Unit8 Sports(The First Period)Ⅰ. Teaching Goals:1. Talk about sports.2. Talk about the Olympic Games.3. Talk about interests and hobbies.4. Use the Future Passive Voice.5. Talk about what will be done.6. Write a sports star profile.Ⅱ. Teaching time: Four periodsⅢ. Background InformationⅠ. The Olympic GamesIn ancient Greece athletic festivals were very important and had strong reli gious associations. The Olympian athletic festival, held every four years in honou r of Zeus, eventually lost its local character, became first a national event, and then, after the rules against foreign competitors had been waived, international. No one knows exactly how far back the Olympic Games go, but some official records date from 776 B. C.The Games took place in August on the plain by Mount Olympus. Many thousands of spectators gathered from all parts of Greece, but married women and dishonoured persons were not allowed to compete. The exact sequence of events is uncertain, but events included boy’s gymnastics, horse-racing, field events such as discus and javelin throwing, and the very important foot races. There was also boxing and wrestling and special tests of varied ability such as the pentathlon, the winner of which excelled in running, jumping, discus and javelin throwing and wrestling. The evening of the third day was devoted to sacrificial offerings to the heroes of the day, and the fourth day, that of the full moon, was set aside as a holy day. On the sixth and last day, all the victors were crowned with holy garlands of wild olive from a sacred wood. After an uninterrupted history of almost 1 200 years, the Games were abolished in A. D. 394, the christian era, because of their pagan origin. It was over 1 500 years before there was another such international athletic gathering. The Greek instituation was revived in 1896 and the first small meeting took place in Athens.Nowadays, the Games are held in different countries in turn. The host country provides vast facilities, including a stadium, swimming pools and living accommodation, but competing countries pay their own athletes’ expenses. Athletic contests are still the main feature, but now many more sports are represented, women compete, the ancient pentathlon, for example, has been modified into a more comprehensive test, and the marathon races, initiated in 1896, are now a celebrated event. The Olympics start with the arrival in the stadium of a torch, lighted on Mount Olympus by the sun’s rays. It is carried by a succession of runners to the stadium. The torch symbolizes the continuation of the ancient Greek athletic ideals, and it burns throughout the games until the closing ceremony. The well-known Olympic Flag, however, is a modern conception: the five interlocking rings symbolize the uniting of all five continents participating in the Games. The 27th Olympic Games—the new Millennium’s first Olympic Games took place in Sydney, Australia between 15 September and 1 October, 2000. Our Chinese team won 28 gold medals in the Games, 12 more than its previous best.Ⅱ. The Chief Events in the Olympic Games1. Record after Teaching____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Reference for Teaching一、异域风情Extreme SportsRick Stevenson, 16 years old, spends every minute he can on the mountain. He and his friends go snowboarding every weekend. “It’s great,” he says. “The winds are so strong, the boards go 50 miles an hour.” His friend Laura Fields agrees. “No one goes skiing any more,” She says,“That’s for the old folks.”Rick and Laura are part of a new trend in sports. Its philosophy(宗旨) is to get as close to the edge as possible. And more and more young athletes are taking part in these risky(冒险的)activities called “extreme sports” or “X-spor ts.”In the past, young athletes would play baseball. Today, they want risk and excitement—the closer to the edge, the better. They snowboard over cliffs and mountain-bike down steep mountains. They wind-surf near hurricanes and bungy-jump from towers.Extreme sports started as an alternative(选择余地) to more expensive sports such as golf. A city kid who didn’t have the money to buy expensive sports equipment could get a skateboard and have fun. But now it has bee a whole new area of sports, with specialized equipment and high levels of skill. There’s even a special Olympics for extreme sports, called the Winter X-Games, which includes snow mountain biking and ice climbing. What makes extreme sports so popular? “People love the risk,” says Murray Nussbaum, wh o sells sports equipment. “City people want to be outdoors on the weekend and do something challenging. The new equipment is so much better that people can take more risks without getting hurt.” An athlete adds, “Sure there’s a risk. Once you go mountain r iking or snowboarding, it’s impossible to go back to bike riding or skiing. It’s just too boring.”Now even the older crowed is starting to join in. Every weekend groups of friendsin their early 30s get together. During the week they work as puter programmers in the same office. On Sundays they rent mountain bikes that cost 2 000 each and ride down steep mountains together.Extreme sports are certainly not for everyone. Most people still prefer to play basketball or watch sports on TV. But extreme sports are definitely gaining in popularity. “These sports are fresh and exciting. It’s the wave of the future.” says Nussbaum. Do you like popular songs more? Do you like coffee more than tea? Do you prefer to watch TV at home? Which is more interesting to you? Would you rather go there by bus or on foot? Which is your preference—movie stars or sports stars? Which do you like better? Which do you prefer, large or small? Would you prefer going there by bus or by bike? “讲述你喜欢什么”常用表达I prefer Mc Donald’s fast food.
