第三部分阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分, 满分40分)
A
You can hear a soft sound as they approach. They look similar to skateboards but are actually quite different. They are longboards and are rapidly becoming a more common and stylish way to quickly get around.
Longboarding began in the 1950s, originally known as sidewalk surfing because riders would move in a way that resembled catching a wave. The boards got their name because they are much longer and wider than skateboards, usually between 90 and 150 centimeters in length. Every kind of longboard consists of trucks, four
wheels and a long deck. The size and shape vary, however, depending on how a rider plans to use it. Unlike their
shorter cousins, longboards are not intended for doing tricks. Their most basic use is for travel. Commuting (往返) via longboard is now common on college campuses in the U.S.. However, they are good for far more than travel.
Most longboarders enjoy the feeling that the board gives, a feeling similar to surfing. But some adventurous riders want more than a feeling. The sport of speedboarding appeals to these Thrill-seekers who are looking for an adrenalin (肾上腺素) rush. Speedboards are designed for riding down hills at high speeds while keeping balance. Since the sport can be dangerous, riders usually wear suits and helmets, in the event of a fall. Those who don’t have the need for speed put their longboards to other good uses. Riders can compete in slalom (障碍赛) racing or long-distance riding, both of which require accuracy and strength.
If you want something completely unique, there is even longboard dancing. This stylish set of moves is pertormed while rolling on a board.
For feeling, speed or style, give a longboard a try. You might just discover you enjoy the ride.

There are various ways to make your building more sustainable and energy efficient, but the most discussed area to improve is the roof. For years, we’ve heard about the benefits of white roofs. green roofs and roofs covered in solar panels, but depending on the building and its location, one of these types may make a bigger impact than another.
For building owners in hot, dry climates, turning your roof white is one of the cheapest things you can do to dramatically cut your energy use, but what about buildings in colder climates? Which choice produces the most benefit?
A study recently published in the Journal of Industrial Ecology details a full life cycle assessment Of each roof type for buildings located in Vancouver, Toronto and Calgary, Canada and comes up with a clear winner.
The study specifically modeled office buildings with a large roof of 1,340 square meters, assuming a 50-year life span(寿命)for the building, and declared solar roofs the definite winner with green roofs coming in second and white roofs last.
White roofs performed the poorest for cold climates because although they reduce cooling requirements in hot weather and also add to the life span of the building, they actually increased the heating requirements in colder climates during the longer cold weather stretches. Green roofs performed much better by both lowering cooling needs and heating needs, improving air quality and reducing storm water runoff, but in the end solar roofs had the greater impact.
The on-site electricity generation of solar roofs offsets the negative emissions(排放) from their production and transportation and the continued use over years ends up being a major positive by reducing the amount of coal-powered electricity that a building uses.
You can read more specifics about how the different roofs performed in the full 1ife cycle assessment
HERE.

Marc had worked in the city hall’s engineering department for so long that the city was laid out in his mind like a map, full of names and places. And then something happened that filled him with shock.
One August afternoon, he discovered a card saying GREEN BOTTLE STREET at the back of the drawer. He checked the listed details. It was not there. It was a lost, a forgotten street, which existed in the heart of Montreal, not half a mile from city hall, and no one had known. He put the card in his pocket and the next day he went looking for the street with beating heart.
At his first glance, Marc realized how it had gotten its unusual name. It was exactly like a bottle in shape. With the sun shining on the garden plots, and the blue sky overhead, the street gave him a sense of peace. A woman some sixty years of age was watering roses in the garden of the first house to his right.
He announced, “I’m from the city engineering department, madam.”
The woman recovered herself and set her watering can down.
“So you have found out at last,” she said. “We paid our taxes and made out a lot of forms and answered the questions of various officials. Then, after a while, we were sent no notices, so we paid no more taxes. No one bothered us at all. It was a long time before we understood that in some way they’d forgotten about us. ”
Marc nodded. Of course, if Green Bottle Street had been ignored by the city hall, no inspectors would go there, no tax collectors. All would pass merrily by.
“For several years, the tenants(租户) here had lived in harmony with each other and the landlord. The owner became so attached to them that he gave them all he had when he died. I have lived here for more than twenty years. I hope to end my days here as well. ”
She smiled pleasantly at him, apparently forgetting for the moment that he carried in his pocket a bomb that could blow their little world to pieces.
“You remind me of my nephew,” she said suddenly. “He was a dear boy. I was heartbroken when he died. I’m the last of my family, you know. ”
Marc thought of his noisy and violent landlady and neighbors. He could not recall when he had been spoken to with such simple goodwill. His heart warmed to this old lady. “I wonder,”he said slowly, “I am a good tenant, and I wonder…”
“Oh yes, ”she leaned forward eagerly, “you could have the top floor of my house. I’m sure it would suit you. ”
Marc took the card out of his pocket and tore it across and dropped the pieces in the watering can. As far as he was concerned. Green Bottle Street would remain mislaid forever.

People will spend a large amount of time to save a few dollars. There’s often a lightbulb moment that happens when you ask them to calculate their time-dollar value, because it reveals that they’re spending more in soft costs than they’re accounting for.
Take a second to think about it. If you spend 3 hours avoiding paying $12 for something, you’ve saved money, but you’ve also been working at $4 per hour. If you’re an entrepreneur(企业家), your time is worth more than $4 per hour, and while your choice has saved a “hard” cost, you’ve spent more in your time. Energy and attention are two other soft resources we need to be thinking about, too. Soft costs are just as real as hard costs. In that 3 hours, you could have been doing $300 worth of income-generating, high-value activities.
It’s a bit different when you’re employed by someone else, as you’ll make the same whether you spend 3 hours or 3 0 minutes to get something done. However, the people who actively add more value to their organization before being paid to do so are the ones most likely to get a promotion or advancement that honors their contributions because they show up in a different way.
The next time you’re thinking of making a decision that involves hard costs, also consider the soft opportunity costs of what you’re currently doing. No decision is made in a vacuum (真空).
Outside of “work” situations, think about how much time you spend doing things you’d rather not do, say, cleaning your house. Is it worth $100 to not have to spend your weekend cleaning your house? Why should you clean your house any more than you should spend time with your kids?
Keeping costs down is always a great thing to focus on. Just make sure that your focus on keeping costs down isn’t also keeping your income or earning potential down.
72. According to Paragraph 2, which of the following belongs to a “hard” cost?
A. Money.
B. Time.
C. Energy.
D. Attention.
73. The employee who is most likely to get promoted ________.
A. shows up early every day
B. works efficiently when paid
C. spends more time than needed
D. actively makes profit for the company
74. What’s the author’s attitude towards spending weekends cleaning the house in Paragraph 5?
A. Supportive.
B. Disapproving.
C. Sympathetic.
D. Uncertain.
75. How is the text organized?
A. Opinion—Argument —Explanation.
B. Opinion—Description—Conclusion.
C. Introduction—Analysis—Conclusion.
D. Introduction—Comparison—Exa mples.
