礼的实质是处理人与人之间的关系;孤立的一个人,不会发生礼的问题,只有在与他人相处、交往和比较时,才会发生礼的要求和行为。

礼仪本身是有差等的,不可能做到互相对等,那就要从内心情感和交往形式上去寻求互相对等的因素,孟子指出:“恭敬之心,礼也”;“辞让之心,礼之端也”。

内心情感的对等表现为恭敬;交往形式的对等表现为辞让,从而使人们自觉自愿地践行礼的要求和规范。

所谓恭敬,“在貌为恭,在心为敬”,分别属于容貌和内心情感的范畴。

然而,对于同一践礼主体而言,无论是貌恭还是心敬,都只能在主体与客体的交往中呈现出来,都是主体指向客体的行为。

面貌与内心是统一的,内心敬重,面貌总会好看;内心鄙弃,容貌就会不那么好看。

恭敬名为两个概念,实为一个内容,那就是敬的感情,即发自内心的尊敬和敬重。

孔子十分重视敬在礼行为中的意义,他从人与禽兽之别的角度,指出为孝必敬,“今之孝者,是谓能养。

至于犬马,皆能有养。

不敬,何以别乎?”孔子重视祭礼和丧礼,却更在乎敬的内涵,《礼记·檀弓》记载弟子子路的回忆,“吾闻诸夫子:丧礼,与其哀不足而礼有余,不若礼不足而哀有余也。

祭礼,与其敬不足而礼有余,不若礼不足敬有余也”。

孔子甚至认为,敬是为政之本,在各种礼仪中,敬的情感最为重要,而国君的婚礼又最能体现敬的情感。

国君亲迎新娘,既是爱慕又是敬重,把这种爱与敬的感情推而广之,就是治理国家的根本。

所谓辞让,亦称退让,“应进而迁曰退,应受而推曰让”。

辞让是与恭敬紧密相连的德性行为,其本质是厚人薄己、尊人卑己。

这在礼的迎送、授受仪式中表现得最为突出,具体为“三揖三让”。

“揖”是拱手致意,展示主人对客人的尊重和关注,“三揖”是凡入门将右曲揖、北面揖、当碑揖。
