Summary and Comment
This article attaches the importance to reflective teaching and reflection whose notion originates from John Dewey. As Dewey puts it, reflective attitude should be shown in many aspects, e.g. learners and their interest, teaching context, relationship between learners and curriculum, teachers’ knowledge and so on. Schon furthered the notion of reflection and argued that reflection be the goal of lifelong professional development, thus teachers grow professionally though becoming listeners, observers, thinkers and researchers in the process of reflective practice.
Dewey further argued that educators should use experience to respond to various challenging conditions. By combining theories in L2 learning and teaching, teachers need to develop their ability to reflect on their teaching. In trying to reach the goal of purposeful reflection in teaching, teachers need to restore their experience, be aware of the consequences and be accountable for their actions.
As far as I am concerned, I am in for reflective teaching and reflection. In one way, reflective teaching develops the quality of teaching through continuous improvements. In another, it makes teachers professionally developed in a long run.
As for the idea that reflective teaching develops the quality of teaching through continuous improvements, here are some elaborations. Firstly, it gives educators new opportunities to reflect on and assess their teaching, making their teaching more efficient if they make changes afterwards. Secondly, it enables teachers to explore and test new ideas, methods, approaches, and materials, which brings new ideas to teaching practice. Thirdly, it provides opportunity to assess how effective the new approaches were, then they can make decisions about which new approaches to include in the school’s curriculum, instruction, and assessment plans. Last but not least, teachers can share feedback with fellow team members making teaching atmosphere more friendly and effective.
The ability to reflect on what, why and how we do things also makes a good teacher. Reflection is the key to successful learning for teachers. It is also clear that reflection is an underpinning value and is the key to becoming a professional teacher.。
