2020年英语四级阅读理解模拟试题及答案(卷四)Many private institutions of higher education around the country are in danger. Not all will be saved, andperhaps not all deserve to be saved. There are low-quality schools just as there are low-quality business. We have no obligation to save them simply because they exist. But many thriving institutions that deserve to continue are threatened. They are doing a fine job educationally, but they are caught in a financial squeeze, with no way to reduce rising costs or increase revenuessignificantly. Raising tuition doesn’t bring in more revenue, for each time tuition goes up, the enrollment goes down, or the amount that must be given away in student aid goes up. Schools are bad businesses, whether public or private, not usually because of mismanagement but because of the nature of the enterprise. They lose money on every customer, and they can go bankrupt either from too few students or too many students. Even a very good college is a very bad business. It is such colleges, thriving but threatened, I worry about. Low enrollment is not their chief problem. Even with full enrollments, they may go under. Efforts to save them, and preferably to keep them private, are a national necessity. There is no basis for arguing that private schools are inherently (固有地)better than public schools. Examples to the contrary abound. Anyone can name state universities and colleges thatrank as the finest in the nation and the world. It is now inevitable that public institutions will be dominant, and therefore diversity is a national necessity. Diversity in the way we support schools tends to give us a healthy diversity in the forms of education. In an imperfect society such as ours, uniformity of education throughout the nation could be dangerous. In an imperfect society, diversity is a positive good. Enthusiastic supporters of public higher education know the importance of sustaining private higher education.试题:Choose correct answers to the question:1.According to the author's opinion, schools are bad businesses because of _______.A. mismanagementB. too few studentsC. financial squeezeD. their characteristics2.The author used the phrase “go under" in Para. 3 to mean "_______".A. get into difficultiesB. have low enrollmentC. have little moneyD. bring in more money3.We can reasonably conclude from this passage that the author made an appeal to the public in order to support_____A. public institutionB. private schoolsC. uniformity of educationD. diversity of education4.Which of the following is NOT mentioned about private schools?A. High-quality private schools deserve to be saved.B. If the tuition of the private schools is raised, the enrollment goes down.C. There are many cases to show that public schools are better than private schools.D. Private schools are more profitable than public schools.5.Which of the following ways could possibly save private schools?A. Raising tuition.B. Full enrollment.C. National awareness and support.D. 2020年公共英语四级考试阅读模拟试题5

2020年公共英语四级考试阅读模拟试题5When one looks back upon the fifteen hundred years that are the life span of the English language, he should be able to notice a number of significant truths. The history of our language has always been a history of constant change—at times a slow, almost imperceptible change, at other times a violent collision between two languages. Our language has always been a living growing organism, it has never been static. Another significant truth that emerges from such a study is that language at all times has been the possession not of one class or group but of many. 『At one extreme it has been the property of the common, ignorant folk, who have used it in the daily business of their living, much as they have used their animals or the kitchen pots and pans.』① At the other extreme it has been the treasure of those who have respected it as an instrument and a sign of civilization, and who have struggled by writing it down to give it some permanence, order, dignity, and if possible, a little beauty. As we consider our changing language, we should note here two developments that are of special and immediate importance to us. One is that since the time of the Anglo-Saxons there has been an almost complete reversal of the different devices for showing the relationship of words in a sentence. Anglo-Saxon (old English) was a language of many inflections. Modern English has few inflections. We must now dependlargely on word order and function words to convey the meanings that the older language did by means of changes in the forms of words. Function words, you should understand, are words such as prepositions, conjunctions, and a fewothers that are used primarily to show relationships among other words. A few inflections, however, have survived. And when some word inflections come into conflict with word order, there may be trouble for the users of the language, as weshall see later when we turn our attention to such maters as WHO or WHOM and ME or I. The second fact we must consider is that as language itself changes, our attitudes towardlanguage forms change also. 『The eighteenth century, for example, produced from various sources a tendency to fix the language into patterns not always set in and grew, until atthe present time there is a strong tendency to restudy andre-evaluate language practices in terms of the ways in which people speak and write.』②1.In contrast to the earlier linguists, modern linguists tend to .A. attempt to continue the standardization of thelanguageB. evaluate language practices in terms of current speech rather than standards or proper patternsC. be more concerned about the improvement of thelanguage than its analysis or historyD. be more aware of the rules of the language usage2.Choose the appropriate meaning for the word“inflection” used in line 4 of paragraph 2.A. Changes in the forms of words.B. Changes in sentence structures.C. Changes in spelling rules.D. Words that have similar meanings.3.Which of the following statements is not mentioned in the passage?A. It is generally believed that the year 1500 can be set as the beginning of the modern English language.B. Some other languages had great influence on the English language at some stages of its development.C. The English language has been and still in a state of relatively constant change.D. Many classes or groups have contributed to the development of the English language.4. The author of these paragraphs is probably a(an) .A. historianB. philosopherC. anthropologistD. linguist5.Which of the following can be best used as the title of the passage?A. 2020公共英语四级模拟试题:阅读2020公共英语四级模拟试题:阅读If you intend using humor in your talk to make people smile, you must know how to identify shared experiences and problems. Your humor must be relevant to the audience and should help to show them that you are one of them or that you understand their situation and are in sympathy with theirpoint of view. Depending on whom you are addressing, the problems will be different. If you are talking to a group of managers, you may refer to the disorganized methods of their secretaries; alternatively if you are addressing secretaries, you may want to comment on their disorganized bosses. Here is an example, which I heard at a nurses' convention, of a story which works well because the audience all sharedthe same view of doctors. A man arrives in heaven and isbeing shown around by St. Peter. He sees wonderful accommodations, beautiful gardens, sunny weather, and so on. Everyone is very peaceful, polite and friendly until, waiting in a line for lunch, the new arrival is suddenly pushed aside by a man in a white coat, who rushes to the head of the line, grabs his food and stomps over to a table by himself. “Whois that?" the new arrival asked St. Peter. “On, that's God," came the reply, “but sometimes he thinks he's a doctor."If you are part of the group which you are addressing, you will be in a position to know the experiences andproblems which are common to all of you and it'll be appropriate for you to make a passing remark about theinedible canteen food or the chairman's notorious bad tastein ties. With other audiences you mustn't attempt to cut in with humor as they will resent an outsider making disparaging remarks about their canteen or their chairman. You will be on safer ground if you stick to scapegoats like the Post Office or the telephone system. If you feel awkward being humorous, you must practice so that it becomes more natural. Include a few casual and apparently off-the-cuff remarks which you can deliver in a relaxed and unforced manner. Often it's the delivery which causes the audience to smile, so speak slowly and remember that a raised eyebrow or an unbelieving look may help to show that you are making a light-hearted remark.Look for the humor. It often comes from the unexpected. A twist on a familiar quote “If at first you don't succeed, give up" or a play on words or on a situation. Search for exaggeration and understatements. Look at your talk and pick out a few words or sentences which you can turn about and inject with humor.41. To make your humor work, you should__________[A] take advantage of different kinds of audience.[B] make fun of the disorganized people.[C] address different problems to different people.[D] show sympathy for your listeners.42. The joke about doctors implies that, in the eyes of nurses, they are ___________[A] impolite to new arrivals.[B] very conscious of their godlike role.[C] entitled to some privileges.[D] very busy even during lunch hours.43. It can be inferred from the text that public services __________[A] have benefited many people.[B] are the focus of public attention.[C] are an inappropriate subject for humor.[D] have often been the laughing stock.44. To achieve the desired result, humorous stories should be delivered _________[A] in well-worded language.[B] as awkwardly as possible.[C] in exaggerated statements.[D] as casually as possible.45. The best title for the text may be__________[A] Use Humor Effectively.[B] Various Kinds of Humor.[C] Add Humor to Speech.[D] Different Humor Strategies.参考答案CBDDA。

Part II Reading Comprehension (Skimming and Scanning)Directions: In this part, you will have 15 minutes to go over the passage quickly and answer the questions on Answer sheet1.Why We LaughWe start finding things laughable — or not laughable —early in life. An infant first smiles at approximately eight days of age. Many psychologists assume this is his first sign of simple pleasure— food, warmth and comfort. At six months or less, the infant laughs to express complex pleasures—such as the light of Mother's smiling face. Between the ages ofsix months and one year, the baby learns to laugh for essentially the same reasons he will laugh throughout his life, says Dr. Jacob Levine, associate professor of psychology at Yale University. Dr. Levine says that peoplelaugh to express mastery over an anxiety. Picture what happens when a father throws his child into the air. Thechild will probably laugh—but not the first time. In spiteof his enjoyment of "flying", he is too anxious to laugh. How does he know Daddy will catch him? Once the child realizes he will be caught, he is free to enjoy the game. But more importantly, says Dr. Levine, the child laughs because he has mastered an anxiety.Adult laughter is more subtle, but we also laugh at what we used to fear. The feeling of achievement, or lack of it, remains a crucial factor. Giving a first dinner party is an anxious event for a new bride. Will the food be good? Willthe guests get along? Will she be a good hostess? Will the knives and forks, cups and saucers be all right? All goes well; the party is over. Now she laughs freely. Her pleasure from having proved her success is the foundation for her pleasure in recalling the evening activities. She couldn't enjoy the second pleasure without the first, more important one—her mastery of anxiety.Laughter is a social response triggered by cues.Scientists have not determined a brain center for laughter, and they are perplexed by patients with certain types ofbrain damage who go into laughing fits for no apparent reason. The rest of us require company, and a reason to laugh. When we find ourselves alone in a humorous situation, our usual response is to smile. Isn't it hue that our highest compliment to a humorous book is to say that "it made melaugh out of loud"? Of course, we do occasionally laugh alone;but when we do, we are, in a sense, socializing with ourselves. We laugh at a memory, or at a part of ourselves.Of course, we don't always need a joke to make us laugh. People who survive frightening situations, such as a fire oran emergency plane landing, frequently relate their story of the crisis with laughter. Part of the laughter express relief that everything is now all right. During a crisis, definitely, everyone mobilizes energy to deal with the potential problem. If the danger is avoided, we need to release that energy. Some people cry; others laugh. When we are made the target of a joke, either on apersonal or impersonal level, we are emotionally involved in it. Consequently, we won't be able to laugh.Knowing that laughter blunts emotion, we can better understand why we sometimes laugh when nothing is funny. We laugh during moments of anxiety because we feel no masteryover the situation, claims Dr. Levine. He explains, "veryoften compulsive laughter is a learned response. If we laugh, it expresses good feelings and the fact that we are able to cope. When we're in a situation in which we can't cope, we laugh to reassure ourselves that we can!"How often have we laughed at a funeral or upon hearingbad news? We laugh to deny an unendurable reality until weare strong enough to accept it. Laughter also breaks our tension. However, we may also be laughing to express relief that the tragedy didn't happen to us. We laugh before givinga big party, before delivering a speech, or while getting a traffic ticket, to say, "This isn't bothering me. See? I am laughing."。

2020年英语四级阅读理解模拟试题及答案(卷三)

2020年英语四级阅读理解模拟试题及答案(卷三)Engineering students are supposed to be examples of practicality and rationality, but when it comes to mycollege education I am an idealist and a fool. In high school I wanted to be an electrical engineer and, of course, any sensible student with my aims would have chosen a college with a large engineering department, famous reputation and lots of good labs and research equipment. But that‘s not what I did.I chose to study engineering at a small liberal-arts(文科)university that doesn‘t even offer a major in electrical engineering. Obviously, this was not a practical choice; I came here for more noble reasons. I wanted a broad education that would provide me with flexibility and a value system to guide me in my career.I wanted to open my eyes and expand my vision by interacting with people who weren’t studying science orengineering. My parents, teachers and other adults praised me for such a sensible choice. They told me I was wise and mature beyond my18 years, and I believed them.I headed off to college sure I was going to have an advantage over those students who went to big engineering “factories”where they didn‘t care if you have values or were flexible. I was going to be a complete engineer: technical genius and sensitive humanist(人文学者)all in one.Now I‘m not so sure. Somewhere along the way my noble idealscrashed into reality, as all noble ideals eventually do. After three years of struggling to balance math, physics and engineering courses with liberal-arts courses,I have learned there are reasons why few engineering students try to reconcile(协调) engineering with liberal-arts courses in college. The reality that has blocked my path to become the typical successful student is that engineering and the liberal arts simply don’t mix as easily as I assumed in high school. Individually they shape a person in very different ways; together they threaten to confuse. The struggle to reconcile the two fields of study is difficult.试题:Choose correct answers to the question:1. The author chose to study engineering at a small liberal-arts university because he ________.A. intended to be a combination of engineer and humanistB. wanted to be an example of practicality and rationalityC. intended to be a sensible student with noble idealsD. wanted to coordinate engineering with liberal-arts courses in college2. According to the author,by interacting with people who study liberal arts, engineering students can ________.A. broaden their horizonsB. become noble idealistsC. receive guidance in their careersD. balance engineering and the liberal arts3. In the eyes of the author,a successful engineering student is expected ________.A. to be imaginative with a value system to guide himB. to be a technical genius with a wide visionC. to have an excellent academic recordD. to be wise and mature4. The author‘s experience shows that he was ________.A. creativeB. irrationalC. ambitiousD. Unrealistic5. The word“they”in“together they threaten to confuse.”(Line 3,Para. 5) refers to ________.A. practicality and rationalityB. engineering and the liberal artsC. reality and noble idealsD. flexibility and a value system1.[C] 事实细节题。

2020年英语四级阅读理解模拟试题及答案(卷二)Not all sounds made by animals serve as language, and we have only to turn to that extraordinary discovery of echolocation (回声定位) in bats to see a case in which the voice plays a strictly practical role.To get a full appreciation of what this means we must turn first to some recent human inventions. Everyoneknows that if he shouts near a wall or a mountainside, an echo will come back. The further off this solid obstacle, the longer time it will take for the return of the echo. A sound made by tapping on the main body of a ship will be reflected from the sea bottom, and by measuring the time interval between the taps andthe receipt of the echoes the depth of the sea at that point can be calculated. So was born the echo-sounding equipment, now in general use in ships. Every solid object will reflect a sound, varying according to the size and nature of the object. A shoal of fish will do this. So it is a comparatively simple step fromlocating the sea bottom to locating a shoal of fish. With experience, and with improved equipment, it is now possible not only to locate fish but to tell if it is herring, cod, or other well-known fish, by the pattern of its echo.A few years ago it was found that certain bats emit squeaks (吱吱声) and by receiving 'he echoes they could locate and steer clear of obstacles--or locate flying insects on which they feed. This echolocation in bats is often compared with radar, the principle of which is similar.试题:Choose correct answers to the question:1.The main purpose of this passage is to ______.A. describe that animals can make different soundsB. prove that animals' voices can play practical rolesC. inspire the readers to make more inventionsD. startle the readers with some shocking facts2. 2020 年公共英语考试四级模拟试题( 4 )Section III Reading Comprehension(45 points)阅读理解Text 1No one should be forced to wear a uniform under any circumstance. Uniforms are demeaning to the human spirit and totally unnecessary in a democratic society. Uniforms tellthe world that the person who wears one has no value as an individual but only lives to function as a part of the whole. The individual in a uniform loses all self-worth. There arethose who say that wearing a uniform gives a person a senseof identification with a large, more important concept. Whatcould be more important than the individual oneself? If an organization is so weak that it must rely on cloth and buttonsto inspire its members, that organization has no right tocontinue its existence.Others say that the practice of making persons wear uniforms, say in school, eliminates all envy and competition ina matter of dress, such that a poor person who cannot affordgood-quality clothing, why would anyone strive to be better? Itis only a short step from forcing everyone to wear the sameclothing to forcing everyone to drive the same car, have thesame type of house, eat the same type of food. Whenthis happens, all incentive to improve one’s life is removed. Why would parents bother to work hard so that their childrencould have a better life than they had when they know thattheir children are going to be forced to have exactly thesame life that they had? Uniforms also hurt the economy.Right now, billions of dollars are spent on thefashion industry yearly.Thousands of persons are employed in designing, creating, and marketing different types of clothing. If everyone wereforced to wear uniforms, artistic personnel would beunnecessary. Salespersons would be superfluous as well : why bother to sell the only items that are available? The wearingof uniforms would destroy the fashion industry which in turnwould have a ripple effect on such industries as advertisingand promotion. Without advertising, newspapers, magazines, and television would not be able to remain in business. Ourentire information and entertainment industries would founder.41、The author ’s viewpoint on uniforms can best bedescribed as __________.A.practicalB.hystericalC.radicalD.critical42、Judged from its style, this passage might be found in__________.A. a children’s comics bookB. an editorial in a paperC. a sociology textbookD. a political platform43、It can be inferred that the author believes that__________.A. individuals have no self-worth when they becomepart of an organizationB. individuals are more important than organizationsC. individuals are not so important as organizationsD. individuals are the same important as organizations44、The author brings in the example of a parent strivingto make life better for his children to make the point that__________.A. parents have responsibilities for their childrenB. uniforms would be less expensive than clothing for childrenC. uniforms cause dissension between parents and childrenD. individual motivation would be destroyed by uniforms( 本题分值: 1.5 分) 【准确答案】 D45、The last word of the passage "founder" probably means __________.A.collapseB.shrinkC.disappearD.establish阅读 (2)公共英语 PETS四级考试由笔试和口试组成。

2020上半年公共英语四级模拟试题及答案(阅读)
2020上半年公共英语四级模拟试题及答案(阅读)
Early in the age of affluence (富裕) that followed World War Ⅱ,an American retailing analyst named Victor Lebow proclaimed, “Our enormously productive economy...demands
that we make consumption our way of life, that we convert the buying and use of goods into rituals, that we seek our
spiritual satisfaction, our ego satisfaction, in consumption. We need things consumed, burned up, worn out, replaced and discarded at an ever increasing rate." Americans have responded to Lebow's call, and much of the world has followed. Consumption has become a central pillar of life in industrial lands and is even embedded in social values. Opinion surveys
in the world's two largest economics-Japan and the United States-show consumerist definitions of success becoming ever more prevalent. Overconsumption by the world's fortunate is an environmental problem unmatched in severity by anything
but perhaps population growth. Their surging exploitation of resources threatens to exhaust or unalterably spoil forests, soils, water, air and climate. Ironically, high consumption may be a mixed blessing in human terms, too. The time-honored values of integrity of character, good work, friendship,
family and community have often been sacrificed in the rush
to riches. Thus many in the industrial lands have a sense that their world of plenty is somehow hollow, that misled by
a consumerist culture, they have been fruitlessly attempting
to satisfy what are essentially social, psychological and spiritual needs with material things. Of course, the
opposite of overconsumption, poverty, is no solution to
either environmental or human problems. It is infinitely worse for people and bad for the natural world too. Dispossessed (被剥夺得一无所有的) peasants slash, and burn their way into the rain forests of Latin America, and hungry nomads (游牧民族) turn their herds out onto fragile African grassland, reducing it to desert. If environmental destruction results when people have either too little or too much, we are left to wonder how much is enough .What level of consumption can the earth support ?When dose having more cease to add noticeably to human satisfaction?
1. The emergence of the affluent society after World War II .
A) led to the reform of the retailing system
B) resulted in the worship of consumerism
C )ve rise to the dominance of the new egoism
D) gave birth to a new generation of upper class consumers
2. Apart from enormous productivity, another important impetus to high consumption is
A) the people's desire for a rise in their living standards
B) the concept that one's success is measured by how much they consume
C) the imbalance that has existed between production and consumption
D) the conversion of the sale of goods into rituals
3. Why does the author say high consumption is a mixed blessing?
A) Because poverty still exists in an affluent society.
B) Because overconsumption won't last long due to unrestricted population growth.
C) Because traditional rituals are often neglected in the process of modernization.
D) Because moral values are sacrificed in pursuit of material satisfaction.
4. According to the passage, consumerist culture .
A) will not alleviate poverty in wealthy countries
B) will not aggravate environmental problems
C) cannot thrive on a fragile economy
D) cannot satisfy human spiritual needs
5. It can be inferred from the passage that .
A) human spiritual needs should match material affluence
B) whether high consumption should be encouraged is still an issue
C) how to keep consumption at a reasonable level remains a problem
D) there is never an end to satisfying people's material needs
