were both in great anger."Never set foot in this house again!"father stormed. With tears welling up in my eyes,I rushed out of the flat and ran along the street. The street lights were shining, causing rather sad feelings.I wandered aimlessly.A young father who held a child in his arms walked past me.I felt as if I saw my childhood from another spac e:happy and carefree. But now …I don't know whether it is because I have grown up or because dad is getting old.We differ in ou r ways of thinking. We are just like two people coming from two different worlds. It feels like there is an iro n door between us that can never be opened.I wandered the streets, without a destination in mind.My heart was frozen on this hot summer night. As I w alked on,there were fewer and fewer people on the streets, until I had only the street lights to keep me co mpany. When I finally reached the high-rise apartment block in which I lived,I saw that the light was still o n.I thought to myself:"Is father waiting for me,or is he still angry with me"In fact,it was nothing.Perhaps, dad was throwing away some of his old stamps.Perhaps he thought they were useless.I never had the courage to tell him that I liked collecting stamps. All the lights were off except father's.Dad was always like this.Maybe he didn't know how to express himself. After shouting at me,he never sho wed any mercy or any moments of regret. This was how he always was.He has been a leader for so long that telling everyone else what to do has beco me his second nature. The light was still on."Am I wrong"I whispered, maybe…With the key in my hand,I was as nervous as I had ever been.At last,I decided to open the door.As soon as I opened the door, tears ran down my cheek s.I suddenly realized that the iron door that I had imagined between us did Bicycles",but since then, cars have taken over the count ry.There are too many vehicles and edestrians in the street now,so the roads are crowded nearly all the tim e,and even going a few kilometers can take up to an hour, which can explain the fact that it's very difficult t o travel across major Chinese cities. Now,new apps that help people register and find bikes are being used more and more across cities like Beiji ng.The new apps that let people share bicycles are easing, traffic, and reducing pollution.Cheng Li starte d using bike share services about six months ago.He said now he is using the car less and the bike more.Fo r Zhang Jian, the bike share revolution makes him recollect the old days."Now,when we're riding home fro m work, especially in the evening, when it's not rushed,it feels like we're reliving the past,"Zhang said. However, there is now a lot of competition among bike share providers because of their popularity. Some pr oviders are trying to flood the streets with bikes to be more visible.Sometimes there are so many bikes tha t they completely block the sidewalks. This has become a problem for city governments. It is not uncommo n for bike users to leave bikes in the middle of the street or on the sidewalk. This blocks cars and people in a lready crowded cities. In Beijing's southern district of Daxing, officials have been trying to fix the problem by seizing illegally parked bikes.VOA spoke to a woman who said,"Bike sharing is really convenient, but no one is taking care of the problem of illegally parked bikes."Behind her were several thousand seized it cannot be broken."I personally do not agree with the last part of his expression.I know habits ca n be learned and unlearned. But we also know it isn't a quick fix.It involves a process and a tremendous eff ort. Those of us who watched the lunar voyage of Apollo 11 were shocked as we saw the first men walk on the mo on and return to earth. But to get there, those astronauts had to break out of the tremendous gravity pull of the earth.More energy was spent in the first few minutes of lift-off,in the fist few miles of travel, than was used over the next several days to travel half million miles.Habits, too, have tremendous gravity pull. However, most people don't realize or admit it.Getting rid of b ad habits recall requires great willpower and some changes in our lives.Lift-off takes tremendous effort,bu t once we break out of the pull f gravity,we can enjoy unprecedente(空前的) freedom.Like any natural force, gravity pull can work with us or against s.The gravity pull of some of our habits ma y currently be keeping us from going where we want to go.But it is also gravity pull that keeps our world to gether and keeps the planets in their orbits and our universe in order. It is a powerful force, and if we use i t effectively,we can use the gravity pull of habit to create the order necessary to establish effectiveness in o ur lives.67.Why did the author quote the saying in the first paragraph?A.To support the author's opinion about the habit.B.Because a great educator asked the author to do it.C.To show the author was a wise man.D.Because the author liked the old saying very much.68.Why does the author say habits have powerful effects on our lives?A.Because a habit is like a cable and useful to our life.B.Because habits can be learned and unlearned.C.Because you can reap a character by sowing a habit.D.Because habits can constantly affect our character.69.What does the writer mean by referring to gravity pull?A.Ridding bad habits needs great willpower.B.To prove that the habits can work with us or against us.C.Breaking the gravity pull means enjoying freedom.D.The gravity pull is very important in our lives.70.Which can be the best title for this The climate crisis will displace 80 million people in sub-Saharan Africa alone.Elizabeth said, “I have been doing what I can. Inspired by the great Wangari Maathai, I founded a tree growing initiative that enhances food security for young Kenyans.” So far, they have grown 30,000 fruit trees to maturity, providing desperately needed nutrition for thousands of children. “Every day we see that when we look after the trees, they look after us. We are the adults on this Earth right now, and it is our responsibility to ensure that the children have food and water,” she added.4. What is the initiative intended for?A.Making policies. B.Raising money.C.Educating adults. D.Fighting climate change.5. What crisis are Kenyans encountering at present?A.Hunger. B.Sickness C.Water shortage. D.Economic risks.6. What has been achieved since 2016?A.3,000 trees have been planted.B.Green awareness has been raised.C.80 million people have been saved.D.School education has been guaranteed.7. Which of the following can best describe Elizabeth Wathuti?A.Friendly and talented. B.Caring and responsible.C.Honest and determined. D.Ambitious and humorous. Researchers from Carnegie Mellon University have demonstrated a more effective way to support learning and increase engagement. They used artificial intelligence to create a new genre of interactive, hands-on exhibits that includes an intelligent, virtual assistant to interact with visitors. When the researchers compared their intelligent exhibit to a traditional one, they found that the intelligent exhibit increased learning and the tim e spent at the exhibit. “Having artificial intelligence and computer vision turned the play into learning,” said Nesra Yannier, head of the project, who called the results “purposeful play.”Earthquake tables are popular exhibits. In a typical example, kids build towers and then watch them tumble on a shaking table. Signs around the exhibit try to engage kids in thinking about science as they play, but it is not clear how well these work or how often they are even read.Yannier led a team of researchers that built an AI-enhanced earthquake table outfitted with a camera, touchscreen, large display and an intelligent agent, NoRilla, that replaced the signs. NoRilla—a virtual gorilla—interacts with participants, taking them through different challenges and asking questions about why towers did or didn’t fall along the way and helping them make scientific discoveries. The pre-and post-tests and surveys revealed that children learned significantly more from the AI-enhanced intelligent science exhibit compared to the traditional exhibit while having just as much fun. Their experiment at the Science Center also showed that people spent about six minutes at the intelligent exhibit, four times the 90-second average of the traditional one.“This research will have lasting implications for future exhibit experiences at the Science Center,” said Jason Brown, the Henry Buhl Jr. director of the Carnegie Science Center. “Creating hands-on fun and inspirational exhibit experiences that scaffold science, technology, engineering or mathematics learning and discovery is what positions us as one of the most unique museums in the region.”8. What can we learn about AI enhanced intelligent science exhibits?A.They require more action than thinking.B.They’re less interactive an d instructional.C.They’re more like demanding learning activities.D.They increase the time people spent at the exhibits.9. Why did the author mention Earthquake tables?A.To introduce the background of the project.B.To reveal the drawbacks of traditional exhibits.C.To explain how intelligent exhibits help learning.D.To show the strengths and weaknesses of intelligent exhibits.10. Which aspect of the research does the last paragraph focus on?A.Its findings. B.Its principle. C.Its limitations. D.Its significance.11. What’s the best title of the passage?A.Intelligent Exhibits Turn Learning into PlayB.Intelligent Exhibits Replace Traditional OnesC.A New Genre of Exhibits Comes into the WorldD.Intelligent Exhibits Help Kids’ Learning and EngagementDo you ever hear a friend speak on a topic with the belief that “everyone”thinks the same way? Do you often find yourself surrounded in a social media feed that is completely tailored to you and your beliefs, reading along without the immediate realization?A social media echo chamber (回声壁) is when one experiences a tailored media experience that leave out opposing viewpoints and differing voices. Social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube connect groups of like-minded users together based on shared content preferences. As a result, people see and take in information according to our preexisting beliefs and opinions. Social media companies therefore rely on algorithms (算法) to assess our interests and flood us with information that wi ll keep our attention. The algorithms focus on what we “like”, and “share” to keep feeding content that makes us comfortable. In order to truly get access to all information and to evaluate our media, we must give ourselves the opportunity to step out of our comfort zone. While this becomes increasingly challenging, there are things we can do. The first step is to beef up your media consumption sources. Adding in a few media sources with differing opinions will allow you to at least understand what people are saying outside of your echo chamber. Next, read each thing you see with a critical eye. Make sure that each thing you accept as truth is truly fact. Lastly, attempt to search out reliable new sources that are known for trying their best to leave out false information. By accepting that our media buffet on social media is a product of our present beliefs and opinions, we can work to make sure we are not simply stuck in a social media echo chamber.12. What is a result of the social media echo chamber?A.People contact like-minded online users effectively.B.People keep reading for more differing viewpoints.C.People rely on algorithms to evaluate their interests.D.People only get information confirming their beliefs.13. What does “beef up”underlined in paragraph 3 mean?A.Track. B.Improve.C.Provide. D.Identify.14. Which of the following can help us get out of the echo chamber?A.Criticizing fake news on social media.B.Exposing ourselves to opposing voices.C.Researching primary sources of information.D.Accepting our present beliefs and opinions.15. What is the purpose of the text?A.To call on people to use algorithms frequently.B.To ask people not to take in information blindly.C.To promote the use of various social media sites.D.To inform people of new technology developments.Procrastination (拖延)makes people live under constant stress. Making changes will lead to positive results, like relieving stress and increasing the quality of work, family time and joy. But how to? 16◆Acknowledge the need to change. If you’re a master procrastinator, stop making excuses and acknowledge the reasons why procrastination is bad. 17◆Identify and understand your feelings. You may feel fearful about the size of a task, proud of your productivity, and anxious about your time. 18 However, could you break a huge project up into manageable tasks? You might need to say “no” more often to give the proper time and attention to the more important things. You can also set a time limit on your break, maybe 15 to 20 minutes.◆ 19If you find yourself with some free time and you need to convince yourself to start working on a difficult task, follow the five-minute rule. Force yourself to work on a task for just five minutes, with the understanding that you can quit after five minutes if you like. This simple mental trick is usually just to get you started. And it will often turn into much more than five minutes.◆Work on stuff earlier.20 But remember: Just because you start working on som ething doesn’t mean you have to finish.By starting, you get the juices flowing, allowing you to get more done than you anticipated. Additionally, you increase the quality of your work because every time you revise your thing, it gets better. So, remember: Fighting procrastination is a life-long battle, but it’s a winnable one.Five years ago, I left my job to work on a ship.

In the past, we just had the Internet while now we have the Internet of Things (IoT), which aims to get everything and everyone talking. Attaching sensors to “things”, such as cows, cars and refrigerators, and then assigning them unique IP addresses allow them to “talk” to the Internet. Of course, the IoT will involve much more than a handful of sensors. Networking company Cisco estimates that 50 billion Internet-connected devices and objects will be sending over data by 2020.36.How do researchers get everything and everyone talking?A.By establishing the IoT and launching a handful of sensors.B.By sending people to track them day and night and collect useful data.C.By communicating with them all the time through the IoT.D.By connecting sensors with them and appointing them unique IP addresses. 37.According to the passage, which of the following is NOT TRUE?A.IoT can help people do preventive maintenance and save money.B.IoT can help people monitor energy usage and observe price changes timely.C.IoT can help people adjust their habits and use electrical appliances more wisely.D.IoT can help people investigate things and update a lot of important data. 38.Besides its probably ending up being a fashion, what else do critics worry about the IoT?A.People will lose interest in it as quckly as the thrill over last year’s smartphone.B.Whether related companies will provide long-term software updates or not.C.Refrigerators and washing machines will be replaced by other devices in a few years.D.The software provided by companies will be outdated easily and quickly. 39.According to the passage, when owners of the Tesla Model S electric car received a recall notice, they ___.A.just waited in the car while the maintenance is being done through wireless update B.were required to go to the nearest 4S store to make some adjustments or repairsC.could definitely depend on the IoT to send them the charger plug to be fixedD.had to confirm the update with the help of the equipment provided by the company 40.What would be the best title for the passage?A.Craze is disappearing!B.It’s time to change!C.It’s all connected!D.The Internet is coming! It was a cold May morning when I received an intriguing (有趣的) email from an old high school friend inviting me to join a 10-day all-girls surf trip. I knew I had to say yes.The trip seemed simple enough. Ten women aged 30 to 45, all complete strangers, gathered on the coast of Portugal to try something new: surfing in the Atlantic Ocean.I have always loved traveling, so I eagerly sent an email to my boss seeking permissionfrom him to make the once-in-a-life trip.If there’s one thing I’ve learned over my past 33 years, it’s that adults typically spend their days mastering the things they’ve done before. It seems like we pride ourselves on becoming experts in whatever field we’ve fallen into, knowing more and more about less and less. Now, in theory, this is a great strategy, as it allows you to become really, really good at one particular thing, but it also kind of ends up leaving some skills lacking.I met my new surfing companions on the grass of the hotel lawn in a small surf town called Ericeira. Despite our different personalities and backgrounds, we were all united in a relentless desire to challenge ourselves, learn, tackle and grow. The shores at Ericeira, where the beginners learn to surf, are shallow and covered with slippery rocks. They make for softer waves but are difficult to navigate.Guided by our amazing coaches, together, we faced the waves. Sometimes, it poured with rain, and the waves crashed around us, but we were still out there. And with every slip and fall, words of encouragement filled the air.Honestly, I probably spent most of my days frozen to the bone, but that didn’t matter because a new level of genuine joy and personal achievement had been unlocked. Learning a new skill taught me the humility that can come from doing badly at something new, and the pride that develops when you finally manage to grasp something you’ve been working on.While surfing might not be my calling, trying it out inspired me to take more risks in life, to step outside of my comfort zone and to never stop believing in myself. You never know what you’re capable of if you don’t go out there and try.41.What motivated the author to join the surf trip to Portugal?A.Her love for surfing and improving existing skills.B.Her desire to reconnect with a high school friend and make new friends.C.Her passion for embracing challenges and exploring new places.D.The chance to take a break in Portugal from work.42.What is the author’s view on adults focusing on mastering one field?A.It blocks creativity and exploration.B.It is essential for career success.C.It disturbs one’s work-life balance.D.It narrows one’s abilities.43.Which of the following words best describe the author’s surfing experience?A.Tough but rewarding.B.Relaxing but unpredictable.C.Difficult but interesting.D.Tiring but meaningful.44.What can be inferred about the author?A.She discovered her true calling atter the trip.B.She used to lack confidence in herself.C.She became more willing to challenge herself.D.She went on to become an expert surfer.45.What wisdom did the author gain from the experience with surfing?A.The need to seek professional training in all new skills.B.The value of pushing your limits and running the risk of something unpleasant.C.The benefit of exploring new places with unknown companions.D.The importance of being an expert in on field. The Internet has completely changed the workplace over the past three decades. Artificial Intelligence is now all set to do the same, and businesses that don’t take advantage of the technology risk being left behind.Global tech giants like Amazon have been leading the change, and businesses of all sizes are now using the technology for employing and managing their staff.Among them is L’Oreal. With about a million applicants for roughly 15,000 new positions each year, the company is using AI to hire.“We really wanted to save time and focus more on quality, diversity and candidate experience. And AI solutions were the best way to go faster on these challenges,” said Eva Azoulay, global vice-president of L’Oreal’s Human Resources Department. The company uses Mya, a chatbot, to save employers’ time during the first stage of the process. It handles routine questions from candidates, and checks details such as availability and visa requirements. Should candidates make it to the next round, they’ll run into Seedlink, an AI software that scores applicants based on their answers to open-ended interview questions. These scores don’t replace human judgment, said Azoulay, but they do exclude candidates who might not seem like obvious choices.Early results have been promising. For one internship program, where 12,000 people apply for about 80 spots, employers claim they saved 200 hours of time while hiring the most diverse group to date.Other businesses have gone beyond employment and are using AI to help manageemployees. Some UK firms have started using Isaak, a system designed by the London-based company StatusToday, to track how many hours staff spend online and the number of emails they receive. London real estate agent JBrown has been using this system since March. CEO James Brown said it helps the firm understand employees’ habits and prevent them from overworking. “It enables us to solve bottleneck problems and relieve overburdened employees,” he said.Despite these examples of good practice, there is still a long way for AI to reach its full potential, and the technology comes with risks. Another AI danger could be its impact on jobs through automation.McKinsey predicts AI could add $13 trillion to the global economy by 2030, with early adopters doubling their cash flow over that period. But the demand for repetitive (重复的) or digitally-unskilled jobs could drop by around 10%, the consulting firm said in a 2018 report. 46.What can we learn about AI technology from Paragraph 1?A.It causes a great problem in workplace.B.It will become a necessary part of business.C.It requires businesses to invest much money.D.It will replace the Internet in the future.47.L’Oreal uses AI in its hiring process to _____.A.pick out the most suitable candidates directlyB.come up with more questions unlimitedlyC.improve the company’s hiring efficiencyD.save money by replacing human judgment48.What’s the meaning of the underlined word “exclude” in the 5th paragraph?A.Prepare.B.Consider.C.Remove.D.Include. 49.Firms with the system Isaak can _____.A.prevent their employees from surfing the InternetB.force their employees to form good working habitsC.monitor the contents of all their employees’ emailsD.help their employees avoid being overstressed at work50.What is the main idea of the passage?A.What AI will bring to the workplace.B.Why AI could be good for the workplace.C.How businesses can prepare for an AI future.D.How to use AI to improve workplace efficiency.Culture can affect not just language and customs, but also how people experience the world on surprisingly basic levels.Researchers, with the help of brain scans, have uncovered shocking differences in perception (感知) between Westerners and Asians, what they see when they look at a city street, for example, or even how they perceive a simple line in a square, according to findings published in a leading science journal. In western countries, culture makes people think of themselves as highly independent individuals. When looking at scenes, Westerners tend to focus more on central objects than on their surroundings. East Asian cultures, however, emphasize inter-dependence. When Easterners look at a scene, they tend to focus on surroundings as well as the object.Using an experiment involving two tasks, Dr Hedden asked subjects to look at a line simply to estimate its length, a task that is played to American strengths. In another, they estimated the line’s length relative to the size of a square, an easier task for the Asians. The level of brain activity, by tracking blood flow, was then measured by Brain Scanners. The experiment found that although there was no difference in performance, and the tasks were very easy, the levels of activity in the subjects’ brains were different. For the Americans, areas linked to attention lit up more, when they worked on the task they tended to find more difficult — estimating the line’s length relative to the square. For the Asians, the attention areas lit up more during the harder task also — estimating the line’s length without comparing it to the square. The findings are a reflection of more than ten years of previous experimental research into east-west differences. In one study, for instance, researchers offered people a choice among five pens; four red and one green. Easterners were more likely to choose a red pen while Westerners were more likely’ to choose the green one.Culture is not affecting how you see the world, but how you choose to understand and internalize it. But such habits can be changed. Some psychological studies suggest that when an Easterner goes to the West or vice versa, habits of thought and perception also begin to change. Such research gives us clues on how our brain works and is hopeful for us to develop programs to improve our memory, memory techniques and enhance and accelerate ourlearning skills.51.According to the passage, Chinese people are most likely to ___.A.more emphasize independent thinkingB.always focus more on their surroundingsC.think of Westerners as highly independent individualsD.focus more on the context as well as the object52.We know from the passage that people’s brains will be more active when ___.A.the task is much easier B.the blood flow is trackedC.the task is more difficult D.people begin to choose colors 53.What do the findings of the experiment mentioned in the 4th paragraph indicate?A.They indicate that culture has a great impact on the way people talk and behave.B.They show that Easterners and Westerners have great differences in perceiving the world.C.They suggest that people’s habits of thought and-perception can be changed indifferent cultures.D.They make it clear that Easterners and Westerners lay emphasis on different things. 54.It can be inferred from the passage that ____.A.Easterners prefer collectivism to individualismB.East Asian cultures lay more emphasis on independenceC.It took over ten years to find out how to improve our brainpowerD.Americans will change their habits of perception when they’re in Britain 55.Which of the following will be the best title of the passage?A.Chinese culture: why it has an advantage over Western culture?B.Western culture and Chinese culture: which will be more suitable for us?C.Western culture and Chinese culture: why we should learn from both?D.Western culture vs. Chinese culture阅读短文, 按照题目要求用英语回答问题。

Anthony Doerr’s new bestseller, All the Light We Cannot See, holds special appeal for me. That’s how I would describe it. From the poetic language, to the realization of what the tile actually means: that underneath the surface of history, there is light that has not been seen, and stories that have gone untold.I’m going to be honest-love for this book didn’t hit me straight away. In fact, my first attempt to read it last month ended with me putting it aside and going to find something easier, lighter and less descriptive to read. But this book is built on beautiful imagery. Both in the literal sense-the physical world of 1940s Paris and Germany, and the metaphorical (隐喻性的)sense-scientific and philosophical references to light, to seeing and not seeing, and the differences between the two. It’s a beautiful work of genius, but it does get a little complicated at times. However, when we get into the meat of this World War II novel, it’s also an upsetting story of a childhood torn apart by war. It’s about Parisian Marie Laure who has been blind since she was six, and a German orphan called Werner who finds himself at the center of the Hitler Youth. Both of their stories are told with sensitivity and sympathy, each one forced down a path by their personal circumstances and by that destructive monster-war.I think this is the kind of book you will never appreciate if you stop too soon-I learned that lesson. From the first to last page, there is a theme of invisible lines running parallel (平行的)to one another and sometimes, just sometimes, crossing in the strangest way. These two lives we are introduced to seem to be worlds apart, and yet they come together and influence one another. It was this, more than the predictably awful tale of war, that made me feel quite emotional.1. What does the writer think of the book?A.Light and easy to read.B.Rich in philosophical ideas.C.Fascinating but too descriptive.D.Too complicated for its theme.2. What can we learn about Marie Laure and Werner?A.The war leads to their sensitivity.B.They know each other at an early age.C.The Hitler Youth pushes them to grow.D.They both have a miserable childhood.3. What particularly stirred the writer’s emotions?A.The book’s dramatic ending.B.The book’s beautiful imagery.C.The characters’ interconnected destiny.D.The suffering brought by World War II.4. What is the purpose of this text?A.To share the writer’s feelings of a book.B.To recommend a delightful bestseller.C.To tell readers a heartbreaking story.D.To analyze the structure of a book.3. The sperm whale is an astonishing creature. It’s lo nger than a semi-truck, weighs more than 90, 000 pounds and is the largest member of the toothed whale family. It’s known to dive 6, 500 feet in search of food, and to stay down there for longer than an hour at a time.Perhaps most fantastically, the sper m whale’s brain weighs as much as 20 pounds-the biggest of any species on Earth. But when it comes to brains, is size all that matters? There’s a lot we don’t know about the sperm whale’s intelligence because it’s difficult to carry out neurological (神经的) testing on such a huge marine mammal. But some clues point to sperm whales being much smarter than we give them credit for.A 2021 study published in Biology Letters, for example, looked back to 19th-century historical logbooks from whalers. Researchers found that sperm whales were at first easy to catch-but almost immediately, the whales learned how to evade hunters and whaling success dropped by 60 percent. The study suggests that the whales passed information to one another through soundwaves to avoid being caught.Animals that have big brains usually have a few things in common. They usually live long lives; for example, sperm whales can live for 70 years or longer. Additionally, they’re capable of complex behaviors and they tend to be more socia1. Whales may work together to hunt or communicate in a language all their own. What’s more, humans, whales and dolphins all have spindle neurons in their brains. These nerve cells make us capable of deeper thought, such as reasoning skills, memory, communication and adaptive thinking. And like humans, whales have emotional intelligence- meaning they're capable of empathy, grief and sadness. Still, in proportion to (与…成比例)our body size, the human brain is bigger than that of the sperm whale.Yet there’s still so much we don’t know about how smart sperm whales really are. And just like the whalers of a century ago, we have likely been underestimating marine mammals, whether large or small, for as long as we’ve known of their existence.1. Why do people know littl e about the sperm whale’s intelligence?A.Sperm whales’ big size makes research difficult.B.It didn’t attract scientists’ attention until recently.C.Whalers didn’t keep enough records of their hunting.D.Sperm whales usually stay deep down in the ocean.2. What does the underlined word “evade” mean in paragraph 3?A.Track. B.Avoid. C.Locate. D.Trick.3. What conclusion can we draw from paragraph 5?A.The nerve cells distinguish humans from animals.B.Sperm whales have smaller brains than humans.C.Spindle neurons make higher intelligence possible.D.Emotional intelligence is unique to whales and humans.4. Which is the most suitable title for the text?A.Sperm Whales Are Astonishingly SmartB.Sperm Whales Have the Biggest BrainC.Break the Code of Whale LanguageD.Unlock the Mystery of Sea Mammals4. As the concept of emotional intelligence (EI) has gone global, we’ve watched professionals fail as they try to improve their emotional intelligence because they either don’t know where to foc us their efforts or they haven’t understood how to improve these skills on a practical level. In our work consulting with companies and coaching leaders, we have found that if you’re looking to develop particular EI strengths, it helps to consider areas for improvement others have identified along with the goals you want to achieve-and then to actively build habits in those areas rather than simply relying on understanding them conceptually. The first step is to get a sense of how your self-perception (how you see yourself) differs from your reputation (how others see you). This is especially true for the development of EI because we can be blind to how we express and read the emotional components of our interactions. For example, most of us think that we’re good listeners, but very often that’s really not the case. Without this external reality check, it will be difficult for you to identify the ways that your actions affect your performance. Getting feedback from others can also provide proof of the necessity of shifting our behavior and motivation to do so.To give you the best sense of where the differences lie between your self-perception and reputation, you should use a 360-degree feedback assessment that takes into account the multiple aspects of EI. The key is to find one to give you feedback, which is focused on development and not on performance assessment. And that can give you a detailed understanding of how other people’s assessments of you differ from your own assessments.Secondly, when you get your feedback from an assessment, let that inform what you want to improve. But also consider what your goals are. When it comes to cultivating strengths in emotional intelligence, you’re at a huge disadvantage if you’re only interested because others sa y you should be. Your emotional intelligence is so tied up in your sense of self that being intrinsically (内在的) motivated to make the effort matters more when changing longstanding habits than it does when simply learning a skill. That means the areas that you choose to actively work on should lie at the intersection of the feedback you’ve gotten and the areas that are most important to your own aspirations. Understanding the influences of your current EI habits relative to your goals will keep you going over a long period of time as you do the work of strengthening your emotional intelligence.1. What do we know from the first paragraph?A.Professionals fail to understand the concepts of EI.B.EI plays a key role in professional development.C.Leaders are badly in need of improving their EI.D.You know how to improve EI better with others’ help.2. According to the passage, which of the following is an “external reality check”?A.You got help from your parents when making a key decision.B.Your teacher directed you towards a better attitude in study.C.You reflected yourself and made a New Year Resolution.D.Your career development speeds up with the guidance of others.3. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 4?A.It’s most reliable to follow your inner call when you want to improve your EI.B.It’s hard for others to know your EI because it hides deeply behind your inner sense.C.When you want to improve EI, you should take your goals into consideration.D.Acquiring a new skill is more significant than your attempt to improve your EI.4. Which of the following might the author agree with?A.Effective EI development is determined by different factors.B.EI development is unlikely to happen unless you know what EI really is.C.The importance of performance assessment is underestimated.D.Your inner self discourages you from improving your EI.5. With gas prices rising and airport security lines snaking longer than ever, why not book your next domestic vacation on a train? Compared to other alternatives, it’s comfortable and relaxing. Here is some advice on how to make a trip by rail as pleasant as possible.Plan ahead. Most long-distance trains, especially the sleeping car accommodations, sell out very quickly. 1 But no matter when you travel, it’s a good idea to make your reservations at least 90 days in advance.Use a travel agent. Consider turning your travel plan over to a travel agent and letting him double-check all the details, make suggestions, and then handle the actual reservations. A good one can sometimes find you discounted tickets. 2 Then you won’t have to walk through several cars on a moving train three times a day for your meals.Bring a blanket. When you’re riding on trains, you won’t be provided with a blanket for free, even if your trip is an overnight one. 3 In the summer in particular, the air conditioning can make them quite cold.Arrive early. Most trains operate just once a day and some run only three times a week, so missing yours can be a disaster. 4 Note: The times listed on the schedules are departure times, not arrival times.Have fun. 5 Read a book, knit, do a crossword puzzle, or simply watch the world unfold outside the window.
