我在这篇文章里所说的英语“难”句子,指的是那些文学性较强的英语句子,什么是“文学性”呢?用老百姓通俗的话讲吧,就是那些玩文字游戏的句子,比如说“吃饱了不饿”不说成“吃饱了不饿”,偏说成“摄取了充足的食物后会使人产生饱腹感”。

对于讲一般事情的简单的语言句子,相互翻译时比较简单,基本上一字对一字地翻译就行了,你说“水”,他说“water”,你说“喝”,他说“drink”,你说“人”,他说“people”,你说“山”,他说“mountain”,你说“海”,他说“see”,你说“喝水”,他说“drink water”……
大致如此,翻译起来比较简单。

但对于文学性较强的句子,翻译起来就不那么简单了,因为不同的语言里,文字游戏的玩法不同,所玩出的效果也不同。

比如汉语里说“人山人海”,英语里偏偏不说“people mountain people sea”,而说成very crowded或huge crowd of people,汉语里说“事实胜于雄辩”,英语里非说“action speaks louder than word”,汉语里说“有志者事竟成”,英语里非说成“Where there is a will there is a way”。

英语和汉语的文字游戏的差别主要是因为有两个人当初没商量好造成的,一个是发明汉语的那个人,一个是发明英语的那家伙,这两个人当初不认识,也不属于同一个时代,一个在亚洲,一个在欧洲,中间隔着几万里,上下差着几千岁,互不往来,因此各自闭门造车地发明了英语和汉语,因此就造成了文字游戏上的相互差别。

那么怎样翻译带有文字游戏特征的“难”句子呢?总的来说是一个办法,就是“重说”,即把英语原话看懂了,然后改换成完全不同的更地道的汉语句子,把这句话重说。

这个道理有些人或许能觉悟出来,但操作起来所能达到的完美程度却因人而异,不同的人知识修养不同,思想境界不同,对两种语言的熟悉程度不同,所翻译出来的句子所得的“分数”就不同,有人得满分,有人就勉强及格。

过去一百多年来,人们都以一个标准来该翻译打分,就是三个字:信、达、雅。

可是近些年来人们发现这三个字其实只是完美无缺的理想标准,是难以达到的最高境
界。

再说这个“雅”字也不合适,把优美的唐诗宋词翻译成汉语或把莎士比亚的十四行诗翻译成汉语倒是可以有“雅”可谈,而要是翻译电影里老百姓的生活琐事,甚至翻译脏话粗话,这个三个字就得改成“信、达、俗”了。

于是近些年来,进步了的人们就放弃了原来少数文人所提出的理想主义的评分标准,而纷纷提出更大众化的评分标准。

我在博采众家之长后将我个人比较推崇的一些观点归结为“两个原则”,在此向大家推荐,这两个原则就是“信息对等原则”和“等效原则”。

这两个原则是什么意思呢?简单地说,前一个原则就是“实话实说”,原话里有什么,你翻译过来的话里就得有什么,即保证“信息量”不丢失。

这个原则是在“信息”这两个字问世了之后才产生的,透露着实用的可操作性和现代人务实的翻译态度,语言嘛,本来就是用来“办事”的,把事办成了最重要,别丢了拉了什么,误了事。

但对于文学性较强的句子,翻译的时候光“实话实说”一个原则就不行了,还要提高一个原则,那就是“等效原则”。

因为两种语言文字游戏的玩法不同,汉语里的一种说法,到了英语里可能完全不那么说,甚至没有对应的说法,要是一律实话实说地翻译过去,对方有可能完全没反应,甚至完全听不懂,还有可能把你误会了。

比如你要把“我三顾茅庐才见到了他”翻译成“我三次到了茅草屋才见到了他”,人家没准会误认为你生活在原始社会,还整天在草屋里转悠着呢。

因此对于文学性较强的带有文字游戏特征的“难”句子,翻译的时候就得按照“等效原则”进行改写或重说,改换成让对方人类听懂并产生同样效果的句子。

所谓“等效”,就是让对方人类看完了你翻译的句子后,产生同样程度的反应结果,达到同样程度的感召效果。

人家英语里的原话让英国人看完后流几滴眼泪、笑几声,你翻译过来的汉语句子也得让咱中国人流几滴眼泪、笑几声。

天啊,又要实话实说,又要改写,这不是矛盾的吗?是的,是矛盾的,但好玩的刺激性也就在这里,这就好像走钢丝一样,又要掉下来又不能掉下来,玩的才叫“技术”,
这种技术玩好了,可以当饭碗,当职业,当翻译,当文化大使,把源源不断的跨语言文章、文化、思想、精神相互交流、促进人类的和平进步,高雅吧!
