经典阅读ⅡThree MusketeersBy Flora in 2012 Alexandre Dumas (1802-1870), the author of Three Musketeers, was a famous French writer, best known for his historical novels of high adventure. Many of his novels are originally serialized, such as The Count of Monte Cristo, The Three Musketeers, Twenty Years After, The Vicomte de Bragelonne. His son, Al exandre Dumassfils, the writer of The Lady of the Camellias, was a famous writer, too.Three Musketeers recounts the adventures of a young man named D'Artagnan after he l eaves home to Paris, to join the Musketeers of the Guard, a group of swashbuckling adventurers who serve King Louis XIII. However, D'A rtagnan is not one of the musketeers of the title. Those are his friends Athos, Porthos, and Aramis, and the four are inseparable friends who live by the motto "all for one, one for all”.On the way to Paris the poor D'Artagnan suffers misadventure and is challenged to a duel by each of three musketeers (Athos, Aramis and Porthos), but he achieves a lot in the group of musketeers. One day, D’A rtagnan and his new love interest, Constance, help the French queen give a particular piece of jewelry to her paramour, the Duke of Buckingham. The Cardinal learns of this and coaxes the French king to hold a ball in which the queen must wear the jewelry and its absence will reveal her infidelity. The four young men work together to foil theKing's evil rival, Cardinal Richelieu, so they try to get the jewelry back from England. The Cardinal kidnaps Constance who is later rescued by the queen, while D’A rtagnan meets Milady de Winter and discovers she is a felon, the ex-wife of Athos and the widow of Count de Winter. The Cardinal recruits Milady to kill Buckingham, also granting her a hand-written pardon fo r future killing of D’Artagnan. Athos learns of this, takes the pardon but is unable to warn Buckingham. He sends word to Lord de Winter that Milady is arriving so that Lord de Winter can arrest her. However, with the help of her guard, Milady escapes to the monastery in France where the queen secreted Constance. Sorrowfully, Milady kills Constance. The four companions arrive and Athos identifies Milady as a multiple murderess. She is tried and beheaded. On the road, D'Artagnan is arrested. Taken before the Cardinal, D'Artagnan relates recent events and reveals the Cardinal's pardon. Impressed, the Cardinal offers him a blank musketeer officer's commission. D'A rtagnan's friends refuse the commission, retiring to a new life, and telling him to take it himself. He takes it and finally becomes a well known lieutenant.I read this book because I watched the movie Slumdog Millionaire, a good Indian movie. In this movie, there were a girl and two boys, and they named themselves the three musketeers. Firstly, I didn’t know what was the three mus keteers’ mean. And then I was so shocked bythe pl ot of the movie that the poor boy’s last qu estion to be the millionaire was what the three musketeer’s names are. On watching this, I thought there must be more stories about the three musketeers. Gradually, I found it a masterpiece written by Alexandre Dumas, so I had the desire to read it. In my mind, D’A rtagnan is a brave man, riding a horse to Paris by himself. He is also courageous to fight with others who he doesn’t agree with, so he has a series of adventures .Besides, he cares a lot about the friendship, though he had fights with the other three musketeers. What’s more, he has the sense of responsibility and justice, for his hope to save the queen and help her to get the jewelry. There is a penetrating sentence “all for one, one for all”, which has left a big impression on me. I think this sentence must have far-reaching impact on the read ers just as on me. When people in difficulties, they fight together just as the three musketeers do, realizing “all for one, one for all”. It is the friendship among people that can change the difficult situation to be a better one. And we should have the courage to pursue the beauty of life and hold the notion that we can change something in the span of our life.。

the Three Feathers三片羽毛Jacob and Wilhelm GrimmOnce upon a time there was a king who had three sons, two of whom were clever and intelligent, but the third one did not talk very much, was simple minded, and the only name they gave him was the Simpleton. When the king became old and weak, and thought that he was nearing his end, he did not know which of his sons should inherit the kingdom after him, so he said to them, "Go forth, and the one of you who brings me the finest carpet, he shall be king after my death."So there would be no dispute among them, he led them to the front of his castle, blew three feathers into the air, and said, "As they fly, so shall you go."the one feather flew to the east, the other to the west, and the third feather flew straight ahead, falling quickly to the ground after going only a short distance. The one brother went to the right, the other to the left, and they laughed at the Simpleton who had to stand there where the third feather had fallen.the Simpleton sat down and was sad. Then he suddenly noticed that there was a trapdoor next to his feather. He lifted it up, found a stairway, and climbed down inside. He came to another door and knocked on it, upon which he heard someone calling out from within:Maiden GREen and small, Hopping toad, Hopping toad's puppy, Hop to and fro, Quickly see who is outside.the door opened, and he saw a big, fat toad sitting there, surrounded by a large number of little toads. The fat toad asked what he wanted.the Simpleton answered, "I would like the most beautiful and finest carpet."then the fat toad called to a young toad, saying:Maiden GREen and small, Hopping toad, Hopping toad's puppy, Hop to and fro, Bring me the large box.the young toad brought the box, and the fat toad opened it, then gave the Simpleton a carpet from it. It was so beautiful and so fine, the like of which could never have been woven in the world above. He thanked the toad and climbed back out.Now the other two thought that their brother was so stupid that he would not find anything to bring home."Why should we spend a lot of effort looking for a carpet?" they said, so they took some pieces of course cloth from the first shepherd's wife they came to, and took these back home to the king.At the same time they returned home, the Simpleton arrived, bringing his beautiful carpet. When the king saw it, he was astounded, and said, "It is only right that the kingdom should go to my youngest son."However, the two other sons gave their father no peace, saying that it would be impossible for the Simpleton to become king, because he lacked understanding in all things. They asked him to declare another contest.then the father said, "He who brings me the most beautiful ring shall inheritthe kingdom." Leading the three brothers outside, he blew the three feathers into the air that they were to follow.the two oldest brothers again went to the east and to the west, and the Simpleton's feather again flew straight ahead, falling down next to the door in the ground. Once again he climbed down to the fat toad and told it that he needed the most beautiful ring. The toad had the box brought out again and gave him from it a ring that glistened with precious stones and was so beautiful that no goldsmith on earth could have made it.the two oldest brothers laughed at the Simpleton, who was going to look for a golden ring, and they took no effort at all. Instead, they drove the nails out of an old wagon ring and brought it to the king. However, when the Simpleton presented his ring, the king said once again, "The kingdom belongs to him."the two oldest sons tormented the king endlessly, until finally he declared a third contest, saying that he who would bring home the most beautiful woman should have the kingdom.Once again he blew the three feathers into the air and they flew in the same directions as before.Without hesitating, the Simpleton went back to the fat toad and said, "I am supposed to take home the most beautiful woman.""Oh!" answered the toad. "The most beautiful woman! She is not here at the moment, but you shall have her nonetheless."the fat toad gave him a hollowed out yellow turnip, to which were harnessed six little mice.the Simpleton said sadly, "What am I to do with this?"the toad answered, "Just put one of my little toads inside it."the he grabbed one of them from the group and set it inside the yellow coach. The little toad was scarcely inside when it turned into a beautiful young lady, the turnip into a coach, and the six mice into horses. He kissed her, raced away with the horses, and brought her to the king. His brothers came along afterward. They had given no effort to find a beautiful woman, but simply brought along the first peasant women they had come upon. After looking at them, the king said, "After my death the kingdom belongs to my youngest son."However, the two oldest sons again deafened the king's ears with the cry, "We cannot allow the Simpleton to become king," and they demanded that the preference should go to the brother whose woman could jump through a hoop that was hanging in the middle of the hall.they thought, "The peasant women will be able to do that very well. They are very strong, but the dainty lady will jump herself to death."the old king gave in to this as well. The two peasant women did indeed jump through the hoop, but they were so plump that each one fell, breaking her thick arms and legs. Then the beautiful lady, that the Simpleton had brought home, jumped, and she jumped through the hoop as lightly as a deer. After this all the protests had to stop. Thus the Simpleton received the crown, and he ruled wisely for a long time.。

the three musketeers三个火枪手summary
When the cardinal, through his extended and vast network of spies (one of whom is among the queen's ladies-in-waiting) discovers that the queen has given Buckingham the diamond tags, he asks the king to give a fabulous ball and demand that the queen wear the king's gift to her: the twelve diamond tags.
While Treville, is writing a new letter of introduction, d'Artagnan glances out the window and, by accident, sees the person who robbed him. He runs after him, and while pursuing him, he offends three musketeers: first, he collides with Athos, reinjuring Athos's wounded shoulder; then he jostles Porthos and reveals a partly counterfeit golden shoulder belt that he is wearing; and finally, he offends Aramis by ungallantly and unintentionally bringing attention to a lady's handkerchief. He is challenged to a duel by each of the musketeers. After he meets the musketeers and begins dueling with Athos, they are all threatened with arrest by the dreaded cardinal's guards because of a law against dueling. D'Artagnan joins forces with the musketeers and helps drive the cardinal's men away. Thus, almost immediately after his arrival in Paris, D'Artagnan becomes an intimate friend of the three musketeers.

She replied, "there is not enough for me myself. How can I give some of it to others?"When she was finished eating they said, "Here is a broom for you. Sweep in front of the back door.""Sweep for yourselves," she answered. "I am not your maid."Seeing that they were not going to give her anything, she walked out the door.then the little men said to one another, "What shall we give her for being so impolite and having a wicked and envious heart that will never let her give a thing to anyone?"the first one said, "I grant that every day she shall grow uglier."the second one said, "I grant that a toad shall jump out of her mouth with every word she says."the third one said, "I grant that she shall die an unfortunate death."the girl looked outside for strawberries, but finding none, she went home angrily. And when she opened her mouth to tell her mother what had happened to her in the woods, a toad jumped out of her mouth with every word she said, so that everyone was repulsed by her.the stepmother now became even more angry, and she could think of nothing else but how she could torment the man's daughter, who nonetheless GREw more beautifulevery day. Finally she took a kettle, set it on the fire, and boiled yarn in it. When it was boiled, she hung it on the poor girl's shoulder, gave her an ax, and told her to go to the frozen river, chop a hole in the ice, and rinse the yarn. She obeyed, went to the river and chopped a hole in the ice. While she was chopping, a splendid carriage approached, with the king seated inside.the carriage stopped, and the king asked, "My child, who are you, and what are you doing here?""I am a poor girl, and I am rinsing yarn."the king felt compassion, and when he saw how very beautiful she was, he said to her, "Will you ride with me?""Gladly," she answered, for she was happy to get away from the mother and sister. So she got into the carriage and rode away with the king. When they arrived at his palace their wedding was celebrated with GREat pomp, just as the little men had promised the girl.A year later the young queen gave birth to a son, and when the stepmother heard of her good fortune, she came with her daughter to the palace, pretending that she wanted to pay her a visit. But when the king went out, and no one else was present, the wicked woman seized the queen by the head, and her daughter seized her by the feet, and lifting her out of her bed, they threw her out the window into the stream that flowed by.After that the ugly daughter lay down in the bed, and the old woman covered her up over her head. When the king returned and wanted to speak to his wife, the old woman said, "Quiet. Quiet. You cannot talk to her now. She has a very high fever. You must let her rest today."the king suspected no evil, and did not return until the next morning. As he then talked with his wife, and she answered him, a toad jumped out with every word, whereas previously a piece of gold had fallen out. When he asked what was the matter, the old woman said that it came from her high fever, and that she would soon lose it.During the night the kitchen boy saw a duck swimming along the gutter, and it said, "King, what are you doing? Are you awake or are you asleep?"Receiving no answer, it said, "What are my guests doing?"then the kitchen boy answered, "They are fast asleep."She asked further, "What is my little baby doing?"He answered, "He is sound asleep in his cradle."then, in the form of the queen, she went upstairs, nursed the baby, fluffed up his cover, tucked him in, and then she swam off through the gutter as a duck. She came in the same manner for two nights. On the third night, she said to the kitchen boy, "Go and tell the king to take his sword and on the threshold to swing it over me three times."the kitchen boy ran and told this to the king, who came with his sword and swung it over the spirit three times, and after the third time, his wife was standing before him, vigorous, alive, and healthy, as she had been before.the king was elated, but he kept the queen hidden in a room until the Sunday when the baby was to be baptized. At the baptism he said, "What does a person deserve who drags someone out of bed and throws him into the water?"the old woman answered, "The scoundrel deserves nothing better than to be put into a barrel stuck full of nails, and then rolled downhill into the water."then the king said, "You have pronounced your own sentence."He ordered such a barrel to be brought. the old woman and her daughter were put into it, and the top was hammered shut. Then the barrel was rolled downhill until it fell into the river.。

The Three Musketeers

"The Three Musketeers" is a fantastic movie, which is directed by Paul Anderson. And it is based on the novel of the same title by Alexandre Dumas, père,the 19th century French Romanticwriter .Set in the 17th century, it narrates the adventures of a young man named d'Artagnan after he leaves home to become a guard of the musketeers, just like his father. D'Artagnan is not one of the musketeers of the title; those are his friends Athos, Porthos, and Aramis, fighting together for the whole country. The movie begins with a steal, theThree Musketeers,Athos, Porthos, and Aramis , with the help of Athos' longtime lover, Milady, get the airship blueprints madeby Leonardo da Vinci successfully . However, they are betrayed by Milady, who gives the blueprints to the Duke of Buckingham . Upon returning to France, the Musketeers are forced to disbandby Cardinal Richelieu for their failure, and they end up on the streets of Paris.A year later, after arriving in Paris, d'Artagnan by coincidence separately encounters Athos, Porthos and Aramis accidentally offending all three, then scheduling duels with each at different time .Then, Athos brings Porthos and Aramis to the duel as his seconds. And there is an old saying in china:no fight no each other know, which is suitable for them. d'Artagnan prepares to continue with the duel but Richelieu's guards break it up. The threeare inspired by d'Artagnan and fight together and defeat the soldiers, but later are summoned before the young King LouisXIII and his wife,Queen Anne. Richelieu asks the king to execute the four, but the queen is impressed by their bravery and the king congratulates them and invites them to an event. Actually,Richelieu is the person who want to be a King,so he did something in order to control King Louis XIII and he orders Milady, who is actually working for him, to plant false love letters among Queen Anne's possessions, steal Queen Anne's diamond necklace, and take it to the Tower of London to frame Queen Anne as having an affair with the Duke of Buckingham. The affair would force King Louis to execute Queen Anne and declare war on England. At this point, the people would demand a more experienced leader and he think himself will be. Then The false letters (saying that the necklace has been given to Buckingham) are found by a maid and are given to King Louis, who is advised by Richelieu to set up a ball at which Queen Anne would be forced to wear the necklace. If she doesn't, then her affair is real, and there will be war against England. Queen Anne's lady-in-waiting Constance Bonacieux discovers Richelieu's plan and asks the Musketeers to stop him. The Musketeers plan to sail to England and retrieve the jewels before the ball. And then the good and the evil’s real battle begins.they fight for necklace forseveral times. Both them discuss the battle strategy. In London, Milady warns Buckingham that the Musketeers have arrived to take revenge on him. Milady instructs Buckingham of all their tendencies in battle, but Athos predicts this and the Musketeers resolve to do just the opposite. Buckingham captures d'Artagnan, but he was a decoy to let the Musketeers steal the airship. The Musketeers rescue d'Artagnan, demolishing the top floor of the Tower in the process. Athos was sure that Milady would have fled, taking the necklace with her as insurance, so he planted the Musketeers' manservant Planchet as her carriage driver to take her to an isolated spot where the airship could pick up the carriage, and they get the necklace. Finally,The Musketeers fly back to Paris with the necklace, but they are attacked by Rochefort in another airship, as Milady had given Richelieu copies of da Vinci's blueprints. Rochefort then reveals that he has Constance and threatend'Artagnan exchange the necklace for Constance and d'Artagnan has to do so, but Rochefort knocks him out and captures him as soon as the necklace is in his possession. He then proceeds to attack the Musketeers' ship, at first gaining the upper hand due to the superior size and weaponry of his airship. However, the Musketeers lure Rochefort into a storm cloud, burst the balloon of the airship and make the ship crash onto the Notre Dame Cathedral. On the roof, d'Artagnan duels and stabs Rochefort, who falls to his death. Meanwhile, Constance returns the necklace to Queen Anne, and The Musketeers arrive at the ball in Buckingham's damaged airship. After watching here,i was moved by them ,they were so bravery and have a spirit of knight, they are the real person who live by the motto "all for one, one for all",a motto which is first put forth byd'Artagnan. They fight for the country ,for the people without thinking themselves. Watching such a wonderful movie can benefit me a lot. the Three Lazy OnesA king had three sons whom he loved equally well, and he did not know which of them to appoint as king following his own death. When the time came for him to die he called them to his bed and said,“Dear children, I have thought of something that I will reveal to you. The one of you is the laziest shall become king after me.”the oldest one said,“Father, then the kingdom belongs to me, for I am so lazy that whenever I lie down to sleep, and a drop falls into my eyes, I will not even close them so that I can fall asleep.”the second one said,“Father, the kingdom belongs to me, for I am so lazy that when I am sitting by the fire warming myself, I would rather let my heels burn up than to pull my legs back.”the third one said,“Father, the kingdom is mine, for I am so lazy that if I were going to be hanged and already had the rope around my neck, and someone put into my hand a sharp knife with which to cut the rope, I would let myself be hanged rather than to lift my hand up to th e rope.”When the father heard this he said,“You have taken it the farthest and shall be king.”

• On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure chests they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And having been warned in dream not to return to Herod, they left for their own country by another road.
• When King Herod heard this, he was frightened, and all Jerusalem with him:and calling togehter all the chief priests and scribes of the people,he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born. They told him, "In Bethlehem of Judea:for so it has been written by the prophet:"and you ,Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler, who is to shepherd my people Israel ? "
• When they had heard the king, they set out;and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its rising, until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw that the star had stopped , they were overwhelmed with joy.

Although D'Artagnan is not able to join this elite corps immediately, he befriends the three most formidable musketeers of the age: Athos, Porthos and Aramis and gets involved in affairs of the state and court. In genre, The Three Musketeers is primarily a historical and adventure novel . However, Dumas also frequently works into the plot various injustices, abuses and absurdities of the old regime, giving the novel an additional political aspect at a time when the debate in France between republicans and monarchists was still fierce. The story was first serialized from March to July 1844, during the July Monarchy, four years before the French Revolution of 1848 violently established the Second Republic. The author's father, Thomas-Alexandre Dumas, had been a well-known General in France's Republican army during the French Revolutionary Wars. The story of d'Artagnan is continued in Twenty Years After and The Vicomte of Bragelonne: Ten Years later.A Musketeer of the Guard c.1660.In the very first sentences of his preface, Alexandre Dumas indicated as his source Mémoires de Monsieur d'Artagnan (1700), a historical novel by Gatien de Courtilz de Sandras, which Dumas discovered during his research for his history of Louis XIV, printed by Pierre Rouge in Amsterdam.[1] It was in this book, he said, that d'Artagnan relates his first visit to M. de Tréville, captain of the Musketeers, where in the antechamber he met three young Béarnese with the names Athos, Porthos and Aramis. This information struck the imagination of Dumas so much—he tells us—that he continued his investigation and finally encountered once more the names of the three musketeers in a manuscript with the title Mémoire de M. le comte de la Fère, etc.. Elated—so continues his yarn—he asked permission to reprint the manuscript. Permission granted:Now, this is the first part of this precious manuscript which we offer to our readers, restoring it to the title which belongs to it, and entering into an engagement that if (of which we have no doubt) this first part should obtain the success it merits, we will publish the second immediately. In the meanwhile, since godfathers are second fathers, as it were, we beg the reader to lay to our account, and not to that of the Comte de la Fère, the pleasure or the ennui he may experience. This being understood, let us proceed with our story.[2]The book he referred to was Mémoires de M. d'Artagnan, capitaine lieutenant de la première compagnie des Mousquetaires du Roi (Memoirs of Sir d'Artagnan, Lieutenant Captain of the first company of the King's Musketeers) by Gatien de Courtilz de Sandras (Cologne, 1700). The book was borrowed from the Marseille public library, and the card-index remains to this day; Dumas kept the book when he went back to Paris.[citation needed]Following Dumas's lead in his preface, Eugène d'Auriac (de la Bibliothèque Royale) in 1847 was able to write the biography of d'Artagnan: d'Artagnan, Capitaine-Lieutenant des Mousquetaires–Sa vie aventureuse– Ses duels– etc. based on Courtilz de Sandras.[3]The Three Musketeers was written in collaboration with Auguste Maquet, who also worked with Dumas on its sequels (Twenty Years After and The Vicomte of Bragelonne: Ten Years Later), as well as The Count of Monte Cristo. Maquet would suggest plot outlines after doing historical research; Dumas then expanded the plot, removing some characters, including new ones, and imbuing the story with his unmistakable style. The Three Musketeers was first published in serial form in the newspaper Le Siècle between March andz July 1844.Plot summary EditIn 1625 France, d'Artagnan (a poor young nobleman) leaves his family in Gascony and travels to Paris to join the Musketeers of the Guard. At an inn in Meung-sur-Loire, an older man deridesd'Artagnan's horse. Insulted, d'Artagnan demands a duel. The older man's companions beatd'Artagnan unconscious with a cooking pot and a metal tong that breaks his sword. His letter of introduction to Monsieur de Tréville, the commander of the Musketeers, is also stolen. D'Artagnan resolves to avenge himself upon the man (who is later revealed to be the Comte de Rochefort, an agent of Cardinal Richelieu, who is passing orders from the Cardinal to his spy Lady de Winter, usually called Milady de Winter or simply Milady.)In Paris, d'Artagnan visits De Tréville at the headquarters of the Musketeers, but without the letter, De Tréville politely refuses his application. He does, however, write a letter of introduction to an academy for young gentlemen which may prepare him for recruitment at a later time. From DeTréville's window, d'Artagnan sees Rochefort passing in the street below and rushes out of the building to confront him, but in doing so he offends three Musketeers, Athos, Porthos and Aramis, who each demand satisfaction; D'Artagnan must fight a duel with all of them that afternoon. Asd'Artagnan prepares himself for the first duel, he realizes that Athos' seconds are Porthos and Aramis, who are astonished that the young Gascon intends to duel them all. As d'Artagnan and Athos begin, Cardinal Richelieu's guards appear and try to arrest d'Artagnan and the three Musketeers for illegal dueling. Although outnumbered, the four men win the battle. D'Artagnan seriously wounds Jussac, one of the Cardinal's officers and a renowned fighter. After learning of this, King Louis XIII appoints d'Artagnan to Des Essart's company of the King's Guards and gives him forty pistoles.Depiction of the Cardinal's musketeers, the great rivals of the King's musketeers.D'Artagnan hires a servant, Planchet; finds lodgings; and reports to Monsieur des Essart. Des Essart's company is a less prestigious regiment in which he must serve for two years before being considered for the Musketeers. Shortly after, his landlord speaks to him about his wife Constance Bonacieux's kidnapping. When she is presently released, d'Artagnan falls in love at first sight with her. She works for Queen Anne of France, who is secretly conducting an affair with the Duke of Buckingham. The King, Louis XIII, gave the Queen a gift of diamond studs but she gives them to her lover as a keepsake. Cardinal Richelieu, who wants war between France and England, plans to expose the tryst and persuades the King to demand the Queen wear the diamonds to a soirée that the Cardinal is sponsoring. Constance tries to send her husband to London but the man is manipulated by Richelieu and does not go, so d'Artagnan and his friends intercede. En route, theCardinal's henchmen repeatedly attack them and only d'Artagnan and Planchet reach London. Before arriving, d'Artagnan is compelled to assault and nearly kill the Comte de Wardes, a friend of the Cardinal, cousin of Rochefort and Milady's lover. Although Milady stole two of the diamond studs, the Duke of Buckingham provide replacements while delaying the thief's return to Paris.D'Artagnan is thus able to return a complete set of jewels to Queen Anne just in time to save her honour. In gratitude, she gives him a beautiful ring.Shortly afterwards, d'Artagnan begins an affair with Madame Bonacieux. Arriving for an assignation, he sees signs of a struggle and discovers that Rochefort and M. Bonacieux, acting under the orders of the Cardinal, have assaulted and imprisoned her. D'Artagnan and his friends, now recovered from their injuries, return to Paris. D'Artagnan meets Milady de Winter officially, and recognizes her as one of the Cardinal's agents, but becomes infatuated with her until her maid reveals that Milady is indifferent toward him. Entering her quarters in the dark, he pretends to be the Comte de Wardes and trysts with her. He finds a fleur-de-lis branded on Milady's shoulder, marking her as a felon. Discovering his identity, Milady attempts to kill him but d'Artagnan eludes her. He is ordered to the siege of La Rochelle. He is informed that the Queen has rescued Constance from prison. In an inn, the musketeers overhear the Cardinal asking Milady to murder the Duke of Buckingham, a supporter of the Protestant rebels at La Rochelle who has sent troops to assist them. Richelieu gives her a letter that excuses her actions as under orders from the Cardinal himself, but Athos takes it. The next morning, Athos bets that he, d'Artagnan, Porthos, and Aramis, and their servants can hold the recaptured St. Gervais bastion against the rebels for an hour, for the purpose of discussing their next course of action. They resist for an hour and a half before retreating, killing 22 Rochellese in total. They warn Lord de Winter and the Duke of Buckingham. Milady is imprisoned on arrival in England but seduces her guard, Felton (a fictionalization of the real John Felton), and persuades him to allow her escape and to kill Buckingham himself. On her return to France, Milady hides in a convent where Constance is also staying. The naive Constance clings to Milady, who sees a chance for revenge on d'Artagnan, and fatally poisons Constance before d'Artagnan can rescue her. The Musketeers arrest Milady before she reaches Cardinal Richelieu. They bring an official executioner, put her on trial and sentence her to death. After her execution, the four friends return to the siege of La Rochelle. The Comte de Rochefort arrests d'Artagnan and takes him straight to the Cardinal. When questioned about Milady's execution, d'Artagnan presents her letter of pardon as his own. Impressed with d'Artagnan's willfulness and secretly glad to be rid of Milday, the Cardinal destroys the letter and writes a new order, giving the bearer a promotion to lieutenant in de Treville's company of musketeers, leaving the name blank. D'Artagnan offers the letter to Athos, Porthos and Aramis in turn but each refuses it, proclaiming d'Artagnan the most worthy among them. The siege of La Rochelle ends in 1628. Aramis retires to a monastery, Porthos marries his wealthy mistress, and Athos serves in the Musketeers under d'Artagnan until 1633, when he retires to his mansion in the countryside. The four Musketeers meet again in Twenty Years After (1845).Characters EditMusketeersAthos – Comte de la Fère: he has never recovered from his marriage to Milady and seeks solace in wine. The less cerebral of the quartet, he compensates with his homeric strength of body and character.D'Artagnan – Charles de Batz de Castelmore d'Artagnan: a young, foolhardy, brave and clever man seeking his fortune in Paris.Musketeers' servantsPlanchet – a young man from Picardy, he is seen by Porthos on the Pont de la Tournelle spitting into the river below. Athos is a strict master, and only permits his servant to speak in emergencies; he mostly communicates through sign language.Mousqueton – originally a Norman named Boniface; Porthos, however, changes his name to one that sounds better. He is a would-be dandy, just as vain as his master. In lieu of pay, he is clothed and lodged in a manner superior to that usual for servants, dressing grandly in his master's old clothes.Bazin – from the province of Berry, Bazin is a pious man who waits for the day his master (Aramis) will join the church, as he has always dreamed of serving a priest.OthersMilady de Winter – A beautiful and evil spy of the Cardinal, she is also Athos's ex-wife. He loses several opportunities, but their paths finally cross again towards the end of the novel.Constance Bonacieux – The Queen's seamstress and confidante. She appreciates his protection, but the relationship is never consummated.Monsieur Bonacieux – Constance's husband. He initially enlists d'Artagnan's help to rescue his wife from the Cardinal's guards, but when he himself is arrested, he and the Cardinal discover they have an understanding. Richelieu turns Monsieur Bonacieux against his wife, and he goes on to play a role in her abduction.Kitty – A servant of Milady de Winter. She dislikes her mistress, and adores d'Artagnan.Historical charactersKing Louis XIII of France: presented by Dumas as a fairly weak monarch often manipulated by his chief minister.Queen Anne of Austria – The unhappy Queen of France.Cardinal Richelieu: Armand Jean du Plessis, the King's chief minister, who plots against the Queen in resentment at having his advances rebuffed. Dumas describes him as being "36 or 37" though in 1625 Richelieu was 40.M. de Tréville – Captain of The Musketeers, and something of a mentor to d'Artagnan, though he has only a minor role.George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham - a handsome and charismatic man used to getting his way: he thinks nothing of starting a war between England and France for his personal convenience. His courtship of Anne of Austria gets her in trouble.John Felton – A puritan officer assigned to guard Milady and warned about her ways, he is nonetheless seduced and fooled by her in a matter of days and assassinates Buckingham at her request.。

The three spinners

Influence on later works

In 1939, American author Tiffany Thayer published a book entitled Three Musketeers(Thayer, 1939). This is a re-telling of the story in Thayer's words, true to the original plot but told in a different order and with different points of view nd emphasis from the original. The modern Chinese author Jin Yong is also said to have been influenced by his works.

Musketeers' servants
Planchet(D'Artagnan) - A clever fellow whom Porthos found to serve D'Artagnan Grimaud(Athos0 - A Breton, trianed to speak onlu in emergencies and mostly communicate through sign language. Mousqueton(Porthos) - A would-be dandy, just as vain as his master, whose only pay is his master's old clothes. Bazin(Aramis) - Waits for the day his master will join the church, as Bazin has always dreamed to serve a priest.
