was written when he was ill, telling the girl how ashamed he was that she was pregnant. He asked her not to remember him as a bad man but as someone who had made a mistake. He reminded her of the day he’d given her the locket and ring.’O liver’s tears fell fast as he listened to the story of his father.‘And what about the will?’asked Mr Brown low .Monks was silent.‘The will,’continued Mr Brown low ,speaking for him,‘was in the same spirit as the letter. He talked of the misery of his marriage to his wife, and the evil character of you,Monks, his only son,who had been brought up by your mother to hate him.He left you and your mother an annual income of $800.The rest of his property he left to his girl Agnes and to their child,if it were born alive, and if it showed itself to be of a good, kind character. The money would only go to you,Monks,as the older son,if The younger turned out to be as evil as you.’‘My mother,’said Monks,‘burnt this will, and never sent the letter. The girl Agnes left her home in secret,so that herpregnancy would not bring shame on her family.I swore to my mother, when she was dying, that if I ever found my half-brother,I would do him all the harm I could. He would feel my hatred like a whip on his back.I paid Fagin to trap O liver into a life of crime. But the n he escaped, and that stupid, interfering girl Nancy talked to you.If I’d had the chance,I would have finished what I’d begun.’Monks stared at O liver, and his lips moved in a silent curse.‘And the locket and ring?’as ked Mr Brown low .‘I bought the m from Mr and Mrs Bumble, who had stolen the m from the nurse, who had stolen the m from Agnes, the dead girl.I’ve already told you how I threw the m into the river.Mr Brown low turned to Rose. ‘I have one more thing to explain,’he said to the girl.‘I don’t know if I have the strength to hear it now,’she murmured,‘having heard so much already.’Mr Brown low put his hand under her arm. ‘You have a great deal of courage, dear child,’he said kindly. He turned to Monks. ‘Do y ou know this young lady, sir?’‘Yes.’‘I don’t know you,’said Rose faintly.‘The father of poor Agnes had two daughters,’said Mr Brown low . ‘What happened to the other one,who was only a young child at the time?’‘When Agnes disappeared,’replied Monks,‘he r father changed his name and moved to a lonely place in Wales, where no one would know about the family shame. He died very soon afterwards, and this young daughter was taken in by some poor people. My mother hated Agnes and everybody connected with her.She hunted for this young sister, and made sure that her lifewould be unhappy. She told the poor people who had taken her in that the girl was illegitimate, and that she came from a bad family with an evil reputation. So the child led a life of miserable poverty-until Mrs May lie saw her by chance, pitied her,and took her home.’‘And do you see this young sister now?’asked Mr Brown low .‘Yes.Standing by your side.’Rose could hardly speak. ‘So…O liver is my nephew?’‘I can never call you aunt,’cried O liver. ‘You’l l always be my own dear sister!’They ran into each other’s arms, both of the m crying in their happiness.A father, sister and mother had been lost and gained, and it was too much for one evening. They stood for a long time in silence, and the others left the m alone. The court was full of faces;from every corner, all eyes were on one man-Fagin.In front of him, behind, above, below -he seemed surrounded by staring eyes. Not one of the faces showed any sympathy towards him;all were determined that he should hang.At last, the re was a cry of ‘Silence!’,and everyone looked towards the door. The jury returned, and passed close to Fagin. He could tell nothing from their faces; They could have been made of stone. The n the re was complete stillness-not a whisper, not a breath…Guilt y.The whole court rang with a great shout, echoing through all the rooms as the crowd ran out of the building to tell all the people waiting outside. The news was that he would die on Monday.Fagin thought of nothing but death that night. He began to remember all the people he had ever known who had been hung.He could hardly count the m.They might have sat in thesame prison cell as he was sitting in now.He thought about death by hanging-the rope, the cloth bag over the head, the sudden change from strong men to bundles of clothe s,hanging at the end of a rope.As his last night came, despair seized Fagin’s evil soul.He could not sit still, and hurried up and down his small cell, gasping with terror, his eyes flashing with hate and anger. The n he lay trembling on his stone bed and listened to the clock striking the hours.Where would he be when those hours came round again? In the middle of that Sunday night,Mr Brown low and O liver were allowed to enter the prison.Several strong doors were unlocked, and eventually They entered Fagin’s cell. The old robber was sitting on the bed, whispering to himself, his face more like a trapped animal’s than a human’s.‘You have some papers,Fagin,’said Mr Brown low quietly,‘which were given to you by Monks to look after.’‘It’s a lie!’r eplied Fagin, not looking at him. ‘I haven’t got any.’‘For the love of God,’said Mr Brown low ,very seriously,‘don’t lie to us now,on the night before your death. You know that Sikes is dead and Monks has confessed.Where are the papers?’‘I’ll tell you,O liver,’said Fagin. ‘Come here.’He whispered to him. ‘They’re in a bag up the chimney in the front room at the top of the house. But I want to talk to you,my dear.’‘Yes,’said O liver. ‘Will you pray with me?’‘Outside, outside,’said Fagin, pushing the boy in front of him towards the door. ‘Say I’ve gone to sleep-They’llbelieve you.You can take me out with you when you go.’The old man’s eyes shone with a mad light.‘It’s no good,’said Mr Brown low ,taking O liver’s hand . ‘He’s gone too far,and we can never rea ch him now.’The cell door opened, and as the visitors left,Fagin started struggling and fighting with his guards, screaming so loudly that the prison walls rang with the sound. They left the prison building in the grey light of dawn.Outside in the street, huge crowds were already gathering, joking and laughing, and pushing to get the best places near the great black platform, where the rope hung ready for its morning’s work.Less than three months later,Rose married Harry May lie.For her sake,Harry had abandoned his political ambitions, and had become a simple man of the church. The re was no longer any mystery about Rose’s birth, but even if the re had been,Harry would not have cared. They lived next to the church in a peaceful village.Mrs May lie went to live with the m,and spent the rest of her days in quiet contentment.Mr Brown low adopted O liver as his son. They moved to a house in the same quiet village, and were just as happy.Dr Losberne discovered suddenly that the air in Chertsey did not suit him.In less than three months he,too, had moved-to a cottage just outside the village, where he took up gardening and fishing with great energy and enthusiasm.Mr Brown low suggested that half the remaining money from the will should be given to Monks and the other half to O liver, although by law it should all have gone to O liver alone.O liver was glad to accept the suggestion.Monks went off with his money to the other side of the world, where he spent it quicklyand was soon in prison for another act of fraud. In prison he b ecame ill and died. The remaining members of Fagin’s gang died in similar ways in other distant countries, all except Charley Bates, who turned his back on his past life of crime and lived honestly,as a farmer.Noah Claypole was given a free pardon for telling the police about Fagin. He soon became employed as an informer for the police, spying on people and telling the police about anyone who had broken the law.Mr and Mrs Bumble lost their jobs and became poorer and poorer, eventually living in poverty in the same workhouse that They had once managed. In that quiet country village,Theyears passed peacefully.Mr Brown low filled the mind of his adopted son withknowledge, and as he watched the boy grow up,he was reminded more and more of his old friend,O liver’s fat her.The two orphans,Rose and O liver, led lives that were truly happy. The hardships that They had once suffered had left no bitterness in their gentle souls, and all their lives They showed the mercy and kindness to others that God himself shows to all things that breathe .第二天,奥利弗与布朗洛先生、罗斯伯恩医生、梅利夫人以及罗斯一起回到他的出生地。
