曼昆宏观经济学最新英文版参考答案第25章
Chapter 25Problems and Applications1. The facts that countries import many goods and services yet must produce a large quantity ofgoods and services themselves to enjoy a high standard of living are reconciled by noting that there are substantial gains from trade. In order to be able to afford to purchase goods from othercountries, an economy must generate income. By producing many goods and services, then trading them for goods and services produced in other countries, a nation maximizes its standard of living.2. a. More investment would lead to faster economic growth in the short run.b. The change would benefit many people in society who would have higher incomes as theresult of faster economic growth. However, there might be a transition period in whichworkers and owners in consumption-good industries would get lower incomes, andworkers and owners in investment-good industries would get higher incomes. In addition, some group would have to reduce their spending for some time so that investment couldrise.3. a. Private consumption spending includes buying food and buying clothes; private investmentspending includes people buying houses and firms buying computers. Many otherexamples are possible. Education can be considered as both consumption and investment.b. Government consumption spending includes paying workers to administer governmentprograms; government investment spending includes buying military equipment andbuilding roads. Many other examples are possible. Government spending on healthprograms is an investment in human capital. This is truer for spending on health programsfor the young rather than those for the elderly.4. The opportunity cost of investing in capital is the loss of consumption that results from redirectingresources toward investment. Over-investment in capital is possible because of diminishingmarginal returns. A country can "over-invest" in capital if people would prefer to have higherconsumption spending and less future growth. The opportunity cost of investing in human capital is also the loss of consumption that is needed to provide the resources for investment. A countrycould "over-invest" in human capital if people were too highly educated for the jobs they couldget for example, if the best job a Ph.D. in philosophy could find is managing a restaurant.5. a. When a German firm opens a factory in South Carolina, it represents foreign directinvestment.b. The investment increases U.S. GDP because it increases production in the United States. The effect on U.S. GNP would be smaller because the owners would get paid a return ontheir investment that would be part of German GNP rather than U.S. GNP.6. a. The United States benefited from the Japanese investment because it made our capitalstock larger, increasing our economic growth.b. It would have been better for the United States to make the investments itself becausethen it would have received the returns on the investment itself, instead of the returnsgoing to Japan.7. Greater educational opportunities for women could lead to faster economic growth in the countriesof South Asia because increased human capital would increase productivity and there would beexternal effects from greater knowledge in the country. Second, increased educational1Chapter 25/Production and Growth 2opportunities for young women may lower the population growth rate because such opportunities raise the opportunity cost of having a child.8. a. Individuals with higher incomes have better access to clean water, medical care, and goodnutrition.b. Healthier individuals are likely to be more productive.c. Understanding the direction of causation will help policymakers place proper emphasis onthe programs that will achieve both greater health and higher incomes.9. a. Political stability could lead to strong economic growth by making the country attractive toinvestors. The increased investment would raise economic growth.b. Strong economic growth could lead to political stability because when people have highincomes they tend to be satisfied with the political system and are less likely to overthrowor change the government.10. a. If output is rising and the number of workers is declining, then output per worker must berising.b. Policymakers should not be concerned as long as output in the manufacturing sector is notdeclining. The reduction in manufacturing jobs will allow labor resources to move to otherindustries, increasing total output in the economy. An increase in productivity of workers(as measured by output per worker) is beneficial to the economy.。

英文原文阅读Mistakes Improve Children's LearningEveryone makes mistakes and children are no exception. What's important is how we learn from them. Yet, children grow up in a society that pressures them to be perfect and intelligent - to achieve the highest SAT scores, land prized scholarships, and get into the best universities. Parents reinforce this pressure at home when they cover up children's mistakes, correct homework to improve grades, or drill knowledge into kids until they get it right. Stress is increased when children are constantly praised for their intelligence. How does this focus on perfection and IQ affect learning? And how can we help children and teens believe in themselves by accepting their mistakes and learning from them?A recent Scientific American article, Getting it Wrong: Surprising Tips on How to Learn, supports a number of learning and developmental theories. Historically, many educators have created conditions for learning that do not encourage errors. And parents have followed suit. For example, if we drill children over and over again with the same math problem, they will eventually remember the answer. And if they are lucky, they will remember the answer on a standardized test. This approach to learning assumes that if students are allowed to make mistakes, they will not learn the correct information. However, recent research shows this to be an incorrect assumption. In fact, studies have found that learning is enhanced when children make mistakes!Whether it involves homework, developing friendships, or playing soccer, learning is enriched through error. Making mistakes is part of how kids are challenged to learn to do things differently. It motivates them to try new approaches.Carol Dweck, a professor at Stanford University, studies the importance of challenging children, even if they get things wrong. Her research shows that praising children for their intelligence can actually make them less likely to persist in the face of challenge. She and her colleagues followed hundreds of 5th grade children in New York City schools. One group was praised for their intelligence while the other group was praised for their effort. When the 5th graders were challenged with an extremely difficult test designed for 8th graders, a surprising result occurred. The students who had been praised for their effort worked very hard, even though they made a lot of mistakes. The kids praised for being smart became discouraged and saw their mistakes as a sign of failure. Intelligence testing for the kids praised for their effort increased by 30% while the kids praised for their intelligence dropped by 20%.。

Yet because most of usare so busy juggling work and family commitments, we tend to neglect the things that don'trequire immediate attention. Some day, we think, we'll take care of the three essentials --retirement savings, insurance coverage and estate planning. Unfortunately, emergencies canstrike and then it's too late. "Failure to plan is a huge mistake," Barbara Raasch, managingdirector at Wealth and Tax Advisory Services, Inc., told us.[B]How can you avoid the "should have, could have, would have" scenario? By puttingthese three items at the top of your "to do" list -- protect your future, protect your family andprotect your legacy(遗产).Protect Your Future[C] The national savings rate averaged around 0.4% for the first half of this year, according to the U.S.Department of Commerce, meaning Americans spent a whopping 99.6% of their after-tax earnings. Evenmore frightening, in July the savings rate dropped below zero. We all know we should save more. But with somany goals to save for -- a house, the kids' college tuition, your retirement, occasional vacations and a smallemergency fund -- it's easy to feel there's just not enough money to do it all.[D] Budget. The first step is to create a budget. Once you know what you're spending your money on, youcan figure out what you don't need to spend it on -- and sock those savings away. "Every month you have topay yourself first," says Joe Moglia, CEO of Ameritrade. "Take a little out of your paycheck." It doesn't haveto be much -- it could be foregoing(放弃) that extra latte or getting the DVD free at the library.[E] Retirement. Just about every survey of American investors these days shows that retirement is a mainreason for saving. Yet an astounding number of people ignore the opportunities offered by employment-basedretirement plans. According to a recent survey by Aon Consulting, more than 20% of those eligible for a 401kplan do not participate at all, while another 53% do not save at a rate high enough to take full advantage oftheir employers' matching contribution -- the closest thing to free money in the retirement savings universe.Consider it money that grows without being taxed.[F] Emergency reserves. Many financial planners recommend that you have enough money in a savings ormoney-market account for at least six to nine months of essential expenses, including your mortgage or rent, insurance premiums, credit card payments, utility and grocery bills and other fixed expenses, such as carpayments or student loans. And it's always a good idea to have cash on hand once you are confronted withemergency situations. For example, if the ATMs in your neighborhood were out, you can have enough tocover your immediate needs for a week or so.Protect Y our Family[G] A major illness, an extended disability or the loss of a job could wipe out your financial reserves and anyprospect of being able to save enough to achieve your other life goals. Here's what you need to protect yoursavings:[H] Health insurance. A recent study of court records and direct interviews indicated that about half ofpersonal bankruptcies in the U.S. are caused in part by medical debts. A relative of mine is about to have her∶∶∶∶∶∶∶∶∶∶ 装∶∶∶∶∶∶∶∶∶∶∶ 订 ∶∶∶∶∶∶∶∶∶∶∶∶∶ 线∶∶∶∶∶∶∶∶∶∶∶∶∶∶∶∶hip replaced and because she's over 65, Medicare is paying for it. But people under that age face enormous bills -- when a child needs an appendectomy, for instance -- and many of them lack insurance. [I] If your company provides medical benefits, you have the most cost-efficient coverage available. Sign up. If you're responsible for your own medical insurance, you may want to look into health savings accounts (HSAs), a combination of a high deductible health plan and a tax-deductible savings account allocated to health care expenses. The funds in the account grow tax-free and can be withdrawn tax-free to pay for any qualified medical expenses, including over-the-counter medications, dental care, eyeglasses and other costs not usually covered by conventional health insurance plans.[J] Disability insurance. Over 80% of Americans don't have adequate disability coverage, according to a survey by the Consumer Federation of America and the American Council of Life Insurers. You may already have disability insurance through your employee benefits plan, either as paid sick leave or actual disability payments if you're unable to work for an extended period of time. But these programs tend to pay far less than your weekly salary. For the self-employed, having a financial safety net is even more crucial.[K] Life insurance. If you die prematurely, a life-insurance policy will provide immediate funds for funeral expenses, and may help replace your lost income. "Life insurance isn't a priority if you are single, but if you have a spouse or dependents, you want to make sure they're taken care of," says Barbara Raasch. Employers frequently offer coverage as part of their benefits package. Protect Y our Legacy[L] One of the most thoughtful legacies that anyone can leave is peace of mind. No one wants to mar the memory of a loved one with "I think this is what Mom wanted but she never said" doubts. You can prevent that with the right advance directives and documents: [M] A will. Over half of the adult population in this country dies without a will. This is not just senseless; it’s downright irresponsible. “ If you die without a will,” says Karin Barkhorn, an estate planning attorney at Brayan Cave LLP,” the state determines how your assets aredispersed. “ What ’s more, the government could end up collecting a lot more tax than necessary.[N] A living will. Also known as a health care directive, a living will specifies what medical measures should be used to keep you alive if you are incapacitated. The agonizing Terri Schiavo case earlier this year showed how the absence of a living will can rip a family apart. Health care providers are generally required to comply with the wishes you describe in your living will.[O]. Durable power of attorney. This document authorizes a loved one to make financial decisions on your behalf should you become unable. It allows someone to renew your CD at the bank, pay bills, sell stock or even sell your home or business, based on the agent's determination of what is best for you. "If you are in the hospital and cannot pay your bills or sign a check, someone will have to do it," says Raasch. "If any of your assets are held in yourname only, your spouse can't touch that money unless the court appoints him guardian. The emotional turmoil of your loved ones having to go to court will only add to your misery." Although it's best to have these documents prepared by a family-law attorney, you can cover the basics on your own with software such as Quicken's WillMaker Plus or Kiplinger's WillPower.[P] Retirement savings. Insurance coverage. Estate planning. These are the foundations of a financial well-being plan. Take care of your family and yourself today.1. We are advised to leave some cash at home in order to cope with sudden and serious situations.2.The disability insurance obtained by the employee benefits plan is not enough for a decent living.3. My first thought when I opened the tissue paper and saw the blouse was that it was another candidate to hang in the back of my closet. I felt like the most important person didn’t care enough about me to think about my likes and dislikes.“What do you think, Mom?” Jason asked, hardly waiting for me to pull the blouse out of the box. “I thought it would look so nice on you.” He smiled at me with anticipation. At that moment, I realized Jason saw me as someone who would be open to receiving and wearing something more elegant than my usual clothes. He wanted to give me something special. It was a flash of sudden recognition. Then everything changed.“It’s beautiful,” I was able to say genuinely as I hugged him.“Try it on. I want to see how it looks,” Jason added.“I know just the skirt to try it with,” I said as I headed towards my closet. When I returned with the outfit on, Jason was waiting. “It looks just like I thought it would. It’s pretty on you, Mom,” Jason said.I tried to stop the tears that were welling in the corner of my eyes. “Thank you, honey. It isa beautiful blouse. I can tell you put a lot of thought into picking it out.”Jason probably wondered why I was so emotional over the gift. It made me think back on the gifts I’d ignored. Maybe the people who gave me the gifts saw something in me that I didn’t see in myself. That opened me up to change and growth. In the years since, I received my son’s present. I have rarely felt disappointed when a gift doesn’t match my interests or desires. I’ve started appreciating the thoughts and efforts behind every gift and accepted it with gratitude. This change has made holidays more joyful anddeepened my appreciation for family and friends. There is surely something special about receiving a gift that is perfectly suited for you. But I have found that it is just as special to receive all gifts with an open mind and a grateful heart. 4.How did the author feel in the beginning when receiving the present from her son?A.Curious.B.Relieved.C.Guilty.D.Dissatisfied. 5.What mainly changed the author’s attitude toward Jason’s gift?A.The understanding of Jason’s thoughts.B.The recognition of her own potential.C.The skirt that matches the blouse.D.The praise from Jason.6.After reflecting on past gifts, the author became _________.A.careful about choosing giftsB.indifferent to receiving giftsC.joyful about choosing giftsD.grateful for receiving gifts7.What can we learn from this passage?A.What suits you is best for you.B.Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.C.An open mind is the source of progress.D.Unspoken gratitude is often the most heartfelt.Eating a plant- based diet has been shown to be very good for your heart and your overall health. In fact, a recent study found a young person could live an additional 13 years by eating more vegetables and legumes (豆类), as well as whole grains, fruit and nuts.Which makes the findings of a new analysis of the diets of nearly 400,000 UK adults published Monday in the journal Frontiers in Nutrition rather shocking: Eating veggies, especially cooked ones, doesn’t reduce your risk of heart disease over time.“Our large study did not find evidence for a protective effect of vegetable intake on the occurrence of CVD (cardiovascular disease),” said Qi Feng, an epidemiologist at the University of Oxford, in a statement. While the study found eating raw veggies could protect against heart disease, cooked vegetables did not. Any benefit went away when researchers factored in lifestyle factors such as physical activity, educational level, smoking, drinking, fruit intake, red and processed meat consumption, and use of mineral and vitamin supplements.“Instead, our analyses show that the seemingly protective effect of vegetable intake against CVD risk is very likely to be accounted for by bias (偏差)… related to differences in socioeconomic situation and lifestyle,” Feng said.Don’t start celebrating yet, veggie haters. Experts in the UK and United States quickly took exception to the study’s conclusion“Although this study found that eating more vegetables wasn’t associated with a lower risk of heart and circulatory diseases once other lifestyle and other factors were taken into account, that doesn’t mean we should stop eating vegetables,” said Victoria Taylor, a senior dietitian at the British Heart Foundation, in a statement.“The results are not surprising. Picking out one single component and assuming just adding it to the diet, e. g., vegetables, is not likely to result in the desired effect,” Alice Lichtenstein, director and senior scientist at Tufts University’s Cardiovascular Nutrition Laboratory, told CNN in an email.“One thing that has become clear over the past decade is we should not be looking at single food s or nutrients, rather the whole dietary pattern,” said Lichtenstein.8.What can we learn from the new study led by Feng?A.It followed a young UK person for 13 years.B.Its findings came as no surprise to other people.C.It overturned the conclusion of previous studies.D.Its purpose was to find the right vegetables for people.9.What did Feng imply about vegetables’ protective effect?A.It was totally made up by some researchers.B.It still held true despite some different findings.C.It could only be achieved by living a healthy lifestyle.D.It was a misconception caused by differences in people.10.Which of following is closest in meaning to underlined phrase“ take exception to”?A.V oice objections to.B.Add details to.C.Display ignorance of.D.Take notice of.11.What did Lichtenstein think of the study?A.It was groundbreaking.B.It was one- sided.C.It would cause confusion.D.It needed more evidence.I have taught medical students for 40 years in many contexts — on hospital rounds, during patient appointments, running small group discussions, and teaching large classes. I have lectured on topics that range from biochemical pathways to lifestyle diseases to nutrition science and the biology of aging. The most pleasing part of teaching is passing along the less visible aspects of being a physician — how to show respect for patients and be a true caregiver. I do this by telling stories about my clinical experience during lectures and the pay-off for me is engagement with students. The pandemic and its consequent shift in how students learn has changed all of that.In my 40 years of teaching, I’ve never seen such a dramatic change. The pandemic forced first- and second-year medical students into virtual classes, causing in-person attendance to dive. As I watched this shift to remote learning, I worried about its impact on future doctors. The engagement I once saw in the classroom is now hidden behind screens, and I find myself wondering if my stories and lessons are having the same impact. The shift to virtual learning also worries me about the future of medical education. The personal nature of medicine, often seen in clinical skills training and up-close body studies, is hard to obtain virtually. I’m also concerned about other crucial aspects of early medical school education that I’ve seen benefit students over the years — things like research opportunities, specialty exploration and volunteer work. These activities are much harder to do remotely. These experiences are vital for developing well-rounded, skilled doctors who can provide thorough treatment. Finally, there is a very real threat to medical education in changing the role of the physician professors. Doctors are unusual among professions in the expectation that they will teach medical students regardless of where and what specific field of medicine they practice. Remove professors’ satisfaction that comes with face-to-face teaching and we risk losing their commitment, much ofwhich is often done on an entirely voluntary basis.12.What did the author enjoy most in the past 40 years?A.Telling attractive stories.B.Lecturing on many topics.C.Sharing his values and attitude.D.Being experienced and respected. 13.What is important for the future of medical education?A.Appealing nature of medicine.B.Well-rounded clinical trainings.C.Hands-on non-virtual experiences.D.Students’ special personal talents. 14.According to paragraph 5, what worries the author?A.Medical professors might be expected to teach wherever they are.B.Medical professors might not fully devote themselves to teaching.C.Medical professors might lose most of the students’ satisfaction.D.Medical professors might change their role to be student-centered.15.What is the main idea of this passage?A.The issues with reduced face-to-face lecture attendance.B.The debates over necessity of virtual medical education.C.The problems of medical students, low employment rate.D.The concerns about the shift to virtual medical education. In the modem world, we are encouraged to be busy and as productive as possible. Most of us probably feel the pressure to perform efficiently. 16 Faster doesn’t equal better. And being busier does not mean we are more productive. We might also struggle to slow down. So how do we slow down? Here are some science-based strategies to try.Take intentional pauses. Taking intentional pauses can lead to better outcomes. It turns out that when teachers pause after asking a question and after receiving a response, it improves students’ use of language and logic. This suggests that we should give ourselves a bit more time to think through the questions we encounter in life. 17Spend less time on your phone. We often feel tired and need a break from our busy day, so we pick up our phones. We surf through social media, the news, or shopping websites. 18 That’s the opposite of slowing down. To start, it would do us some good to spend less time on our phones. Then, it also matters a lot how we spend time on our phones. Are we stimulating our brainwith information or anger? Or are we using our phones to relax and recover?19 Sometimes when we feel overwhelmed by life, s fast pace, the true source of that chaos often lies within our own minds. Maybe we’re running over what we’ll say to our coworker tomorrow. 20 One effective strategy to aid this process can be daily journaling — we get those thoughts out of our heads and onto paper. We might also go for a run or take a cold shower — two techniques that can help our brains change direction and start thinking differently.A.Slow down your mind.B.Write down your thoughts.C.And being busier means that we are more productive.D.Thus, we are more likely to come up with better answers.E.But all that these activities do is make our heads even fuller.F.Sometimes we just need to stop briefly and reset our thought.G.But this feeling of “time urgency” actually leads us to perform worse.二、完形填空Rob made ends meet for his family as a handyman, doing odd jobs around the area. From /voanews/english/ Major rifts within the opposition have been cited as the biggest factor likely to thwart efforts by their leader Anwar Ibrahim to win control of government at the next election, due by 2013, although some analysts say a poll could be held as early as next year. More than 1,500 opposition officials endorsed a document that spelled out their common goals after a daylong convention aimed at patching-up their differences. The three-party alliance made unprecedented inroads in the 2008 general elections but those gains were also attributed to widespread anger over the government's handling of problems such as graft and racial inequality. Speaking to the party faithful in the eastern state of Sabah on Sunday, Anwar says Malaysia is witnessing a battle between the common interests of the people against the ruling elites. "At times the contentious battle is between the interests of the masses, the public, of the nation, of the people, and the interests of a special elite group, either family, cronies or political elements. And in this battle – [a] contentious battle -- invariably the public will lose," he said. Spats within the opposition stem largely from ideological differences among the three opposition parties which consist of a conservative Islamic group that caters to the Malay Muslim majority; a secular, left-leaning party whose members are mostly from the ethnic Chinese and Indian minorities; and Anwar's multiracial party, considered the bridge between the other two partners. However, these parties will still require a substantial swing if they are to win power at the next election. The National Front, spearheaded by the all powerful United Malays National Organization (UMNO) has dominated Malaysia politics since independence in 1957.
