Section ⅠReading and Thinking (1)阅读理解。

AHelping and supporting others may be key to living a longer and healthier life, according to new research from the University of Basel in Switzerland. The findings published in the journal Evolution and Human Behaviour, show that grandparents who care for their grandchildren enjoy longer lifespans. So do old people who care for others within their social networks.Using data from the Berlin Aging Study, the researchers analysed the longevity(寿命) and caregiving habits of more than 500 old people between the ages of 70 and 103. The study compared grandparents who acted as occasional caregivers with those who did not. It also compared these grandparents with old adults who did not have grandchildren but cared for people within their social networks. Those grandparents who did not play the role of attending to grandchildren were more likely to have died within just five years of the testing period. While those old adults who provided support to their family lived for an extra seven years on average and those provided support to their social networks lived for an extra four years on average.Although the new study only focused on old adults, it’s safe to assume that the health benefits of helping and taking care of others also reach those of all ages. However, it’s important to note that too much caregiving often has just the opposite effect. There’s a clear link between too much caregiving and a number of negative physical and mental health consequences.1. How many groups of old people are involved in the study?A. Two.B. Three.C. Four.D. Five.解析:细节理解题。

高中英语 Unit 4 Wildlife protection Period 2 Reading课后阅读训练 新人教版必修2

Unit 4 Wildlife protection Period 2 Reading课后阅读训练Ⅰ. 阅读理解ACan we give a hand to those endangered animals?Yes, we may only do a littlebit, but together our small actions add up to a lot.1. Protect wildlife habitatPerhaps the greatest threat that faces many species is the widespreaddestruction of habitat. Cutting down forests, farming, and development all result in loss of wildlife habitat. In areas where rare species live, habitat destruction can quickly force a species to extinction. By protecting habitat, entire communities of animals can be protected together naturally. Parks and reserves are now all too often the only habitats that are left untouched by habitat destruction.2. Reduce the threat of invasive(入侵的)speciesThe spread of non-native species has greatly reduced native populations around the world. Invasive species compete with native species for resources(资源)and habitat. They can even prey on native species directly, forcing native species towards extinction.3. Place decals(贴花纸)on windowsIt is reported that as many as one million birds in the United States die each year because of collisions(碰撞)with windows. You can help reduce the number of collisions simply by placing decals on the windows in your home and office.4. Slow down when drivingMany native animals have to live in developed areas and this means they must move in human-living areas. One of the biggest obstacles(障碍)to them is that created by roads. Roads divide habitat and present a constant risk to any animal attempting to cross from one side to the other. So when you drive out, slow down and keep an eye out for wildlife.【语篇概述】我们能为濒危动物做点什么?本文给出了很好的建议, 我们每个人都可以为此伸出援手, 尽自己的微薄之力。

The average length of an adult blue whale is 79 to 88 feet and the average weight is 130 to 150 tons. Blue whales prefer cold waters and open seas and prefer not to go near coastal areas; however, some whales have been seen off the coast of Peru. The blue whale mostly eats krill(磷虾). It can eat several tons of krill daily. Researchers once believed that the blue whale only eats in the summer, seldom eating during the rest of the year, but recent research has suggested that some blue whales in the north may eat all year round and that blue whales traveling with empty stomachs may stop eating during migration and begin feeding again in “wintering” areas.Over 350,000 whales have been hunted and killed, and by the 1960s, blue whales were on the edge of dying out. There are probably only around 2,500 blue whales left in the oceans now and they are legally protected despite opposition by the whaling industry.1.The blue whale is said to be the largest animals in the Earth’s history.2.Blue whales prefer warm waters and open seas and prefer not to go near coastal areas;3.The blue whale mostly feeds on krill and it can eat several tons of krill every two days.4.Blue whales traveling with empty stomachs may stop to eat during migration.5.Over 350,000 whales have been hunted and killed, and by the 1980s, blue whales were on the edge of dying out.6.The blue whales are legally protected despite opposition by the whaling industry.实战演练:一. 根据文章内容填空One day, Daisy______ a strange dream.
