READING COMPREHENSION (10小题,每小题2分,共20分)Read the following two passages and answer the questions.Passage OneBenjamin Contreras works in the shipping department of a large publisher. When customers return damaged books, the damage often is not obvious to the clerks who unpack them. They sometimes place these books back on the warehouse shelves. The damaged books are then shipped out again to the next customer who orders them. That customer finds the damage, returns them again, and usually complains about the inconvenience.Benjamin thinks the company could avoid shipping out damaged books by creating labels that identify the books as damaged. The company could send the new labels to customers who want to return damaged books. When the damaged books arrived back at the warehouse with the new labels, the clerks would know to give the customer credit for the return and then destroy thebooks.Benjamin’s supervisor, Karen Horner, likes this idea and has the new labels made. She asks Benjamin to write a letter to customers, explaining how to use the labels. Karen decides that he also should write a complete set of instructions for returning books. This would prevent customers from shipping by the wrong method, sending the books to the wrong address, and so on. She also asks Benjamin to write a description of the ret urn process for staff in other departments because they often ask questions about it.Benjamin has read many sets of instructions and assumes that a description of a process would be very similar. He thinks he probably could just give other staff members a copy of the instructions he writes for the customers. Benjamin is concerned about the customers’ reaction to the instructions. He often talks with them on the phone and knows they are very busy and tend to be impatient. They may not read the instructions; some may be annoyed at even receiving them.26. Which department does Benjamin work in?A. Sales department.B. Shipping department.C. Accounting department.27. According to Benjamin, if there are labels that ________, the company can avoid shipping outdamaged books.A. tell the books are damagedB. show the books are newC. offer customers discounts28. Benjamin is asked to ________.A. design the labelsB. destroy the booksC. write an instruction29. Benjamin is customers’ reactions to the instruction.A. surprised atB. angry withC. concerned about30. Which of the following writings is applied by Benjamin?A. Object description.B. Process description.C. Mechanism description. Passage TwoFrom time to time, whatever our occupations are, we need to persuade others to see things our way. Often we have to use persuasion to favorably influence customers, suppliers and shareholders. Although persuasion is a skill valuable in any job, few people receive any relevant training -except professional salespeople. Selling, a dirty word to many people, is the art of persuasion. Everyone can benefit from learning the basic techniques of selling.Customers do not make buying decisions unless they recognize a need which the sales person can satisfy. You need to be able to ask the right questions in a way which is relevant to your customers' interests. If you can do so, the customer will answer fully and honestly, because he cansee a benefit in doing so. Once a customer acknowledges a need, he is more willing to listen to the benefits of the product. He will not necessarily be interested in the product itself, but in what it can do to satisfy his need.Generally speaking, salespeople employ five skills. First, they ask questions and really listen to the replies so they can identify the cu stomer’s needs exactly. Second, they describe those benefits of the product which me et that customer’s needs. Thi rd, they use evidence to support any claims made. Fourth, they overcome objections. Finally, they close the sale. These techniques can be used positively by us all, at work and in our daily lives.31. According to the passage, how can we favorably influence others?A. By considering things in their ways.B. By persuading them in favor of us.C. By listening to them effectively.32. According to the passage, which of the following statements is true?A. Persuasion is useful only in marketing and sales.B. READING COMPREHENSION (10小题,每小题2分,共20分)Directions: Read the following two passages and answer the questions.Passage One:Eye contact is a nonverbal technique that helps the speaker “sell” his or her ideas to an audience. Besides its persuasive powers, eye contact helps hold listener interest. A successful speaker must maintain eye contact with an audience. To have good rapport (关系) with listeners, a speaker should maintain direct eye contact for at least 75 percent of the time. Some speakers foc us exclusively on their notes. Others gaze over the heads of their listeners. Both are likely to lose audience interest and esteem. People who maintain eye contact while speaking, whether from a podium (讲台) or from across the table, are “regarded not only as exceptionally well-disposed by their target but also as more believable and earnest.”To show the potency of eye contact in daily life, we have only to consider how passers-by behave when their glances happen to meet on the street. At one extreme are those people who feel obliged to smile when they make eye contact. At the other extreme are those who feel awkward and immediately look away. To make eye contact, it seems, is to make a certain link with someone.Eye contact with an audience also lets a speaker know and monitor the listeners. It is, in fact, essential for analyzing an audience during a speech. Visual cues from audience members can indicate that a speech is dragging, that the speaker is dwelling on a particular point for too long, or that a particular point requires further explanation. As we have pointed out, visual feedback from listeners should play an important role in shaping a speech as it is delivered.26. This passage is mainly concerned with ________.A. the importance of eye contactB. the potency of nonverbal techniquesC. successful speech delivery27. As emphasized in the passage, a good speaker must _______ most of the time.A. focus on his or her notesB. maintain direct eye contact with the audienceC. be very persuasive and believable28. The word “target” in the last sentence of the first paragraph can best be replaced by _____.A. “destination”B. “goal”C. “audience”29. In daily life, when the glances of two passers-by happen to meet, what will these two personsinevitably do?A. Smile to each other.B. Try to make a conversation with each other.C. Neither of the above.30. Eye contact with an audience, according to the author, doesn’t help the speaker to _______.A. control and interest the audienceB. analyze his audience when he is startingC. gain audience esteemPassage Two:More than 65 percent of a company’s business comes from current customers. Those customers are not easily replaced, so it is every company’s job to keep its current customerssatisfied even as it is trying to attract new customers. After all, some of those new customers will come because they hear about the store from current customers. In the fast-paced world of retail (零售), customer loyalty is especially important. So many stores are selling the same products that retailers have to offer customers something more. That something more is their customer service. Discount coupons (商家的优待券), valet parking(代客泊车)(where parking is a problem), and free gift wrapping are just some of the extras retailers now offer.Another important facet of customer service is handling customer complaints. Retailers should not think of complaints as a nuisance. They should see them as an excellent opportunity for some free feedback, although it is true that a small percentage of customers do complain unjustly. But the vast majority of customers who complain are telling retailers what they need to hear. For this reason, retailers should (1) listen carefully, (2) respond positively, (3) admit a mistake immediately, or if a mistake has not been made, explain the reason for the confusion,(4) ask customers what they would like done, and (5) comply with their requests. Good customer service is the surest way to stand out from all of the other retailers.31. Why are current customers important to retailers?A. They shop at the same place from habit.B. They provide two-thirds of a company’s business.C. They are different from new customers.32. Many stores sell the same products. How can one retailer stand out?A. With discount coupons.B. Through heavy advertising.C. With the quality of its customer service.33. How can retailers get free feedback?A. By increasing profits.B. By paying attention to complaints.C. By promoting holiday sales.34. Most customers who complain are ______.A. doing it unjustlyB. just trying to get their money backC. telling the retailer what he should know35. If a mistake has not been made, a retailer should ______.A. offer a reason for the misunderstandingB. pretend it never happenedC. get an apology from the customerIV. TRANSLATION(4段短文,每段5分,共20分)Directions: Translate the following passages into Chinese:36. Listening carefully, using appropriate body language, and interpreting other people’s bodylanguage are just as important to good communication as speaking clearly and using appropriate words. A receiver is likely to remember a nonverbal message even after he or she forgets a specific verbal message.37. Eyes provide a most revealing facial expression and often are called “the windows of thesoul”. Eyes reveal feelings such as excitement, boredom, and concentration. Eyebrows also send various messages. Raised eyebrows may mean nervousness, surprise, or questioning, pinched together they may imply confusion or indecision.38. Use an agenda to determine and control the direction of the meeting. Problems arise whenmeeting participants stray from the topic---when attention drifts to peripheral issues or personal stories. A description is a verbal and visual picture of something. You might be asked to write adescription of an object or a mechanism, usually as part of a report or a manual. The product is wonderful, the service that they’re providing will have customers queuing up around the corner, and everybody is terribly optimistic about what lies ahead. Unfortunately it doesn’t always turn out to be the case that the business is going to be the most successful in the world. If you look at the categories of reasons as to why some businesses go under, what’s interesting is you find that a number of businesses go under because—particularly in smaller businesses—people perhaps don’t have as good a grip as they might on matter s financial, and as part of that we discover that the process of managing working capital seems to be a weak spot for many businesses. There’s a much heralded statist ic in the UK, which has replications in both the US and in continental and Western Europe, that about 70% of newly formed small businesses go out of business within the first two years, and that seems to be, broadly, a correct figure. If you then look at those 70% of businesses which go out of business within the first two years, there’ s another statistic which says that about three-quarters, about 75%, go out of business because of working capital problems—working capital being the funds that you have tied up on a day-to-day basis just to keep you going.26. It is of course necessary for them to look over their shoulders and say ‘this is what has happened in the past’, which is really useful for reporting purposes. After all, if a bank lends you money, they would want to have some statement of account at the end of the year whichsays ‘this is what we did with the money that you gave us’. But one of the problems is that, if you consider running a business as driving a car, the reporting statements are really like looking in the rear-view mirror, and seeing what has happened behind you.But what’s really important when you’re driving a car is what lies ahead. Though it’s important to know what’s behind you, to know where you’ve been and to learn the lessons from what’s happened, you should also need to take those lessons, scanning the environment and finding out what the economy is going to be like. You also need to know what your customers may or may not be doing, what your competitors are doing and what sort of cash requirements you are going to have. Therefore, it seems sensible to do a business plan which incorporates a cash-flow forecast for the future. It also seems sensible to do a forecast profit and loss account for the next year.31. What is a criticism of many accounting systems?A. They are very good at looking backwards.B. They are not good at looking backwards.C. They don’t look forwards at all.32. It is important for a bank to have some statement of account at the end of the year because it can________.A. makeup the mistakes made throughout the yearB. increase its credit among the customersC. gain additional profits in this way33. What is more important than looking backwards?A. Carrying out needs analysis on your customers.B. Bearing in mind the amount of cash that you need.C. Both A and B.35. According to the passage, which of the following statements is NOT true?A. You should know your customers as well as your competitors.B. A business plan is necessary for a cash-flow forecast.C. A forecast profit and loss account can help look backwards.V. TRANSLATION (20%)Translate the following passages into Chinese.36. A sales letter tries to persuade a potential customer to purchase a product or service. Like other persuasive messages, it involves gaining the reader’s att ention, establishing a need, showing how a product or service will meet that need, presenting supporting information, and providing for an easy way for the reader to respond. A sales letter might appeal to readers’ senses by describing how something looks, sounds, feels, smells, or tastes.37. Too much confidence can hurt you. If others see you as cocky, inflexible, or as a “know it all”, they will see you as self-centered and unrealistic about your own abilities. Preparing formal oral presentations is challenging. A long speech may last from 20 minutes to more than an hour. Within two days after the interview, you will want to write a brief follow-up letter to the interviewer, thanking him or her for the interview.
