4.把衔接与连贯研究和语篇分析紧密结合起来
本书作者认为，语篇的衔接和连贯是语篇研究的核心，也是语篇研究 能否站得住脚的关键。如果一个语篇前后衔接，意思连贯，那么，其 可接受性则八九不离十。 以及物性一章(Chapter2)为例。本书认为，人们思想中要集中反映的 主观世界无外乎是六个过程。这些过程不是在真空中发生的，它们涉 及到一定的实体（参与者）、时间、空间和方式（环境因子），这就 是及物性。(P28)及物性以句子内部过程与参与者的关系而体现语篇 的连贯；更重要的是，同样的过程集中在一起又反映了语篇的特点。 如本书在分析一份药物说明书后发现，书中描写的过程大都是物质过 程。另外，鲁迅小说《狂人日记》中反映心理过程的句子较多，这是 ”因为这部小说的思想主题是透过所谓狂人的观察，他的耳闻目睹和 心理分析而揭露封建社会的“。因此，从这个角度讲，这是一部从衔 接和连贯出发的语篇分析著作。
